My friend wanted to go here for her birthday on Saturday and I'm glad we did. Since watching Culinary Class Wars and finding out one of the chefs (Paik) had a restaurant (chain) here-- it's been on our list. It's opposite of Sakura Chaya on First and Nees, same lot as McDonald's. We ordered the Japchae (of course)-- one of my favorite Korean dishes. So simple, yet so good! We got a half order (5pcs) of the Garlic Soy Wings + half order of the Sweet & Spicy Wings, the Chili Shrimp, the Sweet & Sour Pork, and a bowl of rice (x2). This was more than enough food for us (3). They gave pickled radishes on the side and I also asked for a side of spicy sauce (chili oil and garlic-- fire). We all preferred the "Spicy" Wings over the Garlic Soy-- the flavor was just better but they were both good options. We all loved the Japchae, duh. The Chili Shrimp was really good and flavorful-- and we were pleasantly surprised by the quantity as well as quality. Our least favorite, sorry to say, was the Sweet & Sour Pork. It wasn't bad, just not our favorite. I did opt for dipping it into the spicy sauce rather than the Sweet & Sour sauce though. We also probably would've been okay with just one bowl of rice as well, since we had the Japchae. We're in 100°+ weather so we were not in the mood for soup lol so we'll have to come back and try out some of the soups another time-- as well as their stir fry dishes. Service was quick. You order and pay up front. The girl who helped us was nice, and helpful. They even give you a dish for free (if it's your bday)! Pretty cool of them to do. All of our bellies hurt after eating here. And the only time our family all eats the same thing is when picking food up from a restaurant (an infrequent endeavor, mind you.) The customer service was good and the fellow working the cashier was very kind. He answered our first timer questions and made multiple suggestions. The fried rice was really lacking flavor and I turned it up some at home with some Livia's, soy sauce/oyster sauce, Asian sugar, mirin, and 2 more eggs. You may consider having your chili peppers on the side, so you could add them as you go, rather than totally mixing them together. WATCH THOSE NOODLES! They have a habit of flipping around your bowl and spitting out sauce on your shirt! I speak as one with experience! LOL! The staff was 'over the top' outstanding! Friendly, checking several times if we needed anything, genuinely helpful! Five stars for staff! This is a 'niche market' that is set up more for TAKE OUT, rather than dining in. And we saw LOTS of takeout orders! There is a tiny water station, with even tinier water cups. . . am I at the Dentist office? NOT a convenient situation if you like a lot of HEAT in your food! As someone who binged Culinary Class Wars, I was so hyped to see that we had a Paik's Noodles here in Fresno! The place is super casual with a simple interior! You order and pick up your food at the counter. THE FOOD: 〰 Jajang Rice (4/5): Super comforting! Service: it's mostly self-serve. Orders on counter are bused back to table by the customer, enabling them to reduce headcount and focus on food prep. Had three orders take just 10.5 minutes on 5 pm on a Saturday: pretty fast right? The chef goes from table to table asking customers about the quality of the service and food, although I missed him when I was filling my water cup. Ambiance: relaxed and friendly. So new that some of the promotional posters haven't completely unrolled yet and still have their creases (not a bad thing). Floors unfinished, so that kind of vibe. Food: a bit more complicated. Other reviews I saw complained about portions and meat. I ordered noodle beef jjampong and I think only got six pieces of meat for 14.45 (compare with the sliced radishes for scale, you'll see them when you walk in the door). Others in my group got the spicy jjampong and the meat Jajangmyeon, perhaps try those instead. I might come back later when I can evaluate this experience more objectively. Didn't know the made culinary wars into a restaurant... I didn't expect to see Mr Paik seeing at the front. After taking a quick photo with the celebrity, I was greeted with many amazing food options and Asian drinks ranging from the sweet ones we got to the alcoholic ones I wished I could try (had work the next day). Much like the one I tried in LA, the jajangmyeon was great and the japchae was a much needed refreshing taste. However, I've finally tried the Jjampong (had a whole bowl to myself after the sample) and man was it one of my favorite seafood soups I've had. Definitely a good amount of food for the lunch combo and such a great deal! Add a bit of vinegar to your noodles and it's soooo tasty! The sweet and sour chicken was more fried batter than chicken and slightly on the over fried side but still good nonetheless with the sauce that helps soften it up. I don't really have anything bad to say about this place. The food is very average and good. Portions are average as well so you're not getting a whole bunch when it comes to the noodle dishes. We got the chili shrimp which came at a very decent portion for $20. Shrimps were jumbo sized and pretty big. I'm not the biggest fan of the sauce only because the garlic has an artificial taste to it but overall it's still good. Don't be fooled by the name it's not spicy at all. lol! I believe the name "chili" refers to like the sweet chili sauce for eggrolls. The fried dumplings were normal fried dumplings. I believe it was pork filled with cabbage/veggies if I'm correct. Nice crunch to it I personally liked to dip the fried dumpling in the Jajangmyeon sauce!!! Jajangmyeon is a little bit on the sweeter side, but I don't mind that I actually thought it went well with the pieces of pork on top. They're very generous with the sauce so if you love to eat foods that are super saucy, then this noodle dish is for you. I'm not too sure if it's just me, but I feel as if these noodles were a little bit bigger than what I'm used to, I don't have any problems with it but only that I couldn't finish my plate because it was so much hahah!!! The jjamppong definitely had a kick to it so if you're not used to eating mildly spicy stuff, then this noodle soup is probably not for you. It's not spicy in a sense where you have to drink tons and tons of water to reduce the heat, it's more of an aromatic spice that hits at the back of your throat. A good cough or two after every bite is what happened to me haha The noodle dishes do come with complementary yellow radish, which I thought added a nice touch. If there are any complaints, it is that there is no water jar and dispenser like all other locations I have been to in Southern California. You can purchase bottled water, along with soda and soju. The one thing that lowers my rating is the fact that it does not mention anywhere on the menu that their japchae and soup comes with seafood. This could be a huge downfall for this spot if someone with a seafood allergy stumbles upon this issue. It comes with rice, fried omelette with shrimp and also Jajang sauce . It also includes a small bowl of Jjampong soup. Third dish was Spicy Chicken plate. Basically deep fried chicken in their spicy and sour sauce. All of the food we ordered was plenty for a party of two. They are generous on their portion. We definitely had left overs that we'll eat for the following day. We will definitely make this another stop for us to come back and try again from other dishes from their menu. This is a cute little restaurant that definitely helps bridge the gap in diversity in the Central Valley. I was excited to try the food because it is associated with chef Paik Jong-Won. I ordered the jjajangmyeon and it was just ok. Not great, not bad, just ok. I think the staff may still need more training to adequately make food to Chef Won's expectations. The noodles were overcooked and not as chewy as they should be, and the sauce was a bit runny so it didn't cling to the noodles as well as I would have preferred. My friend had the jjamppong, which she thought was very average as well. We have both tried food from their sister locations throughout Cali and in Seoul. The real highlight was the Black Bean Noodles (Jjajangmyeon) with extra meat. The noodles were springy and chewy in the best way, and the black bean sauce was rich with umami and depth. We were scraping the bowl on this one. My son loved the Vegetable Stir-Fried Noodles, which used the same great springy noodles and had tons of flavor. We were impressed with how much taste they packed in for a simple veggie dish. One small letdown: the meat options were limited to pork, chicken, and shrimp. This place offers Korean style Chinese food. It is the closest thing to what I ate in the winter time living abroad in South Korea. The spicy jjambong would warm us up on a cold day. The service is fast, and the ambiance is perfect. I recall that in Korea, we would always get jajangmyeon, tang siu yook, and jjambong as a set. Highly recommend 10/10. read more

