Amazing. This has to be one of the best secrets anywhere in the area. The cost of the food is hard to believe compared to the quality of the meal. I could see myself paying three times the amount at other comparable places for the quality found here. The wait staff was astoundingly friendly and the building itself has a charm that is just wonderful. The trout tasted wonderful, and the desserts are some of the best i have tasted anywhere in the nation. I was also happy with how well kept and clean it was as well as many places i have been too that "looked nice" were no where near as well kept. I would consider it one the best places in the area to visit not only for the amazing food but for its marvelous location and charm as well. read more

What a great find! Was disappointed that the Daniel Boone was limited on their menu and saw a sign to go to Over Yonder. The atmosphere and decor is awesome and a quaint little southern style house. The server Rachel was very friendly, helpful, and attentive. started with the pimento cheese and green tomato salsa appetizer that was a nice twist. All the beverages, non-alcoholic and alcoholic were fantastic, well thought out, and what you hope to expect for a place like this. Must try the different moonshine cocktails and the coffee drinks. Family of three had the Fried Chicken entree and the Pork/Beef Meatloaf. All were delicious and came accompanied with sides that were also well thought out in a southern tradition. Make sure and leave room for desserts!! Not too over priced. You should mark this down as a must go to restaurant for your next visit to the Boone area. read more

I really liked the food at this restaurant it seemed everything on the menu was very home cooked southern style food. But they were out of my first two options. It seems this happens quite frequently. There is a beautiful porch to sit at outside. Inside seating is tight. Our service was nice but a little odd he spoke as if he were in renaissance times. I went to Over Yonder last night for the first time. I live and work in Boone and have been wanting to try Over Yonder since it opened. My boyfriend and I were so impressed with their menu, we couldn't figure out what we wanted to try first. We got the pimento cheese appetizer and it was the tastiest pimento cheese this southern gal has ever had. I got the NC Rainbow trout with butter beans and cheese grits. It was all exquisite. It was like a nostalgic trip to grandmas house, eating all of my southern comfort food favorites, only 10x better. (Sorry, grandma.) I am very perplexed by the reviews of Over Yonder. Perhaps we caught them on an off night. We had been to this location in the past and think this is a different chef/owner than years past. Can't say it's an improvement if that is the case. We had a 7pm reservation and were spot on time. We ordered drinks and appetizer - the Pimento Cheese, which was good - and then sort of slowly realized our entrees were missing in action. The waitress at about the same time came up and apologized that she simply forgot to put our order in! She told us it wouldn't be long, less than 15 minutes, etc. We were cool, not in a big hurry but we did ask for some some type of discount which they eventually offered and it was fair so all good. The manager never came over to apologize which was very bad form, he really should have said something but he let the waitress dangle on the rope. Our waitress was very apologetic which was appreciated. After 20+ minutes the food did finally arrive. I would give it a "meh" at best. I had shrimp and grits which I assumed would be great since the chef is from Baton Rouge, but the shrimp were small and tasteless, the grits on the lumpy side, not smooth and creamy. There was an odd, almost sour gravy doused on the whole mess. I ate it out of hunger, not desire. My wife had trout which was lightly breaded but dry and a bit over cooked with a sweet potato casserole that was cold. My son had the hangar steak and it was tasty overall but cooked very rare (cold red center) not medium rare (warm pink center) as requested. Had we not already waited so long we would likely have sent the steak back for a bit more grill time, so he lived with "hangar steak tartare." My oldest daughter had the fried chicken breast which she said was good, and my other daughter a squash pot pie which she liked. This is the mountains and we had driven 30 minutes there and candidly can think of three or four places we passed that would have made us happier, including Cook Out and Wendy's. Between the shaky service and so-so food we won't be going back but wish them the best of luck and hope for their sake this was not the norm. read more

We had an excellent meal at Over Yonder last night. I had the special, Heritage Ham, it was delicious. Two of us had the Trout and both loved it. The last member of our party had the meatloaf and commented that it was fantastic. All of the sides we had we delicious, especially the butter beans. I would've given 5-stars, but felt the menu was limited - which is not always a bad thing. The service was good and the atmosphere was cozy. We have plans to go back. read more

