The views are great from the most rooms.

I have made many five star reviews for Papakea. Everything is still true. This is a great place for a a family Hawaiian vacation. I am happy with the arrive and facilities as always.

Susan C.

(This review is of the resort, not our unit.) The big plus for Papakea is the location. It's located between Lahaina and Kapalua, so an easy drive in either direction... or a walk along the beachfront walkway. Condos can be rented from owners or by calling the resort itself. There are 2 clusters of condos around 2 different pools, surrounded by 4-6 nice, clean barbeques. The beach is not as accessible as others, but does have a small reef out a ways, providing for a calm area for kids to swim. There's a grassy strip along the beach wall and available lounges for sunning; a putting green behind the pool; tennis and pickel ball courts nearby. Equipment is available at the front desk. Your opinion of Papakea will largely depend on the condition of the condo you're in. Each is owned and each is different. We've stayed in beautifully decorated condos and we've stayed in a condo that was quite dated. Staff, generally, is helpful and accomodating. A caution: certain areas of the outside walkways have been treated with a product that is shiny and extremely slippery when wet, which happens after rain. I had the misfortune to step on that surface just after a rain, and had a hard fall. Other than that, our stay was lovely.

B206 Room view

Resort is good. Not every Condo is created equal. They are all run it like a AirBnB/VRBO but have a front desk to handle basic stuff. My room B206 was a one bedroom Condo with an awesome view but completly outdated and feels like you went back to the 1970s. You will pay an additional cleaning fee ( mine was $175) and a resort fee of $65 on top of my nightly fees at checkout. Overall, I'd go back to this resort but do research to see which room is updated to at least thd late 20th century..

Ocean front...50' away, 2 level condo with incredible whale views!
Bill S.

We stayed here in a condo right on the ocean...I mean like 50' from the sea wall. The waves crashing onto the seawall echoed into the condo so loud, we had to close the door some just to make the room quieter. Great place to relax and unwind. Nice grounds and pools / hot tubs. They have a putting green with nine holes to practice. Luckily our condo was very well stocked and had putters and balls. The other cool thing here is watching the whales right from your deck! We could see them spouting and crashing out in the sea. Really amazing to see this. They also have lots of really nice gas grills. One of the best meals we had during two weeks to Hawaii was going and getting a $7 package of chicken breasts, red peppers, onions and a pineapple. We marinated the chicken in balsamic, olive oil and some spices (all in our well stocked condo) and made kabobs (the wood sticks were also in our condo!). We made chicken / pepper / onion kabobs and ones with just pineapple. Grll these poolside and its a fantastic meal to enjoy! We made some Uncle Ben's Wild Rice to go along with this - it was delicious! On Hawaii where every meal is about $25/person when you go out, this was better and more fun than most of our other meals. Fun trip - great condo!

Honestly, this wasn't the best experience for us! Our 1st time to Maui, and since we had not traveled for awhile since the pandemic started we decided to head to Maui. We had an early flight, getting in at about 12:00 noon. When we got to the hotel/resort... we were told we couldn't check in, the room was still not ready... we went to eat, walk a bit and checked back around 3pm, nope still not ready... so we hung out in the car since we were a bit tired and just wanted to rest. 4pm, we go grab our keys, and the front desk agent said, oh now I can give you the key(hinting too, that the room was available for a while and they couldn't let us in till 4pm)! As for the room, it has a dirty carpet, stained curtains, a kitchen faucet that is about to fall off, an outdated style, very dusty, and the chairs in the patio was faded from the sun... almost to the point it looked disgusting. Considering we paid close to 1,500 for 4 nights, we expected to have a much better place... at minimum, good experience and ensuring that the property would have been maintained. Overall, I would not recommend this place for its stay. However, if you can look past all that, maybe this is for you. The view is great Stay away from room G204!

New head is security was a jerk. Wrecked the six of our vacation for no good reason. He kept going on and on about how he was the head of security, and how he was not hassling us just to hassle us. It sure felt like it to us! We hope he is not going to be here for too long! They have to hire nice people, with people skills, or they are going to see their clientele dry up. He is better suited to a military post or somewhere he can not interact with people trying to have a good experience on vacation. So what if you are the HEAD of security. You are a peon, really. And you can offend a lot of people more powerful than you.

