(This review is a partial repost from my personal blog.) PR's Place is probably one of the least known-about bars in downtown Kansas City, at least outside of the Hispanic community. Located on the eastern edge of Kansas City's West Side, PR's Place is a popular hangout for Kansas City's hispanic population while virtually unknown among the artists and hipsters found only a block to the east. You might walk right by this place and not realize it's a bar, the exterior resembles something more like a dentist office. PR's has an inviting, comfortable interior and though you're likely to be looked upon cautiously at first by all the regulars, the bartender will soon do a good job of making you feel welcome. PR's is also a popular place for watching sports -- especially soccer. If you are a fan of the World Cup this is a great place to watch it. Beer is available in cans/bottles only. By the way, PR's Place is the only bar I am aware of so far to have had a live horse inside it, when it received a visit by the second Warpaint, former mascot of the Kansas City Chiefs.

My husband and I actually drove past this place at first--I was expecting green signage, not red,…read moreso it didn't immediately catch my eye. Even walking in, we weren't quite sure what to expect. The entrance is small, and you're greeted right away, which was a nice touch. Once inside, it's very dark with deep red lighting--almost like stepping into a cave. It took a moment for our eyes to adjust, but once they did, we immediately felt at ease. The space is cozy and perfectly aligned with its purpose: it's all about the jazz. The service was great--welcoming, attentive, and added to the overall experience without taking away from the music. And the music? Absolutely captivating. It pulls you in and transports you--you can't help but settle into the vibe and just enjoy the moment together. We went on a Monday, so there was plenty of seating, but I noticed there's also a lower level that likely accommodates larger weekend crowds. There's a solid drink menu and a small selection of food, but honestly, this isn't the place you come for a full meal. Come for the drinks, stay for the music, and soak in the atmosphere.

There's two levels of entertainment. The service was friendly. Only thing is that they don't have food so eat beforehand. There was a hummus plate and some desserts. We had soooo much fun. Such talented musicians. This was a must visiting from LA!

First time here. Came for lunch on a Thursday…read more I love the fact that the door, is on the side down an Alley!. Makes sense considering the name. Lol. Service was fast and the staff were friendly. Coming for lunch during work meant no alcohol for me but I still looked at the drink menu. They seem to have some pretty decent drinks for a good price. Lunch for me was the Turkey Slider. They don't come with a side, and with the size of the 3 sliders... that was okay with me. The sliders were delicious. Not dry and great flavor. My lunch partner had the Nachos it's pretty big. Music was a little loud but not so much that you couldn't talk at a fairly normal level. I mean it IS a bar. I would definitely go back to try other things. And maybe check out their drink menu a little closer.

I wouldn't call this a speakeasy (other than the alley entrance and easy to miss doorway)…read more It felt more like a local neighborhood dive bar with really good food and what appeared to be a serious shuffleboard (hidden in a side room). We were able to grab 2 seats at the bar and enjoyed a Rueben (very good) and a Jim's beef sandwich. The cocktail menu didn't speak to me, so I went with straight bourbon (they have a nice selection) and hubby tried the old fashioned. He chose to upgrade to Knob Creek which made it an $18 drink, but it was well made, so all was good. I think their drink prices were a little higher than a dive bar, but not as pricey as a cocktail bar. The shuffleboard was a fun touch and we enjoyed a couple of games before leaving. Service was friendly (from the host/bouncer to the wait staff and bartenders). This is a place that we wish we had made it to sooner and will surely return to!
