I sat out side on their very large open patio facing West. I would return just for the view. WOW. A perfect perch in the shade sitting at wooden tables overlooking the Pacific Ocean, protected by thick glass railings, I ordered their Crab Benedict. It was OK but not mind-blowing. Decided to try this place a few weeks ago when staying Carmel. While the view was gorgeous and I can't complain about the food, the service was, unfortunately, awful. We waited an hour between the appetizer and our entree, without any apologies or checking in from our server (bad server). This was also a place where I tried the trick of putting my empty water glass on the corner of the table to possibly catch the eye of the many servers who kept passing by, but eventually had to flag one down to ask - several times. Two stars instead of one, because of one redeeming act at the end of the meal, when our server noticed I had my coat on because the temperature in the restaurant had dropped considerably and he comped us the corkage fee. read more

We went there for Fathers Day on 6/15/14. I'll have to say I was disappointed in this place. First our whole party thought the Hostess (blond girl) was very rude and not friendly at all. It was a cold foggy morning and she seated us outside and when we asked about the overhead heater she just turned and walk away. Also, when we left after breakfast we walked by her station and she looked at us and didn't say a word. Rude! The service was very slow. When the food did arrive I had to wait 5 mins for them to bring my toast. Naturally to say my food was cold due to sitting outside. The ham with my eggs was what I consider sandwich lunch meat grade. Had lunch here today, very good the staff is very nice and professional, the food is great and the view is amazing! one thing that really got my attention was that when the server brought our bread service rather than just setting the basket with the bread on the table and leaving he had a pair of tongs and carried the basket around setting a roll on each of our bread plates very classy! My only complaint is that I had ordered my sandwich with no tomato and it arrived with tomato I mentioned this to the server and he was very apologetic and quickly corrected the problem, accidents happen! We celebrated my husband's birthday at the Pacific Edge with our 7-month old son and we had a wonderful time. David's service (our server for the night) was excellent. Food was delicious and fresh. We had tuna tartare and clam chowder for appetizers; hubby loved his Kansas steak and I enjoyed my rib chop. We are definitely going back to this restaurant. read more

We stayed at the Hyatt at Carmel Highlands. We ate several times at the California Market. The view is spectacular, the menu for every meal was full of variety and the people are so friendly. Hostesses, Elizabeth and Dianna are very welcoming, and servers Tony and Jonathan were friendly with great service. The worst meal I've ever had. My wife, her cousin and I had the recommended Spot Prawns. There wasn't two once's of meet in all three orders combined. The waiter could not have cared less! He commented that he and other waiter just sucked the juice out. The meet that was in there was slimy. The manager just blamed it on the supplier. I invited him to join us and I would buy him a plate to sample...he declined the offer. They tried to make it up by sending out a "Happy Birthday" dessert even though non of us were celebrating a birthday!!?? They gave us an "employee discount" on the meal instead of apologizing and taking the meal off the check. The food was horrible, the service poor and the management was useless. My wife and I had been to this restaurant many times before, but now will never return. I give this a one star because this site does not have a negative star rating!! read more

Ok, the views are spectacular. And the wine list is extensive. So, you just have to accept the big mark up as the price of admission. A bottle of red that knocks you back 40 bucks at the store will be a bit over 100 here. My rule of thumb is double retail is fair for all, when it starts approaching triple retail, I feel like I'm getting squeezed. But you got the view. The food is solid, if unspectacular. Ceviche, polenta, filet, all good. Grilled asparagus was a little underdone. The cocktails were interesting. The staff was professional, and friendly. First off the view here is worth a star in itself if you have a table by the window. We have been coming to the Highlands Inn for 23 years but this is the first time we had Easter Brunch at the restaurant. I understand they have a new chef but I think that fact comes into play more when you have dinner. A 79.95 buffet brunch is a whole different ballgame. The choices on the buffet were bountiful without going overboard like some of the best places in Vegas. Was it the best prime rib from a buffet? No but it was very good. The omelet station could have had more choices to pick from however. My only real complaint would be the service. We had a heavy set fellow waiting on us and his initial greeting was " what can I get you to drink?". How about "welcome to Pacific's Edge, glad you decided to join us for Easter brunch". OK, so I knew which champagne we wanted and it seemed to irritate the sommelier. Maybe because I didn't let him try to up sell us. All I know is he made me feel unimportant.The worst part is he didn't even make an attempt to keep our glasses filled. And for whatever reason we didn't have a table side ice bucket. Sooooo... our server refilled our glasses. And here's the worst part. If you are a server here and you don't know how to pour champagne without dripping water into the diner's plate.....well, you can draw your own conclusions. My wife and I have been there twice. First time we asked the waitress to recommend HER favorite dish - and she tells us the fish tacos. I have now had them 2X and they are a 9 out of 10. I really wanted to give this place a good rating. Their location and the view alone, are completely 5 stars. Seated on the patio, the view of the Pacific is absolutely breathtaking. Having said that, let me tell you why I'm giving it 2 stars. The menu at this restaurant, during the day on a Sunday is nothing short of tragic. Ahi salad, cobb salad, turkey sandwich, clam chowder, a club sandwich, fish tacos. Basically anything you can imagine on the most generic lunch menu EVER- is what they offer. And it won't blow you away even when you try it. We started with the crab and lobster roll. Considering we're sitting next to the ocean I was not expecting deep fried egg rolls filled with shredded crab and lobster. Maybe I was aiming to high but when you put "crab and lobster roll" on a menu that really doesn't offer Asia cuisine, the patron assumes it's going to be a classic roll, not something deep fried. We didn't even finish it between the 3 of us. I ordered the artichoke soup (soup du jour) and a salad. The soup was like drinking water, it was so runny. The side salad was served in a bowl so big that literally it would not fit on the table, due to the fact it's so ridiculously huge. Completely unnecessary and really, the bowls aren't even pretty. Oversized glass bowls with a near 4-inch rim/lip??? If you're putting 3 people at a 2 top is not thinking at all about the dining experience. Take into account it was an 80 degree day and they put us at the only table in the sun with no umbrella. When a table in front of us (beneath an umbrella finished) we asked to move up because the heat. They acted like we tried to deliver a baby using the utensils. If you didn't want us to move, then say no, but don't make us feel like we're asking you some huge favor. The service was slow. We had to remind the server about our drinks more than once and she looked so disinterested in her job, I practically would've run my own dishes to the table. Totally disappointed and will not be coming back to dine at this cafe. I hear the upstairs dining room is nice and given the view, I may give it a shot in the future. We'll see... read more

