For lunch it seemed expensive while not being good. We didn't finish our sandwiches. The staff did not give our food then acted like it was our fault that we didn't know their system, when she knew it was our first time there. Delicious Southern meal in a historic building that's brimming with sunshine. I had a spectacular shrimp salad, my mother enjoyed a double grilled cheese, hubs had a great burger. Shockingly, the thing we liked the least was the mac and cheese that came as a side with my son's kid's meal. The history of the location is fun, and their craft cocktails were yummy. We have been to Over Yonder 4 times in the past few years and I couldn't wait to return when we were in the area. The first time we had the crispy okra appetizer it was excellent. The last two times it was soaked in oil. Why order again? I gave them the benefit of the doubt but the last time it was not only soaked in oil but it was tough and chewy and not crispy. We sent it back and it was taken off our bill. I was looking for a vegetarian option so I ordered the Red bean and rice burger. Nothing in the description states it is spicy. It was so hot with spice (red pepper flake?) that my eyes watered. I had the salad as a side. It does state lots of garlic and lots of lemon. YES, LOTS of garlic. Too much raw garlic. I could only eat half but it was a generous helping for a side. My husband had the daily special burger with venison and he loved it. I am not sure I will return any time soon. read more

Absolute jem of a restaurant in beautiful Valle Crucis! Had an amazing dinner there this evening. It's off the beaten path but well worth it. Great food with imagination and the desserts, well....we're stuffed! Our server was excellent and extremely attentive. The restaurant has a history that doesn't forget to highlight where it's been. This was our 3rd visit for our girls yearly weekend getaway and all 7 of us looked forward to dinner. Things took a dive with our service and food. Bread we ordered for before dinner arrived halfway through the meal, second wine order had to be canceled-came out too late to enjoy with meal, but the worst "flaw" was my tomato cobbler. From all accounts and pictures, it looked delicious. My serving arrived very burnt, almost black on top. I mentioned this to our server immediately and his comment was "it always comes like this." Wait...burnt??? No offer to take it back. My fault to not insist because everyone else had their food, so I removed the crust and what was supposed to be cheesy goodness and ate it. Very disappointing and blah. Also some side dishes others had were not hot. On the plus side, my Gin Buck cocktail was wonderful. Not sure if we'll give it a 4th chance next year. read more

Took my mom here for her birthday lunch and it was nothing short of amazing. Everything was pretty much spot on from the cool ambience, delicious food and great server. Visiting in the area from out of town with a friend and Over Yonder was recommended by a local. One of the best restaurant experiences ever! We shared an appetizer of fried okra with remoulade sauce. Not your typical fried okra. No breading, just cut length wise and deep fried. Amazing! For our entrees, we both had the hanger steak with mashed potatoes and brocillini. Everything was cooked to perfection. Then for a splurge we shared a generous slice of chocolate custard pie with vanilla ice cream. A beautiful, sweet ending. And what made our meal truly memorable was our lovely server, Ellen. She made us feel at home with great recommendations. By the time we left, we felt like we made a new friend. Such a wonderful dinner. The farm house is beautiful and the ambience romantic but casual. Prices are very reasonable for upscale food, and the portions are perfect. The trout was great, and the sweet potato casserole on the side was perfect if you like something a little sweet with your meal. The meatloaf is a must if you are a meatloaf kind of person. It goes very nicely with the grits. Peach cobbler - wonderful and a large portion that's easily sharable...unless you are 8 months pregnant like I am, in which case you should just go ahead and get your own. While showing my aunt and mom Western NC one of the places I knew they'd like to see was the Mast General Store in Valle Crucis...but even I was surprised by the restaurant across the street. How had I missed this before? Situated in an old mansion The Mast Farm Inn is a B&B in a Norman Rockwell style picturesque setting a few minutes outside of Boone NC. The house itself was once the first and only house in the area with running water and electricity...but less I digress, lets talk food! EVERYTHING about my meal was top notch. Don't expect white table cloth dining, but do expect white table cloth service and food. Although the basis of the menu is traditional and comfort...the techniques, flavors and finished products are semi-fusion and totally satisfying. Grilled Pork and Beef Meatloaf served on a bed of creamy cheese grits and home style butter beans...MMMMMM! Tomato cobbler made with garden hot house tomatoes and sweet onions served piping hot in a cruet with a beautiful and tasty romano cheddar cheese biscuit crust! How about an okra halve appetizer, small okra flash fired to perfection, lightly sprinkled with lemon and served with a smoked remoulade dipping sauce. Don't fill up on Ice Cream or Taffy at the Mast General store, save it for a short walk across the street to The Mast Farm Inns "Over Yonder" Restaurant...I promise, you'll be happy you did and your friends will love you for it. read more

