The housekeeper, Claudia, at the hotel we stayed recommended this spot; in particular their chorizo sizzler. Wife ordered their chilaquiles. The food and service were great! Portions are definitely not small, great as a brunch that will carry you to dinner time! The chilaquiles sauce was definitely made from scratch, great blend of spices and just a perfect touch of fire. The chorizo sizzler had a good balance of potatoes, onions, and bell peppers. The heat for this dish came from a roasted jalapeño. If I could suggest a thing, it would be with their drinks. The Bloody Mary mix needed some extra love and toppings. Their Buffalo Milk tasted like a chocolate banana shake with a splash of vodka. I would have used a banana liqueur and a splash of Kahlua. We came across Pancake Cottage after docking from our afternoon ferry ride and they were just bustling enough at lunch time to give a try :) The restaurant was nice and clean, with all doors and windows open, making it almost as if you're dining right on the ocean front. We ate at the Pancake Cottage because we had essentially exhausted our other options after 3-4 days in Avalon. We were staying nearby, so got up early-ish and beat the line. We waited about 5 min for a four top, which was easy compared with waits we saw later when the line stretched in front of the building. Service was pretty good, with coffee flowing regularly and food coming out quickly. Unfortunately, the food itself was lack luster. The scrambled eggs were loveless and kind of rubbery. The staff was exceptionally nice. I just wanted a table with a plug, which seems to be a rarity in Avalon--I tried several places, and a mocha latte. And Yay! Today I pulled up to the cottage expecting a great experience yet I didn't get that. Instead I was met with disrespect. I wanted to ask a question about ingredients with in the burrito, my waiter was busy so I decided to ask another one. The first time I asked the guy said he would be back and never came back. We came here for a late breakfast to start our day on Friday the 14th. When we arrived on the list and we saw a long line to get in here, and hood reviews for it, so trying it out was high on our list. My son ordered the biscuits & gravy, my daughter got a grilled cheese sandwich, my wife the eggs Benny add spinach, & I ended up trying the chicken fried Benny. All the food was excellent. The fried chicken Benny was really good, better than I thought it was going to be. The views from this place are awesome. This is our go-to breakfast spot in Avalon for years. In the summer, it is quite busy at breakfast-- often with a wait for patrons arriving after 8a. In the low season, you can walk in and be seated immediately. They do take reservations for larger parties, but I think it's parties of 10+. It's a quaint spot, bright and airy, with views of the harbor. Service is always kind and attentive. I'm a huge fan of their pancakes -- among my favorite pancakes anywhere! Other items, like eggs, bacon/sausage, omelettes, etc... are good but typical. They have a kids menu with plenty of options. Coffee is average quality and $4.50/cup which is overpriced. Obviously, water conservation is a major issue in Catalina, but the restaurant doesn't offer complimentary water. Instead, they sell water bottles. At $2/each, it's not a terrible rip off, but other restaurants in town DO serve cups of water. When you factor in the plastic waste and fuel needed to ship water across the channel, it seems more environmentally irresponsible. Maybe others would disagree with my opinion. Either way, you can bring your own water bottle. read more

The Location is close to the dock. Nice Ocean view. That's the only thing we enjoyed. The staff was less than friendly and unaccommodating. I asked for water and was told that no tap water is available only bottled water for purchase. The server told us that the restaurants on the island haven't been allowed to serve tap water for 3 years. We had already eaten at several other restaurants on the island that gave us tap water. I feel that they are taking advantage of tourists just arriving on Catalina that are hungry and thirsty. The Pancake Cottage is one of the first restaurants you see after getting off the ship. I was hoping the fried chicken was a whole Fried chicken piece rather than a ground chicken/chicken nugget type of texture for the fried chicken. Came with potatoes that weren't that crispy.
