    Prime rib Friday night special

My husband and I visited Mulligan's last night and it happened to be Prime Rib Special night! Every Friday night. The restaurant was busy but the service was excellent. The prime rib was tender, tasty and cooked perfectly. The restaurant is cozy, staff is friendly and has a view of the golf course. We will definitely return.

Stopped in with my elderly mom on a quiet but semi busy Thursday night at this restaurant that's out a a ways but worth the drive. We heard from someone who knows that this cozy gem on a golf course (!) was a good bet and that you had to try the wagyu burger if you're a fan of beef. We were greeted warmly by a friendly gal who had the ease of a well-seasoned, personable restaurant manager rather than a tired overworked and overwhelmed employee on a mid-week night. She invited us to sit ourselves and we chose a booth against the wall where we could see out the windows to the green. Ah, nice. She immediately took our drink orders (they do have everything here, even bottled juices and cocktails) and swiftly returned and we were ready to order. We both got the wagyu burger and crispy onion rings with ranch and I'll tell ya what, we have had some really good burgers in our time, we are big fans, but these burgers were melt in your mouth, so flavorful and juicy, cooked to about 140, just like I ordered. In fact, a few bites into this monumental meal the chef who cooked this masterpiece came to our table personally to ensure we were enjoying our meal. He (like our attentive server) was charming and clearly appreciated that we put these burgers in our top 5 meals ever by showing us a smile from ear to ear. Ha ha That's all that I needed. We will definitely be back.

    Several bites already gone.

We came in on 1/21 during a very slow night. It was quiet, clean, decent temperature, comfortable booths. We were met by a not very friendly older waitress who told us to sit anywhere and asked for our drink orders. I asked what they had, she replied, "Everything." I asked what ciders they had, she said no ciders. Since there is absolutely NO drink menu anywhere, I went with water. My husband went a Hex, which they had on draft, and he loved. That waitress was really the only negative. A very nice blond took over after the drinks and was super nice and chatted us up a bit. I ordered the waygu burger and sweet potato fries. It was delicious. My husband had the New York with prawns, broccolini, mashed potatoes and a salad. It was all very good. Maybe the first waitress was just having a bad night and maybe they can print out a drink menu for those of us that don't know exactly what "everything" covers. That would likely boost them to a full 5 stars.

My husband and I decided to take a trip to Burney Falls and wanted a place to sit in and have lunch. We found this place on Yelp. Once we entered, Angela (I believe was her name) told us the kitchen wouldn't be serving dinner until 4:30pm and that we were more than welcome to grab a drink at the bar in the mean time. 10 minutes before dinner time she asked us what we would like so she can put the order in and have it ready by then. She was very welcoming and easy to speak to. She provided great hospitality for our first time at the restaurant. She definitely made our experience great. We tried the soup of the day and it was chicken noodle soup. I was convinced that it was from a can, boy was I wrong. The celery still had a crunch to it and was fresh! Then I ordered the cut of the day medium rare and it was seasoned well and was perfect. My husband and I didn't expect much but we were extremely satisfied and ordered food to go. We would definitely come here again.

I tried giving it a chance, but after struggling through a few bites I couldn't eat it. Jared took our order and brought out the food, but nothing really stood out during the experience. The ambiance itself wasn't too loud, although you'll definitely hear the birthday cheers if someone is celebrating. Overall the food quality just did not match the price point this visit, which was disappointing because I've had much better experiences at other Cattlemen's locations in the past. Some that had been around since as far back as the 1920's. I love the ambiance, there's no bright LED lights, and the booths have nice dim lamps give just the right amount of light. The filet is always smoky and cooked perfect, and the fried scallops are amazing! I keep wanting to try the rib eye but I like the filet so much I order it every time. The salad is nothing to write home about, just over dressed lettuce and what tastes like canned green beans. But who comes here for the salad anyway? Service here is top notch, very friendly and professional at the same time. You have to get here early on a Saturday night if you don't want to wait for a table. We got here about 4:30 and the place filled up by 5. If you love great steak, great service, and a great atmosphere, you'll love Jack's.

Ordered a filet - medium (don't come at me, it wasn't mine), came out with no more than a sear. Cold, red, chewy middle. Also ordered a ribeye - medium rare. Came out with barely even any pink left in the meat. Fat was tough and chewy. I can do better with a ribeye from Walmart and my iron skillet. And next time I will. Or I'll just go to outback like I should've. Both steaks were barely seasoned at all. Let's talk about the salad. What in the cole slaw was that? It was like a 2 to 1 dressing to salad ratio. Baked potato was passable. The pound of butter and sour cream they serve to drown it in was appreciated but next time cut the amount down by half and take a few bucks off the tab. Place was also hot as Hades. Must've been at least 78 inside. Service was ~ok~. Only real standout was the younger dude who kept my water glass full. Hope he got part of the $20 tip. On the plus side, at least my bloody mary was so weak that there was absolutely no chance of me getting a DUI on the way home. I don't get the hype. People in Redding just have low standards. If you want a filet, go to Kobe. If you want a ribeye, just go to a chain (yeah it's that bad). If you want a good meal, go anywhere else.

