The hostess was not nice and set rules. Not really encouraging a second visit because of her. We arrived during happy hour. However, you only get happy hour at the bar. The bar is small and was full. We were given a "courtesy" by the hostess to order from the bar while seated at the table near the bar. Note: we were the only guest in the restaurant seating at this time. We said we only want drinks but were given menus. We had two children with us. The hostess that sat us, just appeared to give us rules while at the establishment. She got crayons and then scolded one of the kids by saying, "are you gonna say thank you or just take it out of my hand?" Ummm no, you don't do that. The bar had happy hour rates and we got another round of French 75. That same hostess came over and scolded five adults and say "I gave you a courtesy of one drink from the bar. You can't dip out and go to the bar." Strike 3 in my books. She ruined the experience as a first time customer. There is a better way to handle this. Expand your bar area. Way too small with only two high tops. Happy hour prices at the table would also solve this. Likely will not be coming back. read more

I started off with the French Onion Soup which had a sherry flavor and wasn't overwhelmed with cheese, I recommend this. I also had the sirloin chili which was interesting because it had pieces of sirloin and had more of a sour creme flavor than most chilis. It also comes with raw jalapenos on top which add spice to each bite. For an extra $1 you can get a large slice of cornbread which was sweet and not gritty like some tend to be, it almost tasted like poundcake. My wife had some blueberry cheesecake for dessert and it was homemade tasting with a not overly sweet blueberry sauce. The service was very friendly and have staff to constantly circulate and refill your water glass. Despite the good service, it took so long to get our check after we finished our meal that I was wondering at point do I go from diner to hostage? I was here because my wife won a giftcard but otherwise would have thought things were somewhat overpriced. I enjoyed my meal but can't say I would necessarily go back anytime soon given the many other places I can go for the same price. read more

Had Dinner at PJ's this past Wednesday night... Not a good experience however it was expensive. Ordered oysters, however the shucker needs to go back to school as each oyster was still attached to the shell. Waited 15 minutes for a second beer and on final inspection of the 'paid' bill, discovered I was paying for drinks for the table next to us. Dinner was NOT good. Wife had the beef rib stew which equated to a piece of fat on a bone and I ordered the chicken pot pie which was the worse I've ever had. Came her for a business group lunch one hot weekday afternoon. The place had a cute elegant vintage feel to it. Also noisey and lively, which was expected because its a popular spot...especially for tourists. We were seated promptly and given lukewarm water which annoyed most of the group because it was 92 degrees outside. Half the group decided to order the iced teas...which they don't have a sweetened option btw. We ordered calamari as an appetizer for the group and it was pretty good. The calamari was soft and seasoned just right,but the aoli-like sauce was everyone's favorite part. I also tried one of the oysters they had. The Salty Wolfe oysters were sweet and buttery which was exactly what I was looking for. I ordered the butter lettuce salad which was a lot better than i expected. The heart of palm with the avocado and slightly sweet and zesty vinaigrette made everything! Such a refreshing salad. I also had some of the side mac and cheese which was very creamy, almost like a alfredo which was different. Must try. I give this place a 3 stars because the overall experience. This review is strictly for the bar. Our bartender, Eric, was just an all around friendly and attentive bartender. PJ Clarke's has a "Frosé" drink, which is basically a frozen Rosé drink. Now, I'm not a fan of sweet drinks or even Rosé itself but for some reason, I actually liked this. I wasn't fond of the paper straw the Frosé came with, but it was a decorative rose print, which I'm sure was the reason why they chose the straws. But it was fine, I just switched it out for a regular plastic straw once the paper straw started softening up. I was hungover and Eric recommended a Jameson mule and it definitely helped me out as well. 2 thumbs up for Eric! read more

I thought this was a quaint little place for a delicious meal. I haven't been out to eat as much in person since COVID, and this place gave me all the good old familiar feel about a nice dinner out. I had the prime rib and it was great. The waiter was a bit iffy- the kind that likes to make a show of remembering everyone's order by not writing it down but then getting it all wrong- but that aside, the food was good. Small salad for main entree (two leaves of romaine in dressing) with two pieces of small stale toast on top. Stale bread that doesn't come out before the meal but after the entree arrives and costs extra at 4$ for 4 small stale slices. Still hungry after we left. Finally we stumbled into PJ Clarke's, and what a welcoming sight it was. Checked tableclothes, wooden chairs, nice bar -- it was all so warm and inviting. The hostess was friendly and the waitress outstanding. She seemed to sense that we needed some TLC. My friends' fish and chips had big pieces of fish and, even though a basic dish, it was still presented attractively. My clam chowder was just what I needed to lift my spirits. The sweet potato fries were equally delicious. I peeked at nearby tables when their lunches arrived. From big salads to friend chicken, servings were big and presented nicely. I ordered the lobster roll that came with homemade potato chips. Next time I will ask for fries. You get lots of lobster chunks. For an appetizer I had the calamari. I'd love to give this restaurant more stars because the food was great: asparagus cooked perfectly; great cheeseburger, and the sour cream mashed potatoes--yum. But the two star rating was because A. We came in an almost empty restaurant at 9:30pm and our food still took over 20mins for burgers and soup. B. Our waiter never came back and asked about drink refills, or checked in during the wait for food. C. When we walked in I greeted the hostess at the station with "good evening," and she said, "my manager will seat you." I recommend she be educated in the proper greeting of paying customers. read more

