Great find on Martha's Vineyard! Right near the lighthouse. After viewing Gay Head Cliffs walked over to the Outermost Inn for cocktails on the lawn and a memorable family dinner. All the meals on the prix fixe menu were scrumptious and enjoyed by all. I had the scallops which were perfectly prepared with a spot on sear. The service was excellent and I enjoyed speaking with the owner who took such pride in the articles on display in the lobby. Definitely go if you are Up Island! read more

I stayed here with my fiancee once for a long weekend and it was memorable, the place is extremely romantic and quiet and the rooms are gorgeous with a lot of privacy. The restaurant is a bit pricey but worth every dollar and reservations need to be made a while in advance but absolutely a must when on the Vineyard. The owners had a sail boat that was named like my fiancee and it was a great way to get to know them better. Its one of the hidden gems of Martha's Vineyard. read more

Wow! What an INCREDIBLE place/experience! My now fiancé picked this spot to propose and it felt like a fairytale. Allison was one of the workers there and she was so helpful in making sure everything was perfect. Our room was a private room on the west wing where the sun set DIRECTLY in front of our room/ private deck. There were deer off in the distance playing... the horizon with the water peaking out, a view of the Gay Head Lighthouse. I mean really it was a fairytale. The food was amazing..we had dinner and breakfast and it was so fresh and they had amazing options. I got a halibut meal and that's now my favorite dish! Jeanne and Hugh are the owners and they made you feel like you were relatives... they mingled with all of the guests and everyone at the Inn knew I was getting proposed to and made me feel like a princess. I could not say more amazing things ...our experience was a dream.... the atmosphere, the views, the room, the hospitality, the food, the location... 5 stars don't do it justice !! read more

Just fantastic. I have been here for meals over the years as an island resident, but when a special someone treats you to a three night stay here, it is beyond glorious. We were in the Lighthouse Suite, which has its own entry and delightful seating areas, indoors and out. It is private, cozy and clean. Just perfect for quiet summer hours, languishing around with a long book, a glass of iced tea and not much else. It's not a fancy, deluxe place like you would find in Miami Beach, Manhattan or LA. It is a quaint, charming island inn. The staff could not be nicer and stayed out of our way unless we needed something, in which case they were so helpful. Beach towels? Sure! You will need a car as the island taxis are very expensive and the public transportation has limited runs out here. Bring your bikes, too, as this is a fabulous area to explore on your bike. We ate here on two nights and were just blown away by the food, which seems to get better as the years roll on. You need to make reservations months in advance. We were lucky that when we reserved the room, we were told this and made our dining decisions right then and there. Most of the food is local and we can recommend the lobster, the gnocchi, the scallops and the striped bass. It is not cheap, but please remember that you are on vacation and this place is pure heaven. This is the quietest part of the island in terms of shopping and entertainment so plan accordingly. It is very isolated. You can walk to the beach, watch the osprey soar overhead, bond with the lighthouse, reconnect with your darling....What more do you need, really? read more

