We celebrated our anniversary dinner here in October and I enjoyed my experience a lot. There is plenty of parking and reservations are recommended. Clam Chowder - This is a must here! It comes with bone marrow!!! Delicious. Gnudi - This is very creamy and it's most similar to gnocchi. Short rib - This is good, but of course because it is ribs, you don't get that much meat. I Skirt steak - Get this if you want MEAT!! The portion is good. Really though, any of the meats you get here are good. Chorizo - I got this so I can try all of their meats. This one wasn't tough to chew as sausage typically is. Tres leches cake - This was done well. The fruit on it balances the thickness of the cake. Service was really good. I will admit I had some high expectations coming here. We came here for our wedding anniversary and the service was attentive. I think we had at least 3 different people coming by to check on us. Sometimes offering the same thing 3 times, i.e. dessert was offerred by the waitress, bus boy (maybe?) and who I believe was the floor manager. They even gave us these cute espresso shots of a potato cream soup to try. I honestly can't remember what it was called, and it was in fact delicious. I am a sucker for brussel sprouts so I ordered the Salt and Vinegar Brussel sprouts which are to no surprise, salty!! They had a nice crisp to them which I admired but I didn't fall in love with those flavors. I ordered those in addition to the mixed Argentinian grilled meat for 2. It came with fried cubes of potatoes with A horseradish sauce over it and a salad. I am a big veggies and salad eater and the salad was very plain, perhaps on purpose. We also had to order bread as a side, which came fresh in a sleeve, a thin warm loaf covered in sesame seeds that we had to cut with butter knives and split ourselves. I didnt get to really see the rest of the restaurant because they seated us behind the hostess station where there was a curtain (that did little to stop the noise of hearing people come in and being seated but effectively blocked our view of the rest of the restaurant on the other side of us was a table so close to us we might as well been having dinner with the 4 sitting there. Overall for the cost and the ambience of seating arrangement I was less than wowed with my experience there. read more

They provided us a complimentary soup that was like a smooth corn chowder type with paprika oil. That was a 10/10. We also got the oysters which were good with the horseradish sauce, but the other 2 sauces were mediocre. The tomato burrata salad was ok, if there was more chimichurri sauce on it I think would of helped. There were a few bites where it was just tomato and no sauce. For our mains we got the prawns, which is find. The flavors weren't very bold. Also, the ribeye, which was very tender and the cook was perfect. The only problem was it lacked flavor. So it needed help from the chimichurri sauce. Finally we got the sorbet and chocolate olive oil cake. Those were also a 10/10. Overrall the food was good! The service was amazing. Very attentive! We were presented with an amuse bouche that was a cold potato "soup", with a dollop of olive oil and some other tasty flavors. Dishes are shareable, and I would encourage you to share, because then you can try even more! The spinach and ricotta Gnudi is a taste sensation. These little dumplings are covered with a Gorgonzola s dolce cream sauce, with steamed snap peas, with butter roasted almonds on top. I could have eaten the entire plate! The freshness of the snap peas, the sauce, just all of it was absolutely delicious. Order the beef skirt steak. It's THAT good. It's served perfectly seared and rare. The chimichurri sauce is delightfully delicious, and you should cover the meat with it. Every bite will be an explosion of tastes to enjoy. Service was great, and we lucked out with a great waiter. The best part was the vibe--loud with dim lighting. The food, however, fell short of our expectations. We tried the chowder, Brussels sprouts, octopus, skirt steak, and pork chops. The pork chops were the best of the bunch, but still underwhelming. Despite being marketed as an Argentinian restaurant, there wasn't much that felt truly Argentinian. Our server struggled to hear our orders due to the noise level. She never bent to hear our orders but expected us to yell like her. She also was a bit pushy with food recommendations, even after we mentioned that we had ordered plenty. She mentioned a couple of times that we ordered alot of food. She mentioned the courses will be spread out but we didn't get a break to enjoy each dish or course at least. Overall, this place feels overrated and not worth a special trip. Long overdue from my visit to PDX in June. Only had one fine dining restaurant on my eating itinerary and Ox delivered masterfully and memorably. Having it's own self parking lot was much appreciated without searching for street parking like every other restaurants I had on my list:) The ambience is warm and inviting with the grill up and center. The service from beginning to end was very professional and excellent. The presentation of course was fantastic as well. Having had late lunch only 4 hours prior to reservation, I felt the 16oz ribeye would be a good choice to share with wife and kid. (read good things about the ribeye on other reviews) Still had to try all the signature items from claim chowder to the raddichio/romaine salad to the tres leches cake and all, since it wouldn't be right to not experience it all while there! - Clam chowder/bone marrow = surely the finest quality clam chowder ever for me. A large bowl perfect for sharing and you could taste the made-from-scratch