My family and I visited the high country for the first time last week and fell in love with Valle Crucis and surrounding areas. We passed Over Yonder on the way to the house we rented and decided to see what it was all about. We were a party of 7, 5 adults and 2 children. First of all, the employee who took our reservation was absolutely polite and accomadating. I called back to change the time and got a different employee who was also very friendly and polite. The atmosphere on the outside was as neat as on the inside! Very nice ambiance. Kids enjoyed it too. We loved that they grew their own produce. I wish we could have tried every entrée on the menu! We all had a variety of entrees including the tomato cobbler, shrimp and grits, trout, and the 10oz ribeye special (which seemed bigger than 10oz!). My Dad had the steak and ordered it rare and was not disappointed! It also came with zuchinni spaghetti that was to die for! Even my Dad thought it was delicious and he usually does not like zuchinni. My son who is 3 wanted a side of mac and cheese and applesauce . Both were fantastic. My daughter who is almost 10 had the sloppy joe which we all tasted and thought was much better than any sloppy joe we had tasted previously. There will be no more making sloppy joe's with the canned sauce at our house. Everything tasted fresh and homemade. For desert, we tried the peach cobbler wich was amazing! My husband and I had the vanilla ice cream with the espresso elixir. Perfect for coffee lovers! The kids just wanted chocolate ice cream with a little chocolate drizzle and that is what they got. We ordered off the cocktail menu as well. Our sever was great and answered any question we had with a smile and did not rush us at all. We all thought it was priced reasonably. The portions were just right to a little bigger than necessary. The portions were not so that you were hungry after but you were not stuffed if you ate most or all. Some in our group did not finish their entrees. I don't think you can judge the value of a restaurant by how much food you have leftover. The ambiance, plus locally grown food, great service was well worth the price paid! We liked it so much, we talked about planning an over night trip and staying at the local Inn so we could have dinner at Over Yonder again :) read more

A return visit to Over Yonder did not disappoint. It was as good as I remember. We stopped in for a late lunch, early dinner (dunch). Our waitress, Paxton, was very friendly, knowledge, and attentive. She informed us that the lunch specials were only available for 15 more minutes since they move to a dinner menu at 4. The crispy fried okra was delicious & a must try, although the remoulade was a little bland. The pimento cheese spread was delicious but the fry bread with it was just okay. Not the Native American fry bread I expected. My husband opted for the black bean lamb soup of the day. He said it was delicious. I had the Emaline salad as I was trying to eat light. The greens were the freshest I have ever had in a restaurant. The onion was shaved & the fresh apple julienned, along with goat cheese, golden raisens & very smoky almonds with sherry vinegrette on the side. The salad was so large that I took half home. The "special" tea made with ginger and mint was a good choice. The restaurant was decorated nicely for fall with beautiful pumpkins & guords on the mantle. The chef's wife's beautiful pottery adorns the walls & is for sale. This restaurant is a must try. Food is always fresh! Closed on Tuesdays. Highly recommend. read more

A friend and I discovered this little place while visiting the Mast General Store earlier that day. I looked at all the reviews and they were wonderful. Our expectations were set very high. The house is so quaint and nicely decorated, but the staff was very nude. I ordered the mint ginger tea which was very light and refreshing. We ordered the pimento cheese appetizer which was delicious!! I could've eaten it for my meal. For the main course, I ordered the chicken fried chicken with cheesy grits and Mac and cheese. The grits were pretty bland and ended up adding a lot of salt and pepper to them. The Mac and cheese was orange in color; I've never seen "homemade" mac and cheese that bright of orange. My friend agrees with me that it looked like Kraft boxed mac and cheese with different noodles. The chicken fried chicken was delicious but my favorite part about the main course was the gravy for the chicken!! My friend got the meatloaf and loved it. The BBQ sauce was awesome too. We boxed up half of our meal so we could get the dessert of banana pudding to share. Kinda of disappointing the waitress said they ran out of jello pudding so this was "real banana pudding tonight". Wait what? Is it not real banana pudding all the time? It was decent. I didn't like the crumbles of the wafers all the way through but that's just personal texture. The homemade whipped cream on top was the most delicious part. All in all, I really liked the atmosphere of the place. Will I be back? First rime visit for dinner last night. This is a beautiful restored old farm house with a beautiful mountain valley view. My husband had the meatloaf with butter beans and whipped potatoes...he love all! The meatloaf is not whT grandma might make, but that us the point of going to a place like this. The sauce was wonderful (I had a bite). My entre' wS the tomato cobbler. It is delicious but very hot...each might had to cool down but then it is nothing but deliciousness! Cheeses, fresh tomatoes and onions plus crush...can' tget better than that. I alod had thhe sweet casserole fill of sweetness and a bit of nuts and a variety of spices. More heavy than you expect, not fluffy, vutoh soooo good. They have a good selection of beer and wine but their specialty drink list is really fun? My husband had a butterscotch drink and it was fantastic!. We love this restaurant! It is a gem among the fancier places. Prices are great for fresh ingredients and great service! This is the High Country's hidden gem. Farm to table my rear... Kitchen to stomach is more like it! I love this place. It's our new "go to" getaway whenever we visit our mountain cabin. It's in an old, restored and charming farmhouse and just a few tables are scattered about in each of the original, cozy rooms. Some are complete with fireplaces, tumbled brick walls, hand-blown glass windows, timber beams, etc. An intimate feel, despite being seated close to others. RESERVATIONS are a must. Try the flash-fried okra. Anything on the menu is excellent, but I find that the savory dishes (especially those with a jelly or jam topping or marinade) excel. Ask for Lela to wait on you, despite the fact that she's the manager, and to make your bar drinks, and be certain to tell her that "Ross" referred you. Come early and visit the original Mast General Store (not its annex) and sister shop directly across the street. read more

