Dangerous. I just popped in after noticing a table of Mother Jeans. I have a few pairs, but I was hoping they had these particular jeans I haven't been able to locate in my size. They did! Pacific Trading Co is unique in every way. If you're looking for a shop with an array of clothing that you won't find anywhere else that is also fashionable and original, this is your spot. My only regret after one visit is that they don't have men's clothes as well! This was one of the strictest businesses I've yet visited in terms of COVID-19 guidelines. Sanitize when you walk in and only a very small amount of people allowed in an otherwise spacious store. All that was good with us, and we proceeded to browse the aisles. My wife and her friend found plenty of great options and even bought a few. Not cheap - but when you are looking for something unique that is also quality, it shouldn't be. By the way - there seems to be a trend of reviews here from people who say they were "followed around the store." We were not. We found all the ladies there quite helpful, actually. I also wouldn't see it as unjustified for them to follow some folks around the store anyway since there is a higher crime and theft rate in this downtown strip. read more

I do like popping in here to look around. So far I've purchased a total of three items. All separate times. A necklace, sweater, and a shawl. This isn't your average cheap store, prices are steep, but the good news, is they have a sale rack in the back. That's where I explore and conquer, and the jewelry counter. The ladies who work here, are super amped up ready to help you out. It's worth taking a moment to check it out and support local business. The way the store works, is they sell different clothing companies (Free People, Cut Loose, Eileen Fisher, etc..) and have them all in their own personal locations. Just came in to check out some clothes because I've heard they have very nice clothing. When I walked in I was greeted at the door, which is totally fine. Then as I proceeded to just look around at the clothes I was literally followed around the store which led me to feel very uncomfortable and leave. While browsing at clothes I don't need someone peering over my shoulder asking me questions/if I need help every ten seconds. This store is definitely made for older women, but young women should be allowed to come and shop too. Seemed like they thought I was stealing but I had only been in the store for less than a minute. I have been shopping at Pacific Trading Company for years,. It is where I buy most of my clothes. I will continue to shop there, as I love the clothes and know and like some of the people who work there: Betty, Claire, Judy and some I know just by sight. But I had a very negative experience there today, I bought a pair of expensive pants (over $100) about a month ago. They are comfy and tie dyed and I loved them. However, soon after I bought them the fabric began to run. I thought at first it was an anomaly, but now there are runs all over the front legs. I was not warned that this would happen, so expected they would get sent back to the manufacturer and I would get a store credit. Or at least that I would get a refund. The women who helped me offered me a 30% gift certificate, stating that this was the nature of the material and that she had a dress out of that material that had run when she scraped a piece of jewelry against it. I protested that there were multiple runs and that no jewelry had been involved. She was unyielding and said the runs are not noticeable. That is correct, but I don't like paying that kind of money for a garment that will keep getting worse. There are also hanging threads that she offered could be cut off. I am very disappointed by her reaction. I doin't know what would have happened had I talked to a manager I know by sight. But the experience left me feeling bad and I wanted to express it. I am a regular shopper there, and was even wearing a tee shirt and an outer shirt I had bought there. I would say that it was a very negative customer experience. read more

What I love about santa cruz and particularly this store, is that the customer service is welcoming and helpful, whether I show up in my flip flops and beach wear (this is santa cruz) or dressed up ready to go out. Unlike the big chains, this boutique picks out best of comfortable and contemporary... at a mid to low price point. Denim brands include citizen, paige and my new favorite, mother. Tops are trendy and often eco-friendly. Brands include michael stars, velvet and my new fav, oh-so soft yala. Eileen fisher is here too... but seems out of place, among the more contemporary styles. What surprised me is their shoe collection. Every last style and brand exceeded my expectations in comfort and fit. I go in for clothes and come out with a bag of shoes! It's like they know my poor tired sole so well. Do yourself a favor and try on their shoes... I told you so. The staff and store is well organized, with a person in the dressing room ready to help, so you don't have to chase anyone down to get a different size, etc... They treat me well whether I show up in flip flops/beachwear or dressed for a night out. Definitely worth a stop for the serious shopper seeking quality! read more

