Went on a Thursday night happy hour-ish and was pleasantly surprised by the unique decor and ambiance of this place. The seating is cozy lounge style but we sat at the bar and ordered appetizers and wine. I had the sizzling garlic shrimp which comes with crusty bread to dip in the flavored butter. Paired with the house chardonnay - I've been craving it ever since. Apparently there is a cabaret show in the back room which was sold out and the bar became more crowded after it let out. The crowd was a nice mixture of people in their 30-40's. We chatted with friendly neighborhood locals and charming bartendress Begga was more than enough entertainment for us. Maybe only downside is they don't have any beers on tap, but they do have unique cocktails I intend to go back and try. read more

I want into this restaurant last night and noticed how gritty the table was. I took my napkin and wiped it down. To my horror the napkin was black with dirt and soot. When I brought the waiters attention to the filth he gave the table a quick wipe and made a lot of nasty and rude excuses for the disgusting dirt. That is no way to treat a returning customer. Not the best brunch I've had, but for $12 you can get a mimosa or bloody mary, coffee, and some kind of eggy thing. Me, I had eggs florentine, which were a little undercooked. But their roasted potatoes are the bomb, that's a fact. I was almost too hungover to function (New Years Day) at the time of said eggy thing, as was our server. The place was filled with half-inflated balloons, which is a little too reminiscent of clowns for my taste, as some of you may know. I enjoyed the service very much, though it was incredibly slow, mostly because this guy was definitely working with about two hours of sleep, I'm guessing? Those empanadas really kicked tail (can you tell I just watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Can you? Huh? eh ra.....) Oftentimes, owners of restaurants and bars are basically the happiest looking people when they welcome in a group of customers. The man who owns Pangea is practically on fire with joy. That is already a great thing to behold, and I wish I saw it more often, people who make it their livelihood to serve up food and drink and merriment always out in front greeting and such. It's an easy way of connecting with customers beyond the menu and waitstaff who for the most part won't necessarily be there forever. I enjoyed the Pangea, a simple drink basically consisting of tequila, triple sec, and pomegranate juice, and some lemon to cut the sweetness. It's antioxidants, alcohol, and fruity simplicity. I was not a huge fan of the caipirinha; it had a quick burn and then faded into a kind of rubber combined with sugar aftertaste. Watered down it was a bit better, but after a few 6 dollar beers, I was getting there. They have plenty of tequilas to ham it up with, I do like Corazon a lot. Probably too much. What I liked about the place was even though it was a restaurant, they have a prominent bar section with comfortable couches toward the front. I went here yesterday with a meetup group before going to the movies. I had an arugala salad, rigatoni and chocolate truffle cake for dessert, also a glass of malbec wine. All of it was very good. This place is the absolute worst. The bartender lost my debit card behind the bar somewhere. I was visibly annoyed and he suggested that I just "cancel the card". I'm sorry, what? Why should I have to inconvenience myself because the bartender is irresponsible? My friend and I randomly walked in for an early dinner. There was a bday party gathering in the back room which might have explained the service being completely non-existent. Majority of the time was spent waiting for our food. At one point I noticed that ALL of the tables were also foodless with no waitstaff to be found anywhere. After watching two tables, seated after us, receive their food we asked our waiter when ours would be coming out. His explanation that they were waiting for us to finish our appetizer was unfounded...were we suppose to lick the plate clean in order to receive our dinner? Food was mediocre. Confused and rude is not a winning combination. I recently attended a show in the back room and the host and waitstaff were completely overwhelmed and disorganized (save for one waiter who seemed like he was trying to make up for his colleagues' inappropriateness). I can imagine that running a space like this is stressful, but becoming rude and exasperated with one's own inefficiency while seating descends into chaos is not a good way to have people enjoy their evening or return. In addition, the expensive food was mediocre at best. My Moroccan chicken had potential, but was overcooked and served cold. The "brisket burger" was also overcooked and nothing special for the price. The waiter never brought the water we asked for. I get that this is a neighborhood joint and it's great there's a venue for emerging artists. But when you pay $25 to get in and $20+ for entrees, you expect more than a testy, disorganized staff and middling food. read more

Stumbled on Pangea on St. Patrick's Day looking for somewhere to escape the craziness. What a find! Hungry, we walked past a few restaurants to Pangea. We should have gotten the hint when the restaurant was half empty. It took about 20 minutes for the waiter to take our order. I came here for a corporate event, so the menu was pre-arranged. I had the spanakopita, which was ok. I've had better. I had the jambalaya as the main course and it was not good. The chicken was overcooked, the rice was undercooked, and overall too salty. The peach pie was made with canned peaches so it was overly sweet and the crust was too thick. A friend and I went here after seeing a movie across from it. We saw that there was a cabaret show and thought that would be fun. The cabaret is in the back of the restaurant. Tables are close together and it's a small place but the show was fun. The audience was fun as well. The waiter asked to take our order before the show started and no problem. After receiving our meal, he never checked back. While I understand not wanting to take away from the performance, it would have been nice to get another drink. After the meal he brought the check with no chance to get a dessert. I had the scallops which were ok. They have a special menu for the performance venue that is different from the main restaurant. I noticed that some people had something that was not on the menu we were given, however. There was a $20/per person "music charge" and there is a $20.00 minimum on food and drink. my experience here relates to a birthday party outing. it was spacious enough to fit big groups. food and service was not impressive for the one time experience i had here. i had the calamari and shrimp and beans appetizers and i have definitely had better. i know those were probably not the best items to get on the menu, but i wasn't that hungry. further more our bottle of pinot noir from oregon was eh. pinot noir is my favorite grape but this bottle seriously almost made me hate it. the service was extremely slow and it took about forever to get the bill. i'd probably never go here again. sorry! read more

