I want to be fair and I think one star is all I can offer. The one star is not for the food, it's for the hospitality. It has been pleasant both times I've eaten here. The food, however, has not. They portend to be slightly nicer than Panda Express, but I'd take that fast food joint over anything I've eaten. Of course, the egg rolls are edible, but those are impossible to screw up. It's not that the food is BAD, it's just not good. It seems like they use the same sauce on a lot of items and cook the dishes with as minimal care as possible. My food practically came out of the kitchen before I finished ordering. It's never warm. It always feels slapped together. I've tried the Kung Pao Chicken, Spicy Shrimp with Vegetables, and Mongolian Beef. All were less than average. I recommend Rice Bowl as a better Americanized Chinese joint. I really like going to Panda. As for the aforementioned rude, rushed service, that is one of the reasons we go there. Quick in and out & the portions are large. Your food comes nearly immediately after you make your selection. I wouldn't say the staff is really rude, maybe it is the culture difference. I too LOVE the Mongolian beef. That is the only place we get it and enjoy it. A friend once tried to make a substitution on one of the lunch combos and was given a strange look, so I wouldn't recommend trying that, but DO try Panda. I've actually been in there a couple of times and the tv wasn't even on. Every other time it was on espn. :( hard to keep my husbands focus at dinner when sports are on. read more

I came here with my brother and dad around 10 because pretty much all of the other restaurants were closing at this time and we didn't want drive through. My brother and I order dinner combos while my dad ordered some pricey seafood dish. The food came fast and in small portions. Honestly it tastes like they just took frozen food and popped it in the microwave for a couple minutes then gave it to us, the flavor was bland, and my chow mein was cold even my dad said his food was cold. For 3 cold nasty dishes we ended up paying $53. We would have been better off going to McDonald's at least the food would have tasted better. read more

I love hole-in-the-wall restaurants and cafes. Just like Anthony Bourdain will attest, these humble places are where flavor and authenticity reign supreme. (Bourdain would rather eat your grandmother's long-cooked stew of offal rather than go to a pretentious 5-star restaurant any day!) Back when I was just a little kid, my family would patronize another hole-in-the-wall take-out called Kowloon Kitchen, just your basic Chinese take-away, but, like your first pizza of your childhood, this would become the standard by which all over Chinese food would be judged. Of course, Kowloon Kitchen in SoCal has long since closed their doors, and I have been on the hunt of food that would come even close to what I was raised upon. Panda Restaurant blew my socks off as well as my brain. This place was strongly recommended by my cabbie when I returned to Anchorage, and she was so correct with her critique. The deep-fried prawns tasted just like the shrimp rings I remember having back when I was seven. (I'm so glad I ordered 2 orders of this!) The simple fried rice had those delicious flavors that come for a wonderfully matured patina of a stalwart wok. And the teriyaki short ribs had both of my most favorite BBQ flavors - kalbi and teriyaki - that went beyond my expectations. But what really slammed be back to my past was their hot and sour soup. Most hot and sour soup taste pretty much the same - egg drop soup with veggies, tofu and a few shots of sriracha... But this one reminds me of the tomato-vegetable base of the soups my mother would make when I was five, not just dumping some kimchi into the pot. Though the heat was just a little hotter than I would normally like it, I couldn't stop eating it, and the heat adjusted just fine afterwards. I think what made it special is that I could taste just a hint of real tomato juice (not V8 or condensed tomato soup) just to give it that je ne sais quoi that made it so special. I had a craving for really good Mongolian Beef...so I turned to YELP and the fellow reviewers all say "good". I walked in and ordered MB to go for lunch (no soup with lunch to go orders but that's okay, I don't care much for egg drop soup anyways). I got the Mongolian beef, served on the crunchy rice noodles, fried rice that was not greasy at all, a small egg roll, a tiny cup of sweet sour sauce and a fortune cookie for less than $9. It was ready in about five minutes. I took it to the office and immediately drew a crowd. What kills me about this place is that they advertise that they are the "Ten Best Places to Eat" in the US in USA Today. Really????? Why??? I get the impression that the food here is all made ahead, just waiting for the right neon colored sauce to be ladled on. I've seen a phoned-in order show up in 5-10 minutes. That's too fast! I had low expectations going in, based on the Yelp reviews as well as what I had heard around town. They're open late, so our team ordered some take-out for the night shift. I got the Phoenix and Dragon (chicken and shrimp if you want to be a dick about it). Big portion, plenty of chicken and shrimp, tangy sauce, crispy veggies. I ate it slowly through a 12 hr shift and I was stuffed the whole time. I also felt pretty sick afterwards but that's the price of doing business with the MSG devil. Placed an order for delivery through their website. It was fairly easy and convenient. The one star can go towards that. Ordered 2 combo plates for $14.95 each. They came with 2 entrées, fried rice, and an eggroll. Sesame chicken looked and tasted like mediocre sweet and sour chicken sprinkled with sesame seeds. Schezuan beef tasted ok, but consisted of mostly vegetables. Spicy shrimp tasted like it had the same sauce as the Schezuan beef and also consisted of mostly vegetables. The chow mein was made with what looked like spaghetti noodles and had grisly pieces of meat. The eggroll and fried rice were...meh. The portions were pretty small for the price. Not satisfied with the meal what so ever. For this kind of "Chinese food" I'd rather go to the Safeway deli where the prices are waaaay less and the food is either on par or much better. read more

