She is a graciously sincere kind person and will be very helpful to make sure her guests are well cared for. Thanks to her yet again for making our trip extra wonderful. It is a great place to launch watercraft and explore. Today on the river was beautiful and I can't wait for next time! Be sure to take the time to visit Walter's Camp and don't let the bumpy gravel road deter you! Say hi to Tabitha and check out the general store. It's well stocked for a small place. Thankful yet again!!

The general store has a few items, merchandise, and even a bar back that is used when the camp is in full swing after Memorial Day according to Tabitha. I chose a far site at the edge of the property underneath two tamarisk/salt cedar trees which was great for shade. I launched my canoe at the concrete boat ramp and paddled the old Colorado River channel right out in front of the camp which is not lacking in it's scenery of Cibola Natl Wildlife Refuge and the beautiful Trigo Mountains Wilderness viewable eastward. Nighttime is where things came alive! Dozens of braying burros, coyotes, and owls that would hoot up a storm in the trees above me. An a/c or refrigeration until by the general store ran in cycles all night and was about as annoying as someone running a generator. The facilities provided had showers and pit toilets, all in good condition. Taking a moment to stretch/yoga before the morning paddle in the communal hang out area in front of the general store was a great idea. I was greeted by an amazing SW sherbet sunrise over the calm waters of the inner channel of the Colorado, it was spectacular. I'm typically a dispersed camper, so some of my gripes about the noise you can probably take with a grain of salt. Would I stay the night again? Sure, but I'd prefer something a bit more isolated. Thank you Tabitha for all your advice on boating the river as a novice, appreciate what you do!

For long term Pay fee with camp host. Host will give you a pass to stick to your tent/campsite & car. The camp hosts when we were there (Sally & Jodi) were awesome! Sally showed us how to get to the geode beds & Opal mine. She also showed us what to look for and what rocks can be found in the area. Can't wait to go back! Pro: -close to hauser & opal mine -Vaulted toilet (outhouse with toilet seat and pit) -limited water (hand pump) -can surface pick from creek nearby (chalcedony, lava rocks, agates, etc) -quiet -roomy campsites -fire pit -fire pit/grill -bbq grill -picnic tables- some sites have a canopy -no "light pollution": you can see all the stars & milky way! Cons: NOTHING Note: Keep food locked/packed at night! There are animals that come around at night looking for food. We locked our coolers in truck bed, but found animal poop on the table. They were obviously looking for food. But they keep to themselves, did not wake us up or make noise. The road to get to campground is awful (dirt, bumpy), so go SLOW! If you are heading to the Hauser geode bed and Opal mine, you will need a high clearance vehicle!!!! No exceptions!!! There are some gnarly dips and creek/river crossings!

If you can get over that it makes for an interesting visit though. Because the desert is less interesting than Death Valley and Joshua Tree this is about as isolated as one can get in Southern California. On a Sunday at the end of March, when the campground is at its nicest, there were only two or three groups camping out of a total of more than twenty camp sites. The road in was reasonable for a two wheel drive vehicle, I got there in a Prius without trouble. However you won't be able to make it on any of the other nearby roads. Without four wheel drive a lot of the attractions such as the geode beds will be a prohibitively long walk. There was a little bit of Verizon cell phone coverage, but no AT&T.

The atmosphere felt calm and friendly with campfires, laughter, and the sound of water nearby. Teenagers would love how social and laid back it feels because it gives them a chance to enjoy nature without pressure. The service was helpful especially when checking in or asking about campsite options. The value was excellent with affordable camping and RV spots. The quality of the grounds and river access was high and everything felt safe and well managed. The selection of activities like camping, exploring, and relaxing by the water made it perfect for teenagers who enjoy the outdoors. I have only been there once before writing this review but it was one of the most refreshing places I have visited. I highly recommend that teenagers go there because it gives them a chance to enjoy nature in a playful and peaceful way.
