The only reason this is not a five is because I don't give them. If I did give 5s I would: Arrival: no reservation, on a whim, and at dinner (sunset). We'd just had a manicure and decided that since we were right next door to Pacifica and I enjoy the restaurant that we'd stop in. We were greeted by a very friendly host who took us to the outdoor table we requested (one that would be close to the sun, but not glaring once the meal got started). The entire staff was wonderfully attentive and not only knew the menu, but really took pride in their work. Eating: The food. I cannot speak directly for the shellfish dishes, but my bf tells me that the Japanese clam chowder was better than any New England chowder he'd eaten and since he's from New England his aversion to Manhattan chowder prohibited him from eating anything but white. He was delighted in his selection and he's declared it his new favorite soup (I hope my home-made matzo ball soup doesn't fall out of favor). Our appetizers consisted of the standard seafood fare, but a surprise lurked behind the foie gras and small, very rich, duck sandwich. Though the foie gras is not the most tasty, we're quite partial to the apple and onion recipe at Mille Fleurs, it wasn't bad. Main Courses: He had scallops and he said they were "tasty" (and that's good coming from him) and it was a large enough portion to get this large eater filled up. He's a runner so a lot of food is never a surprise, but he loved it. My choice was salmon over a bed of garlic mashed potatoes and it was great. Grilled to perfection and the potatoes were great. Departure: we'd overstayed our complimentary welcome at the complex, but we were smart and got stamps at each store we went to so that we could avoid any charge when we left. We paid less for our meal (we decided on the fixed-price menu that you get if you get there before six and we got there right about then) than we did our manicure and pedicure (and those were lousy). We will be back and if you are in Del Mar it would be well worth the trip, if for no other reason than the view at sunset and the service with a staff that makes going to a place so special. read more

Let me start off by saying that I totally HATE fancy restaurants that have that ridiculous plating around 4 shrimp for $30, especially when they don't taste as good as I could have cooked them. I wasn't bowled over by anything here, including my husband's ahi tuna. His mulligatawny soup was terrible but my beet salad was good and the strawberry shortcake we shared was disgusting except for the fresh strawberry slices and whipped cream. Waitress service started off good but rapidly declined as she got busier and she kept forgetting to bring us dessert and a coffee refill but the busboy was great. I ordered a Tito's vodka with blue cheese olives on an empty stomach and didn't even get a buzz which leads me to believe it was totally watered down. The view was nice for the sunset but we would have appreciated it even more had we shared a nice sandwich on a bench by the beautiful Del Mar beach instead. I'm sorry for the negativity but I'm a food snob since a meal has got to be great to impress me and this was VERY far from impressive. read more

A fantastically romantic night out. Great ambiance, delicious food and superb service. Fried calamari is definitely recommended as an appetizer . Swordfish was tasty and just fell off the fork. What can I say that hasn't already been said here? First: it was our anniversary so we wanted to do something different and special. We have eaten at a lot of local and remote high end places but my wife has been mentioning Pacific Del Dar for 2 years now. "okay okay we'll try it". I used Open Table to make a reservation for the first time. I noted we would like a view table. I also noted that it was our anniversary in the remarks section. Reservations were for 6:45. We showed up right on the nose and within 5 minutes we were escorted to the dining room. Suddenly the hostess stopped and said "I just noticed that nice table by the window just opened up would you mind waiting a moment while we prepare it for you? I was going to seat you at another table but this one is much nicer and it is your ANNIVERSARY! "Wow they actually read my open table notes!!! The only hiccup was after we were seated our server was missing for a while. When we found out who she was she was going over ALL the menue selections with another couple who were seated AFTER we were right next to our table. We thought oh we'll we'll be next. NOPE. She went right by. Now the only reason I mention this is what happens next was awesome!!!! My wife got up and went to complain and stated she wanted another server at our table a server who came over during this mishap to help us because she sensed our frustration. "Nicole" was assigned to our table and the rest of the evening was simply wonderful. Starters: Crab Cakes. Decent and the sauce was fantastic Japanese clam chowder: if I could order a tub to go I would have. I can't believe how flavorful and tasty this was. I've heard through other reviews how good this was but you can't even describe how great this was. Main course: (me) sword fish....perfect (wife) sea bass...perfect. Nicole comped our desert for our earlier trouble. It was not necessary but what a class act. She even earlier brought some blue cheese stuffed olives after a conversation with her about olives (also comped) Parking: be prepared to use valet. We arrived here on a Saturday around 5:30pm without a reservation but we had no problem getting seats in the patio facing the ocean. Originally we wanted to dine at Jake's but could not get seats and that was great. Otherwise, we would have missed wonderful dining experience at Pacifica. We each had early dinner specials which you can choose salad or soup and a main course for $25.75. My husband had mustard catfish with succotash, which was so flavorful and I had the flat iron steak with roasted potatoes. We also ordered a side of roasted Brussels sprouts and mussels. My wife and I visited this restaurant for a late lunch. We walked in and waited a couple of minutes before being greeted and escorted to the outside patio and seated. This is about the only complaint I have. Jon was our server and his service was exemplary. We indicated that we would be there a while. He was very understanding and courteous. We ordered our drinks and oysters. They were truly delicious. I had the fish tacos and my wife had the Mediterranean salad with seared ahi. For dessert we shared the burnt cream and coffee. Pacifica is one of those places you keep coming back to over and over, sometimes for just a drink, sometimes for some fish tacos at the bar, sometimes for dinner on that patio, it just seems like there's always a reason to come back. For me it doesn't get much better than coming to Pacifica and sitting at the bar, having Cameron mix up a drink and then throwing back a few fish tacos. Are they the best fish tacos in the world, No, but they're flavorful and always well prepared, and the relaxed atmosphere you get while sitting there chatting it up with friendly patrons (although they're usually a tad older than me) or the bartenders really brings it all together for a great experience. I mainly come here for the bar and bar food, and it's usually Thursday's for the half price wine night which is awesome. It's hard to go wrong with 1/2 price wine, plus they have a great wine list, lots of stuff from Sonoma or Napa that other people don't carry, like Landmark, Limerick Lane, Martin Ray, etc. On my most recent visit to the bar I had the fish tacos along with some mulligatawny soup, which you wouldn't expect to be good coming from a fish place but damn was it well seasoned and had the perfect consistency, just a fine bowl of soup. Last time on the patio had the sugar spiced salmon which is always perfectly cooked and has the right amount of sweet to savory. The mashed potatoes compliment it perfectly, they're creamy and rich and have the right amount of salt. In short it's hard to go wrong coming here, only time I don't come is when there are way too many tourists in town and I won't get a seat at the bar, but other than that there's no reason not to like Pacifica. read more

