20 minutes early to a hair appt, I consulted Yelp to find a good coffee place on Main St. Totem popped up and I trotted down Main in search of an afternoon buzz. It's tucked into the back of hidden alley, right off a lovely courtyard. The friendly barista offered me a cold brew - chilled by nitro(?). It was the best cold coffee I've every had! Rich, with a little hint of sweet caramel and cherry notes - very smooth, no sugar or milk needed. I'll make it a point to come back when I have a hair appointment and maybe even before! read more

As a strong Placerville supporter (my parents were born and raised here), I'm so excited to come up once or twice a year from SoCal to see how the foodie game has changed. Placerville has changed substantially over the years, starting to cater more to the tourist industry, particularly over the fall and Christmas holidays. To finally see a coffee shop such as Totem is so wonderful! And they did not disappoint. Also I love places such as Cozmic Cafe and Centro, Totem is really focused on a strong coffee product. They value where the beans come from and how the drink is produced. They make their own syrups, including lavender, vanilla, caramel- I had the lavender and it was to die for. Although the location is a bit off Main Street down an alley way, it's nice to be a bit more secluded. There's some great outdoor seating. They have food options, beer/wine, pastries. It's a lot more than a basic coffee shop and their food in particular looks intriguing and more focused on health/vegetarian options. If you stop through Placerville, take your lunch or coffee break here! read more

The best thing about Totem is the wonderful courtyard to enjoy your coffee. I live in Placerville and come a few times a year to enjoy the courtyard setting with family and friends. I enjoy a cup of fresh ground coffee, not the coffee drinks, and Totem makes a passable Americana. Unfortunately their staff provides awful customer service. I ordered the almond poppy muffin, which the clerk stated was almond poppy seed. Immediately I tasted bananas, which I'm allergic to. Asked an employee, who stated, that yes all their muffins have banana. When I mentioned that banana wasn't mentioned or posted and that I'm allergic, she stated "oh", and walked away. Didn't ask how I was. Poor service again, but I learned to always ask about banana now wherever I order muffins. read more

Adding to the list of many who love Totem. We live in Shingle Springs and enjoy driving up to Placerville for coffee here. The staff is always great the coffee spot on and the food is really good. I had a cappuccino today and my wife had the green matcha which is sugar free. We will make it back here again soon. read more

Excellent falafel. Scrumptious. If I were a local, I would become addicted. As it was, I was lucky to have stumbled onto this place at all. We had stayed at the Cary House the night before, but hadn't explored its back hallways and exit. I didn't notice the cute little outdoor seating area until I was throwing trash into the dumpster in the back alley. Once I ventured down, I found a lovely, cool-despite-the-very-hot-weather courtyard where we could sit with the dogs and use the free wifi. Despite its being virtually attached to our hotel, I had missed this spot entirely when I was seeking out coffee on Main Street that morning. I think I really missed out, and if I ever make it back to town, I'll get my coffee here. read more

This is a much needed addition to downtown Placerville. If you're not familiar with the area, you will have to go looking for it because it's hidden from the view of Main Street, which makes it a great secret for locals. I was highly disappointed when I visited totem. I'm a Main Street regular and have tried totem at least 3 times in hopes to understand what the hype is all about but I simply cannot figure it out. Their coffee is bland to say the least and often tastes watered down. Their food is dry and was nothing special. There's better coffee elsewhere on Main Street. I would consider going to Starbucks before totem and that's saying something considering I'm a bit of a coffee snob. read more

Simple, nutritious, delicious menu (including Kids options) and FRESH Microroasted coffee!!! Kombucha on tap, a few choice craft beers and a great atmosphere. New Favorite place in town. Brought to us by the folks that brought the Cosmic Cafe back from the brink and transformed it into the cultural mecca it is today. Yesterday, I tried the Brazilian Black Bean. Beautiful and clean presentation. The poached eggs where perfectly cooked (firm white, fluid yolk) and the healthy portion of herbed pico (!!!!!) I never knew I could love pico de gallo so much!!!!! Totem Coffee is by far the best coffee in the Placerville area. The owner and employees are wonderful, and they obviously care about quality. The milks are organic, and they use the good (Kalifa brand) kind of almond milk which makes a HUGE difference in the creaminess and taste of drinks. Everything on the menu is delicious (also local + organic whenever possible), and they can accommodate vegan or gluten-free diets with a variety of dishes. 10/10! read more

Fantastic latte! We were driving to the Bay Area from Tahoe and in need of a little pick me up. We LOVE good coffee and always search it out over Starbucks. This place was so great! This place really does live up to the hype. Your jaw sort of drops when you walk into this gorgeous courtyard with crawling vines and fountain running. It looks like a little piece of Carmel - without all the tourist crowds. It is down a walkway, so I could see how you might miss it. The video review on how to find it was a big help. As for the coffee - the vanilla latte was very good and she made beautiful foam even though it was to-go, which the coffee lover in me really loved. I will say that they were a little put off when we asked for some whipped cream in small cups for the kids (the gluten free baked goods weren't a huge hit - even though they were delicious) and I would've liked to see a little more friendliness. But, overall, a really special place and we will be back. read more

Quick update: the Brazilian Bean breakfast w/ poached egg (perfectly done), black beans, salsa, avocado and more, on toasted fresh baked crusty/chewy bread was out of this world! If you love those flavors this won't steer you wrong. Also, we've had 10 different flavors of their muffins and each one has its own special measure of taste and finesse. these bakers really know their ingredients and how to complement each one. Anything with orange, almond, berry, apple, and chocolate (not necessarily together!) - will satisfy your morning sweet tooth. I feel like we missed out with all these other rave reviews. We spent the weekend in Pollock Pines and decided to check out downtown Placerville on Saturday. We stumbled on Totem coffee and decided to check it out. I felt like the staff weren't friendly that day.. I was looking for a snack for my toddler and the gentleman at the counter didn't make any suggestions, didn't hand me a menu, just didn't really seem to care at all. My husband and my dad both ordered a hot coffee drink and neither were thrilled about it. Maybe it was just an off day for the cafe. read more

We have been coming here since they opened. Our order is always the same ( large chai tea late with hemp milk, and the marinated tofu toast). Often times we will try one of the fabulous doughnut options that they have and we have never been disappointed. The staff are very friendly and the ambiance is very nice as well. We appreciate that the chai tea late is not over sweetened, allowing us to taste all of the spices as they are. Over all, highly recommend!!!! read more

This coffee shop is hidden which makes it kinda an adventure to walk in through a little shopping center. It's like a breakfast nook next to a pretty fountain on the inside of this coffee shop, you get a bohemian urban ambiance vibe . This is a place to mostly relax , but the coffee is not as good.... and the people who work there can be a little arrogant. The cashiers are mostly in their 20's dressed trendy.
