Why am I writing a review about Panera Bread? A place that you can find on amost any corner of VA and sprinkled throughout the rest of DC metro like CVS, Mcdonalds and Starbucks. Well fist of all I love this joint. But I had a bad experience the other day. Not to worry though, because it actually turned into something good. Would you like to hear about it? Here it goes: So there I was, it was morning. I was feeling a little hungry and needed a little something to pick me up before I drove to work. The sweet fresh smell of the bagels, muffins, and bread cast a spell over me and I instantly began to forget the @$$-raping that I had just received from the Acura service department accross the street. I get in line. I'm greeted warmly by this older lady behind the counter. "Can I help you? What would you like" she said all pleasant. "Orange juice and asiago bagel for my lady and I want a cafe mocha and a jalepeno bagel with egg and bacon sandwich." She repeated my order back to me and gave me one of those lite-brite looking pagers and a receipt. We relaxed by the fireplace for a few minutes and then the lite-brite went off. When I got to the counter, there was a white plate covered with giant yellow wax paper with a sandwich resting on top. I looked at it and could see the sausage patty protruding from the sides. SAUSAGE PATTY???? THAT'S NOT WHAT I ORDERED!!! The Latina girl making the sandwiches was confused "Thas notchos?" I replied "no, that's not mine". 'SAUSAGE on Jalepeno bagel wis egg and sheez?" She retorted. "NO" I said again. I went back to my table and grabbed my receipt. "Jalepeno bagel with egg and SAUSAGE". Dammit how did this happen??? The cashier repeated my order back to me see saying "blah blah blah...with BACON". HOW? HOW? HOW? GRRRRRR! My world was crumbling. All of a sudden the guys at the Acura dealership from accross the street were in my head pointing and laughing at me making gestures with their butts signifying that once again, I had been @$$-raped. I made the walk of shame back to the pick up area and grabbed my plate, saying nothing to the Latina sandwich girl. Then I picked up the bagel order for my woman on the other side. I motioned to the cashier that my order was wrong. She said, "oh, let me fix it" and I said "no no, it's okay, it's already made" and took it back to my table and started chomping on it. I was actually just as good as it would be with bacon. But in my head, I couldn't get over how that's not what I had ordered. A few minutes later as I was halfway through the sandwich, the cashier lady drops a plate in front of me with a fresh off the panini press Jalepeno bagel with egg, cheese and bacon sandwich. She said she was very sorry and hoped that this would make up for it. GODDAMMIT....It did. I told her she didn't have to do that and she replied "But then you wouldn't be happy". Ignoring the fact that Panera is really faux-"healthy" food, I don't understand the hype of this chain. This is the location closest to me and I only dare eat here in a pinch. Several months ago, I got the turkey avocado BLT (which I had gotten before). Even typing it nauseates me. This is because either I had a very coincidental flu bug that kicked in the same night I ate it, or I got food poisoning. The lack of a fever points to the latter. As you can imagine, I can't even smell that sandwich again without feeling the urge to go face deep in a toilet. This past week I finally returned, as our options were limited and my wife still likes the place. I went with something totally different to avoid sensory induced illness and got the pasta. As my picture indicates, it's a terrible choice. For a whopping $8.49 they give you about 2 dozen noodles. At any italian restaurant, this is considered a side of pasta for your meat-based entree. Nope, here at Panera, this is the main course. Extra insulting is that they showed me the size of the container beforehand, then proceeded to fill it 1/4 of the way. What in the world? I can't help but feel like I was really cheated out of my money, and the pasta wasn't exactly fresh made either (what at panera is? answer: nothing). All in all this location will never see me again, and I hope to never step foot in a panera nationwide again. But save yourself some money and don't get the pasta. Enjoy your flavorless salads, white meat that they clearly add cosmetic grill marks to, or paninis so fresh that they can't 86 ingredients because "that's how they come." A red-flag, a restaurant no-no, is a dirty bathroom. Do not confuse new dirt with old funkiness. If the bathroom lacks cleanliness, what the hell is going on in the kitchen? Bailey's Crossroads is notoriously busy and a steady stream of people flow through the shops on a weekly basis. When I arrived on a Saturday afternoon, the lunch crowd had already vacated and things were slow. The tables, floors and all public areas obviously hadn't been tended to and funk-aura permeated all public spaces here. The Mediterranean Veggie sandwich was paid for prior to inspection of the facilities. It was pretty disconcerting to see a mangled pickle on my plate after inspecting such filthy conditions. Not sure how but this place is packed at all hours. We usually order to go which is faster and you just go in and pick up your order. We have dined here a few times and you have to keep watch out for tables leaving to get a space. Workers are usually efficient and nice. I get the you pick two option and enjoy their thai salad and tomato soup. My wife likes the clam chowder or chicken and rice soup and their chicken frontega sandwich. Stopped for lunch during crazy Saturday shopping; the place was packed but the line moved quickly. The register guy was patient and good at his suggestive selling. The couple I was with love