Just my kind of place. I can't imagine anyone stumbling upon this place by accident. It isn't near anything. An-y-thing. You either have to come across it on a search engine or be fortunate enough to have someone recommend it. We, happily, fell into the latter category when the proprietor of the B&B at which we were lodged told us it was a must-try. He was right. The young ladies who seated & waited on us couldn't have been friendlier. Good omen. We can tolerate middling food if the service is good. This night we wouldn't need to. My wife ordered the night's special, a ribeye in a light Gorgonzola tomato cream sauce. She's not normally a fan of bleu cheese, but loved it. Said the sauce didn't overpower the tender, well-marbled steak. I started with roasted okra. Yes, roasted. Not fried. They get it really crispy with just salt & garlic--no breading. It may be heresy in these parts, but I might like that better than fried okra. My main dish was more okra. I'm a huge fan of grits, & love any variety of gumbo. Never had them together before. Their gumbo is a deep, rich green, with plenty of okra & filé. Earthy. Woodsy. Great combination. I have no idea how this place can get enough traffic to stay in business given their remote locale, but if they're here next time we're in Boone, we'll definitely be stopping in! read more

Our day started with a text confirming our 5:00 reservation and at that time we were told they needed the table by 6:30. Tacky but my son had been to Over Yonder previously so we understood that the restaurant was in an old house with limited seating. We arrived promptly and were seated at 5 in a dark room in the rear of the house. Additionally, as we were seated we were AGAIN told they would need the table back by 6:30. The 2nd reminder was again tacky and unnecessary. At that point, we decided to not order an appetizer or dessert, they didn't deserve our additional business. 3 at our table ordered the Chicken Fried Chicken and I ordered the trout. the food was good. Not extraordinary and certainly not a meal we would spend hours savoring. We had to request a soda refill (which are served in small half pint jars) although the server was fairly prompt at refilling waters. My son in law and daughter were on a check and my son and myself on another. I wanted to leave the tip so we left both signed receipts on one clipboard with the tip on top. We were a mile down the road and we received a call asking if we'd taken the restaurant copy of a receipt. Apparently they failed to even look before making that ridiculous call. Overall the food was good somewhat basic country fare at a high price. As we were leaving at 5:45 we noticed the restaurant was empty except for a single couple sat at a tiny 2 seat table. The front porch was pretty full and I believe is first come first serve and no reservations. Prehaps locals and regulars know to sit on the porch to avoid the rude time reminders. The view from the porch is nice but not amazing or unique to the area. We enjoyed the food but the rude multiple reminders killed any ambience the establishment may of had. read more

My wife and I met a another couple and their eight year old here for an early dinner. I very much enjoyed the over all atmosphere of the place. It had a modern country vibe with great cocktails (that often used moonshine). I have a rule about a fancy restaurant that I may go back to. I always order the hamburger on the first visit. It is really a test. It is fairly hard to mess up a burger. It is harder to make an incredible burger. If they mess a simple burger I never go back. It is usually a great success. I have had a ton of juicy, delicious burgers (for half the price of my wife's meal mind you). She orders the steak or fish for $28 and I order what should be an incredible burger for $11. It is usually a win win. Well this time I would have to say it was loose loose. My burger was well well well done. I ordered it medium to rare, "more on the rare side then the medium rare please." I will also try one o your fancy cocktails for $9! The burger was tasty but far over cooked for anyone even if you like your burger in hockey puck form. Next up was the dessert. They had five things on the menu. One, peach cobbler, two ice cream, three affogato, four a chocolate chess pie and five banana pudding. Wouldn't you know it they were out of three desserts. It could have been their saving grace a nice yummy chess pie or espresso over ice cream. No matter I will have a cappuccino....nope the cappuccino machine was broken. Everyone was very friendly, and the waitstaff was very attentive. My group had the roasted okra (the smoked remoulade for dipping was an amazingly flavorful pairing), skillet chicken-fried chicken, pan-fried trout (the smoked onion tartar sauce was another unique and very flavorful item), and the "Over Yonder Burger." We ordered several appetizers and sides instead of a big meal but we were not disappointed. The bowl of fresh homemade chips is huge and a can't miss if you like that sort of thing. We visited Over Yonder for the first time last Saturday evening. Our reservation went flawlessly, with the establishment reaching out early in the day to confirm. We waited in a brief line upon arriving a few minutes early for our seating time, but then were seated promptly. We had an uncomfortable wait for water, drink orders etc- but nothing too horrible (10-15 minutes). Then it took another 10-15 for the drinks (not so good). And then at least 30-45 for our entrees to arrive. Not good. And unfortunately, the worst part is that our food was not even hot! Lukewarm at best. My spouse's grits were somewhat "congealed", taking on the shape, retracting from the edge of the dish they were served in. The trout tasted great, but was only barely warm! The shrimp and grits were only so-so. Barely warm and there is not much that tastes good barely warm! Mother's mushroom stronganoff was the same- barely warm and tasted somewhat like a "hamburger helper" kit. We were really excited about finding a new gem, easier to get into given the current hospitality challenges...however we were sadly disappointed. For the credit- the okra appetizer was definitely on point and the star of the evening, but was not able to redeem the entire evening on itself alone. read more