goodness of it all. The marrow was impressive visually, but the little extra fat didn't add much to the already best chowder ever. - Raddichio romaine salad = wow, this salad had it all and was perfect to eat with the rich steak. The palate cleansing bitter aspects from raddichio and radish, balanced out perfectly with romaine and creamy sauce. This is probably a must get salad with any of the meat entrees. - Ribeye = I've been a medium kind of a person up to this part of my life, but my boy has always been a medium rare eater. Leaned towards medium rare side of medium and the gentleman said they can do medium rare plus or something. Sounded like a safe choice. When the steak came out, I was shocked it was so rare looking! But it looked so fantastic so we all started slicing and trying it out to see. My goodness... so that's what melt in your mouth steak is that we've never experienced before... Wife and I went from disbelief of how rare it was to disbelief of how tender and good a ribeye can be!!! Best ribeye ever for me! We went from not being hungry to actually wishing we had some more of this ribeye! Totally ruined trying to eat steaks at home after this experience, and don't even show me a repulsive medium cooked chewy steak any more. If I had access to Ox close by, I would definitely save money and get max enjoyment just eating their incredible ribeye. Instead I've been throwing my money and time in vain at home since June trying to somehow get back even a hint of the Ox ribeye seared in my memory... I've even bought sous vide to see if that can help me, but gave up after half dozen tries. Reverse sear seems to work better but of course still not even close. I will now need to experiment with tempering maybe and hopefully don't make my family sick, lol. - Tres Leches cake = wife is not a fan of tres leches, but she kept asking while eating this one "this is tres leches?" lol. Perfect dessert. - Dirty grandma agnes = tried this out since I love dirty martinis, but this was the only fail for me at Ox. Guess pickle juice is not similar to olive juice, as I struggled to down this thing so I could get me a regular dirty martini to wash the pickle taste down. Came here for a birthday dinner and the whole meal was a treat. My husband and I shared the Asado Argentino for Two and it was nice to get a sample of the different kinds of meat but I would say the sausages were more fillers than really enjoying the meat itself. We would probably come back and order the steaks as the main meal. Everything here is meant to be shared so order as many appetizers and dishes as you can with your partner/group because it's all delicious. Beautiful Food, Frustrating Experience I'm really torn writing this review because the food was genuinely excellent -- thoughtful, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. But unfortunately, the overall dining experience was marred by a series of small but persistent service issues that left us disappointed. We arrived about 15 minutes early for our reservation, shortly after the restaurant opened, and were told our table wasn't ready. Not a huge issue, but it struck us as odd since we were among the first guests in the door. We were invited to wait at the bar which was fine. Once seated, our server shared some off-menu specials, including a beef tartare that sounded incredible. We were excited to try it -- but when she returned to take our order, she told us it had already sold out. This was particularly frustrating since we were part of the first round of service. She explained they had only prepared four orders of the dish for the entire night. It left us wondering: why promote a special that's so limited? Things continued to slip. There was a long delay between our appetizers and entrees. On its own, not a huge problem -- but it added to the growing sense of disorganization. What really stung was seeing a large party that had been seated after us receive two orders of the beef tartare we were told had sold out. Our server later explained that they had pre-ordered it, which made us ask -- how does one even do that? We had shown up early and still missed out. To be clear: the food here is truly special, and the kitchen clearly has talent. But dining out is about more than just the food -- and unfortunately, the series of small service missteps took away from what should have been a great evening. Honestly this has to be one of my top 3 favorite restaurants in Portland! Ox delivers 100% of the time, I have never been disappointed!!! I love their filet (ask for the sauce on the side - I don't like a soggy steak)! It's soo good, probably the best flavor in PDX for a filet! Also get the skirt steak, packed with so much flavor! Don't skip on the cheese empanada and the beef empanada!!!! The shrimp was also really good. We always get the baked ricotta - this time it was a different flavor. Still really good. One of my favorite places in Portland. Had a business dinner there on Monday and it did not disappoint. The aroma as you enter and the view of the open flame grill promises a great meal. We were greeted warmly and offered a coat check, increasingly rare but a very nice touch. The service was superb throughout the evening, whether by our wait staff, the food runners, the bar staff, or the maitre d'. The Knick is easily one of the best cocktails in Portland. Not to be missed. And the clam chowder with bone marrow is to die for. Ox opened in 2012 and its chefs, Greg Denton and Gabrielle Quinonez Denton, won the James Beard Best Chef Northwest Award in 2017. When you enter the restaurant, you're overwhelmed by the delicious smell of the wood fire grill. There is seating around the grill, so