Panera and specifically requested this for lunch. The food was good and I am now a convert. The lunch options of half of 2 different things is perfect for the indecisive. I will always have a place in my heart for Panera. Breakfast is a tried and true favorite. The soufflés are great, with crunchy flaky crust and soft eggy insides. Today I tried the butternut squash ravioli for lunch. The portion was not as big as expected, but the flavor was good. The order came with 9 ravioli (I counted) and was topped with arugula and fried onions. Those onions added a lil something that kicked it up a notch. It's a busy place with your "Starbucks" type customers who sit at the tables to use the wifi. It's also not always the cleanest. But that's to be expected with the "squatters". For reference ordered the you pick two: Greek salad and broccoli cheddar soup, with a side or baguette bread, and a hazelnut coffee. I came in late afternoon on a Saturday and this place was pretty busy! We waited in line about a couple minutes and we called up to place out order. I was taking my father out for lunch and my dad doesn't eat at Panera often so he didn't really understand how the you pick two worked (don't judge! haha). After my dad placed his order I placed mine and asked her to repeat it. My dad ordered two half sandwiches! I asked my dad if that was what he wanted and he said no. So at this point I know we are holding up the line and the cashier is being completely patient with us. She was great. I straightened out my dads order to make sure he understood how the you pick two worked (he got 1/2 sandwich and chicken noodle) and since she saw it was packed and we didn't have a table she said she would have to make it to go. I asked her to please make it fr here since we were only two and we would quickly find a table. Service was great! 5/5 Food came 5 minutes later or so, I poured my coffee and sat back down, once ,y dad finished pouring his the buzzer was already ringing for our meal. I feel like for situations like that there should be couches or bars to make tables available for people to sit down and enjoy their meals, but that's just me. Experience was a 4/5 just because it was so busy. I would recommend this location when it is NOT peak hour, just because it gets so hard to find a place to sit. I like Panerna b/c they bake their goods fresh unlike Starbucks where their stuff is trucked in. This location is very busy and you could actually get hit by a car crossing from the parking lot. This is the filthiest Panera I have ever encountered. Customers slosh their cups about and the staff seems to ignore the spills. The staff acted as though I was bothering them by placing an order. I said hello and was greeted with a look as if to say, "What do you want now?" Ummm...this is my first time at this Panera. What is with the attitude? I ordered off the menu, nothing special at all. I said please and thank you while smiling. The tongs to get the teabags was covered in honey. I asked the guy wiping down the counter with a very suspicious looking rag if he could swap the tongs out for a clean one and he looked at it like there was nothing wrong with it before sighing and saying ok. I have absolutely nothing nice to say about this Panera. I've never received the greatest customer service at this particular Panera, but after today, I am done and will be going to the one on Duke Street instead. I stood in "line" (i.e.-- I was the only one standing there aside from the woman in front of me whom was giving the cashier her order) for about a minute and a half and watched another employee standing at another cashier station look at me and continue to talk to one of the employees. He finally raised his hand and called me over. I specifically asked for a whole salad and a soup (I specified "whole"). He says "do you want the You Pick Two?" I've been asked that before and I was under the impression that although it would be more food than the You Pick Two (the half and half), I would get some sort of discount for ordering both of these items. If I didn't, I didn't care.... I didn't ever expect to. However, after I said "sure", the employee snapped and said "You cant DO the You Pick Two with a whole salad" very rudely. Okay.... well why bring it up when I clearly stated that I wanted a whole salad? I said that that was fine, and that I wanted a whole salad. He looked at me like I was crazy and repeated my order back to me slowly like I was the 'tard. Didn't ask if I wanted chips, apple or bread. Just told me my total. I paid and walked away-- but checked out his nametag before hand. Huh. "Manager". Awesome. When my order came, some guy standing at the corner grabbed my bag and stood there. I assumed he was some customer, so I said "I'm sorry, is that mine?" (because they called my name and I knew it was....). He says "yeah" rudley, doesn't even look at me, and shoves the bag towards me. I said thank you, snatched it, and walked away. I don't know what was up everyone's *** today, but from a customer service standpoint, it was unacceptable. I am a manager in the customer service field, so believe me, I KNOW the customer is not always right. How does someone mess up an order for cold brew coffee? My husband and I aren't terribly demanding but we waited and waited and then when we asked at the pick-up station they didn't have our order. Also, my husband wanted large but they were out of large cups. Maybe the cashier was new? Maybe he was tired? Anyway, the coffee tasted like it had been sitting around all day. Don't just check the receipt to ensure it reflects your order. It likely will. Nevertheless, check inside the bag to ensure everything is as you ordered it. Yes, unwrap those sandwiches to check that they reflect your customizations.
