I've always had excellent experiences here, and make a point to drive the extra twenty minutes rather than suffer through my more local Chinese restaurants. Everyone that works here is engaging and friendly, and it's legitimately superior Chinese food--super fresh and high quality ingredients. I'm a bit of a beef lo mein aficionado and theirs is the best I've ever had. Cocktails are fantastic too! Chinese food in Vermont? Usually not very good but Panda North is up to the task.

In this review: food poisoning!!! There were many things that bothered my husband and me about this restaurant and we discussed it in the car afterwards. This was before I got FOOD POISONING!!!! That should be reason enough for you to never go there. It is nearly a week later and digestive problems still remain from this vial food. I have no idea how it is possible that they have a 4 star average on Yelp as the service is not only terrible but mean and rude, the food is disgusting, and the restaurant is dirty and falling apart. Service: Somehow, the restaurant was packed, which I don't understand in the slightest. The waitress, who was likely an owner of some kind, gave us very little time to decide on our meals before getting impatient and then snapped at my husband when he asked if it was possible to have fried rice instead of white with his meal. At the end of the meal, I gave my credit card and she returned it to the table, placed it under my husband's nose, and was pushy about his going to sign it. Even if it had been his card, it was extremely rude to not wait 5 seconds for us to sign the receipt in private. Food: My chicken with string beans and ginger sauce must have had an entire ginger root on it. Besides the fact that it gave me food poisoning, the flavor was completely overpowering. My husband's beef was extremely salty. Honestly, I would get over bad food easily if it wasn't for sickness and an extremely terrible experience overall. Cleanliness: The place was dingy and the bathroom was extremely dirty. Decor doesn't usually bother me, especially if the rest of the experience is good. But, I don't want to imagine what the kitchen looked like, given what I saw in the bathroom and the sickness I had later. Do not ever go here. Do not let the large amount of cars in the parking lot sway your decision. End of story. read more

After eating at Panda North weekly for the last 4 years tonight I observed one of the waiters use the urinal and walk directly back into the dining room and return to waiting on customers. He made no attempt to wash his hands even though the sign next to the sink clearly stated it was Vermont State Law for him to do so. We won't be going back... read more

Panda North was a Chinese restaurant we stopped along the way before reaching Stowe, VT from NYC. My wife and I usually never eat Chinese food but we were desperate for somthing in our body before we continued through our journey. Of course we turned to our head restaurant guide, Mr. Yelp, and took a chance on Panda North. 2 thumps up to Mr. Yelp once again. Ok lets get to business. Place was a huge palace like establishment which gave me flash backs of China. Their menu was freaking huge which did not limit to just Chinese. They also served Sushi which we passed on. I have been going to Panda North for well over 20 years- first as a student at SIT and then whenever I was in the area. But, I think I just had my last meal there. I always get the House Special Sesame Chicken. It's usually large chunks of white meat in a sticky sweet sauce sprinkled with sesame seeds. Today, we got weird pieces of dark meat (no sesame seeds) that weren't cooked well at all. I got sick within 30 minutes of eating there. First of all, I'm Chinese. I've been eating "real" Chinese food for over two decades. Panda North is, basically, the best Chinese food in the area. It's not "real" Chinese food, but it's close enough and it's actually pretty decent in its Chinese-American way. Their Japanese menu is pretty good and it's really what I order from the most. They use fresh fish in their sushi---I heard from the manager that they get fish thrice a week---and they certainly have the best sushi in the area. The only sushi I've had in VT that was better was in Burlington. The prices are reasonable but a little higher than I'd like. The service is really good too. We got a very clumsy waiter once but it was his first night or something like that and it was kind of adorable. Other than that they have been really friendly and nice. With maybe the exception of Panda East in Amherst, MA this is the best Panda-named Chinese/Japanese place out there. (There are like five of them and they all have identical menus, etc.) So, bottom line: not amazing, but if you live in the area and want anything better in the Japanese/Chinese veins you'll need to drive an hour south. I've recently moved to the area, and all I can guess is that the locals love this place because they don't know any better. Last time I went to eat in, my chair was filthy and sticky. Service is good, but the prices are a bit high for the low quality food- especially the sushi. I will say that the sesame chicken is good, and the beef and broccoli seems fresh. Okay, so I'm lazy and tend to get take-out from Panda North on a pretty regular basis ... but that's also because they're consistently awesome! For some reason, Brattleboro has (it seems) an unusually large number of pizza restaurants and Chinese restaurants for a town this size, but there is no reason whatsoever to visit any of the other Chinese restaurants ... PN is it. The food is always rather tasty, but what makes it particularly nice for me is that they're willing to make just about anything - I usually get the General Tso's Chicken, subbing tofu, so that's sort of-not really on the menu, but I've also asked for dishes not even on the menu and they don't blink an eye. Can I please have Chow Mei Fun with tofu and veggies instead of pork and chicken? Sure. Thank you! And on and on ... Also, they've got a good Japanese menu, too, which what I try to order from when I'm being healthy :) They make great sushi, with several veggie versions (also the best sushi in Bratt!), and are willing to make kinds not on the menu ... plus good, good veggie yaki udon, which I love! So, go to Panda North. Or get take-out. I keep meaning to go eat INSIDE, and apparently they make some pretty fun cocktails, but I'm lazy ... on of these days. But go - very good! read more