The exterior of the building was inviting and as you walk in you see a banner of excellence for their food and cooking experience. My experience beg the differ. First the lo mein noddles were spagethi noddles (they tried to pull a switchyroo on an asian person, big mistake!). Second cabbage soup is not the same as hot and sour soup. I got delivery which took an hour. I didn't mind because they had told me upfront the wait time. Food got over and I had ordered my husband shrimp fried rice which they don't use real shrimp. They use shrimp meat which is about the size of a thumb nail if not smaller. The food was overall meek. It was really just okay. The food seemed like food court food. I would say their sweet and sour pork is pretty good and I got their mongolian beef was eh, could have been better. I also ordered the lomein which seemed like the only thing that came right and wasn't just bleak of flavor. Long, but worth the read... If I could leave zero stars, I would. Service is deplorable! At least the food was somewhat okay. Husband and I ordered online for delivery, and when we checked out, the option was to pay with cash, or via card. We select card as we rarely ever carry cash. Restaurant calls and confirms our order with us, no problem. Normally, when I order online, there's an option to pay with card on their website, or the restaurant will call and for the card number. Neither of these two things happened. We get our food, and the driver says he cannot take a card number and asks us if we have cash. I say no, that's why we chose to pay with card. Here's where things start to go crazy. Driver instructs us to call the restaurant, to pay for our food. I called the restaurant and they told me that they could not take a payment over the phone! I asked how then I was supposed to pay for my food? I just wound up hanging up. 40 minutes go by, and the driver is back at our door, and calling my phone incessantly demanding that I pay him. I tell him no I'm not going to pay, as I tried to 40 minutes ago and nobody would take a payment. This guy starts POUNDING on my door, threatening to call the police because I won't open the door or answer his phone calls. Long story short, the restaurant called back and I explained everything, and eventually gave payment, as we felt guilty. Panda boasts being rated one of the top restaurants in the country, but that was a while back. They were great at one time, but I have had one too many disappointing meals there. I still love their Mongolian beef, but that is about it. What gets me ticked off the most is the incredibly rude service. They really rush you. Make that incredibly rush you. Example you ask? They take your order, bring your soup and before you can say Kung Pao your lunch is there. I'm not a fan of their huge flat screen tv either since they only seem to have access to the FOX news channel. I think Rice Bowl is my new favorite. Also I agree with Michael G. Wow, unequivocally the WORST food I have ever purchased from a restaurant. The picture in the menu made the "Seafood Platter" look teaming with assorted seafood. It was a long day at work, and I was hungry, so I ordered it to go - even though it was probably the most expensive item in the menu. I also ordered a large (only size the offered) hot sour soup. 24 bucks got me a styrofoam box filled with stir fry vegetables. The seafood consisted of exactly: Four small (inch long) pieces of crab leg, four shrimps, and four of what I think were muscles. There were dozens of small round crunchy white vegetables, probably water crest nuts, cut to resemble clam pieces. What I got was barely edible, and I had to spit out several vegetable pieces too hard to chew (yes, too hard to chew vegetables). I couldn't finish the food, not because I was full, but because I was thoroughly dissatisfied. Hoping the hot-sour soup would be better (but I had serious doubts), I tried a spoonful. Blech! I tried another spoonful. Double blech! So here I am now in my hotel room. 24 bucks poorer, tired from a hard day's work, and starved. PLEASE READ THESE REVIEWS BEFORE EATING HERE! Because of declining quality, we have been avoiding Panda Chinese Restaurant for quite some time. This evening we gave them another chance. My mistake. My better half ordered the garlic shrimp. The shrimp was scarce, what was there was like rubber. The vegetables were over cooked and the flavor was anything but garlic. Totally bland and lacking flavor. I ordered the combo meal, Mongolian Beef / spicy shrimp. Again, rubbery shrimp and subpar veggies. The Mongolian Beef was so burnt tasting it was totally inedible. I spent $35 just to feed my garbage disposal. With so many options for Asian food in the Spenard area, there really is no reason to order from here. read more