The clothing is great selection of styles and price points, it's always very well organized and has a great selection of sale items. I would give the clothing selection 4 stars. The staff is something else, though most are mature they are unpolished "Karen's". I shop there on a regular basis and have had only two people that knew the how to's on waiting on customers. So I must give it 2 stars. So sad that they can't get staff that is more polished. One experience that I had was with a staff member who announced across the store with a raised voice, that my mask was slipping down on my nose and to raise it! I always take care with mask mandates but there really was no need to admonish me. I was in the store yesterday and checking out and waiting patiently waiting in line, the woman in front of me, that was checking out was high maintenance and the staff member was helping her the best she could. Once I approached and placed my items on the counter the staff member immediately picked up my items and handed them to another staff member at the other end of the counter without a word or reason or an apology as to why. Walked by here many times over the years, but today is the first time I shopped here. The store is located in downtown Santa Cruz, very large store with plain designs, high end fabrics and a lot of fair trade, appealing to mature women (30-80 years). The prices are higher than normal, but comparative to Nordstrom's for pricing. The clothes are stylish and comfortable. Much to my surprise (based on other reviewers) no one followed me or my relative around at all. After we looked around a bit, we were asked if we needed assistance. The saleswoman was helpful, considerate and understanding of my relative's financial budget as well as some other specifics of choosing clothing (she needed access to medical equipment discreetly hidden under her clothes). My relative headed into the dressing room with an astounding 16 pieces of clothing and ended with a few select pieces. I do agree that the No Return Policy was not posted anywhere I could see and I was not told about the Return Policy. This should be immediately addressed by management. Besides this one glitch, we had a great experience. I bought a sweater and a jacket and will be a return customer. read more

Best thing to do here is hit the sales racks right away. It's a large store and they have a pretty good selection so you can come away with some okay deals that way. Otherwise it's very pricey for what it is. Especially when you can go online to Revolve or Bluefly and get the same brands for less. (Rebecca Beason, Sanctuary, Velvet...) They're less trendy than some of the other boutiques in the area though, so that's good... and they have some pretty jewelry which you won't find anywhere else. The staff is nice and the dressing room is large and clean with a nice big mirror at one end, always a plus. NOTE: Their return policy SUCKS. No returns. Only store credit for 10 days after purchase with receipt. Must return to the store where purchased. No returns on sale or layaway items. Holiday gifts must be returned by January 7th. I've been shopping at Pacific Trading Co for many years. Not once have I every had a bad experience. In fact I always have a great time with every employee I come in contact with. There are not to many women's retail stores that have this type of quality. It's my go to shop when I need some specific for an occasion. The customer service is fantastic. I was in retail for 25 years, and believe me owning a retail store and trying to compete with the internet isn't easy. Great shopping experience! The staff are super friendly and the dressing rooms have the most flattering lighting! I just felt lovely in everything. Bought 4 out of the 6 things I tried on. I like how the staff will give you their honest opinions and also make you feel beautiful when you're trying things on. Came away with five unique pieces in dresses and blouses and one necklace that I will be wearing for a very long time. I did spend a good amount of money on clothes that I do really like this holiday season at Pacific Trading Company. However it's unfortunate that each time I visit, I am followed around and questioned on every item I handle and try to look at. I am also followed to each space in the store and stared up and down as if I am going to shop lift. I even experienced a sales person in the dressing room letting me know just 1 minute after I started trying on clothing that she could take anything out of the dressing room as it could be cluttered? There was no clutter in this room, if she felt I was going to shop lift then why did she not sit in the room and stare and me there too? Then each time you leave the dressing room, you are asked if you are going to take or purchase the items in your hand. Just another way to make customers feel uncomfortable. I feel very uncomfortable shopping in this store and have no reason to go back. If you want to feel like a criminal, a shop lifter, stared down and followed on every footstep with uncomfortable questions then you will love this place. Very rude staff. Not welcoming. I understand it's COVID but restrictions have been lifted and masks are no longer mandatory. That being said, I respect that they ask you to wear one but if I want to try on a $400 jacket in front of a mirror for 20 seconds to see how it looks without a mask and no other people are around me, it silly to ask to me out it on. Both video conferencing and in-store appointments are currently being offered, and I opted for a video conference. Prior to your appointment, you complete a google questionnaire, so your chosen sales associate can choose items to present to you. I worked with Anandi, and she did an amazing job selecting dresses for an upcoming family photo shoot. I honestly love this style of shopping--the sales associates know their inventory so well--I feel like they easily pick things I love that I might not have noticed. Anandi presented the dresses to me on zoom, using a manikin. She described the fabrics, how she thought they would fit, and answered any and all questions I had. It was a little hard to see the colors and there was sometimes delay on the video, but that could have easily been my own wifi acting up. Regardless, Anandi was great at showing me the dresses very up close and far away, as well describing anything that wasn't clear in the video. You can opt for either curbside delivery or shipping. I ended up going into the store to try on my final selections. When I arrived, I checked in (customer numbers are limited for in-store shopping--you can make an appointment to shop either online or by calling), and a rack with my selections was waiting for me. There were only a couple other customers in the store and everyone was masked. I felt very safe as I quickly tried on the dresses. Having shopped here both pre-COVID and during COVID, I can say that this store continues to have an amazing selection, and a very friendly staff! I would highly recommend checking them out before making an online clothing purchase--you'd be supporting a local business AND it's easier, more fun, and more satisfying than online shopping. read more