I wish you could have seen how happy I was after my meal at Panda North. My husband and I were exploring VT/NH/ME and had just checked into our hotel in Brattleboro at about 9pm. We were starving and asked the front desk if there was anything reasonably decent in the area that would be open late. They sent us here where we were greeted by an entire team of waiters-- the place was empty and obviously about to close but they didn't frown or make us feel bad about it like most places would have. The food was way better than we ever would have expected. Maybe we are just jaded New Yorkers, but the food was better here than many places we frequent in the City. Like Asian food? Eat here! What a nice surprise! I expected mediocre "ok" Chinese since it is a sit down restaurant with tablecloths. I was SO happy with their cold sesame noodles ( I asked for them spicy) fresh, crisp flavor, sesame sauce carried nuances of fresh ginger, rice vinegar, hot oil. Really yummy. I was really skeptical about this Asian restaurant because my first thought was this must be another really greasy and oily Chinese food. I heard how great their food is but never actually tried it until my visit to Vermont this past weekend. This place is located next to a sketchy motel next door, but don't judge the area! We came in with four people- we were greeted immediately by this young lady at the front desk. We ordered spicy wonton dumpings, crab rangoons, and terikayi sticks for appetizers. For entrees, we shared two plates of sasame chicken and another plate called "happy family" it has literally everything in one plate: chicken,mushrooms, baby corn, beef etc We also couldn't help but notice the smell of other people's dishes! We went here for dinner on an overnight getaway to Brattleboro. After hitting the bars downtown, we quickly realized that there was no restaurants opened in that area at 9:30pm (but it was a Sunday). The hotel referred us to Panda North. (She said it was her favorite Chinese restaurant in Vermont.) We ordered a few rolls of sushi (including a couple of house specials) and they were very good. We also got this chicken dish that I've never seen before (no, it wasn't General Gau's/Tso's). I think it was called "chicken amazing" or something.... and yes, it was amazing! I love, love, love Panda North! The interior is nothing special...typical carpeting, various chinese lanterns, etc. But what they do well is what you come here for...and that's the food. Panda North has the best lo mein I've ever had. It doesn't get any better for me and I've tried Chinese down the east coast and back. I still can't find a lo mein I can call better...or that even comes close, for that matter! Also - the best scallion pancakes and some of the greatest crab rangoon. In the last few years, they added a sushi bar to the mix and now, in addition to all the American-Chinese awesomeness there is Japanese awesomeness, too. The miso soup is delicious. Sadly, they do no deliver, but take-out is available and totally worth driving up to Exit 3 to grab it. The service - is incredible. I don't want to say they were RACIST but we were the only table full with people of color and we were there for 1hr and 40mins (2 entrees, 1 hand roll and an app) and we were only seen by our waiter 3 times while he served and cleared several tables that showed up long after us. I have never had bad duck before and this taste more like day old chicken. Vermont Chinese food! I am blown away. I just had some of the best Chinese food I have ever had. Very nice atmosphere friendly staff spotless Lee clean. My only regret is that I don't live closer to this restaurant. The crispy duck roll as an appetizer was amazing. I then had a duck over mixed green vegetables that was phenomenal. I highly recommend this restaurant. Huge portions. In business travel I hate to waste food so the leftovers are going with me. The Rangoon were practically raw, the House Chicken was very good and the Tangerine chicken was so horrible it was inedible. Went based on Yelp reviews and because it was right off the highway of a major town as we were passing through around dinner time. Service was good considering our waitress was slammed with 4-5 tables sat almost all at the same time and one one was an 8-top. Menu is monumental and split Chinese/ Japanese (including sushi). The Chinese and Japanese kitchen food was extremely bland but the sushi from the sushi bar (dragon roll) was pretty good! If we go again we'll only order sushi. The food: Ordered two apps- Crab Rangoon - not very good, nice construction, fried ok but the filling was off- lumpy and flavorless. Perhaps it was made from frozen? Shrimp Balls - unreal serving size, 4- HUGE deep-fried, heavily breaded, hot as hell shrimp flavored jiggly stuff (very dim-sum) had loads of texture character, but lacked any depth and flavor. Dragon Roll- we almost always order this when it is on a menu. Quite a well executed rendition and easily the highlight of the meal. The unagi that topped it could have been braised a bit more, but it was cooked through and was good. Chicken Teriyaki came out so late we just took it to go (we were driving through on the road.) my wife ate it the next day heated it up and said it was the blandest thing she'd ever eaten. Perhaps this place caters to the locals who like mild flavors (this seems to be largely the case in this area of the country), but for out-of-towners with more diversely exposed pallets it was quite a let down. read more

Had lunch here today based on a chef friend's recommendation. After looking at Yelp reviews I tried the Chicken Amazing and was glad I did. Egg rolls were terrific as well. Service was great and the restaurant was neat. The parking lot was full when we got there mid-afternoon on a Sunday. There was a plumbing glitch in the bathroom and my husband got squirted with water. The staff was very apologetic and gave us a gift certificate for a meal. We will definitely go back as the food was well worth the trip and better than any that we have found in the Monadnock region. Panda north is the best Chinese restaurant I have ever been to outside of a major city's Chinatown. They have an extensive menu that features both traditional Chinese and Japanese dishes and classically decadent american Chinese food. Some of the food highlights are: Tangerine shrimp- some of the biggest best tasting shrimp I have ever had, very lightly battered in a tangy sauce House special chicken- like general Tso's chicken but spicier and better Szechuan dumpling: excellent steamed pork dumplings in a rich and spicy (not sweet) peanut sauce All of the sushi- generous portions of fish and much fresher then expected this far from the coast. Not the best ever but above average. Variations on Vegetables in garlic sauce- not overly sauced and gloopy like the vegetables at many american Chinese restaurants.