We dined in your restaurant this past Thursday and would like to convey our deep dissatisfaction with our experience. When being seated, half of the room was squinting their eyes because of the poorly-shaded dining room. When we requested that the shades be lowered, the waitress conceded that they only go half-way down the windows (?). We spent half our meal dealing with the obnoxious glare. The service was fair, but nothing special. Our server, when asked what her favorites on the menu were, decided to explain every single item, pausing on certain ones to ask herself, "Have I tried this one? No, definitely haven't. Anyway..." I question your level of commitment to your staff when the menu is as condensed and extortionate as it is, and the staff has not even tasted over a third of the items. As a piece of advice, I'd recommend that your servers keep their negative opinions ("I'm not crazy about this entree") to themselves, as it truly detracts from the elegant feel of your restaurant, and sets the tone for a bad dinner. Our bread didn't arrive until after long after our appetizers, which were absurdly small. Your "clambake," purportedly containing "potatoes," came with one (seriously, one) pathetic dime-sized chunk of potato. This is not tapas, this is not a "tasting menu," or a sampler. It is a prix-fixe DINNER. Though the lobster was cooked well, the portion size was laughable- and came on a huge plate (You guys really think this is wise? The type of people who visit your restaurant see right through your tricks, trust me). The gazpacho was clumsily pureed, and the five of us were absolutely certain that it contained V8 juice, due to the unappetizing saltiness and artificial celery flavor. This is ridiculous when you're charging a whopping (non-negotiable!) $80 per person. Our server did not check back after this course hit, and when we got her attention to comment on the soup, she unsympathetically took it back to the kitchen and offered no other appetizer or compensation during the remainder or our meal. Deeply irritating. Our entrees were equally disappointing. Three of us had filets, two medium-rare and one medium. The medium came out hot but the medium-rares were actually lukewarm/cold. Again, our server did not check back with us, and everyone had finished their dinners before we got our warmed entrees back. The filets, which were supposed to come with "haricots verts," came with (count 'em!) FIVE. beans. each. What? You're even cutting corners when it comes to vegetable portions? I have to shake my head. You should alert the tables to your portion sizes when taking reservations, as we all left hungry. Dessert was the worst course. The brownie was so so disgusting. It was too sweet, cold (?!?!?), small, and came with already-melted coconut ice-cream, also too sweet. Why do you serve the hazelnuts in honey on the side? What does this add to the dish besides more sweetness? Oh, it takes up the third section on the HUGE plate for the SMALL dishes. These problems are the tip of the iceberg. You need to get a better wine list. Your selections were uninspired, unvaried, and scant, especially for a restaurant of your price-range. Your cocktail selection is negligible and frankly bizarre (mimosas at dinner, really?). However, what disappointed us to the core was your lack of hospitality and general tactfulness. When your guests clearly have multiple bad experiences (steak too cold, soup sent back, etc.), it is a common courtesy to have a manager or maître d' approach the table, even if it is just to offer a simple apology. Instead, we were subject to our insincere and unprofessional waitress's apathy. As you must know, word of mouth is crucial on this island, and as someone who has visited the Vineyard several times a year over the past two decades, I can assure you that my family, friends and colleagues will not be visiting your restaurant until you demonstrate that you have addressed these fundamental problems. My boyfriend and I came here in August for a very special meal. At the time I didn't know that he would be proposing that evening. He had called ahead of time to let everyone know he would be proposing on site. We got there and began to enjoy the beautiful view. Our waitress was sweet. The food was delicious. Dinner with drinks came out to about $300. After dinner we walked on site to watch the sunset. My boyfriend proposed right at sunset. It was amazing. After the proposal we came back in and the hostess who's also a co-owner congratulated us. I gave this place 2 stars because out of any single place anywhere in the world. My fiancé chose this place to propose to me. He had heard wonderful things about this place and decided it would be the perfect place. And they couldn't even offer us a glass of Champagne Where's the hospitality? It completely turned us off. We weren't expecting anything at all. But it's a kind gesture. A classy gesture to offer a couple who got engaged at your establishment a glass of Champagne or something. Especially after spending over $300 at dinner. After that happened it made me feel that this place had no class. We were obviously over the moon about the engagement but it was kind of rude not to offer a just engaged couple a glass of Champagne after the proposal happened on their property. The good: The setting is spectacular. The dinning room is pretty with wonderful view. The food is above average but pricey. The lobster tasted great but the portion was extremely small. The halibut was a little dry . The egg and truffle appetizer was spectacular. Our waitress was friendly and conversational in just the right way. The bad: We booked the restaurant for a special occasion. We started with drinks in the beautiful bar area. We ran into two friends and were enjoying their company. The restaurant got annoyed at us since we were spending too much time at the bar and asked us to sit at our table. That was ok but they could have been a little more graceful in the ask. After dinner, our family went to play the ring toss game at the bar. The bartender literally ripped the ring out of my hand and said we could not play because it disturbed the guests upstairs. The experience was awful. The food came out cold and I had to send it back. Then when it finally arrived warm it tasted like I was eating warmed cream as opposed to a corn chowder. They had ran out of pork so it came without, and the dish felt as though it lacked. The next course was lobster, only containing a small overlooked claw. After placing it in front of me their was some sort of separating oily broken cream sauce poured. I expect more attention to detail from a fine dinning place. Especially paying the price that is 85$ is insane to ask for such things. I felt the need to go back and talk to the chef myself who seemed in a panic and a bit rude and short. The best restaurant on the Vineyard isn't in one of major towns, it's right here up island. I've been going to the Vineyard since I was a kid and have eaten here a number of times, and all I can say is *somehow* it continues to get better and better each time. I'm in the hospitality industry, and everyone from their hostess to bartenders to waitstaff and chefs have nailed absolutely perfect service down to the smallest detail on par with a five star resort, but without the slightest hint of pretension... And that doesn't even touch the amazingly fantastic food and drink they have on offer. I couldn't be happier for the Taylors, they really know how it's done. I have so much confidence in this amazing establishment that took my fiancée here after I proposed, and we've come back and will continue to come back on the date every year. If you're just in the area and cannot secure a reservation, it's definitely worth getting a cocktail or glass of wine here too. If you don't stop by you're missing out. read more