I want to update my previous review. I was very disappointed during my last visit -- the food wasn't great, and the overall experience let me down. But they've really changed. The flavors and service now feel much more authentically Korean. I'm glad to see how much the restaurant has improved. I think I'll be coming here often from now on. Updated on 6/28 read more

10/09/24 Hot & New! Must try! They do not have A lot of food options yet. No chicken or tofu. I asked the worker what would be best that didn't have pork and she recommended the Beef Jjampppong. Definitely, different foods. Something to try. Ordered what was recommended. Paid for it and waited for it to be ready #5. Small inside, but clean and music iplaying. Plenty of seating. A bit of a wait, but they were busy. Order called a little later and handed over with a smile. =) Lunchtime! It was hot and ready to put together and have. I was already disappointed that they only have beef and pork and now, more. The beef is very much overcooked! Lots of chewing. The noodles were good. A couple things in it were questionable. I tried and not really good, but that's me. Fresh carrots & lettuce in it. Very plain too. Definitely needs seasoning on the beef or something to make it flavorful. There is a lot in one order. Plenty of leftovers. At least the noodles & service were good. I definitely need to go back even they have more options. A lot on the menu said, "Coming Soon!" The only food that was good was the wings, don't tip because you'll end up doing all your own clean up.

I got the jajangmyeon the first time I came, and was really impressed, it was very flavorful. The second time, I got the sweet and sour chicken since I was craving something more meaty. It was so juicy, and the sauce was on the side, which I liked, so it wouldn't lose its crunch. My partner was interested in seeing what elements of the food had Chinese fusion. But he said it was more Korean-heavy, which he didn't mind. But everything is such a good price for a hot meal. This will be one of our go-to spots. Having just opened I'm willing to cut them some slack. The food was mediocre at best. I was the only customer there when I went. Prices are comparable to most any other fast food restaurant. I'm not a big fan of ordering at the counter, but that's just me. Being a neighbor I wish them well. read more
