What a fantastic view! Its worth going for just the view. The food was good. We went for lunch and hand a couple sandwiches. I had the halibut and my guest had the grilled cheese. Both were very good. The server was very attentive but did get the order wrong. Mistakes happen and he took care of it quick enough. We decided to get a dessert also. It was supposed to be a chocolate ganache/mousse with raspberries. It came with blueberries instead. If it says raspberries on the menu you should bring raspberries. If it says fresh seasonal fruit then bring whats fresh. Or at least mention sorry we are out of raspberries etc. I gotta knock ya down a star for this one. read more

I had a wonderful birthday dinner here last night and would like to thank the entire staff especially David our server. He was very attentive and engaging while provide excellent service! Rarely do I leave a restaurant with such high praise for the staff as I am a F&B Manager, but David did an amazing job serving our bottle of wine, knowing all the specials and giving great recommendations! The restaurant itself is beautiful with a view second to none. The hostess was very friendly and complimented my girlfriend on her dress. The manager greeted us with a nice hello and opened our bottle of wine that we brought from an earlier wine tasting. The food was excellent! My girlfriend got the chicken which had crispy skin and extremely juicy with a ton of flavor. The polenta base was very good as well! I had the short ribs which was done perfectly! David brought over a trio of ice creams which we really enjoyed! The bussers even took our picture on the patio! Overall, a great experience and I'll look to come back when we visit again! Very disappointing dinner there on Saturday night. We are staying next door and excited to try this lace. Waiter was very rude, made us wait forever between courses and practically threw out entree plates in front of us. He was handling several tables but no excuse for rude service. Tuna was ok but sat atop a mess of wilted, very bland veggies. Came home with the worst stomach ache. We won't return even though we were next door for 3 more days. Very mixed bag. The wine server was very attentive. Not so the waiter. We had the wines for the first and the main course on the table before we even had the chance to order the food. The first course was excellent, the steak was well done not medium as ordered. Did not have the chance to complain since the waiter was nowhere to be seen. When the check arrived we knew the reason for his attitude or the lack thereof: 20% service charge was already added on. We drove down today for a late lunch. It's been awhile since we've been here. This is a great experience from valet parking our car to being seated at the railing with a wonderful view of the Pacific Ocean and the Ventana wilderness. We both ordered spicy bloody Mary's. My wife ordered the Cobb salad and I had the 'market burger' with white cheddar cheese. Both of our meals were delicious. The fries with my burger were great (my wife kept picking at them). Our server was excellent. She seemed to have great timing as to when to appear and when to be invisible. Great food, good value and nice people. This is a five star operation. read more

Disappointing experience: an uninspiring menu, mediocrefoofsub-standard food and service for a decent restaurant, especially one in this price class First, the good things about the restaurant: The beautiful views of the ocean, the polite restaurant host, the fact they had a helpful sommelier, and the bar/lounge with live music. We came to Pacific Edge for our 10th wedding anniversary. The restaurant host knew this and was accommodating and friendly in taking us to our window table. However, when our waiter showed up (there seemed to be two which was rather confusing) he didn't really greet us but simply asked "Do you know what you want yet?" ("Good evening", some pleasantries, even simple Happy Anniversary would have been nice...) We asked for cocktail menus as we wanted to have a pre-dinner drink while watching the sunset. We then had to wait 5-10 minutes for the cocktail menu and then another 10 minutes to get the drinks. The dinner menu was a disappointment in itself. We were hoping to see something more imaginative or "gourmet" for the $40-50 per entree price range. The options were pretty well dime-a -ozen, essentially all items you would find in any run of the mill "better" restaurant across the country. Given the menu was rather boring, we tried asking the waiter for recommendations. He had little to say about food but appeared to simply recommend the most expensive of the options. Once we ordered our appetizers they arrived almost immediately which made me think they were not made to order. The glasses of wines we'd consulted the sommelier on also showed up at the same time as the appetizers. However, the bread and the butter, customarily served before the appetizers, showed up only after the appetizers had been brought out. Since we hadn't had time to finish our pre-dinner drinks before the appetizers and the wine arrived, we asked the waiters to slow the food down a bit. This was a mistake as we then had to then wait about 30 minutes to get our entrees. When the entrees arrived my seared tuna was completely cold, it seemed it may have been cooked hours ahead of time (from a fridge even?) and even my husband's lamb was only lukewarm. We told the waiter about this and they took the food away for quite some time to reheat. In general, service was very slow all evening. We decided thought we'd salvage the evening by having the dessert in the lounge where a pianist and bongo drummer were playing fun jazz tunes. But unfortunately even this part of the meal was a bust: the dessert was some sort peanut butter chocolate bar. The problem with it was that the bottom "pie shell" type of crust was so hard we had a hard time cutting into it with our fork! You shouldn't need a stake knife to eat your dessert!) Overall I can not recommend this restaurant for others given the mismatch in quality vs cost. read more