Went here for a final meal of our week in the Vineyard. If you can cook, skip this place. Otherwise, you may feel extremely silly for dropping so much money on strangely executed, immemorable food. The grilled oysters were pleasing. Sadly, the entrees weren't terrific. The squid ink pasta had what seemed like a tablespoon of paprika. It was indefinable as a dish. It had a very unsubtle, unsatisfying finish. The duck, while cooked well, sat on a mushy mound of polenta and blue cheese. All you could taste was blue cheese. First, if you are new to the Island as we are, this place is somewhat challenging to find. Trust your GPS. There is no exterior signage, just a large white anchor, to inform us that the large house on the hill is the place called the Outermost Inn. Even with our challenges finding the location, we did arrive a few minutes early and were invited to wait on the outside deck. The bar tender was very pleasant and she made a great white sangria that my wife really enjoyed. The bar top was made of one huge piece of stone that was beautiful and interesting. We sat on some Adirondack chairs on the lawn just past the deck and watched the remains of the sunset. Very pleasant. When our table was ready the hostess came and found us and showed us to our table. The menu is Prix Fixe for $80.00 and you have to have a reservation. We were NOT impressed with the food. For the price I expected to be totally wowed. I was not. The portions were "artfully" small on huge plates which made the size comically diminutive. And the preparation was only so-so. It was tasty and we ate everything. However, partly because for $80.00 we wanted to get our money's worth. I had the filet which was cooked per my request. Even though it was small, it was a decent cut of meat. The sauce which was advertised as a cognac cream sauce was a bordelaise sauce instead and although flavorful it was minimal. The potato wedge which was advertised as "rosti potatoes " was really just a triangular shaped cut of over cooked hash browns. The "skinny beans" were nicely cooked Haricot Verts in a portion small enough to number the individual pieces with ease. More like a garnish than a menu item. My wife had the roasted beet ravioli, Great Hill Blue cheese emulsion, Island greens, beet vinaigrette. She said it was fine but nothing to write home about. Our server was inattentive and not charming at all. If I am going to spend more than $200 in a restaurant I want service that makes me feel like it is worth it. I found my server to be phony and she tried so hard to "put on airs" in her speech and mannerisms it was fake and insincere. I had the feeling that she knew what her tips would likely be and didn't really care. She should go work in a cafeteria behind a counter. The dining room was very warm, almost uncomfortably humid. Really 4 1/2 stars. Went for dinner tonight. Let's say everything was 99.8% perfect. Nitpick. 2% would be room slightly noisy & waitress didn't quite fill water fast enough. Food was amazing. Reasonable portions prepared to perfection. Your palate danced with joy. The timing between the three courses was perfect with unique palate cleansers between. Fixed price $88 per was reasonable for amazing quality & setting. Only diners I could see unhappy would be those who need huge portions or use tons of salt. Had a great evening at the Outermost Inn our waitress was wonderful (Marisa) and the kitchen was excellent in tailoring a dining experience for me that was dairy free. The restaurant is expensive but the entire experience to me was worth it. The food was amazing with a wonderful view. Truly picturesque with wild flowers, swallows, morning doves and deer. When I peeked into the kitchen I was graciously invited to step in for a moment and see the kitchen. The meal was spotted with unexpected bites: a ceviche, a lobster bisque (I got a delicious poached turnip with a cumin and carrot purée) and lemonade/vanilla bean and tyme palate cleanser shooter, fresh baked bread, a homemade mint and a little bag of homemade granola to take home. On top the meal of perfectly cooked sea scallops, halibut with beets and a salsa verde (the salsa was fantastic- brought the whole meal together in a way I wasn't expecting) and a dessert that was made dairy free a coconut sorbet with a pineapple and mango reduction. I love places where you go in get a knock out meal all while feeling welcome and cared for if you want something that is classy but not stuffy and uptight go to the Outermost Inn. read more

