Low taste. Good plating and display, but no taste makes this a 'meh'. The service is sparse and not welcoming. Food is 'fusion' perhaps, but I can't imagine any palate which appreciates no taste. What is usually a steaming bowl of rice with chicken and broth was mostly a shallow-profile bowl with almost a full onion, some chicken, lots of overcooked rice, and a fully steamed scrambled egg on top. Love the sushi but horrible customer service. Been ordering take out every Saturday night for 7 years and they still don't recognize us. When they give our order away to someone else, or when they forget our order, or when it takes them an hour and a half to make the order, they don't offer to fix the situation, they just make excuses. As a long time customer, I expect to be valued and given a minor remedy for inconveniences. They just don't seem to care...guess they are too successful to care about the customer. After giving this place a marginal review, it was filtered. I've since gone back to give them another chance, and they must not have read my other comments. This time, the service was horrible. Sitting at the sushi bar, I couldn't even get the attention of the guy right in front of me. The ambiance was once again shattered by the constant chattering in Mandarin - save it for home - let me believe that I'm in a Japanese restaurant for this brief time. We absolutely love Oyama Sushi, and go there for a dinner treat on payday every 2 weeks:-) We are quite discerning when it comes to Sushi, and also keep a tight budget, but Oyama is worth every penny and is a cut above the rest that we have tried. Their wine pour is generous so one glass is plenty for me... and the rolls are amazing. Over the last year we have discovered our favorites, and there are many of them, so we never get bored. We always finish with 2 serving of Hamachi and just love it. We sit early, it does sometimes get busy. The service is impeccable and we always enjoy our chats with the staff. Parking is never a problem in back, to avoid the Trader Joe's nightmare parking. read more

I've eaten here twice. Both times had a really great meal. The sushi is very fresh (critical..duh!) so only compliments on the food. The only trouble is the service really is not great. First time I visited was with a girlfriend We sat at the bar and had to keep catching the attention of someone to get sake/wine, water, take our order after which the wait for food was quite long. I visited a few weeks later because the meal was so good. This time made a reservation thinking that might help. Again, long wait for them to take our order and very slow with bringing the food. I have to say, while the food is very good, the experience is such that I hesitate going back unless I have time to kill. read more

Large portions and nice plating. Miss our girl on the weekends as they moved her to week days. Keep in mind, you don't just have one server... they all serve you. If you need something, just ask anyone working there for what you need and they will get it for you. Although, they are not very friendly or customer service oriented... For example, if you need something they will get it for you but nothing else.... no small talk and no relationship building... kind of cold. Also, wish they would remove the bar top leaf that blocks the television. Not a good place to watch any games while enjoying good sushi. Would probably stay longer and spend more money if they removed it... especially since they never seem to put it down anyhow. They also need to stop using the bar for to-go orders! Takes up paying customer real estate. Just use the host area that they never seem to use! Other than that minor stuff, I would say that this place gets you the most sushi for your buck! In the location previously housing Quiznos, this is the newest Sushi spot in Lafayette. They are off to a good start with a very enthusiastic service-oriented staff that is friendly. I've only had one roll, which was good, and will update this review when I've tried a greater variety of the food - it looks very promising. The decor is nicely updated - you can only do so much with a corner location that is all window line - and it seems inviting to sit at the small sushi bar or the 8 or so other seats at the bar (not serving alcohol yet - coming soon). They lose points for not accepting Amex - making it difficult for some business people to easily expense meals. Wishing them good luck... read more

Oyama is not bad, but not worth the price. First of all, their fish is not that fresh tasting. Secondly, you can tell they are only a mediocre place because the majority of their maki are just glorified California Rolls - imitation crab on the inside, tiny bit of sashimi and maybe some avocado on top, and a large price tag. Fans of real Japanese cuisine should look elsewhere. If you are not that into sushi, and don't care to try much beyond the California roll, by all means come here - but if you're looking for good sushi, try Blue Ginko. It's just down the street from Oyama, costs about the same, and is SO much better in terms of quality and variety of sushi. read more

First, it was very hard to find parking. Then, we were barely greeted and had to get our own menus. It took forever to have our order taken and we had to ask twice for our drinks. There was only two of us but our food came at different times. In fact, as I waited for my sushi after my husband got his soup, I watched the sushi chefs do nothing for five minutes as they watched the soccer game on the TV that was better positioned for the staff than the 50% of the customers. The salad that was supposed to be complementary to my husband's soup never came. This place is over priced and under-staffed. Don't waste your time or money. read more

Ordered sashimi and udon with my girlfriend on our first visit. It was pretty clear the sashimi was reasonably fresh but the size of the each piece, freshness of the fish, and amount of pieces does not equate to how much I have paid at other sushi restaurants. read more