The entrance was a bit tough to recognize. In addition, the sign requesting patrons to wait to be seated was absent personnel. The youngster arrived while on the phone taking a reservation. Further delay as she coordinated seating for the large group (showing up on Wednesday, she shared). She mentioned they were slow and said I could select whatever table I liked. I ordered a savory martini and filet mignon, mashed potatoes and French onion soup. Soup arrived with the martini and the two could not have been more oppositely received. The soup exquisite, the martini...nearly undrinkable. But to be fair, I wasn't expecting an overwhelming bell pepper flavor. Black pepper Absolute Vodka was the description. I detest bell peppers. I tried to choke down as much as I could, then decided to give up halfway through. The soup was sublime. A 1/4 inch slice of brown toast under the melted Swiss cheese, the broth and onions delicious. I requested a 6 ounce pour of the Caymus California Cabernet Sauvignon with the steak. It arrived with my meat and potatoes beautifully plated. I'm not sure I wasn't served a sirloin. That filet was the shape of no filet I've ever bought or been served. But it was perfectly cooked and the mashed potatoes were sublime - buttery and flavorful. The wine with less tannins than I anticipated- I really enjoyed that. Service was attentive and both the hostess and my server checked on me. My drive back to Sacramento will be pleasant.

Only downside, if you are dropping almost $200 for dinner, the bathrooms need to be clean and upscale. Our waitress was wonderful, the cook was prompt and masterful, the Owner oversaw his restaurant like a proud Lord watching over his kingdom, greeting friends and customers warmly. Balance: quantity and quality versus price were good. Cleanliness: the restaurant was good and good clean order, only complaint is there were a few flys. Clearly the opportunistic as it seemed every time someone would open a door a fly would charge in as quickly as they could following the sweet sweet smell of barbecue. Deliciousness: when I tell you I'm a barbecue snob, I mean it in every sense of the word. I've been grilling since I was a child, I've lived in the south I've lived in the east I've lived on the West Coast and I've lived in the Carolinas. My palate is normally greatly displeased with every barbecue I encounter but I take it for its own merit. Each grill master has their own ups and downs. So when I tell you this was some of the best barbecue I've ever had in my life you can take it as gospel. What you taste when you eat the barbecue here is the meat, the smoke, and the love that goes into it which is a vague term that is hard to define, if I were to try I would have to say that it's a combination of care, the way they prepare it and take care of the meat after it's prepared, seasoning, seasoning is very easy to overdo depending on the meat how long it's going to be cooked what cut it is where it came from how it was processed etc, and how they cut slice or prepare it. That's what love means when it comes to grilling and barbecue. Care, seasoning, preparation. So yes, Old Mill Eatery and Smokehouse blew me away. I only sampled their ground beef, bacon, and tri-tip, but if those are any indicator at the mastery they have over meat I am looking forward to trying everything they have to offer. My tri-tip was cooked to perfection, I could taste the beef, although it was shaved very thin because I had it on a sandwich I could still tell it was tri-tip and not just roast beef being pushed off as tri-tip, the bread was fluffy and fresh and seared with a bit of butter, soft and warm but crisp on the edge, the onion rings were fluffy and yet crispy on the outside, the garlic tater tots were perfect in every way crispy crunchy and savory, the bacon blue Burger was cooked to perfection it was not overpowered by blue cheese crumble and the bacon almost seemed as if it was not only peppered but candied in thick slabs, the side order of garlic bread was perfectly cooked crisp on the edges fluffy in the middle buttery and garlicky as it should be. Absolutely incredible top marks! Environment: there are only a few tables as the restaurant is a bit smaller but what they do with their space is comfortable and works. The restaurant itself is decorated like a lodge, reminiscent of a sawmill or a logging camp, with treated wood and a log cabin aesthetic, the decorations themselves consist mostly of historic articles and photos of both friend and family and the history of the restaurant. They also sell very cool cups that I definitely meant to get and will have to go back to that one for myself and the Missus. I need to make a mental note of that. All together this was a fantastic experience and I can't wait to go back. Their menu had so many things I want to try. The French toast tacos caught my eye definitely going to try that. But more importantly to me I want more of that barbecue, I want to try the brisket, sausage, chicken, pulled pork, I want to try it all! If the other items are half as good as what I had today I don't think I need to eat anywhere else. If you find yourself in Shasta Lake do yourself a favor and try the Old Mill Eatery and Smokehouse. See if you can take on their Giant Smokehouse Burger or a Pit Master challenge.

We were seated along the large window overlooking patio seating and the Sacramento River. The views are truly lovely. Our server, MJ greeted us kindly and took our beverage order. I ordered a glass of their House White, which was a 2022 California Chardonnay and was quite good. My partner ordered an iced tea. For dinner we ordered the Ribeye and the Filet, both cooked medium. Our food arrived approximately 30 minutes after ordering. The quality of the beef here was absolutely top notch. Prime beef for sure. This was the best steak I have enjoyed in Shasta County in over 10 years. Absolutely cooked to perfection. My partner's filet was massive. This had to be at least a 20 ounce filet and he enjoyed every morsel. The sides accompanying our mains, mashed potatoes and carrots for him and mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts for me, were fair to good, but not great. The carrots were raw. As in, not only very crunchy but cold all the way through. Mashed potatoes were nice and buttery, but not nearly warm enough. These spuds sat on a plate until the beef arrived. The restaurant was very kind in offering us a complimentary slice of cheesecake since we were celebrating an anniversary. The cheesecake was dense and rich and accompanied by berry sauce and caramel sauce, both of which were lovely. Freshly piped whipped cream and mixed berries and powdered sugar on the dessert plate made for a very lovely presentation, indeed, and was most appreciated. Service the entire meal was excellent. Price for our meals: $135 + $27 gratuity for a total of $162. We have paid nearly as much for a steak dinner elsewhere in Shasta County for a meal that came nowhere close to this. Worth. Every.
