Good coastal vibes with nice outdoor seating and cool ambience. Boats a lot of tasty looking pastries (that we didn't try). Did not have a great experience, but the manager gave us a gift card because of how long we had to wait for the ordered food (not bakery items). Two of us in our party ordered a breakfast burrito and breakfast tacos, which took over 30 minutes to bring out (after asking about it a couple of times). It did not seem busy enough for the food to take that long. The second order of the exact same items came out 15 minutes later (for a total of 45 minutes). The food was just okay and a bit lackluster. Also, the coffee was not good (Americano); tasted over extracted and bitter. If we didn't have a negative experience, I would give it 3 stars. I do appreciate the manager trying to redeem it, but it was overall disappointing for how long we had to wait for the ordered food. Maybe more success if you do not order sit down food. read more

I have been very attracted to this old building for quite some time; she is a gorgeous old soul. It was known as the Bunker Building in honor of the first owner, and they had lots of business going on in this place. She is still quite the elegant lady today - dressed in her vintage colors and style - I wanted to paint her from the outside, so I did. I had to go inside to get a "feel" for the building. Artists are sensitive people and we get more of a story of places from the inside. It has a happy energy to it - it's got a past, like many of us, we all got baggage. This beautiful brick building has stood strong right on this spot since the mid 1880's! If you look at the bricks, they are darn near glued atop on another, the cement line is very thin. They used to build things that last back in them days. Today it is known as the Pannikin Coffee Shop; pannikin means a small metal cup. (I'll bet you didn't know that!) They have very sweet servers in there and I enjoyed the lemon bar, which is enough to feed 3 people! I also had the Martinelli apple juice which comes in a glass apple shaped container. I will definitely go back for their lunch menu this week, since I will be in Oceanside. Give Pannikin a try - it's a step back into happy memories. read more

So there's no wifi. But it's a really quaint coffee shop with plenty of room, differently styled seating areas, indoor and outdoor. Friendly service and reasonable prices. My coffee was like $3.75 with my own thermos, and they have a good refill discount. They have 2 large individual restrooms near the old-timey shoe shine station. read more

I stopped by for a 20oz soy latte. The ambiance and decor was wonderful. There was live music in the back patio, only on Saturdays. I also had their coffee cake which was amazing!! The top crunch and sweetness complimented the spongy bottom cake. I thought the latte could have used an extra shot because it seemed milked down in comparison to the other 4 shot coffee items on the menu. Ordered my iced latte and breakfast sandwich before my friend who was in line a couple people behind me. We sat down and she was first to get her breakfast tacos. The servers forgot about my food but nicely brought out my coffee and said my food would be out shortly. My food came out 20 minutes later and my friend had already finished her breakfast. Came it to try Pannikan, though I have always run by the one in Encinitas yet never made a stop until it became a local shop. This location has gone through changes as it once was an apothecary shop with succulent cafe ajoining. And then O'side Bakery had Bunker House cafe here, which I used to have on my rotation, but still drive to the bakery, occasionally, for coffee, pastries, breakfast, or lunch. Pannikan is newly open this week, and today, they were busting at the seams with far too many hires surrounding the order counter, which was understandable since there possibly was training going on. No food or pasty order, so I can't give my personal thoughts and opinions since I honestly have no desire to order eats here and only came to try the coffee. Coffee: I ordered the Jimi Hendrix, which was not enjoyable; I ended up tossing most of it. Should I return for a second try - I'll stick with a regular drip coffee so I can actually see and taste if I like the beans they use. Specialty coffee's here is a no-go, but I'll return for a drip for that one more taste. Service: The lady at the counter welcomed me upon entry, was prompt and pleasant in her interaction. The place is nice with many options, but it's not a top pick to keep on rotation like the 5 other small business shops I frequent locally. Personal opinion. read more

Tried the new Pannikin in Oceanside. Ordered right away with no line early Saturday morning. Had a Vietnamese & Lox Bagel - absolutely delicious! Really nice patio area in the back - a band was setting up - bummed I left before I got a chance to hear them. I've enjoyed other Pannikin location so gave the one in Oceanside a try. They changed up some features of the shop that was here previously but still kept some of the charm of the building . I got the Mexican mocha made with coffee rather than espresso. It was watered down and not very good. Not sure if the coffee itself was watery or what happened there. My friend got a London Fog and said it was watery too. I'll chalk it up to the location and maybe staff being new, hopefully it gets better. I got a lemon bar and that was great. Tart and tasty. Lots of space to hang out. No wifi, just like their other location. There is street parking nearby but this area gets busy so you may or may not find some close by. read more

