Drove all the way here from Elk Grove to meet with a friend for some caffeine and dessert! We came right when they opened but wow it smelled amazing the moment we walked in! You can get your caffeine fix from their coffee/tea menu, purchase packaged chocolates (makes for a nice gift!), freshly baked cookies and cupcakes, or choose from the wide variety of gelato. I had to try the gelato latte - the matcha with passionfruit was listed as a drink this month so it intrigued me! They serve it with a tiny spoon, giving you an ice cream float feel. I actually preferred it better before I fully mixed in the gelato with the drink. The passionfruit flavor was definitely the most prominent over the matcha flavor but it was a nice little treat. Not sure I'd spend $10 for it, but maybe I'd just go with a different flavor instead. I saw they had ube gelato and that would be amazing in a latte! The cookies were also a must. All five of the flavors sounded great so that's exactly what I ordered. They are larger cookies, and only $5 this month! My favorite was the cornflake marshmallow which is what I was most excited about, so it didn't disappoint. The salty crunch is perfect against the gooey marshmallow texture. My next favorite was actually the brown butter chocolate chip - can't go wrong with a classic. The Oreo mint chip and Biscoff cheesecake were too sweet for me. The lemon meringue was nice and the meringue center was so unique, but I couldn't eat it all at once, and the lemon flavor overpowered everything in the box. The place itself is cute, only room for a couple tables inside but there is some outside seating. If I was a local I'd definitely frequent for their rotating cookies and the gelato! read more

This place is such a little gem! I do not think of myself as a food connoisseur but I have a European palate which, unfortunately for me is very, very difficult to please. Shorty's quickly turned into one of the few places (the only one in Placerville) that makes my taste buds sing! Their chocolate cakes are decadent, their donuts pillowy soft (butter and salt being my favorite) and the most surprising of all; their canned tiramisu. I do not think it contains marsala per the original recipe but even so, it is by far superior to any other tiramisu I have had in the US. I do believe the owners have chosen to invest in good quality ingredients and it shows. I have yet to try their gelato so I cannot speak to that but if like me you miss your European desserts, this place is for you. read more

Lemon blueberry doughnut: the doughnut had a really good texture and taste, but my husband thought that it didn't have enough blueberry flavor. Black Cocoa Mousse Cupcake: Good, but not great. Really dense and the frosting was kind of really solid. They also had a lot of chocolates for sale! My husband loved the honeycomb milk chocolate and we bought an espresso chocolate that we haven't tried yet. Overall, this is a good bakery and a must stop if you're ever in Placerville! We just discovered this wee spot. The carb-laden choices certainly made the trip to the county waste station a lot "sweeter". lol. We opted for a lemon blueberry donut, cinnamon roll, maple bar and coffee. All baked goods were quite good. My husband, the donut aficionado, prefers a more airy type pastry. These were all a bit more dense than what he prefers, but said they were "pretty good" (which is a compliment coming from him! lol. We gave all of the baked goods a thumbs up, with the lemon blueberry coming out as the distinct winner. It pains me to say that the coffee was just OK. Starbucks was right in front and might be a better choice for coffee snobs. cringe.... BUT the Baked goods are DEFINITELY better at Shorty's, though! Admittedly, I prefer to support local, small businesses. It seemed like the vast majority of folks were getting their goodies to go. We enjoyed sitting outside and watching the steady flow of locals marching out with their goodies -- huge grins galore. Nothing like carb laden treats to conjure up a good mood, eh?! From the other reviews I've read, it seems like this place has a tried and true following. Some claim that their donuts are "the best". I think of all the cinnamon buns I've had in my life, these taste less sweet, which can be a good thing. Treats without too much guilt. The cookies are also large and pretty tasty. I bought the raspberry breakfast cookies for the BD but he never got to try them. The center was a little underdone for both, very soft and gooey. But once I put them back in the toaster they were great. Then I ate them both. Loved the yuzu drink. I can't remember if it was tea or lemonade but it had that bright citrus flavor and was sweet. Came back again and they didn't have yuzu so I tried the iced strawberry with green tea. This wasn't super sweet, good for those who don't want that, but it had a kombucha vibe to it, except not as bubbly. Had that fermented alcohol taste. I wasn't expecting that. I'm not sure if I would order it again, I do enjoy kombucha though. The raspberry gelato was DELICIOUS! Tart and a little sweet and perfect for these dumb triple digit temps. I also got their butter and salt donuts which I haven't tried yet but I remember that they were my favorite donuts from back in their food truck days. I love the doughnuts here, I've been a fan for a few years since they were served at an Apple Hill farm. They're so dense it's unlike any other doughnut I've ever had. I wanted to see what the shop was like so I stopped by. I got the Christmas cookie doughnut. It was good the doughnut itself but I thought it could have used a little more flavor. I was tempted to get something else but honestly there were soooo many options I felt a bit overwhelmed so I stopped at the one doughnut. I do wish prices were more visible.