Stay in an beach front / ocean front unit in Feb-2022. Large 1-bdrm suite with everything we needed in our suite. 2 a/c units that kept our whole suite nice and cool. Our balcony faces right into the ocean and we just brought food back to our ocean-front balcony to eat.

Breath taking views
Leanne S.

Our two bedroom two bath was perfect. The view was amazing. It is a drive from the tours for hana and Haleakala but it was peaceful. The beach was small and felt private. There was activity at the pool but it ended by 10 so it was not a big deal. People were grilling every night. Food trucks right around the corner. Great way to cut down the food budget. Highly recommend

Kristi K.

I wish I could say my experience was good. But my a/c wasn't great in my room the curtains were dirty. Lots of weird scratches on the floor boards.. They gave me a refund but charged my card an extra couple of times due to forgetting to put the minus sign on it ... so like just an extra charge. My room was through the Aston and yes it is spacious there! But it needs updated so bad. I'm sure the privately owned condos are better! I would give it another try but not for $4000 for 7 night holy sh*t... the staff is very nice. It's super dark at night. Can walk 10ft to the beach . Obviously they were very sweet about giving me a refund. But nobody seemed to know what was going on!

Another termite in our bed
Jake P.

INFESTED WITH TERMITES! We have killed at least 50 of them in the last 30 minutes. I just got off the phone with the front desk to inform them of what I thought was a major problem and they didnt even seem to care the slightest bit. They weren't even phased. They said they could send someone to spray in 2-3 and not so much as an apology or an ounce of compassion. It's 10 PM, we cant go anywhere else so we have to sleep with termites raining down on us. Service here is absolutely horrible.

Sunset view from our balcony.
Linda P.

We were, at long last, able to travel to Maui to belatedly celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. We booked an ocean view studio at a very reasonable price. Imagine our surprise when we were upgraded, free of charge, to a newly remodeled, spacious, front corner third floor one bedroom unit with an expansive ocean view. The staff was friendly and efficient, and while some services (like housekeeping) were unavailable due to COVID, a quick call to the front desk brought clean towels and toiletries to our door. We have stayed in many/most of the condo complexes along Lower Honoapiilani Road from Kaanapali to Napili. Most have been clean and pleasant. But the Papakea has now risen to the top of our list, and we look forward to returning. Thank you for a lovely experience.

But it does have a lot of other things going for it. Our favorite is the location to the boardwalk and the super easy access to the most beautiful beach. Perfect for morning walks. Snorkeling is incredible there. Also turtles, sometimes dolphins, monk seals and tons of whales during whale season. You have to pay $90 for two beach chairs and an umbrella. $36 for just an umbrella. Parking is $35 a night. It all adds up quickly. If you want a lounge chair at the pool, you have to get up by 5 AM to get the one you want. They have activities all day and live music most nights- really enjoyable to sit by the fit pit, watch the sunset and live. The rooms are hit and miss. Sometimes we get an ocean view where you can see a sliver of water. Another time we were next to their laundry units, which were loud. Other times we were ocean front and it was incredible to watch the whales. The little kitchenette is perfect. They are well stocked. And I love that you can do laundry. They clean the rooms every two days but you can ask for supplies if you need anything.

When discussed with the staff, they said if there is any sight of the ocean, it is deemed an ocean view. Most hotels call it a "partial view" so that would be a more fair description. Make sure that you get your ocean view and not the first floor. Otherwise, the pools were nice and access to the beach was good. The ability to cook in the kitchen was very nice as well Out of all the properties in Ka'anapali, this may have been our least favorite.

The free valet was fantastic, and the room was spacious, clean, and had a gorgeous ocean view. We had an issue with our mattress and it was never comfortable. That was the big bummer of the stay. They replaced our mattress after we said something but it didn't fix the issue. When we laid down, we always felt like where laying way back like toward the headboard, feet higher than our head. It may have been a bed frame issue. It wasn't the worst, we just ended sleeping the other way. You have to call housekeeping to get service. That was super easy and they did a great job. All staff on site were wonderful. The grounds were well-kept, and we loved spending time by the pool--there were a few different pools, each with its own unique feel. Surprisingly, we went down the slide several times (haha it's not just for kids). Duke's on the property was a big plus. They had servers taking orders pool side. The food trucks nearby were fantastic, dealing distance away, and so much variety. they're open u til 8pm. Overall, it was a great experience, and I would definitely come back.