Came here for restaurant week! The appetizer and entree. Selection was quite good, had a variety of fish, shrimp, beef etc. The seating in here is phenomenal. You have a nice view of the ocean however if you sit near the glass, bring an umbrella cause there is no shade and it will get hot. I had the calamari and it's the best I've had in San Diego! They include peppers as well which gives it another flavor aspect. For the entree I had the yellowtail with orzo and snow peas. The dish was a little too modern for my liking but the orzo was very flavorful, the snow peas complemented it well and the smokiness of the fish was my favorite part of the dish. The bbq sauce however could have been left out. Overall, great place to come for a lunch and a nice view. read more

They are GREAT! It's my favorite place to get a Filet Mignon and Ocean View. It's not that the meat is that much better than other places, I just always really enjoy the sides and sauce they use. So as a whole dish it's in my top 5. Going purely by the steak, my favorite is Madonna Inn. My wife also loves going here for the food and view... but also because several members of the staff always recognize us and come by and say hi. read more

I went last Wednesday and my experience was fair. I haven't been there in almost 2 years and have always enjoyed the food, atmosphere and service. I asked my server about a specific wine and she had to ask someone else and her answer wasn't very helpful. I ordered the chilean seabass and forgot to tell them to cook it rare and it came overdone, and the waitress said that you couldn't overcook chilean seabass and I said I should have ordered it rare. It's really sad to see this one fall. This used to be a nice restaurant but perhaps with the aging population and less discerning crowd, the kitchen has been able to get away with pushing over salted and poorly cooked food. It seems insulting to the fish to cook and serve them in this way, honestly. The view remains nice, but when they can't even cook basic pasta right, you're going to have a bad time. Going anywhere else in the plaza for dining is probably the better choice for people who want good food to go with the view. read more

Been here plenty of times for years and years. It was always an Awesome experience. Got seated right away. From the receptionist to the servers are all Fabulous service and friendly. The food is always delicious and a great value for the money. This place has million dollar Ocean View. The only thing is I wished they did not take out their Japanese Clam Chowder Soup and wish they can make more desert selection. Bathroom is clean. They validate the parking. But either way I highly recommend this place and will always come back here. They're on my top 10 list of valuable restaurants to dine-in. read more

I had a wonderful brunch on the patio outside. They have bottomless mimosas here, which is what we were looking for! I had the pork hash and it was wonderful. The server Cory was also very kind and let us stay for quite some time. The only reason I am giving a 4 is because they cut our bottomless off with no warning or explanation of the time limit. We came here during restaurant week for my birthday and it was an absolutely awesome experience. I really wish I could give this place more than 5 stars. This place really offers the whole package; great service, delicious food and a beautiful setting. Much of our great experience was thanks to our waiter, Coop. He was knowledgable, considerate, hilarious and efficient. He really made my birthday a great one:) As far as food goes, it was all delicious. I tried the mussels, which came is a red curry sauce, and they were so good! My dad ordered the hamachi, which I think was my favorite thing I tasted all night. For my main dish, I ordered macadmia nut mahi mahi. I am a big fan of this dish and have tried it at many restaurants (including some in Hawaii), but this was by far the best I have ever had. It came with a delicious coconut risotto, which set the dish over the top. Overall, the experience is worth the price tag. I will most definetely be returning! read more
