Craving Chinese but didn't want the local greasy spoon. Used my U eats app and found Panda Garden was available. It's been at least 8 years since we've been but do recall it being very good. We ordered the Pu Pu Platter for one, General Tso Chicken, an egg roll, and Pork Fried rice. Order arrived hot and ready. Presentation was not bad for take out. They arranged Pu Pu platter items in a neat pattern. The GTC was crispy, plenty of chilies, and a nice textured sauce. Pork fried rice as good as well with very little onions which can be overwhelming at some establishments. Pu Pu Platter was plentiful for my hungry man. He even had left overs! Unheard of with him. I put this Chinese food in the category of "American Chinese"...which should not be mistaken for or compared to traditional authentic Chinese food since they are very different. For American Chinese, the food is very good. Fresh, lots of sauce, cooked well (fluffy rice, perfectly tender veggies and tender meat), simple flavors. Many entrees come with a choice of spicy level. We tried the pu pu platter...the classic mix of crab Rangoon, chicken fingers, chicken wings, beef Teriyaki skewer and an egg roll. My family loved all of it. We also tried the mixed veggies in garlic sauce, beef & broccoli, and the pork loin main. It was all very good. I also like that they offer online ordering with the option to pay when you pick up. Pretty good American Chinese food. However the house special chow mein (mein is the mandarin word for noodle) had no noodles... the "very spicy" was not spicy at all, but I have also lived in one of the spiciest regions of China so I have an atypical tolerance for Maine where black pepper is considered spicy. The human beef was super tender and very good, the king pao chicken was pretty good, the double cooked pork was swimming in sauce so the pork had non of the crispy edges it should have. So bummed about my experience! My food was literally coming out as I got there, too, so not sure why it was so cold. The spring rolls were soggy and cold, and the tofu dish was undercooked, cold, flavorless and filled with mushrooms (which weren't even listed as being a part of the dish). The staff was apparently quite stressed when I picked up my order, I was never greeted, and the woman at the counter shouted "hold on!" when I walked up to her to pick up my food, and then raised her voice at me as she asked for payment because I handed her my card (they had a card reader on another table that I apparently didn't notice.) The quality of the food has deteriorated over the past few years. Last night was the last straw. I got take out and the food was cold. Not, gee, it cooled off before I got home, but they took it out of the fridge/freezer, chucked into the container, and sent me on my way. Even if they were busy, this is unacceptable. read more

This is our go to American Chinese food place since moving to the Portland area. My husband doesn't eat it so I take the kids when they ask. I saw Some bad recent reviews and decided to give you some good. The lunch specials are a bargain for Chinese food. Meal, appetizer and a soup. We all get the wonton soup with fresh fried crunch wontons. YUM. The kids like lo mein, fried rice and appetizers. Everything is always yummy and better than we tried around here. Never super greasy like some places. It just seems more fresh to me. During covid they are wiping doors between customers entering and exiting. As well as wearing masks. read more

Three stars for service, and mates meal. I got garlic chicken, off the lunch menu. Along with Won-Ton soup. The soup was great. Service was super. The garlic chicken to me was almost inedible, way way too much rice wine vinegar is my guess, resulting in a strong metallic taste. The chicken pieces seemed pre-chewed as well, a feeling in the mouth as if someone had already chewed it and passed it off. Yuk. My girlfriend got a #32 which was mostly a tiny poopoo platter, with an egg roll, she liked that dish fine. They do not honor the Yelp buy one get one for half for lunch BTW, only dinner. Hit or miss. This most recent visit was bad. General Tso's chicken were huge golf ball sized briquettes with very little stringy chicken and hard as a rock. Beef and Broccoli didn't have much beef either. They were OUT of boneless pork. The restaurant was empty on a Saturday night and the food took quite a while. Really good Chinese food. We ordered the wontons off the appetizer menu. Not what we expected with a peanut and chili sauce, but the kids devoured them. We also ordered broccoli beef, garlic chicken, orange chicken, fried rice, and vegi lo-mein. Yes all of that and there were two adults and 3 kids. We ate everything with the exception of one small scoop of the lo-mein. It was all delicious and reasonably priced. Wish we lived closer so we could become regulars. Very bad experience. Customer service was very bad, person taking my order was rude, and made me feel stupid. Literally laughed in my face when I asked to sub white rice with noodles. The positive was that they were open when nearly every restaurant was closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If you live in Maine you know that we suffer from a lack of quality easy in-and-out Chinese food options. So it was a low bar to get a decent score. Sadly, it does not rate very high. Got takeout this week and was so impressed with Panda Garden! As NYC transplants we long for great a Chinese food spot and this place was the best we have had since moving here. The Lo mein and appetizers were all delicious and well priced! All the accompanying sauces like the scallion soy (served with dumplings) and duck sauce tasted homemade. The fam was craving some good ol' American style Chinese. I've yet to find a decent place in Maine for this, but based on other reviews, and intriguing bean curd options we have it a go. First off the staff were super friendly, both on the phone and for pick up. This vegetarian crew ordered General Tso bean curd, orange Bean curd,broccoli with garlic sauce and veggie lo neon. First impressions are everything and I was very disappointed that for almost 60 bucks those to go containers were definitely not full. The portion sizes were very small. The two bean curd also had almost identical sauces, the flavors and texture of the tofu was good. But I could hardly distinguish the difference. Both lo mein and broccoli were "ok". Being Asian American and also a takeout aficionado, I cannot believe it's taken me so long to revisit and fall in love with Panda Garden! I blame it in fact I was a child and also, this might be only Chinese place I can think of that doesn't even offer delivery. But, whatever you decide dine-in OR pick-up, this place is worth it. Right on Brighton across from the Lowe's plaza et al., it's accessible with plenty of parking lot parking spots as well as some right in front for easy access for those popping in for take-out. If you decide to stay, I've been half a dozen times before posting this and have never had to wait to be seated. Additionally, regarding their EXEMPLARY service, I'm acknowledged immediately! This might seem like a funny thing to harp on, but I find it a rare and much appreciated thing to comment on. Now to the food/ price/ service size: If you're like me ordering Chinese can be an endeavor-- you always have way too much and feel kind of sick/ greasy after. Not here. Serving sizes are reasonable to share, but you do not feel like it's cheap or dosed in oil, etc. Food arrives fresh, quickly, and they keep water coming and are attentive! One of my best friends is a Panda Garden guru and taught me her favorites, now mine: Appetizers include, staple crab rangoon, take it or leave it - same with egg rolls, but don't miss out on fried meat dumplings and hot wonton in sesame sauce. I was disappointed in the crab ragoons, the chow mein, the sesame chicken, the egg rolls, the duck sauce....and then the fortune cookies had stupid fortunes such as "Pick a new fortune" and mine was printed weird and you couldn't even read it.
