I got the Five Spice Tofu: the tofu itself was SO flavorful, loved the sweetness from the radish & carrot plus the bite from the jalapeños, the creamy aioli was delicious too. Stopped by while in the Eden Center - this little cafe/restaurant is tucked around the corner past the tofu place that is always packed. So glad that we decided to check it out because DANG this banh mi is good. I wouldn't even consider myself a banh mi fanatic but maybe it's because I haven't had good banh mi like this! I got myself the Nem Nuong (pork sausage) and David the Signature (pork belly, ham, bologna) to go. They offered to put the veggies (cucumber, radish/carrot, jalapeno, cilantro) on the side which I did. While I didn't try the Signature, David said it was the best banh mi he's had in the DMV and it reminded him of his hometown near Little Saigon, Orange County CA. The Nem Nuong was amazing, highly recommend. The pork sausage was so flavorful and the side of scallion fish sauce oil that they gave on the side really mixed well with the flavors. My only critique is that I wish they didn't chop the sausage into huge chunks but made them more flat so that it would distribute more evenly in the sandwich. THE BREAD. Can we have a moment for the bread. Perfectly crunchy and flaky when you bite down, yet cloud-like and super soft on the inside. So sad that I didn't get more because there were definitely others that I wanted to try. I'm happy to say I was completely wrong. The bread is baked fresh and has the perfect crisp exterior with a soft interior. We usually rotate between the signature bánh mì, pâté, and steamed pork, and they've all been consistently excellent. Pair one with their crème coffee or matcha latte, and it's an easy lunch. It's become our go-to spot, and I've brought sandwiches back to the office for coworkers more times than I can count. Everyone has been impressed. The only downside is the parking at Eden Center, which can be frustrating. Thankfully, pickup is quick and well organized once you make it there. To taste a variety, I ordered their signature, hot chicken, grilled chicken, and five spiced tofu. Also got the egg latte. My favorite, though unconventional, was the nashville hot chicken. Just so much explosion in your mouth. The spice was perfect, spicy but not blowing your tongue off. The menu is quite humorous, you've got all these Asian flavors and then throws in the nashville hot but I'm all for it. The signature and grilled chicken were good too, really if that's what you're craving, you won't be disappointed but I'm also not going to elaborate on them. The tofu was interesting. I really enjoyed the five spiced flavor on the tofu. However, when taking a bite of the whole sandwich, I was searching for more of that five spiced flavor. I looked at the sandwich and to my surprise, the block of tofu is actually quite substantial. People there are really nice and helpful but is a small space. Comparisons with the OG Banh Mi DC a stone's throw away are both inevitable and useful to decide which business you want to patronize. Both shops have their strengths and weaknesses. Oi's freshly baked bread really stands out. The baguettes are shatteringly crisp while maintaining a very soft, satiny interior. The bread here hits all the high notes of a proper Vietnamese baguette, and outshines DC's slightly chewier and heavier loaves. For traditional fillings, I give the slight edge to DC. While Oi offers better meat quality, the seasonings are not as strong. Similarly, though the veggies are fresh and generously portioned at Oi, I prefer a more picked taste. Finally, the mayo and pâté also possess less umami flavor than what I've had at Banh Mi DC. That being said, Oi does offer a Nashville hot chicken banh mi that's one of the best things I've eaten in recent memory. The sandwich was stuffed generously with crunchy chicken tenders that retained a crisp coating even after a 30 minute drive home. The chili oil balances pure heat with warm spices and a slight tang. This specific banh mi packs a ton of flavor and is alone worth a visit. Banh Mi Oi is also a couple bucks more expensive per sandwich than DC, though portions are subsequently bigger. They also offer a decent amount of indoor seating on the second level that evokes a Vietnamese street (low slung plastic stools and all), whereas most other places are takeout only or have bare bones ambiance. Initially, I made use of the BOGO deal on UberEats for the Bánh Mì Pork Meatball, and coincidentally, I went to an event later that week catered dinner from Banh Mi Oi. This is my first visit to Banh Mi Oi, a recent addition to Eden Center. Since visiting Vietnam, my bar was set pretty high for bánh mì. I know some places simply microwave the meat/sandwich, but not Banh Mi Oi!! It was a little tough to find, but once we did, they did not disappoint. I regret not trying the Vietnamese coffee, but I already had too much coffee. There were some tables and chairs in the main level, and authentic type seating upstairs, which definitely was reminiscent of eating bánh mì in Vietnam. The bikes, hats and fans added a nice cultural touch; there were also mugs ($9.99 each) and totes for sale with clever sayings. Customer service was basic, she answered our questions but it was mostly just place your order, pick up and move on. They take a while with the orders, but most likely because they are actually cooking/cooked the food vs. microwaving. Unfortunately, they must have been understaffed because there was so much trash piled up in the garbage can upstairs and just left laying around. Bánh Mì Ơi actually has a couple of locations in MA (Roxbury and Waltham), and their 'recent' one opened up in Eden Center. Their menu is pretty simple, offering various banh mis with different proteins and Vietnamese coffee. We stopped by for an earlier lunch pickup, ordering: +the Grilled Chicken (ga nuong) banh mi +the Lemongrass Steak (bo sa) banh mi +Egg Coffee (ca phe kem trung) +and, the Pandan Coffee (ca phe kem dua) The banh mis come in a toasted baguette with aioli, cucumbers, fresh jalapenos, and pickled carrots/daikon; I opted out of cilantro for mine. While the banh mi itself was large in size, there could have been more meat - my chicken had about 2 dark meat chunks, which was marinated, but didn't have the 'char/grilled' taste to it that others have mentioned. Bread makes a mess, and was soft. The banh mis are not fully wrapped; you'll see the sides peeking through, so just be aware of this. The coffee was strong and made well. They have some outdoor and indoor/upstairs seating, but note that it's limited, and the tables provided are like kid play tables with extremely short chairs - just know you'll basically be squatting while you eat. Staff are pretty friendly and efficient; note to keep your numbered ticket, as they will collect it from you when you pick up your 'final' item to keep track.