I have been eating here for the past seven years and also stay at the hotel whenever I am in the area. I have had, lunch, brunch, and dinner here (probably thirty times) and the food and service is always consistent. You really have to eat here to appreciate the food, view, and atmosphere. Every appetizer, entree they have served me has been excellent. The wine list is also excellent; save room for dessert. Great place a date, special occassion, or just anytime if you are in this area. If I lived in Carmel this would be on the top of my list. read more

Only one word can describe California Market and that is "AMAZING". From the food to the service, to the outstanding view you have absolutely nothing to complain about. Every time I get a chance to visit Monterey I make it my priority to have lunch here. The menu is fairly priced and the plates are pretty big. I urge you to go here and try their food. Although the dining room is small and you can hear all the conversations around you, the food is good. I had the soup du jour which was a delicious artichoke bisque and the Cobb salad. The salad portion was generous and I requested a smaller portion but was told that was not possible. It seems like that may be an option for dinner but not at lunch. The ingredients were fresh. I wanted to show Rob the spectacular setting of the Highland's Inn. We were staying in Monterey, but after we checked out of our hotel, we were hungry and decided to go the Highlands Inn for breakfast. I just assumed that the Pacific's Edge would be serving brunch, but I assumed wrong. So we ate at the Calif. Market Restaurant - in a huge caloric splurge, we both had eggs benedict. Maybe it's because it's been years since I've had it, but it was good. Very good. Service was friendly but not attentive. The place was not busy and there were plenty of servers walking around - unfortunately, they were not walking in the vicinity of any customers. We were thirsty and wanted water, but it was never offered. So I guess this should be a 3 1/2 star review; 4 for the food, 2 for the service. read more

Went there with my wife and three year-old daughter, and when we walked in the door the first thing out of their mouthes was, "Are you looking for fine dining?" From there, we had better service from the bread and water servers than our actual server/waiter. I paid over $200 for a meal that was alright at best and service that was worse than I could have gotten from a chain restaurant. I recommend Mission Ranch Inn, Whaling Station or Chart House over this place any day of the week, I would even rather go to Henry's BBQ or Cannery Row Brewing Company! Very disappointed. read more

The food wasn't bad and the view was incredible, but the service was horrible. The first thing our waiter said was "what do you want to eat?" He didn't go over the menu, make any suggestions, or anything that an experienced waiter would do. After our meal we had to ask to see a dessert menu, and after waiting 10 minutes for him to come take our order we decided to leave without dessert. If you decide to go here and you get Fredrick as your waiter ask for someone else. The other waiters we overheard at nearby tables were great. Also, the waiters assistant was phenomenal. One of a handful of restaurants in California with the quintessential ocean view and excellent food combination. Even on a cloudy day, it was a view to kill for. But, it really is about the food, and we were not disappointed. The scallop, the short rib, the steak entrees were all excellent. The creme brûlée and chocolate cake deserts were exquisite. The only complaint was the service. Our waiter was more interested in talking to a neighboring table about his ability to play Pebble Beach at good rates. Was here last night. Came here to catch dinner at sunset. The view and service is pretty much the only thing we enjoyed this evening. We've been to quite a few high end restaurants (not many reviewed, 'cause I get lazy). I tend to only write a review if I'm compelled to do so because it was THAT good or THAT bad. And this is one of them. The service was attentive. The ambiance and view was great (as long as it's not pitch black yet). Google the time for sunset and book a reservation 30 minutes before that time. The 2 stars is because of the Food = boring, uninspired. When you're charging this much for food, you BETTER deliver...this place did not. I would only come back to this place for a drink and the view, NEVER for the food. A couple notes for the chef in case you read this (This only applies to our experience last night). -The heirloom tomato dish: the burrata was old and gross, why would you serve something like that?, basil oil needs seasoning, & the balsamic reduction was burnt (this dish sucked). -The Free Range chicken was cooked perfectly, but the poorly roasted head of garlic was inedible. -The Mushroom Ravioli was greasy and bland. The taste did not equate to it's cost. We nearly ordered the meat entrees, but my fiancée warned me that this place was unlikely to rival the quality/taste of the steaks at Peppoli at Pebble Beach for nearly the same price. I'm glad I listened to her. Come here for the view and service, but don't come for the food. read more

