Our first visit to Kim's was on 12/20/22. In the spirit of Christmas I did not publish. Since today went about the same, here's the review: In comparing Asian restaurants, my neighbors and I all agree it's worth the drive to Anchorage for Kenny's. I asked about Kim's and must have hit a funny bone. "The food is good. The service is below par. Parking is plentiful, the fish tank is their best feature." Ouch! I learned a long time ago to listen to all opinions and all advice, but, reach my own conclusions. I walked in and asked for a carry-out menu. "Sorry, no...not." Huh? I understand that english is a very complicated second language so I clarify, "Are you saying you don't have carry-out?" She shakes her head and says "Sorry" with a frown. I've seen a lot over the years, but an Asian restaurant with no to-go? Not fathomable. I'm sure they must have carry out...but, apparently no to go menus. You order online. Looking around the huge restaurant there isn't a single person eating here on a Tuesday night at 5:00. How do they keep the lights on? No carry out, no one's in here eating? Could be the cost. Other than some of the special sushi rolls, there's nothing under $16. One order of General Tao chicken is $24. Are you serious? Come to find out the portion size was tiny in comparison to most I've ever seen. A vast menu of Chinese, Japanese and Thai that, unfortunately, sways you to eat starters or sides. Bummer, they don't have almond chicken. The General Tao chicken cannot be with sauce on the side (a big thing with us) and the pineapple fried rice isn't fried, it's steamed, almost gravy. I'm not sure if the veggies are fried or if anything is. I won't overreact and call tonight a disaster. I always do multiple visits just to be sure it wasn't a fluke. Here? My wife and I had a late lunch today. I had the Seafood PHO from the Vietnamese portion of the extensive menu. They serve Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese cuisine. The large bowl of PHO was full of seafood and vegetables. Three large shrimp, two mussels, two rings of calamari, one scallop, pieces of crab, a cup and a half of noodles and four cups of broth plus two large slices of fresh jalapeño, mushrooms, parsley, bean sprouts and another green vegetable combined to make an excellent soup. My wife had a sushi roll with seaweed wrap, avocado, and rice. We shared an order of very large Thai Spring Rolls (3) with two sauces. It was an excellent lunch that over filled our tummies. May not need dinner tonight. The service was fast, efficient and friendly. I would recommend this restaurant for individuals, families and groups. Definitely a place to go causal for an excellent meal or more formal for special occasions or parties. read more

It breaks my heart to do this but our experience was so bad I feel the need to share. The food was at best bland and tasteless with the exception of the fried rice which was so spicy none of the kids would eat it. Even for adults it was not edible. The miso soup was flavorful but not in a good way. Weird taste to it. So at this point the kids have walked away not wanting to eat at all. To get the food in the first place it was over hour and half wait. To top it off we came for New Years for the fortune cookies and asked politely a few times for some and never got any. What happened Kim? This used to be our favorite place years ago. The decorations are nice and staff are friendly but in the end we'd like to be able to eat the food brought to us. Great food and menu has big selection so there is something for everyone. Sushi fresh, clean, and plated nicely, atmosphere and staff make you feel really comfortable and welcome. I went for lunch and got one of the bento box specials and the dynamite roll. I was satisfied with the bento box, but disappointed in the dynamite roll. The salmon was ground into a paste and lacked flavor. I wouldn't get it again. The shrimp tempura was hot, bulgogi was average, and the rice/edamame were pretty standard as well. Nothing outstanding but it wasn't bad. I ate most of my bento box. Service was prompt, and our drinks were kept filled. The restaurant itself is really pretty inside with a fancy date atmosphere. Beautifully decorated! If I'm in Eagle River, I would try to go for a dinner, but I would order the sashimi instead. read more

Ordered a salad to go. First the salad appears larger than it really is because it's been put in the type of to go box with the three sections divided out, so there's a lot of just hollow space under the salad. But the worst part was my salad was hot and soggy, even though A LOT of the liquid spilled out on the rest off the food in the go to bag. It was a mess. I would love to give more stars, but this isn't my first bad experience with the restaurant. Prices have gone up. When we arrived at Kim's we were greeted quickly & seated. Our server came over right away, I normally get the persons name & this time I didn't & wished I did. She wasn't great but she wasn't bad either.. I'm guessing she was new since she didn't know too much about the food & what came with the dishes & how to pronounce some of the names. However in our times of Covid I'm glad the restaurant is able to find workers . We had a party of 4, now onto the food. My mother ordered shrimp & veggie tempura & rice & received only the shrimp & had to ask for the veggies & didn't get the rice. My father ordered the special fried rice & the portion was huge. Both of them liked their meals. My husband ordered the Cajun Seared Tuna & that was very tasty. I ordered the Kung pau chicken which is supposed to be hot, I thought the flavor was lacking & it lacked heat. I wouldn't order this again. We ordered hot sake our server forgot to bring that out, therefore we had to ask for it. Kim's has a very large selection to choose from so on that note I will give them another chance in the future to see if my thoughts have changed. read more