The sweet tea was really good, and the staff did a great job keeping our glasses full. So Over Yonder is a restaurant I would consider going back to. I had pork and beef meatloaf, my wife had a pimiento and cheese ciabatta with pork fat chips, and the kids had sloppy joes. My wife didn't do cartwheels when describing her sandwich, nor should she have because, though the bread was nice, the cheese was dull and lacking in flavour. The pork chips were pretty soggy as well. The kids liked the sloppy joes fine, though they both said that Lisa's (my wife) were much better. The meatloaf was generous, but had been overworked, the butterbeans were cooked perfectly but could have used a few more little bits of salt, and the cheese grits were really nice. We got to sit outside overlooking a little pond with fish and frogs...it was a nice place for a nice day, not spectacular, but a-ok. Oh, and the price is a bit high. read more

Came here for date night because my partner and I have heard great things about the place. Have to say I left feeling disappointed. Serving size for dinner was small for the price. Both dishes bland and in need of a lot of salt and pepper. My date ordered the chicken and "dumplings" special, which was actually a kind of chicken stew that came with very dry biscuits on the side. Bisquits are not dumplings here in the south. I ordered the crawfish etouffee and it was bland. Didn't have much Cajun spice at all and grits were very bland. This is an experience in upscale comfort food! The ambience of the old farmhouse with its original wood floors and brick walls is so charming! My husband loved his entree of Shrimp and Grits. I can't rave enough about my cornmeal Encrusted Trout with the Napa Salad! A good selection of wines too. We would like to make a suggestion to our server Justus, who served us very well, and to all servers, to consider not addressing customers as "guys", as in, "Welcome guys", or "Thank you for coming guys". This seems to be a familiar approach these days in the restaurant scene. It tends to downplay the fine dining experience of such a place as Over Yonder. Just a consideration. We are looking forward to our next visit there when we return to The High Country of North Carolina! read more

I ordered a bowl of soup for $7 but it was not an honest size bowl for the amount paid. Paid $3 for a side of Napa slaw the portion size was embarrassingly small. So paid $10 for a bowl of soup and a side of slaw, not a good value. If portion sizes were larger then I would have rated it five stars. read more

The food was very good. My wife had the pan-fried NC Rainbow Trout which was very delicate, thinly breaded and tasty. The sweet potato casserole that came with it was excellent. I had the tomato cobbler which was interesting, but I think I'd choose something different the next time. The only thing I really did not care for were the green beans, which were very al dente and had too much garlic for my taste. On the other hand, the chocolate chess pie with ice cream was heavenly. The restaurant itself is set in an old home and is quite intimate with only a few tables in each room. The service was outstanding, and the moonshine cocktails were unique with a sneaky punch to them. Overall a very enjoyable setting and meal. Maybe we're missing something given that this restaurant has an average of 4.5 stars & was also recommended to us, or maybe all those stars are solely from fans of "Southern" cooking, or maybe there's no accounting for poor taste, but our dinners there earlier this week were lousy! My wife's saute'd trout (one of Over Yonder's supposed signature dishes) was bland, boring & just slapped on the plate w/ the sides. My shrimp & grits was swimming in some brown gravy (worcestershire?) that didn't mesh w/ the grits & was pointless. We also each order a cup of red pepper & andouille sausage soup. It was ok but came unaccompanied, meaning no bread, no crackers, & no soup spoon (regular spoon instead)! And to beat it all the entrees' are expensive & WAY over priced considering that this restaurant is really just peddling mediocre Southern diner food. So unless you're a fan of Southern back woods food, don't bother eating here. read more

Some restaurants offer huge salads, mostly greens that are too much to finish. Our wItress was knowledgable and attentive. The atmosphere is always worth our trip. The mint, ginger tea was delicious.