I'd suggest you check that out. Having checked out the Yelp Elite reviews, I was ready to order when we greeted by our server Stella. She, like most of the staff were highly responsive and super friendly. Before our order arrived, the chef sent out two small cups of Cauliflower Soup. It was delicious. The signature Fresh Clam Chowder was super rich and insanely good. It's not something I'd expect to find at an Argentinian-inspired restaurant. The Smoked Marrow Bone adds to the decadence. The Cheese Empanadas were served piping hot and stuffed with grilled corn and poblano peppers. It was exceptional. Because of the size of our starters and sides, we opted for a small 10-ounce Skirt Steak. It was perfectly prepared, sliced and oh so tasty. For sides, the Maple Glazed Carrots were incredible. It's not something I would order as a priority, but boy they were worth it. I thought the Spinach & Ricotta Gnudi was a delicious mix of textures and flavors (gorgonzola cream sauce, snap peas, butter-roasted almonds). My wife was less of a fan. For dessert, the classic Vanilla Bean Tres Leches Cake (with blackberries) was a winner. My go-to-cocktail was the Dirty Grandma Agnes, made with Belvedere Vodka, pickles and dry vermouth. I came here for an anniversary dinner this evening and had an amazing time. We sat at the bar and the bartender was very kind. Service here overall was very quick (although we came when it opened at 5pm) and kind. Great service. We ordered the dungeness crab bruschetta, beef empanada, clam chowder, heirloom tomato salad, and beef rib-eye steak. A complimentary mushroom bisque came out first and it was AMAZING. I've always been a fan of mushroom bisques, so it was a happy surprise to start the meal. The dungeness crab bruschetta was probably my most favorite dish from the meal. It was garlicky, but also summery with the yuzu, and the crab was plentiful. The beef empanada was also full of savory beef filling and had a great sauce that complimented it perfectly. We were also made aware that the clam chowder was the most popular item on the WHOLE menu (including steaks) and I can understand why. The clam chowder had whole clams in it, and the bone marrow added so much depth and flavor to the soup. Although it was a bit salty for my taste, I still thought that it was great, especially with the bone marrow. The two entrees--the heirloom tomato salad and beef rib-eye steak--were also good. The beef rib-eye had a lot of tendon, so it was a bit tough to chew, but it was still juicy and tender (once I cut out the tendon) and with the chimichurri, it was phenomenal. The octopus was so tender, crispy and charred on the outside but very melty soft on the inside. The combo of tripe, octopus, white beans, and tomatoes worked surprisingly well together, especially with grilled fresh bread. We're ready to get this one again next time we're here. The Tounge Carpaccio also featured a few unique ingredients that went very well together. The tounge slices were very soft. The prickly mustard salad was refreshing and the fried sweetbread added the perfect crunch to the dish. As this is a steakhouse, unsurprisingly they do their meat very well. Our Flank Skirt Steak was nicely rare and tender. The crust was full of flavorful and the chimichurri was so delicious with it as well. Their desserts sounded great but we filled up too much on all the exciting savory dishes that we didn't leave any room; next time! My partner and I decided to try Ox for our anniversary and it completely blew our minds! I've heard from many that it was pricey but it is definitely worth it. The price to quality and portion ratio is perfect. There is a small parking lot to the restaurant. If it gets filled up, there seemed to be plenty of street parking around. My partner and I are pretty indecisive and love to try a variety of things, especially at a restaurant that is new to us, so we shared the Asado Argentino for Two. This entree came with 5 kinds of protein, fried potatoes, and a green salad. This was honestly such a great option to try a variety of things and ensure you know what you may like for your next trip back. The potato's were hot, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, pairing with a tasty white sauce. The green salad was simple with a vinaigrette and avocado, but paired nicely for some crunch and cleansing of your palette. We ended our dinner with the vanilla bean tres leches cake and it was SO GOOD. The size of the cake was also bigger than expected and we were so full but we couldn't let it go to waste. Rainbow, bite-sized, softly Al-dente, maple-glazed then dotted with tangy chèvre - surprise! Crunchy pistachio. Delightful. Like dessert, but less sinful. Save room for that. Maitake mushrooms, get as many things off this state-of-the-art grill as you can. Still delicious as ever. Anytime we're in PDX we make the effort to come and eat here. The Argentina style steak is something to try. But this time we brought 2 friends so we can eat more! Started with well made cocktails. I got their whiskey sour, delicious. We also ordered a bottle of their Punto Final Malbec. It paired perfectly well with the steak! The sommelier helped us picked it, and it was also the most expensive Malbec. Lol. We started with beet salad, bone marrow clam chowder and the octopus dish. Great apps. Octopus was soft, but watch out extremely hot in temp, you'll burn the roof of your mouth! For steaks we shared the flank steak, short ribs, and the ribeye. I really liked the flank. It was very good! Since they cut the steak for you, it did get colder fast. But flavors still there and dipping sauces on point! I went to Ox after they were published as a great