Amazing food and normally great service. 2 of 4 times I have been here I have got served by Frederick. A long time server who has no personality and is only here cause they are a union property I would imagine..He doesn't tell u about the specials unless u ask. And he doesn't tell u about the sides w entrees unless u ask. He will tell u about his restaurant he owns on the side. The 2 other times I have been here the service is on point and the food is always delicious. I would recommend not having Frederick as your server and your experience will be 5 of 5. Great views and great food. The managers are also super helpful and nice. I will be back but will def ask for Frederick not to be my server so I can have a great experience! read more

Hostess never smiled, barely said a word, and gave us the sense that we were not welcome. Our server barely spoke to us, and never mentioned the soup of the day until we asked what it was. The other servers around us seemed pretty friendly and helpful though. The food was pretty good - no complaints. I got the Halibut sandwich and my wife got the Seared Ahi Salad. This review is only for the Sunset Lounge, not the sit-down restaurant. We've gone twice now, and both times spent a nice long relaxing evening enjoying the views and the ambiance of the place. Service both times was very warm and friendly, and the seats in the lounge are very comfortable. It's a nice non-pretentious vibe. The first time we went the food was all great. This most recent time we were let down somewhat. The caesar salad was just OK, could've used more garlic, more anchovies, more dressing. The free range chicken was blah, and a bit overcooked. The clams were excellent, but we wish there were more of them! The sliders and fries were very good. The couple sharing the table with us ordered steak frites - we think that's what we'll go for next time. It looked very good and cooked medium rare just like they ordered. Last year when we went we got the peanut butter mousse cake and it was excellent. They've got some good and interesting mixed drinks on their list, good wines to choose from byt he glass, and a nice selection of Scotch, ports and dessert wines. Since we stayed for a few hours both times we visited, we took advantage of the bar! This is a place we'll return to on all of our visits to Carmel. I don't know that we'd spring for the restaurant since the lounge menu is not consistent, but the lounge works very well for us! We've got very happy memories from both visits. read more

We walked up and were ignored by the hostess until she said "and you are?" She then said it would be a wait and to have a seat at the bar. We headed there and came to our senses to ask how long we would have to wait after our reservation time. "At least 30 minutes" she said and turned around. No sorry, nothing from her. Needless to say we left and went to a lovely restaurant in Carmel by the Sea where we were greeted with a smile. Loved our stay at the resort. The restaurant left us disappointed in our Hyatt customer service experience. Luckily the rest of the place makes up for it. read more

i would recommend eating somewhere in downtown carmel if you're staying at the hyatt, or utilize the kitchen in your room rather than come here. the view is amazing, and you'll definitely spot a whale or two if it's clear out, but the food, eh. you'll definitely be paying for the view and the "local produce, food" bit, but other than that you won't taste it. also, any meat that can be raw, order a stage up from what you'd usually get (i.e. if you typically want a meat medium rare, order medium) as it may come out undercooked. pretty sure my immune system helped me not get sick today as my stomach felt off when we left, but i had highway one to travel and no stomach of mine was going to stop me. we did see the reviews going into our brunch, but we wanted to experience it for ourselves just to be sure everyone else didn't just have bad luck/timing. again, enjoy the hotel, just be sure to have a food alternative. read more

If you are going to splurge, this is the place to do it! The food was excellent, the service was great, and the view was amazing! They do not have many vegetarian options, but I was impressed with what I ordered. The food is creative, but not overboard, and a delight to the palette. The sommelier was very knowledgeable and interesting to talk with. Be aware if you bring your own wine, they charge a ridiculous $35 corkage fee. They do offer an impressive wine menu of their own, including a nice selection of dessert wines. read more

We had a horrible experience at this restaurant last night. We were seated at 7:45 PM, we ordered by 8:00 PM, received our appetizer (dozen very small Oysters on the half shell for $32.00) and then there was no dinner. At 9:05 our waiter stopped by our table to say that the dinner will be there shortly. We complained about how long it has been. He came back a couple of minutes later and said the meal would be on the house and we should get it shortly. Of course we did not get it and as we were leaving the table at 9:25 (frustrated) the dinner showed up. I ordered a $65 Ribeye steak which you can not mess up. Of course, the cook could not get it right and it tasted like shoe leather. I had ordered it Medium Rare and it wasn't. Based on this experience, we would highly not recommend this restaurant.