This place is gross. I've been here twice and both experiences were terrible It's expensive. The sushi is absolutely not fresh, it tasted several days old. We didn't eat it. They didn't care. We came here starving and needed something quick. Also felt bad because they were closing in 30mins but they were able to squeeze us in. The menu selection was quite vast and if you are looking for Asian food and can't decide on a place for one type, this is the place to come to. The food I'd give a 2/5. The green curry was quite watery and not as viscous as I would expect in a Thai curry. It had good flavor though. The sesame chicken was tasty but it was luke warm and tasted like something you get out of a box (where you heat the pre-fried chicken in an oven and add the sauce after it's done reheating). Because they were able to squeeze us in, I'd rate their service 4/5. They came by to fill our waters and were active in seeing how our meal was despite them closing soon. I took off 1 star because I had to get a fork from the tray myself. Seeing as this was Alaska and I didn't have high expectations to begin with,(especially coming from an Asian background)I was satisfied with the experience. Second time here and I had another great experience. Last time I ordered the drunken man noodles with shrimp and it was very good but not spicy at all. I'm not someone that is an avid spicy food eater, but it truly wasn't spicy. I'll ask for hot next time. Today I thought I would give the sushi a try and it did not disappoint! I ordered the Tiffany Roll and it was delicious. I also noticed a lot of other people ordering sushi, so I think this is the place to go for that. Way better than Jimmy's Sushi down the street. Their rolls are a good size filled with goodness and not just a bunch of rice on the outside. Their spicy mayo actually has a good kick to it and is my favorite that I've had out of anywhere I've been so far in Eagle River and Anchorage. This is my new favorite local sushi spot! read more

Shine's is one of the better options for dining in Eagle River, at least when it comes to atmosphere. There's a lot of tables, booths, and space at the sushi bar. The downside is often (especially during less busy times) there's no one at the front to seat you so you're left waiting for one the servers to come out. The lunch bento boxes offered between 11:00am and 3:00pm Monday-Friday are a pretty good deal. I only ever order sushi from here, so I can't speak to the other items of the menu, but there are a lot of options. During my last visit I ordered the chirashi lunch, which I felt was a good price and portion size. All the fish was good besides the tuna; something about the taste and texture seemed off, like it was weirdly chewy. Maybe it was a bad cut of fish, I don't know. The sushi chef was very generous and gave me hijiki and cucumber as well as freshly cut oranges which I very much appreciated. Service has generally been adequate here, albeit a little on the slow side. In terms of food quality I prefer Jimmy's Sushi (coincidentally now located where Shine's used to be), but Shine's is a good option too, particularly if you have a larger group. read more

Honestly, I loved this place. My bf & I were trying out different restaurants outside of Anchorage & found this place. The service was amazing and the food was also good. My bf got the udon noodles, I had gotten the tyonkatsu (or something like that) and we were blown away. The unagi sushi wasn't exactly our favorite, but it was decent. We came and they were busy as heck and only had 2 servers so we definitely had to wait a while before our food came. HOWEVER, the servers were so nice about it & even offered us free salad and soup for the wait. Everyone was so incredible. We'll definitely come here whenever we're on this side of Alaska. read more