Absolutely incredible. Went to a lot of different places on island, but this was hands down, the best food we ate during our trip. It was not only the food that made the experience memorable, though - the entire ambiance was eclectic and vibrant. The people were super friendly. We ended up hanging out with an older couple all night long and saw them the next morning and exchanged information. It was more than just a meal - it was an experience. There were also some celebrities present, which is always cool. The owner, Hugh, taught us how to play the horseshoe on a string game, as we watched one of the most gorgeous sunsets I have ever seen. This was an absolutely incredible evening. From the cab ride up island to the greeting we received walking in the door. It is like walking into your best friends house for dinner. We were greeted and seated with smiles. Our server Silvana was all smiles and knowledgeable about the menu and the history. The tasting menu offered something for every palate at the table. Alex, our sommelier, was not only beautiful, but built the wine list herself and is also one of the owners. Watching the staff buzz around the small dining rooms was like watching a well oiled machine. I got the lobster risotto which was a great portion and chucks of lobster. The two other delicious appetizers were the beef cheeks and the grilled oyster. Alex recommended a few great bottles of wine and knew everything about them. She even brought over a bottle that was opened by mistake and offered everyone a taste. The entrees were just as impressive as the appetizer course. I had the pork Wellington, great choice, as was the halibut that some other people chose. The dessert choices were all incredible and Alex paired my cheese platter with a tawny port. After dinner Alex invited us to see the kitchen and it was just the perfect end to a great evening. Well worth the trip up island. My husband and I had dinner here last week. We made an early reservation (6:30) so we could see the sunset. I wish we had arrived early because they have a great bar on the porch with a really nice view. It isn't right on the water, but has remote water views and a nice hilly view. The ambiance here is spectacular. Hugh Taylor even serenaded one of the guests for her birthday (I think it was a friend) and he looked and sounded like his more famous brothers, which was pretty darn cool. We were seated in the corner and felt a little "out of it" because no one else was seated near us. We asked for another table, more in the middle of the waiter paths (fine for us) and were promptly moved. I agree with another reviewer that the portions are small. But since it is prix fixe and there are three courses it was plenty for me and my husband. But we aren't huge people and we ate every last bight. This is a complicated restaurant to review. Among other things, note that there are not a lot of recent Yelp reviews. Maybe it's not a social savvy crowd who eats here. A lot of people speak of the Outermost Inn with hushed reverence, including the owners. (The web site says that many people reserve a table six months in advance.) It's a great location with beautiful up-island views. From our table we could see the sound and the setting sun, not to mention two deer munching fresh greens in the meadow. The owners also create a special occasion feel from the moment you enter. We were shown out to the bar / lawn to enjoy the views and a glass of wine. A charming hostess came to take us to our window table. The service was friendly and efficient, if anything just a little too fast making me wonder if we were being churned. Here's the thing: our fellow diners seemed genuinely delighted with the experience. Lots of family pictures on the lawn. People in great spirits and marveling at the sunset. No complaints at the tables. Maybe an early clue should have been that we had no trouble making a Friday night reservation in July ("what time would you like?") in contrast, it's extremely hard to get a reservation at State Road in West Tisbury any night of the week. And now for the food. It's an $85 prix fixe menu. Ok, it's an island. There are costs and a limited season to make your money. But you hope it would be really good. You could after all buy three plates of Jimmy Seas vongole marinara and die happy. Our meal started with an amuse-bouche from the chef, a little tuna tartar with a touch of creme fraiche, I think. Fresh but flavorless. Then a lobster bisque shooter. This is when I knew something was terribly wrong. A strong taste of raw flour dominated. Either the bus boys were cooking, or the chef was living on island time. The sashimi appetizer was fresh but merely dressed with a little sea salt. By this time, I was craving some imagination from the kitchen, a little ingenuity. I mean the place had all the trappings and attitude of a serious restaurant. The main course was lobster with gnocchi, puréed corn, and some beans. It was cooked fine but flavorless. I would have done just as well picking out two pieces of lobster meat from the fish counter at Larsen's. As for portion size, they served one claw and a small tail from a one-and-a-quarter pound lobster, at best. Oh well. For desert, I had the lemon sorbet with tropical fruit. A dollop of respectable sorbet was served on top of crushed macadamia nuts surrounded by some limp pineapple and kiwi. Clearly the fruit was prepped much earlier in the day. For wine we had a Sancerre. Without going into it, the list was limited and middle of the road. My herbal tea, included in the price, was dwarfed by a giant sugar bowl. The big question for me was whether the chef and owners are in on the joke, or are as oblivious as most of the apparently happy diners. read more

