One of the best restaurants in town. I have not had an opportunity as of yet to eat at the downtown location, only the original location. Today I had the amazing tuna sandwich with a simply dressed salad. A perfect lunch. The tuna is beautifully poached (I believe) and dressed with a light sauce and greens. Stopped by this place with my wife for the first time. We were delighted with the tasty small plates they had (the shrimp was particularly outstanding). The outdoor patio is small but has great ambiance and I imagine at night, with the lights that were strung under the tree that is the centerpiece of the dining area, it must be magical. We found the service excellent and although the wine list is not extensive (3 glasses of red to choose from), the prices were very reasonable. It's six minutes from the airport, so it could be a great choice before heading out somewhere (or for a bite right off the plane before you begin your vacation). More expensive than anticipated, again not an issue, but certainly the price will vary on their offerings and your selections. The buffalo mozz a d arugula Tapa was $20 made for 2, more than both entrees, but a huge portion. Small menu. Mostly meat and some seafood focus. As a pescetarian was still plenty satisfied. We had one of their flat bread sandwiches, which was super tasty...flat bread was so fresh... The meat inside was tasty and tender. We also had mussels, which were served in an awesome sauce. We tried their meat and cheese plate with their homemade bread ... Awesome! They even hooked us up with free cannoli for a birthday (and the cannoli.....oh em gee.... wonderful). I had been wanting to come here for a while since I drive every day on this street on my way to and from work. I stopped by on a Tuesday at noon for a quick lunch break with my coworkers. Unfortunately several items were sold out. I ordered the Navarro bowl which has 5 roasted grains, roasted veggies, beans, etc. I added shrimp which was $15 extra. Although both the bowl and the shrimp were very tasty I though the price was too much. The bowl by itself is $10 but if you only have that I guarantee you will be hungry since it was a relatively small portion. The shrimp were seasoned really well however I got 3 small shrimps and that amounts to $5 for each shrimp which I consider a lot. All of this was served on disposable containers and a plastic fork so you can understand why I was not happy about paying over $30 with tax and tip for this meal. If prices were more reasonable I would consider coming back since the flavors were good but otherwise I don't recommend. read more

Now housed in newly renovated bungalo with indoor and outdoor seating and lots of character, Chef Claudio is back and Pa'La will not disappoint... you can tell he put his heart and soul into the project and continues to do so with his locally sourced menu that changes daily. On a recent Thursday date night, my husband and I popped in and ordered a variety of tapas and plates to share. We sat at the community table and ended up making a new friend (hello Tony if you happen to read this). We enjoyed not only the food but the casual, warm atmosphere and conversation with both Chef Claudio and Jason Dickmeyer, who are both super knowledgeable on the menu, local farming, food scene in the valley, and so much more. Standout dishes from the evening were the parmesan and mozzarella + speck tapas, the Navarro bowl topped with fresh grilled grouper, ceviche, anchovies, and of course, their schiacciata (aka Italian flatbread that made in house without white flour). All delicious! We brought our own bottle of wine -- until they get their own liquor license, it's a small $10 corking fee. Note: everything is served on recyclable paper / plastic, but the Pa'La family is committed to caring for the environment and working with local recycling companies. The oils, vinegars, produce, grains and seafood you find on the menu is all sourced from organic farmers and artisans practicing responsible agriculture and production. I look forward to many return visits to Pa'La, and hopefully ordering from the catering menu they offer as well. read more

Beautiful dinner at PA'LA - 24th Street. We booked "The Table" event that they are offering every Tuesday night at 6pm. It was just delicious! We started with a capellini soup followed by a Carpaccio that was just delicious. Then we had mussels, eel, seabeam, lamb chops and a delicious dessert. The service was outstanding! Zoan did a fantastic job explaining all the dishes as well as the wines. I will definitely come back for another Tuesday night experience. read more