One of the many women's fashion stores along the main drag of pacific avenue in downtown santa cruz. Parking is street only which means there is no parking, thus you'll make use of the parking garage behind the building or one of the nearby surface lots. This is larger then some of the close by stores, and thus has plentiful stock. The focus is on higher end conservative fashion. So no rave wear, but lots of shirt/slacks/jean combos along with the occasional dress. In the winter they'll have wraps and jackets, in the summer light tops and shorts. They trend towards all natural materials such as denim, cotton, linen, and wool. Note that leaning towards natural fiber will still allow for stretchy spandex like waist inserts. Towards the back is a small section of bra/panty combos, which will be of the practical non padded or push up variety. Good for yoga/working out. There is a small-but high quality-selection of clutches and bags and a small jewelry display by the register. There are numerous changing rooms, and two small benches by the front for hapless spouses to contemplate the likely hood of getting away to the nearest sports bar without being detected at. Overall the presentation of the place is very nicely done. The window displays are some of the best on pacific avenue. The store is fairly well staffed, and it's an unusual day where you won't be able to find someone to help you. On the off chance somehow they miss you, just hover by the jewelry display and someone will come up in no time. The person working the counter if no one else. Pro tip-the bargain racks,with last seasons styling, is at the very back. No returns, so be sure that you want that item before leaving. Pricing is on the higher end of things-the high quality and conservative style here comes up on the higher end of the pricing range. Just about everything will be around 100 bucks or so-less for the shorts, but a 70-125 dollar shirt is not uncommon. About the same for the slacks, more for the dresses. Is it worth it? That's up to you, after you see what you look like here. In my opinion if you are a professional woman, and you want something that isn't a pantsuit, makes you look like a man, or cocktail outfit, then you should mos def take a look at what's here. read more

