It is pretty difficult to serve lousy food but you've won! The chicken fingers were basically heavily breaded and stale while the wontons were also made with a heavy hand. The key is not to destroy the dish with bread. Basically it was almost unedible. I never got the soda I paid for and the delivery guy just doesn't understand directions too well. I know these are difficult times but I wouldn't pay more than 4 bucks for the noodles. You guys better get a chef fast. read more

I had such high hopes, but equally high concerns about a drive thru chinese place... Setup/style: basically says " we wish we were as good as panda garden..." int has tables and the same buffet line style of food selection. A bowl, plate or large plate plus "family size" options in the $32+ range. Drive thru: SHAMBLES. I am certain the kid at the computer was 12 years old if he was a day. (Illegal age I'm almost positive..) plus the lady had ZERO CLUE how to use a drive thru mic. Soon as got to the window, which is too high for any car NOT a truck, she complains how a) the computers don't work, b )they are "slammed" and "ran out of food so we are making it fresh...that's a good thing!" A line quickly formed and the boy came out to take orders on a sheet of paper cuz the speaker had been abandoned apparently. Also, I did 7 years in food service, i know fresh food is a good thing...thanks. plus, it was 2 hrs after they opened on their FIRST day. How are you OUT of food?? Food: go to panda garden instead. The "fried rice" is just white with frozen veg. The crab rangoon were obviously a frozen item which they fried. The orange chicken was overly sweet rocks. The green beans were basically NOT cooked. Also, the order of kung pao chicken had...almost no chicken!! Why tell us you were making fresh food and then NOT serve it to paying customers?? Exactly what you would expect: Quick and easy Americanized Chinese food. Reminded me a lot of the Chinese buffet place that closed over by the Maine Mall. The food was hot and tasted good. Not one item in our order was even close to good. The fried rice was dark brown and tasteless as were all the appetizers. The chicken teriyaki on a stick was hard and as tasteless as everything else. I have been looking for a decent fast-food type Chinese take out place for YEARS. We had one in the area that closed years ago, and nothing has ever replaced it. So...when driving past the newly opened China Express around lunch time, I turned right in! Honestly, I was also motivated by their mention of a "drive through". I have been wishing for more local businesses to offer drive through service for years as well, especially when we are experiencing winter days hovering around 10 degrees. Anyway, the interior was comfortable, nice and new. The menu was pretty limited, but that is understandable since they just opened. My husband and I ordered two specials; one with white rice and chicken and broccoli and the other with lomein and chicken with string beans. We also added a side order of chicken fingers, which are one of my baseline go-tos when trying a new Chinese take out place. The two lunch specials, were on the smaller side, which didn't end up mattering because the food overall was really greasy (this is coming from a person who sometimes seeks out greasy food)! My chicken and string bean was just ok, a small serving with about five small pieces of chicken. Even after that, my mind was still open, hoping that the chicken fingers would be a YES! And...they were really, really greasy as well. Ugh! With all of this said, I still really want China Xpress to thrive! I hope over time they will put more time and intention into their offerings. Also, just a suggestion, but maybe offer a few specialty items, like roast pork bao. I know several people who would drive through regularly for bags of roast pork buns! This restaurant is just what South Portland needed! With a modern look, and very friendly staff, you can't get better food. The food portions are incredibly large, and fresh! Pros: This place has everything you need! Warm staff, Fresh hot food, and big portions and exceptional prices!! The set up is a display on various options of food presented on a heated wok, which are continuously exchanged and switched out for fresh food. Cons: drive through was not operational and not blocked off so some customers were sitting in front of the drive monitor, repeating the words of "hello?" . Conclusion: I was able to get a 3 entree 1 side meal for the total of $9.12 (tax included). Portions were large and the food was hot and decent, chicken and broccoli was well flavored and the broccoli was crunchy, orange chicken was crispy and sauce wasn't over wheezing and the pan fried dumpling seemed like it was made In house. For the prices that were presented the food quality was better than some restaurants that would charge double. Of course there are some things that this new restaurant needs to work on but this is all a learning process. Give credit where credit is earned. Reading some of the previous reviews, I'm not sure we all ate at the same place. I ate in and did not try the drive thru. I do agree the menu is very similar to the setup of Panda Express however their food does have a different style than Panda Express. I found everything hot, fresh, and tasty. I just want to say the food is very delicious and fresh. The restaurant is very clean. We spent about $18 for two #3 combo meals. The portion was good. We tried the Lo Mein(much better than other places), the fried rice(not dry at all), orange chicken(just the right amount of sweetness, sourness, & crunchiness), crab Rangoon(the best I've tried so far), chicken fingers(very crunchy, love them with duck sauce), chicken with broccoli(chicken was tender & broccoli was not over cooked), dumplings(you should definitely try it with their homemade dumpling sauce), and lastly, spring roll(also homemade, very tasty). So, as you can see, for $18, we got quite a lot of food. Both me and my friend each had a very full meal. My review for chinaxpress is: great portion, excellent service, yummy food, very reasonable prices (as compared to other Chinese restaurant where maybe just a lo mein alone would cost you around $10), variety(you can get a little bit of everything for one low price), and the MOST impressive aspect of how chinaxpress differ from other Chinese restaurant is, quick service. Everything is already freshly made and you just have to pick what you like and you are on your way. I really like this style of restaurant. We visited on opening day, and it's true that the restaurant was so unexpectedly busy that the food was a bit underwhelming. They served us quickly nonetheless, and we could tell it wasn't a fair representation of the food. We went back today to try again and were so happy we did. It's the best fast food Chinese I have had in this area. Our family of four enjoyed the Lo Mein, Fried Rice, Crab Rangoons, and Orange Chicken. We had two days worth of leftovers. I hope that everyone who visited on that first day will try this place again. We will definitely be going there more often. read more