restaurant in The NY Times. It is extremely cute, especially their outdoor seating. And the waiter was super kind and funny. We really enjoyed the service. The best dish was the ricotta bake which was out of this world. The oysters were good but not anything earth shattering. And the main dish was not my favorite. The chorizo and blood sausage didn't taste good and felt as though they were under cooked. And the short ribs were about 80% fat. The food was not something I would care to return for. And coupled with the fact that it is such a terrible neighborhood makes me not want to recommend it. The area has a drugged out homeless person on every corner. When we were looking for parking one druggy was going to the bathroom on the same street as the restaurant and another homeless women walked across the street completely topless. My suggestion to the owner is to relocate the restaurant. This location is horrendous and reflects negatively against the restaurant. read more

We had come a tad early for our reservation, and were asked if we would like to wait at the bar. The bar was tucked in the back outside of the restaurant. It had both a bright and a dark speak easy vibe to it. The bartender was extremely friendly. I had gotten the Pillow Talk and it was a very refreshing drink. I would recommend it. We started dinner off with the oysters and the clam chowder. The clam chowder really stole the show for me. It wasn't thick like the traditional clam chowder that comes to mind. It was very light and comforting. The bone marrow added a layer of richness and smokiness to the broth. I know I'll be thinking about this clam chowder on many winter days. I highly recommend the bone marrow clam chowder. For our main, we had the skirt steak, with a side of chimichurri, and the fried russet potatoes. The steak was perfectly cooked, medium rare to the truest of the definition. The meat was very soft and delicious. I wish I could have eaten more of it, but I had filled up on the chowder. The steak paired nicely with the chimichurri, which had a good amount of bite back. I've never had chimichurri with as much tang to it. It caught me by surprise, but it was a pleasant surprise. The steak was still excellent on its own though. We finished off dinner with the raspberry and pineapple sorbet and a moscato. The sorbet was so floral and fragrant. It was very refreshing. The coconut tapioca pudding really mellowed out the sorbet. It was an interesting pairing of such a strong flavor and one that was so calm to the palate. The dulce de leche alfajors reminded me a lot of my favorite cookies. The staff really did their thing. Everyone was so friendly and attentive. They took the time to talk us through what we order when it came out, where our oyster came from, or how to eat the bone marrow clam chowder to make sure that we got the full effect of the marrow melting into the broth. I'm going to give a special shout out to our wonderful server Bryce. He was so kind and seemed like he genuinely was there to brighten our dining experience. Standouts for us were the clam chowder with bone marrow and fresh clams, and the Hazelnut Tort dessert. Had the short ribs and Ribeye. Both were good. We were warned that short ribs may be on the chewy side and are not fall-off-the-bone tender. We thought they were tender enough, but found out it's because the ribs tend to sit high above the fire oven and get more tender later in the night (as opposed to an earlier dinner). At first glance, prices seem high but we quickly learn that each dish is meant to be shared. For 3 people, we got by with 2 meat entrees and 2 sides (plus appy and soup). Drinks were outstanding. Came here on a Tuesday hoping for a casual seat at the bar. Our wish was granted and we were seated right away. Impeccable bar service, might I add. Friendly and knowledgeable staff that were easy to chat with. We started with a martini and the chowder with bone marrow, we both wanted to lick the shared bowl. It was so Damn good. Had the half dozen oysters and the ponzo sauce that came with them was A+. Skirt steak and filet with the grilled artichoke were the next round, we ordered a bottle of wine at this point with the help of Andrew, again, impeccable Knowledge and our bottle of red was great with our steaks. We had the strawberry dulce de leche cake and ate every bite. The food here is incredible, but what really stands out is the service. We felt like we were being hosted by friends in their lovely home. Our casual belly up to the bar dinner ended up being one of the best in Portland this week, thank you. read more

Love going here for a fun night or celebration! The staff are always great, very helpful, knowledgeable, and accommodating. The place is always very busy, but it isn't too loud. I love the exposed brick inside and the little bar next door! We've been able to try lots of different options here and a great way to figure out which type of their meat you prefer is to order the platter. We've decided that the skirt steak and rib eye are the best! My favorite appetizer is the baked ricotta for sure! Haven't tried a ton of their desserts, but I'm always on the lookout when we go! read more

Ox gave us one of the best meals we've ever had! We came to the Pacific Northwest for our 8 year anniversary and chose Ox for our anniversary dinner. We were not disappointed! Finally was able to make it here, had dinner before a concert, and OX is the perfect location for that. Also, I love they have a parking lot, so convenient. Everything was top notch, the service and food. Initially, we were seated in the back area, but they accommodated a request to move. The drinks were balanced and thoughtful.