We visited Gay Head in mid-November and came across a sign advising Lunch was available at the 'OMI'. What an experience! From the time we walked in the door and were greeted by the owner to the end of our visit, the attention was outstanding. I seldom order a Vegan dish but the Roasted Turnip Cassoulet was delicious. My wife ordered the Croque Madam - it was better than she expected. Chef Nate Wade does an incredible job. The plates he prepares were delicious and appealing. Our daughter is a Chef in NYC who works for the Food Network so we know good food and the lunch served at OMI ranked up there with the best. read more

The coolest thing was having drinks on the deck beforehand overlooking a big field which a few deer came and grazed. The food above average but don't expect sizable portions. So far, I am unimpressed with the Outermost Inn. Apparently they are doing renovations and are closed to overnight guests for at least the 2019 season. This would have been good to know when purchasing a gift certificate. We spend a very nice three nights at the B and B while attending a wedding on the island. The place is very nice and the location, while remote, is beautiful. The breakfasts were large and excellent. The only problem was that the toilet in our room did not flush properly (ugh). Luckily there were two others downstairs which worked well. One word of caution, the stairs to the second floor are steep and dangerous, so if you have any movement disability avoid this place as there are no accessible rooms. Pretentious, inferior food, surly service Even by Martha's Vineyard summer standards of jacked-up prices and overrated food, the Outermost Inn stands out as memorably bad. It delivers neither the cooking nor the service you would expect from a restaurant at this level ($88 prix fixe). We were a party of six on a weeknight. The striped bass special -- talked up energetically by our waiter -- turned out to be a jumble of clashing flavors, none very good, delivered to the table lukewarm. The poached swordfish demonstrated that even a nice piece of fresh swordfish, so delicious when simply prepared on a grill, is possible to ruin. Perhaps the chef was off and they'd let the busboy do the cooking for the night. The sunset view from dining room and deck is indeed beautiful, but on all counts -- food, expense, AND ocean vista -- you will do better at the nearby Seafood Shack. read more

Okay, one of my new favorite dining experiences ever! This place is absolutely amazing. It's an amazing New England home on the top of a hill on Martha's Vineyard. When we walked in the door we were enthusiastically greeted by the owner and his wife, like we were family members they had in from out of town! The entrance area is like a big cozy living room, with a beautiful porch and patio overlooking the grassy hill and a view of the ocean in the distance. The owner, Hugh Taylor, hung out with the guests as we enjoyed the fresh fall air, sharing stories about the home he built and still lives in. I have never felt so welcomed and comfortable in a fine dining restaurant in all my life. Dinner was amazing and the service was great. We had a large group of 8 people and everything was flawless. The menu is a fixed price for your choice of an appetizer, entree and dessert. The menu changes often so my recommendations probably won't matter much, but the scallops appetizer, beef tenderloin entree and apple & pear crisp dessert were all incredible. Never stayed there, but the food is delicious! If you arrive early your party can enjoy drinks on the deck watching the sun set over the mountains, a view that is really spectacular. The wait staff was friendly and accommodating. I will mention that the menu had a $85 price fix, but I enjoy all 3 courses of my meal.