The first time we stayed we did a one bedroom partial ocean, but this time around we did a studio and enjoyed the full ocean view. The staff have spoiled us with some sweet congrats cookies that we really enjoyed. This property also has a Dukes on site which is super convenient. They do get busy though so we've just ordered to-go and enjoyed our food on the balcony. One thing I wish this hotel did have would be a cafe, or some kind of coffee on site. There's a market in the other tower, but the building we stayed in has one under construction. I'm hoping they put a coffee spot because it would be perfect! We love the location and feel when we come here and the included parking is a HUGE plus! I couldn't recommend the Honua Kai more and we look forward to more visits here in the future.

Our second time here. Our first time as a single couple. It was fun, since we got the upper pool…read morewhich was quite big and nice. That was about 5 years ago. The rooms were old and outdated. And we were not impressed with the rooms, only the pools. Fast forward to just recently we came with our toddler son. The rooms are nicer now, it looks like the renovated. Like the bathroom looks renovated and the toilet isn't the slow flushing toilets. Rooms aren't too bad. Carpet wasn't dirty as I remembered it. Beds are lumpy though and it's also the worst made bed ever. They should learn from Mexico, their beds made are perfect. Westins bed is non fitted sheets with a undersize mattress cover, every thing moves around when you move around. So by the time you wake up, half of the mattress is exposed bc all the sheets are small. Or the sheets are all messed up beyond recognition! Lol. I had to constantly make the bed myself because any small movement moves everything out of place. Pools- we were only on the kids side. The one with the slide is a pretty small pool, but the one next to it is big (not kids specific). Good pool area for kids. We liked it. Not too many chairs but enough for the day. They need more small tables for drinks. It was very limited. The pool water was also extremely cold. We came in May and the water was like ice water. Probably good on a hot day but it was windy and cold. What is odd is the pool next to the kids pool was not ice cold. It felt just right. We had to move over there. But one day it was not ice water, so it's a hit or miss with water temp. Best thing was their arcade. I don't recall they had this 5 years ago. It was awesome!! My toddler loved this. What a great way to entertain them. Also has a bar there for the adults and bowling alley. Not real bowling but close enough. It was cool. Arcade bartender made a really good lychee martini, best one I've tried. The arcade is the BEST part of staying here with a toddler. They also got a new restaurant- Ulu, which we came for breakfast everyday. It was good. Enjoyed their pool bar too. Every one was really friendly too. Overall, it's a good resort. Westin has the best resort pool and now arcade. Also close to Whalers Village. We would come back again.

