Love the dragon wings. Would be a 1 star if I didn't like the wings. Service is always poor every time we go. Put in a to go order for the wings last night. We were told 20 minutes they would be ready. Showed up 20 mins later and they weren't ready. We waited another 20 minutes. Got home and looked at the receipt and found out they charged us an additional 1.75$ fee for a to go order. What a rip off. Oh and they burnt our wings on top of that. read more

I've lived in Helena for 5 years and never been here. I drive past it all the time going to St. Peter's. Decided to try it, the parking lot always seems fairly full, so that's a good sign right? I was a little shocked at the prices, not because I mind paying that much but because the atmosphere was certainly lacking and the menu was very boring. I had the Overland Chicken which the waitress assured me was the best dish on the menu. Wrong. The chicken was super dry, the sauce on top was not any type of hollandaise sauce I've ever seen, It was just plain gross. The waitress was nice and attentive, though. I have eaten here 4 different times. At best it was ok. One time I ordered a French dip. The sauce was so salty they must have accidentally dropped the salt shaker in the sauce. I nearly vomited and couldn't even eat the meal. I pointed it out to waitress. She said sorry, took it away, never resolved the issue, never brought me a new plate, and charged me full price. The food here is awesome...especially the Dragon Wings (Best wings I've ever had!) and the Prime Rib! The Reuben is to die for and so is the Crab Salad! The service is awesome and the drinks are great! It's my neighborhood pub and I just love this place! It's got a casual environment so it's comfy and a relaxing place to unwind after a busy day. The manager of the Overland however is RUDE & bitchy all of the time. She treats her employees horribly and is always assuming the very worst of them. Good thing she's rarely around, or I'd have to find a new place to hang out. Other than her, this place is a true gem in Helena! read more

I love the Overland. The chicken strips are out of this world. I don't drink but I've heard they have a good bar. The service is not good - it's like they're mad you're there. I haven't been in since their remodel-I look forward to seeing it! read more

Always a good meal here. I stay at the Fairfield Inn a lot and walk down. Nice sports bar or in the restaurant. The staff is always nice and quick. Wings are unique and pretty good. Haven't had the Prime Rib yet but I here it's good. read more

I should have trusted most of the other reviews. Best part of my meal was the salad. Raspberry vinaigrette was tasty. Unfortunately the $30 ribeye was very fatty and tasteless. I've made better ribeyes from Walmart with some salt and pepper. At least the service was pretty quick. Never again! read more

Great "western" ambiance, good selection of beer 12 local (all Montana), 6 neighboring states (wa & or) and 6 typical domestic (bud, bud light, miller etc.). folks tout their steak, well bad news, the Steak was tasteless. I don't mean bad, I mean "absent of flavor" so I had steak sauce flavored meat. Some like that, I prefer a piece of dead cow to stand on its own. I will go back, but I will not go there for a steak, more like a burger or chicken joint. Great little place to watch the game and have a beer! read more

We've relied on Yelp's reviews and rating in the past, but doubt some reviewers have given Overland Express a valid rating. We ordered the special shown at the entrance, a chicken fried steak with smashed potatoes and beef barley vegetable soup ($13.50) and a ribeye steak sandwich with the same delicious soup ($14.50). The soup arrived quickly and was too hot to eat right away, but thick and flavorful beyond words. Our main meals were delivered five minutes later. The chicken fried steak was crunchy around the edges and cooked perfectly, complimented with a cream gravy. As good as any we have ever had, and much better than most. Delicious! The steak sandwich covered the plate and hid the toasted bread slice. It was hot, seasoned correctly and done precisely medium, as ordered. We couldn't have been more satisfied with our meals. Quick service and a pleasant waitress. I don't know about the other menu items and prices, but suspect the high quality food and service carries over to everything. My only warning is to arrive early because the bar was packed and parking lot filled by 5:15. The restaurant began filling after 5:30 and the dining rooms were nearly filled by 6:00 on a Thursday night. read more

Haven't eat at the Overland in years, we just stopped by for a quick late lunch on Sunday late afternoon, only a few people at the bar, we weren't quite sure how the food was going to be. We are impressed!!! Order salads and the greens were fresh, crisp and really good. We recommend the Reuben and the French dip... Great experience. No wonder, as we left, more and more people were coming in. Must be one of the best restaurants in town! Great location if you are driving through town. read more

For wings and a beer this place is ok. For anything else, save your money and your time. Microwaved prime rib, stale potatoes, shrimp scampi for $25 with 3 medium-sized overcooked shrimp....all things you can expect at the Overland. Don't think the disappoint will end quickly though. I have not been to the Overland Express in quite awhile but wanted to give them a try after they reopen after an unfortunate kitchen fire. VERY disappointing experience!!! I had ordered a med rare ribeye steak it was served to me well done!!! Our server was very kind in returning my meal to the kitchen and bringing a new and different meal of prime rib to me. The only thing I can say about this meal was adequate. I felt the cuts of meat used were very low quality. The ribeye meal was priced at 28$$. Also the over all cleanliness left something to be desired. Everything was covered in dust dead flies on the window sills. They should have used the several months they were closed getting their kitchen back together to deep clean their dinning area. I remember when they were new to Helen and had wait times to be seated. I know you can do so much better Overland Express!!!! PS the only reason I have 2 stars was because our server is as so pleasant and accommodating. read more

I felt compelled to write this review after seeing all the negative reviews on here. Let me preface by saying that I've been to Helena a handful of times over the past year for work. Each time I only spend one night. I've been very curious about Overland Express since it's across the street from the hotel I stay, but I've never been based off the reviews. Well, tonight I didn't feel like the hotel restaurant and I decided to take a risk and go. Boy was I glad I decided to try it! Initially the service started a little slow and I was telling myself that I shouldn't have come and that the reviews were right. Once my food came, the waitress was very attentive and swung by multiple times to check on me and bring refills. As far as the food, it was very good. I got the small sirloin. It was cooked as I ordered it (medium rare). The salad was excellent! I was happy to see they used field greens and not just iceberg. The ranch dressing was good too. Again, the steak was very good... juicy and tasty. The fries were great too... hot and crispy. Granted, this isn't the best steak I've ever had and it was a tad pricy, but all in all I was not disappointed at all. I will definitely be back! read more

Despite the negative reviews, I went to the OE for lunch today with my mom who considers herself a food critic. We were in the mood for something light, so we opted for a bowl of clam chowder rather than a burger. For all of you that had a bad experience with the food being "dry" or "shoe leather-like", please go back and have their homemade clam chowder. Overland Express serves a very decent lunch. I have not been there at dinnertime yet. We live close by but for the longest time we never considered eating there because our perception was that it was more of a bar. One day we decided to try it for lunch and were very pleasantly surprised. We LOVE their Reuben Sandwich. Every soup we have tried has been very very good. Salads are really good too. The decor is nice, the waitresses are friendly and give great service, the food arrives quickly which is great if you are on a lunch hour. They have quite a varied menu, but we stick to the soup/salad/sandwich every time we go. I will say that we had lunch there today and I ordered the french dip (which I have enjoyed immensely there previously) and the au jus was WAAY too salty. Like I almost died when I tasted it...but that has never occurred before, and they were really busy with big family groups (two days before Christmas) so I will treat that as a minor fluke this time! This restaurant is walking distance from Red Lion and Super 8 and even another hotel (Marriott?) so if you are visiting Helena and staying in one of these hotels, you should be OK walking over for a meal at the Overland Express. read more