I am a fan of this place. A place where you can kick back and relax with good food and drink. The Pear Sangria was very refreshing and tasty on a hot summer day and the pasta dish I ordered hit the spot. The server, Doug was exceptional. I had the duck confit that was really good, ambiance was really cozy and cool with melted candles behind the bar that look rustic. Noticed that they had pitchers of sangria, house cocktails including cosmos.. might have to come back to investigate this further, but overall a good experience, had a corner booth with a quaint table, waitress was nice and down to earth. Came here for a triple date with my roommates and was hardly impressed. The vibe was very grown up and modern however the waiter was more into his phone than taking care of us *he doesn't have to work for a tip seeing as its already included*. We had made reservations about two weeks prior and was told nothing about a private party until we decided to order dinner. The only good thing about this restaurant was the Pangea. Worst service EVER. This place is right down the street from my apt so I suggested it when my boyfriend's parents were in town for brunch. The food was decent but the service was unforgivable. The waitress brought out a bloody mary instead of a mimosa and insisted this was a mimosa (tomato juice and a celery stick are usually a clear sign of a bloody mary but not according to her). I asked for salad instead of potatos with my omlette and not only did she forget to make this change, but then when I pointed it out to her she told me it would take the kitchen 15-20 minutes to bring out my side salad because they were preparing for a private party in the back. It's just some lettuce on a plate, how long can that take to prepare?! Ridiculous. There were many other service errors that I won't even go into. All in all it was an awful experience and I am embarassed for reccomending it. Oh, forgot to mention, the manager (possibly even the owner) was sitting right by us the entire time witnessing this horrible service and never once stepped in to make it a more pleasant experience or fix a mistake. I have lived around the corner from this place for 9 years and it is almost always dead inside. This place inside is so cozy and nice! The outside seating is A-ok. Why is it always dead and why have I only eaten there twice, both times for brunch and never dinner? Because the menu sucks! All the places next door to it are jam packed all the time. Fairly mediocre experience. The vibe is trendy/chill. Decor + music = win. Don't get me wrong, the food was good...but the service was kind of bad. We had to ask for everyyything. Including constant refills for our water. We ordered the chicken samosas and the avocado feta salad. The samosas do not taste like a traditional samosa, but after all, this is not an Indian restaurant. The exterior is over fried - not very good. The cabaret style shows in the back room are always a gas. Try to catch the wonderful Tammy Faye Starlite doing her hilarious and on point "country" show. It's so, so good. To paraphrase the New York Time's review of her show, Tammy "inverts the cliché of the female country star as wholesome all-American gal" into a hard Saturday night partier and a Sunday morning, church going Baptist. Unreal and brilliant! Also, Tammy's Nico and Marianne Faithful shows at Pangea are not to be missed. An intimate night out of fine singing and hilarious commentary in Manhattan, The back room cabaret itself is a small but quite lovely room. Small....intimate. Food and drinks are very nice. But, remember, you are in New York City. You're going to spend some money. Also, if you drive in, park in a parking garage. There is a nice one on the corner of Great Jones and Lafayette that gives you great walking access to what is left of the East Village. Enjoy! read more

Pangea was not what I had expected. The website looks very modern and boasts such clientele as Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal. It is much more of an old New York feel, which I thought was fun. The food was hit or miss: I thought the vegetarian assaggio was surprisingly fantastic. The arugula and apple salad too bitter but our other appetizer, blackened chicken skewers were tasty. The chicken potpie was underwhelming and the apple crumble dessert amounted to soggy granola with overcooked apples. Oh and the service: the host was wonderful but the waiter all but completely ignored us. Also, they would NOT let us use the http://restaurant.com coupon for the prix fixe menu, so keep that in mind. Not sure how to rate this place as I only came here for some HH drinks with a few girlfriends. I guess I expected the place to be a bit more bustling on a Friday night, but on the upside, there was plenty of seating at the bar! The happy hour "special" is $2 off any drink (which can range from $8 to $14). I guess for NYC this is better than nothing at all. They have plenty of options and their pear sangria is worth trying. As we were leaving, the place was starting to fill up with diners so it looked promising. i have been going here for 20+ years, sometimes 3-4 times a week. it's #1 attribute is the staff--fun, friendly, and attentive. #2 is consistency--the spaghetti bolognese has been the same since the day i first walked in. i know that doesn't seem like much, but when you make a place your regular joint, it really counts. #3 are the specials--always something new and interesting and on trend. yes, it's a local joint with a local vibe, but after you're here once, you're part of the bunch. i'm trying to think of not to eat, but i've only had one bad meal here, like 15 years ago, and they made it right. the waiter, the host and the owner were visibly shaken and upset they served it. they got me another, and got me a free bottle of wine, if i remember correctly (fyi, it was a gristly steak--these things happen. ) they have great valentines/halloween/new years/oscar parties that go on way too late! read more

I went to Pangea with my friend for Brunch . At first we were a little skeptical because it was the only place on Sunday that was not super crowded. I have to say we were very pleasantly surprised.