Pacific Trading at either location is the absolute best clothing store and we are lucky to have them in our local Santa Cruz area! Since COVID, like so many others I have not shopped and I was so happy when the store reached out personally to say that I could make a private appointment and shop inside. The store looked amazing and super clean. All the employees were extremely professional in making sure that I felt safe and comfortable and I was so happy to be enjoying such a positive experience! Pacific Trading always carries a wonderful variety of styles to choose from with quality merchandise that is reasonably priced. The women that work there have so much knowledge of all the brands and what would fit my body type best. I am a woman in my 60's with a college degree, a paid off home, and money in the bank. Apparently I don't fit the profile of a person who can shop unattended. I guess I must have looked a little scruffy because I had just come from my private Pilates class. They follow you around, pretending to arrange things on the racks. It's insulting and so obvious. Got a theft problem? Put those little sensors on your goods or whatever, like other stores do. But don't make your customers feel like criminals. The clothes are nice, although very high priced. They don't have much in a real woman's size; I'm a 12 and but even their "extra-large" items are way too small for me. But the reason I'll NEVER shop there again is the way they act like they're just helping you, but they are actually "watching" you. Their store in Capitola is the same way. read more

When you see a lamp in the front window called the "Demon Seed" it's going to spark your interest. Sheer brilliance. There's a bit of something for every type of clothing styles. The jackets in the front were nicely priced and a good selection was displayed. Great combination of brands from Free People to FCUK and a few in between. There were a few cardigans that were crazy pricey like $228 but if there was a sale it would be worth the buy. There's a nice selection of sleep tanks/lingerie in the back that is cute and sexy. Next time I'll have to pick up some of the jewlery because it's pretty cheap..depending on the make but all in all every piece was beautiful, classic and timeless. After years of wanting a pair of their flannel pajamas, I finally got a pair for my birthday. As we were walking out the door the sales clerk said, "expect them to shrink a full size". I had gotten a size large. When I tried them on at home they seemed to fit OK, but I was concerned that the waist would shrink so much they would be uncomfortable. So we took them back and got an XL. Well they didn't shrink at all. Not the first washing nor the 4th, and now I'm stuck with a pair of $63 pajamas that I hate. They are so large that a 300 lb. person would fit inside them! Of course, they won't take them back, and when I called, the clerk was rude. I won't be going back there, and warn you that they don't stand behind their word. read more

I've dropped some good money here. There is a nice selection of clothing. I'm not going to lie, though -- being followed around the store always made me feel uncomfortable. When I popped in today, I noticed a sign on the door about cameras. Now, I understand that maybe they may have a problem with shoplifters, but I now associate the store with the awkward feeling of being watched and the feeling that they don't trust anyone who walks in the door. I'd rather just visit Nordstrom over the hill and feel relaxed and still get my Michael Stars and Free People. I came twice in two days to this store. First time, I had hubby in tow, so there was only time for a quick scan. Second time, came with my sis & mo-in-law. So, we had an age/body type range. Great selection of items. Considering the other boutiques we shopped in the area with $150 tank tops, this was "normal" priced. I would say it is comparable to shopping at Anthropologie, but with more designer variety. Service was amazing- maybe they could tell that I was having a shopping mojo moment (rare these days). But, I picked up a cute sun hat and a bracelet bangle. Great selection of jewelry from $20 to $200. They showed me everything in the case and had no negative judgements when I said I wanted to stay on the cheaper side. My sis-in-law picked up a gorgeous pashmina (nicer than usual NYC street junk) and my mo-in-law purchased a complete summer outfit (you should have seen the smile on her face!). I could not decide on a tunic top, and they graciously put it on hold for me. After we left, we all commented on how organized and efficient the staff was. If you're feeling lonely, pop into Pacific Trading, because they seem to embrace the Liverpool soccer team's anthem, "You'll Never Walk Alone" or in this case, you'll never shop alone. Staff apparently thinks everyone is a potential sticky-fingers, and they'll follow you like a pooch after a pork chop. If you can ignore the implied insult of being a thief, there are some decent pieces of clothing, but I see a lot of the same brands that are in Macy's or simple Michael Star tees that they've carried since the 1990's and which have tripled in price. Store credit only on returns and that's another reason I've opted to look only and buy elsewhere when it come to Pacific Trading. read more
