Utterly straightforward: walk in, they do the smog check, you get your paperwork back, you leave. Today I got in and out in 22 minutes. Given the absurdity of the smog-check system in California, getting in and out and getting the job out of the way is what I'm looking for in this service and Pacific Smog delivers this extremely well. I've been coming here for ten years and here's why I heartily recommend this business: (1) They don't do repairs, just the checks. So there's no shenanigans with respect to whether you are going to be sucked into unnecessary repairs. All they do is diagnosis. (2) They've always done a good job with explaining the sequence for the state paperwork. (3) The new location they moved to some years ago is flat/level and the waiting room is big enough. (4) They got the grumpy old guys off the front desk and now have cheerful clear-spoken staff. I am very stingy with my five-star ratings, and the only reasons I don't give Pacific Smog a fifth star - they're close, but I reserve 5 stars for the absolute best of the best -- are: * they don't have the most convenient hours (no evenings or Sunday) * a little thin on amenities - no free coffee (like one gets at many dealers, garages, or oil changing places) and the reading material is limited to old issues of Car and Driver. If you are absolutely certain your car will pass smog - sure... bring it here. My story is different: It seems that the people happy with this place are the one's whose cars passed smog. I just bought a used truck (which passed smog about 5 months ago) and it did not pass smog for this test. When I asked why - there was a blank stare - a void of space and time echoing the regions of confused thoughts like - 'What do I say that won't make me responsible for anything'. Then the person behind the counter uttered "don't know. Our computer can't read your cars computer." I asked for guidance on what it might be. "Don't know. Take it to a mechanic". That was it. That was the end of my experience at Pacific Smog. $43.75 for that. The test that they gave me - the emissions passed - but there was some computer connection glitch. This means they did the test, knowing that their computer didn't read the car's computer. They could have told this from the beginning and not moved forward with the test. Instead - they run a test as fast as possible even if they already know your car won't pass. MONEY for nothing. That is their primary business. My issue is unresolved. Instead of saving money on my next test with them, I'm going someplace else. read more

The amount of crookery and mischievous antics the "technicians" at this smog shop went through to ensure the vehicle i brought in DID NOT PASS was immense. First, it was an "ineffective dipstick" and the tech tried to explain how the plastic that holds the dipstick in the tube having a small chip in it was "dangerous, and doesnt seal the engine." And my favorite "If the engine gets up to temp gas can start spraying out and cause a very dangerous situation." Now mind you, i was instructed to take this vehicle to this shop by the company i work for and it was not my choice to bring it back. But after being looked in the face and lied to by every tech trying to get a few extra dollars by failing this vehicle i was sure i would never let anyone i know be taken advantage by these liars. The SECOND TIME one of the techs didnt know how to start a diesel truck, immedietly hopped in and turned the key so water got in the fuel and tried to fail it again for having a check engine light on (which comes on after that happens then goes out after a few minutes) so overall they tried to charge me something like $190 and i finally told them everything i observed them do, and retold them back every lie they told me and let them know i will not be paying for any services they lreformed because everything they dod was either a lie, or damaged the equiptment i brought in. The look on theor faces when they realized i actually knew more than they thought was amusing, they probably lie to people all day and never get called out on it, so having someone who knows what they are saying in nonsense right infront of them spilling it back to them was too much for them to handel and im not lying to you they let me walk out without paying a dime. It's a smog station right? Well it's a pain in the butt to get your car in to be smogged. They were super busy both times I was there and they acted like they were doing me a huge favor by smogging my car. After waiting an hour for my car, I find out that the test is going to be double the cost because they didn't realize my car needed the advanced smog test. I wasn't pleased, however I was amused that some mid-life crisis la-de-da Mercedes failed its smog check right before mine. This place is stupid busy, they don't need your business because there are 12 people in line behind you. They actually charge you extra for having to read and enter the data, instead of scanning a bar code. They don't give you a free re-test if you fail.
