But the quality of the fish makes all the difference. it was good quality, very fresh. As other reviewers have said, you could easily miss this place. It is in a drab shopping center, with an inconspicuous sign. If you didn't know this was here, you'd probably drive right on by. And the interior isn't much to look at either. But if you want fish and chips, this is some of the best you will find on the island. I debated my rating on this one. I decided to go to 5 stars because it's not a gourmet fish place. You aren't going to get anything super fancy, or a flambe, or anything of the sort. It's fish and chips (and crab cakes, and a few other things we didn't try). BEST fish taco I've ever had in my life. I have been coming here for years and dream about it every year between visits. Best fried fish I've ever had in my life - I literally cannot eat fried fish - I always get a sick tummy after because it's too greasy and the grease doesn't agree with me. Not this place, they have some machine I've never seen, and the fish is extra thinly and crisply, panko breaded to a perfect light golden, and freaking delicious. Like I might cry because I had it today, and who knows when I'll get to return. Added bonus things I've seen here while visiting: 1.) a truck that pulled into the gas station for gas - mattress in truck bed, bikini-clad girls and hula hoops atop. 2.) a silky chicken on a bicycle ( years later I saw my 2nd chicken on the handle bars of a bike, in Venice Beach California (of course). With the new addition of some great Mexican restaurants locally, they should source some Pico de gallo and homemade tortillas. Tell them I said so. Momma and i shared a 5 piece Mahi-Mahi fish and chips. The fish is very generous in its portion size, not oily and fresh. The breading complemented the fish and the tarter sauce only heightened the experience. The waffle fries were pretty good, but were overshadowed by the quality if the fish. This fish, due to the lack of oil, could be taken somewhere else to eat with minimal degradation of enjoyment. (That is one of my litmus tests of fish and chips-can they make it home?) There are a few outside tables, but I don't think you come to Hawaii to take in the grungy parking lot while you are enjoying this meal. Don't let the decor of the store dissuade you. All the cooking/preparation areas were top notch in cleanliness. Staff was pleasant to deal with. Only got Sharon's name, but I would suggest you make this a stop in your travels. Located in the middle of a shopping center, it'd be easy to walk pass the inconspicuous fish market. Mahalo to my fellow Yelper's rave reviews of this local favorite which led me to their door last night. Whilst the interior decor leaves something to be desired, the food, makes up for it. Two people worked in a small corner of the shop. Next to the register is a black board with the fresh catches of the day, you choose one of those for your fish and chips. Next to that is a whiteboard with the main menu and sides. Yesterday Ono, Mahi, and salmon were the catches of the day. I opted for a 3 piece Ono. Two sides come with the plate, I got tartar and blue cheese ranch, this lady loves her dipping sauces. The gentleman greeted me (kudos for the face shield) and said they were busy but to come back In five minutes. I gave him my order and meandered outside. I wasn't sure if he meant that my food would be ready but over the next five minutes at least 3 folks walked in a grabbed their take out (most locals call their orders in ahead of time). I arrived 5 minutes to the second after placing my order and the gentleman turns around and says, "Take out for Lauryn!" I was impressed, they run efficiently and quote accurate times, a good omen for meal ahead. The tantalizing scents on the drive home were almost too tempting. Surprisingly generous portions of thick chunks of fish sat atop crunchily soft waffle fries. The Ono was caught earlier in the day and was cooked to perfection (check out the pictures to see the lovely moist flake of the fish). The batter was nice and thin, crunchy, and perfectly salted. The fish was delicate, yet firm, and slightly sweet. Despite getting the smallest order (the 3-piece) I was given 4; there was so much I couldn't finish it. The day my friends and I went, there were 4 available fishes: mahi-mahi, cod, ono, and salmon. The worker allowed me to choose two different fishes. So I chose mahi-mahi and salmon. The plates smelled really oily when we got into our car with our orders. But when we began eating, the food was surprisingly not too oily! Every bite had a loud crunch even after sitting in the box for a while. Wow! The fish itself was really bland with no seasoning but the tartar sauce and the blue cheese sauce (took it from friend who ordered their fried chicken; doesn't come with it but I believe you can ask!) flavored the fish better. I also felt the fish was a bit overcooked but that can't be helped since it's deep fried. The shrimp also had a nice loud crunch that came with cocktail sauce. Cooked perfectly! This place is tucked away in a strip mall at the entrance to Pahoa town. It looks like a convenience store from the outside. There is plenty of parking in front but very little seating. You have a choice of the type of fish you want. When we were there our choice was ahi, mahi, ono, or cod. We chose ono and got the large plate, which had 5 HUGE pieces of fish, waffle fries, and coleslaw. There was a line but they got orders in quick and it took about 15 minutes for our order to come out. The fish was cooked to perfection! Very nicely battered but not too much, just the rice amount of batter. The batter stuck to the fish, which we like. The fish pieces are HUGE! We shared a plate and still didn't finish. The waffle fries is the perfect combination with the fish. The coleslaw is on the vinegary side and not my fave, but if you like vinegar you would appreciate it. I wasn't a fan of the tartar sauce and felt it was just plain ole tartar. For fish done this well, a garlic aioli tartar would compliment it very well! We will definitely go back.