Pa'La is a gem of the sea in this arid desert. The inconspicuous restaurant is a converted house along the rising 24th Street corridor. There is a comfortable patio, complete with a fire pit and foliage, that makes it a great place to be on a beautiful Arizona day. The inside of the restaurant is reminiscent of a beach cottage, complete with shells, photographs, and books. This eco-minded restaurant has compostable plates and an order-at-the-counter, fast food feel that is deceiving and beyond extraordinary. The chalkboard menu always changes, and is filled imaginative dishes that will excite the palate - always sustainably-sourced. After seeing chef Claudio's establishment on television, Mr. P and I decided to try Pa'La for lunch. There he was. Chef Claudio, larger-than-life behind the counter, directing his staff with strength, and presenting his dishes with love. He welcomed us and was genuinely happy for our patronage. We began with an appetizer of roasted wild anchovies on greens. I am not a fan of the anchovy, but these little suckers were amazing. There was a flavor and a light crunch that made the fish very tasty and appealing. The plating itself was beautiful, and the greens fresh. Words that have never before come out of my mouth: "and I fought him for the fish head." Mr. P chose the Navarro bowl, topped with blue fish. The lovely fish was consumed so quickly, that it didn't even make it into my photograph. The base bowl was comprised of an organic medley of beans, seeds, whole grains, and roasted vegetables. The natural flavors matched perfectly with each other, and gave a solid base to the flaky and perfectly seasoned fish. My selection was the roasted polenta and spicy sausage, topped with calamari and tomato. The calamari was hot, and cooked perfectly. There was no part that was at all rubbery. The flavor was spectacular, with notes of sea salt, freshly ground pepper and other spices. The spicy sausage medallions were remarkably smooth, with just enough spice to accent the mattress of crispy polenta upon which it sat. The outside of the polenta was crisp, and the inside creamy - an absolutely perfect accompaniment to the surf and turf. We would definitely visit Pa'La again in the future, to try the other amazing creations of chef Claudio and his staff. read more

Pa'la is a very small very casual restaurant with a patio. This isn't an average restaurant. The food served is of the highest quality. The House Made Bread and Seafood offered is Wood Fired. (at the time of this review Dec.2017) The menu offered is ever changing and very limited. On the day of my visit a few tapas appetizers were offered, One open faced Tuscan Style Sandwich, 2 Seafood Grain Bowls and Farro Cookies. That's was it. At Pa'la you order at the counter and sit in the very small but modern dining room or the slightly bigger comfortable Patio. All our food was served on Paper ware and our silverware was plastic. We started with a Tapas and tried the Artichokes in extra virgin olive oil ($5.00) I have to be honest an admit the portion was far smaller than I thought it would be. We received a quarter of a very small artichoke in great quality olive oil and it was sprinkled with some sort of fruity pepper. It was a nicely marinated Artichoke. We shared the Ramon Navarro Bowl (5 grains and vegetables topped with fish Bowl). I picked the Hand Harpooned Swordfish. The Grains were served like a salad (not warm). All the grains were nicely prepared and were studded with vegetables and seeds. The Swordfish was a good size portion and was flaky and mild. It was lightly seasoned and had a mild wood oven taste. Everything in the bowl was mild and very natural tasting. The bowl was suppose to be made with a Wu Wan Wo Soy Sauce. It's not a deal breaker or anything (the bowl was still GOOD) but neither of us tasted anything that resembles soy sauce in this dish. If the sauce was used it was used very sparingly. (I looked up this special soy sauce and read that it goes for $40.00 for a small bottle....that might be why it was used so sparingly) My husband mostly ate the Schiacciata (opened faced wood oven whole grain bread sandwich). The sandwich contained greens, very good quality Rosemary Ham, Manchego Cheese and Unusual Peppers. The sandwich was very good and made on very flavorful bread. Lastly we tried the Farro Cookies. I thought of them like Italian Thumbprint Cookies. The Cookie was sort of like a more flavorful shortbread and topped with very natural tasting bitter Grapefruit Jam. Really Different. Very Natural Tasting Food of the highest quality. The man working the counter was very helpful and friendly. At this time Pa'la is difficult to find because the sign isn't up yet. Husband found this little joint on Yelp and we popped in for a bite before heading to a cider festival. I ordered the Navarro bowl which might have been amazing without the beets that were in it. (You have to disclose if there are beets in something. Or if you're a cop. That's the law.) I added shrimp to my bowl and it was excellent quality with excellent preparation. But you add in the paper plates and silverware, especially when paying $25 for a grain bowl with seafood, and the counter service, it just felt odd. We ordered a pizzetta appetizer and tomato mozzarella salad, and two Navarro bowls. The appetizers were mediocre. The bowl was cold, which I thought was odd? And again, $25-27 once you add a seafood? In a paper bowl? No thanks. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating, cute location. But from the website and Yelp reviews it seemed like a cute date night place, not somewhere where you order at a counter and get served on paper plate. If I had paid half the price for the food I ordered I would have maybe been satisfied. Just missed the mark for me, personally. read more

Pa'La has two locations now. While I'm in love with the original spot and all they have to offer, I was very excited to try their new downtown location. We made a reservation and met some friends for dinner. First, it's incredibly loud. That's not a problem if it's the vibe you're looking for but I was looking to catch up with friends and it was difficult to do. Also, the place they had us it was sort of difficult to eat. It was fine if we were having drinks and appetizers but a little awkward to set our dishes on the table in front of us. The food we ordered was good but the menu is very different from their other location. I missed the opportunity to have some great vegetables. Everything was very heavy meat. In the future, I will stick with there 24th St. location. read more
