My bathtub is old and it had started peeling and looking pretty gross. I found John on Yelp and called him, and he asked me to send pictures of my tub. I sent the pics, he gave me an estimate, I agreed, and he scheduled me for a few days later. He showed up on time and explained to me the condition of the tub and what he'll be doing thoroughly. It turned out the inside of my tub actually wasn't as bad as we had expected - he was honest about it and lowered the price from the original estimate. He brought blankets so the carpet around the bathroom entrance doesn't get ruined, which was really nice. When he was done, bathtub looked BRAND NEW! John is one of the most professional contractor I've ever dealt with. He just completed the refinishing of two old, beat up tubs and a cultured marble countertop that had yellowed (pictures attached). Here's the facts; 1. Always on time, extremely professional 2. Much better pricing than all other competitors (by far!!) 3. John will stay and finish the work until you kick him out of your house. Seriously. My job took three days total. He arrived at dawn, left at dusk. 4. When the trim kit I purchased did not work for my shower, he went to Home Depot and grabbed a few new (similar) options so we would still finish on time. 5. John has impeccable attention to detail. I'm having him work on my kitchen remodel when I get to it. 6. I first contacted John on Dec. 26th to see if he would be able to refinish our bathtub. I sent pictures as requested and he replied back that he could do it. I asked if it could be completed by 1/7 since that is when I return to work. He said absolutely and he would send me a written quote. I never received a quote from him. I contacted him again on Dec. 30th letting him know I never received a quote. he said "oops I've been really busy I will get it out to you today." Well now it is 1/5 and I still have not heard back from him, I return to work on Monday and my bathtub has not been repaired. I really wish he would have been honest when I contacted him on 12/26 and told me he does not have time to help me. I would have contacted another company that same day and moved on. I just had to write this review. John is as honest as they come. I called and explained that my fiberglass tub has some rough patches on the bottom where the water doesn't drain correctly. Over time, the water evaporates and we get a hard mineral build up. Then the cleaning ladies come and scrub the heck out of it. End result: Hard patch. John basically explained exactly how I can fix this myself. He didn't try for a sale, he took his time and recommended sandpaper and polisher materials and told me where I could get them. Made sure to put down tarps and asked for permission to leave the equipment overnight. My shower stall was probably one of their worst nightmares because they were had to take off someone else's poor job from years ago. The ONLY positive thing I have to say about this company is that the tub they refinished does look good, however... Expect not only for your job to take longer than quoted (my tub refinishing was suppose to take 2 weeks...it took over 4 weeks), but if you call him to check on progress expect to receive every excuse in the book why it's not done. John came out to my vacation house in Huntington Beach and I wish I could have this great of experience with every contractor I've hired. To have to read the lonely one star review from a guy out of the area who spouted lie after lie and placing blame on John was ridiculous. This incident was occurring when I was getting my bid from John, and it was JOHN that had to call the police on this guy, not the other way around!!! It's so sad for someone to work so hard and have a customer give them a false name and try to hide from them. That review should definitely fall into the hidden reviews that Yelp will sometimes do. What an amazing experience with this company. I found over the top on angie's list. He literally refinished a 1938 tub and made it look amazing! Then three months later I had a plumber install a new drain and snake the top. The plumber chipped and left marks all over the tub. I called over-the-top to explain what had happened he said I'll be right over. He came fixed my tub within an hour and a half to perfect condition. He didn't charge me and said thanks for using me! What a great find! This is the second time I used this company. We have rentals and the tenants are not careful with our Kohler bath tubs and sinks. Over the Top Refinishing did such an amazing job repairing and airbrushing the chips at such a reasonable price, that we no longer have to worry about having to replace bathtubs and sinks, which we did in the past after the chips rusted. John did a great job installing a new sink and faucet for me. I had originally called him to re-coat my enamel sink, but he recommended replacing it and knew where I could get one cheap. There were some tiles that needed to be removed and he was able to remove a minimum, without damaging others. Others I had talked to said this couldn't be done. He also came up with a creative way of finishing off the perimeter of the sink, since the needed replacement tiles were discontinued and it looks very good. I hired John because he made the best recommendation and came across as having a lot of experience. His fee was on the low end from other contractors I had talked with. Over the Top did okay on the bathtub refinishing although they made a total mess of my walls and it needs to be redone now that it's 5 years post. But...they then overcharged me (about double) to put in some granite and they broke the granite but hid the break with putty or something so I didn't see it for a couple of months. Liar-cheater. Bad business! read more