I would give this zero stars if I could. It was inedible. I had hoped for something good here. This Literally left a bad taste in my mouth. I asked for my money back ($9.19) and the staff was very pleasant when returning my money. I rarely like to try new Chinese food places because it is so hard to find them and when you do they let you down, but I would say that I got the courage to try it one more time and I found this place still I was hesitate but I ordered the crabragoon orange chicken and lomein and wow was i impressed. Esp the crabragoon boy was i risking it then but bam they were made exactly how they were suppose to be. i can say i have my new favorite chinese place great food great prices cant go wrong but I would just tell them to put more orange chicken next time. read more

I leave 2 stars only because the staff was super friendly otherwise I'd give a 1. I wanted to leave as soon as I saw the food inside but didn't, and I regret it. I ordered some rice with my Chinese favorite chicken fingers. Rice was boring, fingers were stale. My wife ordered crab Rangoon also said they were stale and she said she didn't like the rice. I payed 18 or so plus tip to be kind to the nice staff. But I will not be coming back. I have yet to finish my food at home and I just want to throw it in the trash. Sounds harsh.. but for the same money, I could have bought food from other suppliers and it which would have given me far more and far fresh for the price. read more

Honestly? This place is pretty middle-of-the-road, but compared to other Chinese food I've had since I moved to Portland, the fact that it's edible and something I'd eat again is a triumph. They JUST opened on 8/10/19 so I forgive any hiccups as they get the business running. Yes, the business model is similar to a Panda Express type place, but I don't see a problem with that. The staff were all incredibly kind and helpful and excited despite being slammed when we went in. My partner and I went on opening day and ordered a medium combo and a large combo. We tried the lo mien, the fried rice, the dumplings, the honey chicken, the orange chicken, the shrimp, the peppersteak, and the kung pao. We got a fountain soda and a bottled soda, and they have a wide selection of both types of drinks. The lo mien and fried rice are both pretty bland, but I solved that problem myself by adding my leftover dumpling sauce to them. The dumpling filling was great, and the dumpling dipping sauce is delicious, but the dumplings are kind of clumsily folded and the wrappers are a little thick. The honey chicken and kung pao were fine. The orange chicken, shrimp, and peppersteak were good, with the peppersteak having an exceptionally good sauce. There were very few vegetable options, but I expect their menu will change and expand in the coming months. I also didn't think the prices were too bad; as you can see, we ordered a lot of food and two drinks and the total was only $24. read more

My mother is stopped on her way to my house and picked up crab rangoons and spring rolls. The crab rangoons had a very strange flavor and aftertaste and we're clearly if frozen item popped in a deep fryer. The spring rolls were horrible, but I have no idea what was in them and they also had a strange aftertaste. All in all, I can't imagine I'll be back to this new restaurant. read more

This place is a small Chinese drive thru service (they may have had indoor sitting before the Corona virus, I just didn't discover them before) It has a small menu to make the quick service possible. I've had hit or miss days for the orange chicken. Sometimes it's very fresh and covered in sauce and the best I've had in Maine. Other times it's dry. The chicken and broccoli is the real star. Added their own 20% tip without authorization. Asked at window "do you want a receipt?" I previously had always declined. My husband said yes. Have been wanting to try this restaurant since they opened. Very excited to have something fresh and quick on those nights I didn't want to cook. Didn't disappoint, staff were extremely friendly! Food was hot, tasty, not too salty which I do sometimes find with Chinese food and looked like it had just been prepared. I do agree with one of the other posters and wish there had been more options. Will definitely go back!! read more
