I've been to lots of sushi places and have been forced to shy away from your run of the mill rolls that are deep fried in tempura or drenched in sauce due to Celiac disease. This place has gluten free Kikkoman soy sauce (that they switched over because the other one they were using tastes gross and is the worst Tamari I've ever had- GOOD JOB ON THE SWITCH!) and every Nigiri or Sashimi I've had is on point. My favorite is the Butter Fish Nigiri(Super White Tuna) which not all sushi places carry unless they're legit. I come here for the freshness- the prices are what docked it down because Lafayette. I get it, your location is good but I'd knock a dollar off just to get more people in the door- you'd make more and gain one more star from me. Staff is friendly and always accommodating. read more

Maybe it was the six months in India (without any good sushi)...maybe it was the lack of great sushi places in Lafayette, maybe it was the lack of awesome service or maybe the fact that I just needed some Wagyu beef as a special...! In any case, this place is awesome! This place that just opened up a month or two ago is the bomb! And if you want to do a sake bomb, the staff can certainly help you pair the perfect sake with the Kirin or Asahi beer! From the perfect decor to the elegant plate-ware, the chef/owner Peter has spared no expense in creating a very cozy and inviting atmosphere. We showed up at 4:30 PM on a Saturday and did not leave till almost 7:30 PM. And that too because we could not eat any more of the delicious food! Every piece of fish is elegantly prepared, very, very fresh and served with pride! This is certainly one of those sushi joints where you want to yell, "Omakase"! Went here for a birthday dinner and I was very impressed overall. The service was attentive, friendly, and genuine. Our waiter gave us a lot of tips on what to try. Our group of four tried a variety of rolls and all of them were good. The Four Seasons roll was especially beautiful in its presentation. A very enjoyable experienced. Well, changing from Quiznos to this Oyama Sushi, I have to say they did a fantastic job renovating the place. I am saying this from an interior designer's perspective, and this place definitely welcomes you with a warm atmosphere and ambient. The design is very modern and spirit lifting. When I pick a restaurant, the atmosphere is very important to me, so I definitely give this place a 4 plus. The service is very good, the waitress and waiters are pretty good about getting you sited immediately after table become available, and the waiting for the food is not long at all. They are also good about refill your water. I ordered a dragon Roll, and it tasted fabulous, despite the freshness, the artful presentation really bring out your appetite. This place was great! Finally a good sushi restaurant in the area. I had heard that this opened up recently and never had time to try it until recently. It is in a great location with plenty of parking nearby. I went late on a sunday evening and was able to sit down right away. The service was great, everything was brought in a timely fashion. They kept the beverages full and were always asking if we needed anything. The food is excellent. I order a couple different rolls (hot mamasita, dragon, and sf giants roll). They were all prepared and delivered like they were works of art. All the ingredients were fresh and delicious. The miso soup was some of the best I have had, not to salty like some other local restaurants. I would highly recommend this place to anybody, I cannot wait to go back and try some more dishes. read more

My husband and I visited Oyama for the first time the other night. We were very disappointed. First the miso soup was lukewarm, the edemame was under cooked and almost impossible to get out of the shells. The tempura was greasy and disgusting, especially the eggplant. I go to this Oyama location because there aren't very many other sushi options in Lafayette. I prefer their downtown WC location more because the quality of their sushi seems better there. I recently got a salmon nigiri here and it still had scales in it...yuck! I also think their rolls are too saucy, and just not as good as their Walnut Creek location. I have been to this place a bunch of times and last week I went with my friend and we found what we think was a super tiny hair in out edamame, but we were sure so we just sent it back and got a new one just to be safe. But every other time I had gone everything was clean UNTIL last night. I went with my parents and ordered the Tuna Poki along with a few other things. While eating my tuna poki I felt something weird and pulled out 4inches of hair from my mouth. FAUL I KNOW. I called the waitress over, she looks at the hair looks confused and then start to look at all of our hair colors at the table. Then brings to sever over they compare it to everyone that works there. They then come back to the table and show us the hair and say its no one at our kitchen and stares at us. I mean lets be honest I can go on forever about what happened. That being said I asked to speak to the owner and they said he wasn't there even though I heard him say he didn't want to deal with it and walked out. No responsibility was taken, I was argued with and they made me feel like I planted hair in the food. PEOPLE really, why when I love sushi and food. Needless to say it was a horrible experience food wise and customer service. Not once did something happened to my food but twice. And shame on the owner for not taking responsibility for his restaurant and employees action. I would not recommend or support this place ever again. read more

The food was good, but that was about it. When we walked in it took 5 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. There were three tables that were empty just needing to be bussed, yet it still took 10 minutes for us to be seated. After that the service continued it's bad streak. We sat there with no drinks or any greeting for another 15 minutes. Finally, the server came over and we had our order ready as we had the last half an hour to decide what to eat. The food eventually came out and was actually very good. However, do not drink your water too fast as this restaurant does not give refills. Also, if you want your check you are going to have to ask for it. Once your food is dropped they do not check back to see how you are doing even when your plates are empty and stacked on the edge of the table. We would have been happier with the quality and quantity somewhere else. We each ordered a dinner bento box with chicken katsu and teriyaki chicken and a roll which I can't remember the name. The bentos came with miso soup and salad. The miso soup didn't have much flavor and the dressing on the salad was really salty. The katsu chicken was standard, but had way more chicken than the teriyaki chicken dish. The most disappointing dish was the sushi roll. It was served on a huge entree plate covered in eel sauce, mayo and sriracha. I guess if you are stuck in Lafayette and need to have sushi/Japanese food and have no means of transportation, then Oyama is your last resort. read more

What has happened to Oyama. Went for lunch today and the sashimi lunch included the smallest pieces of sashimi I have ever seen at a Japanese Restaurant. Handrolls also included barely any hamachi. Godzilla rolls half the size as it used to be. Only gave 2 stars because the grilled octopus was fair. Have spent thousands here over past many years but apparently need to find a new go to sushi joint as someone has clearly counselled the chefs to shortchange the clientele. read more

OMG we are so glad we did. It was a Thursday night and it wasn't too packed. We were able to get a spot at the sushi bar. We ordered the Mt Diablo roll (Amazing) 2 orders of Hamachi, So fresh and it melted in your mouth it was that good. We also ordered the Lion King (YUM) and 2 other rolls that I can't remember their name but they were both delicious. I would come back in a heart beat. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. This sushi joint is really really good. I have eaten here about 8 times in the last month probably. I like their toro (bluefin toro) and kampachi and salmon toro. The chef is very very attentive to our (me and my hubby) needs. You should get these various toros and their very special rolls (forget the name but it is spicy white tuna on the roll with spicy maguro tuna inside with cucumber and things).