Had a fantastic experience here this evening. I can't believe I just found out about this place. It's in a little strip mall and just blends in with the rest but the inside is just wow! Not what you'd expect when you take a glance from the outside. The first thing I noticed was how clean, organized and tastefully decorated this place was. It was not what I expected. I'd say the decor is very modern/contemporary and you can see the Asian fusion. The place feels huge on the inside, with plenty of seating. I felt very comfortable here and it honestly felt like a breath of fresh air compared to all the quaint and run down restaurants in the area. They've got so many options too, which is a plus plus times a bagillian in my book. If you're a newbie prepare to stare at the menu and flip page after page and finding yourself torn between 3 different meals. They have sushi, Japanese, Korean, Thai, and a few others to say the least. After an eternity of becoming One with the menu, I finally decided to go for sushi. The big plus is how they were able to make a customized roll for me. I truly appreciated that. My meal came with miso soup. It had a wonderful taste and aroma and the temperature was on point. I also ordered some edamame but it was nothing impressive. For dessert, the fried oreos! Somehow the waitress just knew. By the way, she was phenomenal. She was so attentive and such a kind lady. She made us feel great about our choices and had a positive attitude and great disposition. The prices here are very reasonable in my opinion. Two of us were able to get sushi, edamame, a small side of rice and dessert for about $40 before tip. Considering how everything in Alaska seems to cost an arm and a leg, this seemed pretty reasonable. It's worth checking out. I would even say it might be a nice date spot too :-) Don't let the outside fool you, this restaurant is a real gem and I'll definitely be returning in the near future.....I think I hear the fried Oreos calling my name!.... We have been going here for a few years. It's now called Kim's Asian Fusion and is owned by the nail salon owners next door. They have added a Vietnamese portion to the menu recently. On average it's pretty good. They used to offer miso soup no matter what you ordered however I believe that has changed with the new owners. If not, we just did t get offered ours this last visit. The staff is always friendly. The thing that gets me though is that it it always smells like bleach cleaner. Now that's not a bad thing that they clean but I cannot stand smelling cleaner and food together. It's an appetite killer. The sushi is not amazing but it's good. read more

My family and I ate here when it was still Shine's Sushi and Cuisine, which was 4 years ago, and the food was amazing back then. Service was better. Take out is about "1 hour" but took 2.5 hours last time I ordered. I've ordered take out twice with these people and the food is awful not to mention, the service. I ordered a bento box with chicken teriyaki and the chicken was undercooked, with no flavor from "teriyaki sauce." The only good thing from the entire dinner box was the steamed white rice. I've seen they also upgraded the restaurant decor and you would think food would be top of the line for such fancy decor. Absolutely disappointing. Never eating from the place ever again. read more

Costumer service was good but the "gassed" tuna was a huge red flag for me. Gassing tuna is the process of treating it with carbon monoxide to prevent the aging meat from turning brown. It's safe to eat but says a lot about the quality of food the restarting is willing to serve. Raw fish is a personal delicacy of mine and flags like these ruin the experience. When we arrived we waited about 5 minutes to be seated and about 20 minutes for the waitress to take our order. They were not busy, our waitress was on break and the other waitress working the floor refused to help. Once our waitress was back on shift she was very nice and attentive. We ordered the soft shell crab tempura, bento box a and the vegetable pad Thai. You get one crab, which was good and crispy, it was just small. The California roll was semi-bland and the pad Thai had a lot of sauce on it. They do not put peanuts on their pad Thai. I asked to substitute the California roll for a veggie roll in a bento box, but could not because they no longer give six pieces in the bento box. The fortune cookies were stale and not edible... Always happy when I come here. I am always seated immediately and the wait staff is attentive and kind. There are a lot of items to choose from, so you're bound to find something to suit you. The sushi is well prepared and priced accordingly. I've tried so many items and never been disappointed. The restaurant is clean and charming. It does get busy and loud, but good for them for being busy. If you don't like a noisy dinner crowd (screaming kids) go early or a little later than 6pm on the dot. Clean restrooms as well. Really great upgrade from the old location. I hesitate to write a review because it was already busy when we stopped in for dinner and I don't want everyone to go there! Let's keep it our secret. First off, the decor. Haven't seen many restaurants in AK (maybe none) that look like they've been professionally decorated (except for the 80s looking chandeliers?). It's like you've entered a strip mall in Eagle River and were immediately transported somewhere trendy, surely not AK. We were seated promptly by friendly staff and our food came out quickly even though they were fairly busy. The sushi bar is pretty large and there were at least 2 sushi makers there, which is more than I can say for some places. I didn't get any sushi this time but the plates I saw come out of there were beautiful. Hubby and I had salmon teriyaki and oyako don buri and our bill was less than $30. The food was delicious and of course comes with miso soup and a salad. Looks like they may have expanded the menu as well. I can't wait to go back! read more

I have no idea what the other reviews are talking about, it has just gone under new management as of June 24th, and I've been so impressed. By far my fav place to eat in Eagle River. Their Mongolian Beef is insanely good. Friend got a mixed sushi plate and raved about it as well. Miso soup and egg drop soup are delicious, and the side salads are fantastic. Hubby had the teriyaki chicken combo. Chicken was nice and tender. Edamame could have used some salt, but all other components quite tasty. Our server was friendly and efficient, but was slow in the beginning. It's tucked in a strip mall in Eagle River, but don't let that fool you. Very classy, soft lighting and quiet.