Super disappointing. Ordered some food and drinks. Came out to a crazy amount for 2 people. Pannikin used to be affordable so not sure what happened. I looked at my receipt now and seems like prices jumped up a few dollars for nearly everything. $8 for an iced tea is ridiculous. Also the girls behind the counter were snooty, rude and one appeared sick. She kept coughing without covering her mouth all over the open food. I used to work for Pannikin and have been going to La Jolla and Leucadia locations since the 80's so I am pretty sad about the price, quality and the attitude. Still love the coffee, but probably will NEVER return to this location. What a bummer, cause the building is great, the ambiance is too. Okay, look, the place is cool; the location is cool; the Pannikin brand is cool. What is NOT cool is not having wifi for customers. It's just not logical in today's world where people frequent coffee shops in order to work, communicate with others, and entertain themselves. Is it "edgy" to have a place that eschews the social standard in favor of real social connection? Sure, but is that what most people are looking for in a coffee shop? Definitely not. On a side note, the mango black iced tea was too bitter to drink. I walked one block to Pier View where I got free wifi and a tasty iced tea. read more

After a disappointing lunch in Julian CA yesterday, It was nice to have a very good experience here at Pannikin today. They have the best quiche that I've come across in SD County and the mocha I ordered was also very good. Many "cafes" similar to this produce low quality espresso drinks served in plastic or paper cups. I requested a ceramic cup and my drink was tasty, nicely textured and at a perfect temperature. The only negative was, they don't offer the Quiche Combo that includes soup or salad like they do at the Encinitas location. All things considered, Pannikin is where I'll be coming to for my quiche and mocha when I'm in the area. read more

This review pertains mainly to this location since pannikin does have great coffee and food. It's sad because I used to go to the cafe that was here before it became pannikin at least 3x a week so I was really hopeful for the replacement. I lived next to pannikin in encinitas before this so we were honestly excited to have their scones so close to us! The first time I went, I noticed the prices were insane! I know it's San Diego but it's really a stretch. However, the quality is good so it's not a huge deal. What really bothered me is I was waiting 15 minutes for a bagel and cold brew. When I asked how much longer it would be they said they had forgotten about me.... They had just opened that week so I decided to look past it and went again a couple weeks later. The exact same thing happened and they apologized for forgetting about me. Not going to pay outrageous prices and wait 25 minutes for a cold brew and bagel to go. Haven't been back. read more

Personally - one of my fav matcha lattes and best quiche around - moist and tender crust which is also proportional to the egg (most quiches are too much egg) also comes with orange and peperoncinos on side which actually tastes great with it. The service is always great too very nice people who run it no matter which location. So the ambiance is great, the coffee is meh, service is fine. The problem: a terrible tasting vanilla oat milk latte costs $9.46. It's apparent the employees are not baristas and clearly doesn't know how to make a latte. I chalked it up to opening week and returned over the weekend to try again with the same result, which was a bummer. Today I decided to give it one last go as I needed a spot to work from for an hour - I decided to grab a tea so I can sit an work, but as I started ordering I realized their tea costs $7.95. Instead I decide to try a coffee au lait. The 12oz is $5.00 which is in my tolerable range for black coffee with milk. There is someone training another employee how to make this drink. I prepare to sit down to start working and ask for the Wi-Fi and I get a response: "oh, no, we don't have wifi." Almost surprised I was asking. I mean, why would you as an overpriced coffee shop focused on ambience, have Wi-Fi? I gave it a fair shot and I'm officially over it. I'll keep going to the coffee shop down the street with a $6.50 latte and free Wi-Fi and even friendlier staff. read more

When I visited during the Soft Opening, it was a bit busy. It was also a little loud it seemed, but that is ok. I was there to get a Gift Card and had a small cup of regular coffee. It was full of flavor and great! The space is unique and I like the back patio area. Of course, downtown parking can be a pain, but I was able to find a spot not too far away. Another Matcha Latte! Super sweet baristas with a shop inside if you feel like walking out with more than food. Plenty of seating and parking is on the backside. Outdoor seating is must. I came here for some hot chocolate on a cold day. I ended up getting the Mexican hot chocolate which was tasty. Very rich and creamy mmmm They had a decent selection of baked goods, I had a slice of carrot cake which was massive! It was worth the price because it was so big, definitely shareable. The interior is mostly the same as the bunkhouse of you had been to that cafe prior to it being pannikin. First time at Pannikin, adorable walking in, mediocre service at best. I stood at the counter with no line and the cashier, kitchen staff, and baristas all looked at me waiting at the register and turned around to continue their conversation. Like girl, I ordered from you like 5mins ago and didn't even leave the area? It wasn't even busy. As for the drink itself, I ordered an iced Jimi Hendrix, and while I recognize it has 4 shots of espresso and to expect a bitter taste, but the shots tasted dead, my drink was grainy and watered down with melted ice - yet the drink was still hot.. It was exciting to see Pannikin come to town because of its history and whatnot, but unfortunately I will not be frequenting this place. The coffee price is outrageous for mediocre coffee. I ordered a caramel latte with almond milk and it cost $8.50. This is the most expensive coffee in town yet the milk and syrup isn't homemade. $1 extra for store bought flavor shot and $1.25 for almond milk. There are so many coffee shops in town with higher quality. I hope they either review their prices or make the coffee ingredients better. read more