I just left this place l1my friend and I had a couple of drinks each which were very weak, some oysters that were pretty tasty but incorrectly prepared because they didn't bother to cut away the bottom muscle connection so you had to dig the thing out yourself, and the crab dip tasted like a salty mess with some fake Parmesan cheese crust on top and no flavor of any crab at all to be found. For some reason everyone was directed to the basement level around 4 pm as I guess the upstairs isn't open this early? The bar downstairs is small but the service was good. We ate here a few times on our trip as it was across from the hotel. For the cost we could have likely done better in the neighborhood. It's a great location just a couple blocks north of the White House. Close enough to the monuments for a nice walk (under a mile) or a fast $6 Uber ride. The wait staff was pleasant and while I have no complaints about them, I wish they'd been a bit more attentive and knowledgeable for the prices here. We tried a number of drinks here. They have a solid whiskey and bourbon list. I was disappointed with the Four Roses Whiskey Sour. It was too sharp and the lemon juice and honey syrup did little to flavor things up. The clam chowder soup was tasty but sandy while the French onion soup had a deep flavor with crisp bread under the cheese. Of everything ordered off the menu I'd say the French onion soup was the one thing I'd get again and again. The baked macaroni and cheese was creamy but far too overpowering of jalapeños. I'd pass on it in the future. The shaved prime rib sandwich with Gouda and horseradish sauce was just average. The meat was overcooked and there could have been more cheese. The place seemed quite clean. And the restrooms were spotless. While plenty of eateries in the area this one was easy to get in and out of but prices were high and wait staff just average. read more

When I saw that this place had 3 stars I was skeptical. 5mins after being seated I could absolutely understand why! Strike 1: Our server seemed upset the hostess sat us in his section. Mind you there were only 6 or so other tables being waited on in the whole restaurant! He was pretty dismissive and abrupt overall. Strike 2: The prices were absurd. There's no reason to pay $18 for a basic cheeseburger unless I'm eating at Ruth Chris or the burger was made by Ray Kroc himself! I opted for the wagyu burger, ~$24, easily justified, and far better quality for a $6 difference. Foul ball: I ordered a Moscow Mule. It came in a water glass and tasted like gin and Fresca. Foul ball: The table cloths looked like picnic blankets. For those prices give me linen or even bare wood. Strikeout: It took more than 20mins for us to get our check. Our waiter seemed to be closing out his older receipts, saw us getting frustrated, moved to another register and closed us out. I must confess, that I frequent this restaurant not so much for the food, but for the bartender and the atmosphere. Norm Taney is the lunchtime bartender (you might remember him from the Grant Bar at Old Ebbitt Grill, a hang-out for locals). He makes sure your glass is never empty for long, and he's been known to tell a risque joke or two on occasion. More often than not you meet someone fun to talk to at the bar. Just today I witnessed two strangers sitting next to each other decide to share and split their entrees. Amazing! My only criticism of the menu is that it's severely lacking in vegetarian options. But what I've had has been good. I especially liked the Mediterranean Vegetable Salad. Oh, and Norm makes a KILLER Cosmo. read more

The former NYPD and currently PJ Clarke's NYC Manager was helping this new branch to get going. He was very kind to ask us if everything was alright and as soon as he knew we were from Japan, he showed sympathy and asked us if our families in Japan were okay. I had my birthday dinner here the other night and from the moment we got there we had great service and attention to our party. I had 10 people come and everyone got drinks, apps, dinner, and dessert. We started with the calamari and it was amazing - I also had a few pom martinis which I loved. For dinner everyone got something different, I had the scallops and fell in love! They were so good. I can't say enough about how delicious the food is here. The chef even came out to check on us, which was so great. They brought me a birthday dessert and we all devoured it. They THEN gave us all free shot glasses as gifts - who does that?! High ceilings, covered with pressed tin. Old fashioned chandeliers and wall lights. Ceiling fans. Dark wood. Waiters in white long-sleeve shirts with thin black ties. Except for the addition of a turkey burger and the prices, the menu does not appear to have changed since the late '50s. This is the world of expense account meals. The restaurant is across 16th Street from the St. Regis and around the corner from the lobbyist central on K Street. If you want a bargain, try the food trucks on Franklin Square, two blocks away. This is 100% man food. Done well. Oysters. Hamburgers. Sandwiches. Mac and cheese. Chicken pot pie. My medium rare hamburger was medium rare. The sweet potato fries were terrific. read more

Three stars is just about right. I went here for a birthday dinner for a friend. The food was decent--I had a crab cake cob salad and the flavors were just fine- but that said, I'm pretty sure this was the first thirty dollar salad I've ever had. Prices were high across the board. Service was fine, not super friendly. All in all a solid B. The most memorable thing about the place were the gigantic, Corinthian style urinals in the men's bathroom. Biggest urinals I ever did see! Not a bad visit but in no rush to return. read more

Wow- worst of my DC restaurant experiences. Service was slow, brisket was the daily special but was fatty and dry. Mashed potatoes thin and luke warm. When informed waiter, he just said sorry, but did nothing to address. My husband said the burger was mediocre, and his zucchini "chips" were soggy and lacked any crispness. All of this for some of the highest prices for comparable food. Stay away. Table next to ours had a lost order and meals arrived many minutes apart- perhaps understaffed, but overall terrible food, terrible service, and overpriced. read more