This place had the most stunningly beautiful views, perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific with massive floor-to-ceiling windows that made the view the star of the show. I hafta say that the meal we had was secondary as compared to the gorgeous view. Don't get me wrong, because the service and the meal were top-rate, but we went to Passionfish in Pacific Grove the night which knocked our socks off. This restaurant is located in the Hyatt in Carmel. The view from here is beautiful! There is both indoor and outdoor seating, although the patio is not too large so it might be hard to sit outside. We originally sat at a table on the patio, but not all the tables are umbrella-covered so it got way too hot before we even had the chance to order. The staff was accommodating and moved us to a table indoors, where we still had a nice view. The crab and lobster spring rolls were okay but tasted like normal spring rolls you can get from the frozen section. They were also heavily fried and I couldn't really taste the crab or lobster. For my entree, I had the fish tacos, which were pretty good. I think there were two types of fish- it tasted like salmon and cod. Everything was pretty overpriced, but you are also paying for the view and the atmosphere! read more

The hostess refused to seat us in the main dining area stating that it was closed for cleaning and preparation for the dinner crowd. We were not happy being told that we couldn't have the view but accepted the alternative seating anyway. We were astonished when the AA hostess seated a Caucasian couple in the area that she had told us 20 mins before that was supposed to be closed!! She said I'm making an exception for you!! The gall of her! We will not be visiting this establishment ever again! The server was good and we appreciated her service. We saw our server when he took our order, brought my wine and brought our check. When we informed him that our soft shell crab was too greasy and cold, he gave us attitude. The view is spectacular. The sunset was beautiful and even at night, the lit trees and water look amazing. The service was so so. The waitress was a little clumsy and she didn't really have anything insightful to say about the menu except repeating every item one by one and saying how great it was. The wine was great! Good selection and the bottle of cab we had was fabulous. I had the sea scallops for my appetizer which were nicely prepared and huge. For my entree, I had the salmon. We were right behind Amanda in line to check-in for our reservation at Pacific's Edge. She was abusive and demanding -- noting that she is a top level reviewer for Yelp and basically saying that if she didn't get an ocean front table IMMEDIATELY she would give a one star review instead of a five-star review. Part of what I hate about YELP....we had to wait a while for our table -- but management was quite accommodating and I suspect that if Amanda had shown up on time for her reservation we would not have needed to wait. As for the food and the service -- we have been eating here for years and thought the current food and service FABULOUS! The menu was creative and the vegetarian option was REALLY TOPS. The location and view is unmatched. The wine list is very good and has incredible bargains at the high end...(DRC for less than you could buy at retail). This place is wonderful. My favorite thing use to be their amazing crab cakes. This past weekend visiting the crab cakes were different, still good. I asked about it and the recipe is still the same they just have made 2 crab cakes instead of 1. I liked the one crab cake it seemed less fried and more chunks of crab. As locals, we will not be coming back here anytime soon for dinner. We were there a few weeks ago with my sister from Boston who was anxious to eat here. The view, of course, is spectacular, but the high prices we paid for a very average dinner is just not worth it. Have a glass of wine in the lounge area and eat off that menu rather than spending a small fortune to eat in the dining room. We were seated at a very poor table and I had to ask for us to be moved (we were there quite early 6pm so there were other tables available). Our server, though, was wonderful. The view is definitely awesome: we had our reservation at 6:15 and requested a table near the window, so we saw the sun slowly set during our entire meal. However, the food was unimpressive - I didn't really appreciate the French influence in the food. Was it tasty and did I clean off my plate? Incredible view, cool ambiance, nice architecture, fabulous food, impeccable service - this place has it all. The floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rugged grandeur of the Pacific is dazzling, and they also did something cool with the lighting so the outside has a subtle glow. Was quite a visual spectacle when it was pouring rain as well; made the whole place feel very cozy. Also liked the split levels, and the dim lighting - both gave the place a seductive, intimate feel. On to the food... everything i put in my mouth was perfect and delicious. I was part of an 11-person party, which made it all even more impressive. From the fresh from the oven rosemary bread (a server walks around offering 3 kinds: sourdough, cinnamon walnut, or rosemary) to the wine the chef suggested for us to the sea bass with trumpet royales to the bites of several kinds of desserts and everything in between (chef also brought us all little mini pumpkin soup and the most exquisite bit of lobster in a creamy corn risotto, perfectly presented salads - every dish they brought was gorgeous. the sea bass was perfectly done - creamy white flesh, crispy skin on top. food nirvana. service was impeccable, too - perfect delivery without ever being obtrusive. We had lunch here and enjoyed the phenomenal view. Actually saw a few whale spouts. Perfect place to spend a sunny hour staring out at the ocean. Unfortunately, my meatball sandwich was just so-so. The server made a big deal out of telling me how their meatballs are made with filet mignon. Well, having tasted it - I would rather have had "normal" meatballs - or normal filet mignon.