I really enjoyed my recent stay at the Westin in Kaanapali. I'd say that it checked the boxes in…read moreevery regard that was important to me - convenience, great location, updated facilities, and family friendly. I came here late April 2026. When you first arrive and walk into the lobby, it is quite stunning. I don't know when their latest renovation was, but it feels updated within the past 7-8 years, modern but also keeping that nice Hawaiian touch. You're welcomed by several live plants and flowers covering the walls in the breezeway when you walk towards the front desk, and can spot a waterfall and koi pond. Rooms - As Marriott Bonvoy members, we luckily got upgraded to the room with view of ocean and expansive pool area - literally looks like the picture featured on this Yelp review. It's a stunning view. The room itself was also nicely updated! It felt modern, yet still cozy and inviting. We got 2 queens, and it seems that every room comes with a balcony. We all loved the balcony - great way to be outside and enjoy the weather, live music, and dry your swimsuits. Anyway, the room itself was very comfortable, and it's hard to find updated rooms in Maui for a somewhat decent price. I think my only complaint is that it was a bit small - it was ok for the 3 of us (2 adults + 1 toddler), but I can't imagine coming here as a family of 4 with teenagers, and have to squeeze into the small room. Swimming pools - there were several to choose from, including a designated kid's pool, regular pool, and adult only pools. They were each nicely designed and landscaped with the trees - there were several slides for each pool, and designed in such a way where you couldn't even notice them. Also, the adult pool was hidden, so little ones aren't tempted to access the adult only pool, and I'm sure it worked well the other way by not being able to hear the kids! The towel process was a little annoying. We were given several towel cards good for each towel. But the annoying thing was that we had to carry separate towel cards separate from our room key, that was a wristband. Might as well just combine the two to make it more convenient for guests? Not that it was a huge hinderance - just a suggestion. Beach access - you are basically right there, on a public beach. It was extremely convenient to be right there, grabbing our towels from the hotel and using them for the beach. If you want lounge chairs, umbrellas, etc. though, you will have to pay a fee to rent them. Obviously it's not as nice as other hotels that have that all set up for you, like we've experienced in other countries, but hey, it's just the Westin. Restaurants - There aren't too many restaurants to choose from here - but we did really enjoy the Hale Moʻolelo Restaurant/Bar. We didn't actually eat here at all, but enjoyed cocktails here every night. They have live music DAILY each evening, and welcome all ages, including our toddler. I was getting tired of the Hawaiian tiki drinks, started ordering regular cocktails, which were decent. The live music alone was wonderful each evening. There was also the Ulu Kitchen by Merriman's, which we were somewhat interested in trying, but never got around to it. Marriott Bonvoy members also get free breakfast with their stay. They did not have a designated breakfast restaurant, unfortunately, but rather they gave us credit for the convenience store that served hot food and other beverages. They had options such as Loco Moco, scrambled eggs and potatoes, acai bowls, spam masubi. Honestly it was all very disappointing food - my daughter really only liked the spam masubi that didn't seem worth it for one entree item. We did utilize the free beverage for bottled water each day though, which was convenient. Location - was wonderful too. It was located right next to Whaler's Village, which is a shopping center with lots of restaurants, coffee, an ABC store, etc. It's a short walk, and we walked here each morning to get coffee, have my toddler run around, and also walk around with her in the stroller during her naps. The hotel is also located with just a few minutes drive to Lahaina, where more restaurants were. Amenities - they have random pet parrots that come out during the daytime, which my daughter loved seeing each day. Fun to see the fish in the koi pond. Also, they have random vendors/activities in their breezeway where the shops are, including pineapple tasting, hat making, etc. which can be fun for the little ones. The arcade was also pretty amazing. Some of the games have this "play until you win" feature, which was really nice for all kids playing to win something. My daughter was hooked. Elevators can be slow. We found that the ones located on the side closest to the front desk were faster than the ones closer to the Arcade! Just realize that this place seemed like it was intended for families, but it was executed quite nicely. Would highly recommend.

I wouldn't mind staying here again but most likely I'd try a different location just for new experiences.

When we inquired about our room and if it was correct, we were told it was and that some owners of the condos renovate the condos and they may not match the online postings exactly. We were very displeased with this and this is clearly false advertising. If I wanted a studio, I would have booked and paid for a studio. As a family, we had no privacy because of this and made the sleeping situation undesirable. We could also hear the people above us every night. At around 3am they would be up stomping around and you could hear everything. The rooms are supposed to be updated but I would not consider our room updated. There was no housekeeping. I had to call and request it but our room was only serviced once. Luckily we weren't charged, unlike other reviews I have seen. The larger pool was fine; definitely not resort style. But it could use some maintenance each day because the pool seemed dirty and not cleaned from the various people frequenting it each day. I would have given this place a one star but I gave it two stars due to: 1) the front desk staff we interacted with was very kind and helpful; truly so nice. 2) our kids enjoyed the morning hot cocoa 3) the location to the beach is nice and the beach was enjoyable 4) the walking path and proximity to local spots and hotels was convenient. But again, we were disappointed and would not stay here