Writing this review from the bathroom. You can imagine why. 4th day of stomach issues. The food was much better a few years ago under the previous ownership. My buddy warned me not to order from Panda anymore but I ignored him since I had fond memories of the House Fried Rice with the egg on top. My wife and I ordered take out on Friday night and ended up with stomach issues for the remainder of the weekend and today. We had the house fried rice and broccoli beef as well. Service was friendly but we won't be back anytime soon because of the stomach issues and the food quality wasn't good anymore. I ordered from their website tonight, the ordering was simple and they called within a few minutes to confirm the order. I was told an hour and a half wait, being Saturday night I understood. My food was here within an hour. I ordered lemon chicken & hot and sour soup. My lemon chicken was ao tangy and perfect. Its breaded and there are delicious crispy pieces. Loved it. I ate a small bowl if the chicken and went to get myself some of the soup. I expected it to be warm, but what I didnt expect was cracking open a thick plastic container that released steam from the soup! -- i should also add they delivered all the way to Muldoon-- the soup was perfectly spiced (i asked for medium hot in comments) but I did find it a little salty. I've eaten at this place over the years, but I never ordered because I just assumed they didn't deliver to Muldoon. They do! Absolutely love this place. read more

Food prepared quickly and delivered to the table hot BUT my dish was not prepared as described on the menu, which was Kung po shrimp. The shrimp was not fried, consisted mostly of non traditional Chinese vegetables, and was not spicy. I can not recommend nor will I return. read more

I usually stick with the Egg Flower Soup, as this is my favorite place to get it from in town, but this time I decided to try the Shrimp Lo Mein and it was by far the best I've had. My husband travels to Alaska once a year and always bring me home my favorites from when I lived there. The kids and I were so excited to have some house fried rice. I'm not sure if the chef changed or what but this is most definitely is not the same as I have been eating since 1999. My kids even knew the difference. This isn't even remotely the same flavors. I have nothing bad to say about their food. It's always hot and fresh when I order and I've always order for delivery. They say it takes 45min-1hr, but I've had it delivered within 30. I paid so much money for this food. I really am so sad when I think about this restaurant - it used to be amazing, always fresh with extra vegetables, shrimp and meat. Now, if you order anything that requires meat or seafood, be prepared for a meal drenched in oil that consists 90% of onion. The fried rice is an absolute atrocity - The rice is hardened, clearly quite old, there are barely any vegetables, and meat? You are a lucky soul if you receive more than three pieces, and don't get me started on the meat's quality. What I genuinely want to know is what in the world happened to this place? They used to be an amazing establishment, proven by the awards they received years ago. Appprently because of covid they are putting a 15% delivery charge on to bills. Yet no where on there webpage before ordering does it state this. You can't hide the fact your over charging people with ridiculous fees without telling us. We are trying to support local but yet your screwing the people who are trying to keep you open.