We went to the restaurant today around 1 PM, the place was about 60% full, only one waitress who handled both eat in and takeouts so the services were slow. We ordered simple lunches, Salmon Teriyaki and Beef Teriyaki, after miso soups were served, the food came in the comb dishes, one side of the dish was the meat and their other side was rice with 4-5 skinny asparagus, nothing else. The Salmon was tiny, although the beef was ok, asparagus were tiny and dry, not very appetizing. We are very disappointment. read more

My husband and I enjoy sushi dinner from Oyama practically every week as a way to feel a bit healthier after weekends of BBQs, parties and eating out. I've read the reviews below and wonder if we were in the same restaurant. We decided to try a new sushi restaurant and heard good things about Oyama so we decided to give it a try last Friday night. The service was slow, which surprised me because there must have been at least 8 staff and the restaurant was maybe 1/3 full. After being seated at the sushi bar for about 6-7 minutes, someone came by and asked if we wanted anything to drink. Every sushi bar I've been to the server is there within a couple minutes. Then it took another 10 minutes to get our tall Sapporos and order some food. The one fellow whom I was told was one of the owners didn't smile the whole time we were there and it seemed like the staff wasn't having much fun. Our server was nice. Enough about the service, now the food. I had live scallops...the scallops and presentation was wonderful! The taste of the unagi, tobiko and quail egg, and salmon skin roll were fair. The portions were nice. We had a couple rolls, not sure which ones, and they were fair, a bit soggy, maybe too much sauce. Presentation was nice. The prices of the food seemed fair, maybe a bit on the high side. The price of the tall Saporro's was another matter...we had two total, and they were $14 apiece. That seems extremely high. We will not return to Oyama....there are many other sushi restaurants in the area that we prefer. read more

I really wish I could give this place a good review bc I do love their sushi. The service is outrageously terrible. I have been a handful of times to just keep trying but this will be my very last time. The last time I came, I was seated, a woman came in shortly after me and she was helped. I sat for 10 minutes before I asked if someone can come over and bring us water. I'm just really saddened by this service. My boyfriend and I were a little hesitant to try this place because of the mixed reviews about the service, but we are so glad we gave it a shot!! It did take about 10 min to be greeted at our table, but once we put our order in, it was smooth sailing. We couldn't help but to applaud ourselves for ordering what we thought were the perfect choices & amount of food, which is always a struggle for us at sushi restaurants. We started with the board special Sake Toro (TO DIE FOR) & Kampachi nigiri. Then had a Golden Bear roll Salmon Crunch Lover roll (#44). Both rolls were outstanding. Very complex favors and textures. We've had a few rolls at the Walnut Creek Oyama that we would never order again so were really happy to find how good these two were. Hands down the best sushi in the Bay Area! I get them regularly. As long as you stay away from the fried rolls, this is a very healthy choice! OK, I'm a sushi freak, that everyone knows. What you don't know is how fantastic Oyama Sushi in Lafayette truly is! The service is quick and friendly. Yes, if you come at a busy time without a reservation, you may have to wait a few minutes for a table, but the sushi bar is usually available. However, the wait is more than worth it. The nigiri sushi is always fresh with very generous fish slices. The maki and uramaki rolls are HUGE with all fresh sliced ingredients... none of that ground-up leftover fish junk. Most sushi houses don't carry fresh Uni, but it's always available at Oyama Sushi. Plenty of street parking plus the Trader Joe's parking lot just across the street. I love this place! read more

Usually, I love sushi, but my experience at Oyama Sushi did not meet expectations. Their food was decent and they had a lot of creative rolls, but the service, well, let's just say, was terrible. I was enjoying my meal when the waitress came to refill my water, and she somehow spilled the whole pitcher on me. I felt like I was in a comedy film. After it was cleaned up, I saw a waiter serving a tempura dish to a different table and he dropped a few tempura. I left feeling disappointed. I should have read the reviews! First, the sushi was delicious...2 stars. The service...horrible! We had a 7pm reservation...arrived early...watched tables sit empty and not cleaned. We were told every 10 minutes it would be 1 more minute...this went on until we were seated at 7:40. We were never asked if we wanted drinks...sushi took forever...the couches had sushi particles all over them then on my pants...and our waitress complained about the other patrons. If they would just hire more help and go through customer service training I believe they would do twice the volume. I will not be returning. read more

We like Oyama and would probably give them 3.5 stars. Everything we have had us fresh. Some of dishes are hits and some are misses. We like the Lafayette Roll, Ocean's Trio Roll, Veggie Pearl Roll and the Shiitake Maki Roll. Their rolls are quite substantial in size.