There's the popular outdoor mall, Whaler's Village about a 5 minute walk away with restaurants and shops, just follow the beach path. LUGGAGE STORAGE (1/5): We arrived a bit early and the staff held onto our luggage while we went out to get food. I didn't see where it was taken. I did not realize that they would store our luggage outside in the humidity!!! I thought they would store it inside the hotel in a closet in the back. I had temperature-sensitive medication in my luggage and when we came back to check-in, I was shocked to find our luggage stored outside. Had I known that, I would have asked them to store my meds in the fridge for me. Thankfully, my meds were okay in the end, but it did give me panic. PARKING (5/5): Since we booked through Costco, the parking was included with our stay. We had in/out privileges and no valet required. STAFF (5/5): I forgot her name, but she welcomed us very friendly and checked us in. Michelle I think was her name. We asked about local places to eat and she kindly wrote us a list. The housekeeping staff was also very nice and always greeted us in the halls. SHUTTLE/TROLLEY (5/5): There's a free green trolley that will take you to Whaler's Village and came around every 30min or so (check the schedule) and will also drop you off at nearby hotels along the beach, not just the Outrigger. Also, the hotel has it's own private shuttle that will follow the same route within the resort grounds if you don't want to wait for the trolley. Again, they don't exit the resort. One night we went to a nearby hotel (The Bungalos) for a music event but had just missed the trolley and the guys out front said they could drive us in the hotel van. And then gave us a number to call them when we were ready to go back to the hotel, so we called them but wanted to go to dinner at Whaler's Village after and they took us. So so convenient. really nice guy! It's complimentary but we tipped our driver and he was always so kind! We read in the handouts that they did a special going-away ceremony at the end of your stay but unfortunately we had to miss it to catch our early flight, so Michelle was kind enough to give us the necklace and do a mini version for us there at the check-out counter. POOL (1/5): We didn't even try the pool. It's quite small in size, and it was so hot, and no shade anywhere, so we didn't bother. They did provide towels though that you could swap out and stuff, so we used those and just went to the beach. RENTALS: There's a hut on-site where you get the towels, but also offers rental stuff for the water, beach chairs, etc. Note: the beach chairs + umbrella rentals are quite steep, I think was like 2 chairs + 1 umbrella almost $85 and had to return by 5pm. We ended up going to Costco and instead and bought 2 tommy bahama chairs and umbrella and used them the whole week while we were there, and even used our chairs at other places too. We saved some money that way and used that money instead to tip the staff and buy food in Maui b/c it ain't cheap! ACTIVITY SCHEDULE: We were given a print-out at check-in with activities throughout the week, however we showed up to one of them and there was nothing going on but there was a gentleman there. We were told that the print-out was outdated so we had missed the activity since it was earlier in the week. So don't go off the print-out. He had a different schedule available at his table. So..there's that. Overall, I would not mind staying here again but would be interested in staying at the other hotels along the Kanapali beach.

We arrived at the Outrigger on February 10 after a long flight, tired and hungry. Most of the…read moreisland had been without power due to high winds, which we did not know until we checked in. When the lobby erupted in applause, the desk clerk explained that the power had just come back on. So far, so good. Before arriving, I had upgraded to a remodeled ocean view room for a small fee. Unfortunately, the resort's definition of "ocean view" and mine were not the same. Our room was on an upper floor, but the view was almost completely blocked by large courtyard trees. If you leaned and looked hard enough, you could see a tiny sliver of ocean off to the right. Not what I expected for an upgrade. Be very cognizant of what style of room you are choosing. Oceanfront is their best category and those rooms are very limited in number. Ocean view is a complete gamble in terms of what kind of view you will actually receive, and partial ocean view will likely mean you are looking at the backside of the hotel with a limited or possibly nonexistent view. Things got worse when we went to eat. The Maui Beach Club, the only on property restaurant, was closed for a private event. After a long travel day and a power outage, it was surprising and disappointing that the resort would close the only dining option to paying guests. I went to the front desk to express my frustration about both the room and the restaurant closure. They offered to show me my original room, but that "ocean view" required leaning over the railing and looking sideways to find a glimpse of water. I declined and stayed with the upgraded room. To their credit, they did give us a one hundred dollar resort credit for the inconvenience. For the rest of the stay, the Maui Beach Club meals were good and the staff was generally pleasant. We found even better dining options at Whalers Village, which is conveniently close. The pool, however, is nothing to write home about. It is very small, has no shade, and has no umbrellas. Guests were dragging chairs all over the property trying to find relief from the sun. It looked more like a crowded summer festival than a resort pool area. One last surprise: this is the only place in all my Caribbean and beach travels where I have had to rent beach chairs and an umbrella. Two small folding chairs and one umbrella cost eighty five dollars per day, and only until four thirty. Multiply that by a week and it adds up fast. I spoke with another couple who simply went to Costco, bought an umbrella for forty five dollars and two chairs for ninety nine dollars, and planned to pass them along to another guest when they left. Honestly, that is the smarter move. Overall, the location is great and some staff members were wonderful, but the arrival experience, misleading room categories, lack of dining access, underwhelming pool, and high beach rental fees made this stay far less enjoyable than it should have been.
