The first time I went here I liked the place enough to return again. But my return visit really changed my opinion of this place. The food is good. not exceptional but good. However, its the service here that has made me feel like they deserve such a low rating. It was a sunny nice day recently and my husband and I went out to eat. We walk into Papaya and are seated quickly. After a minute or two we start to get so freezing cold tho. Their AC is on full blast, its like 50 degrees inside the place and we didnt bring coats... I walk up to our server who is at the register, and ask if its ok that we can move outside because we are too cold. She just looks at me like I ruined her whole day. She didnt say nothing, just staring at me like "omg i fucking hate you" or something... She reluctantly says its ok and I just go back to our table and sit. My husband asked me whats going on and I told him, she says we can move but she does not at all seem happy about it, lets just sit here instead, i dont want to piss her off any further. Then she comes over and completely changes her tone and asks if we wanna still sit outside. We grab our stuff, we dont make her carry anything, and we go out there. This server does not come back to assist us the rest of the night. No checking in. No refills. No making sure its all right. Didnt ask if we needed a box. Didnt even bring our check. She made some guy help us afterwards. This place just made me feel unwelcomed and for that I dont know that I'll return. read more

You know it's an Americanized Vietnamese joint when they offer zucchini noodles and get away with charging you an extra $1 for every little thing. My friends and I decided to try this place out after walking by it multiple times in the Landing. I know they're known for their Oxtail Pho, so I don't know why I didn't try it....but I didn't. My friend really enjoyed it though. Based off of what I did try: *Bun bo hue (3/5) - I honestly haven't had a really good bowl of bun bo hue since I've moved to Washington. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't that good either. *Beef pho (4/5) - It was honestly a little weird not having the option to choose the type of beef I wanted, but it was good. The meat was tender, and there was a decent amount of noodles in it. The vegetables were all fresh and clean. A decent bowl of bowl but nothing special.For $10/bowl, I would've been disappointed if it wasn't good. *Chicken glass noodles (5/5) - probably one of the few things I would come back for, just because you can't get a decent bowl of glass noodles anywhere else. I like that they give you the option to choose between white/dark meat as well. *Black milk tea (4/5) - Because Sharetea was closed, I decided to try it out as an alternative option. It was surprisingly good. The boba in it was even a perfect consistency (rarity for pho places.) No size options for the noodles. Service was attentive but not very personable. Based off of their convenient location, I think I would come back to try some of their other options. As far as pho goes, you're better off driving up the hill to Kim Phuong or Hot Pho to spend that extra $3-5 on spring rolls on something. Sharetea line was too long and I was craving for something cold with tapioca. So I figured why not give their bubble tea a try....nope first and last time. Ice was not even crushed well and there was only like 10 or less tapioca inside, so 75% of the drink was just ice with powdered taro basically. $5.25 is overpriced for a bubble tea that is so easy to make but not even good. When you walk in there's a pls wait to be seated sign and the host is never there and I've had to wait around for a few minutes before someone notices. They're pretty quick to come take your order and the food is quick too but every time they bring one dish at a time leaving one of us awkwardly waiting for up to 5 minutes with the food just sitting. Why do they do this?? The food itself is aight. The pho broth is oily and has a unique taste not bad but not great. Fried rice is very good. I really wanted to like this place. I've had Vietnamese food a handful of times and was excited to introduce my fiancé to it. To start, the service was terrible. It took forever for our server to return to our table to take our drink orders and then food orders. We also never got any drinks other than water, despite ordering them. I tried to ask the server about food that might contain milk/dairy and he wouldn't answer or ask the kitchen staff. The table beside us also had some food allergies and ate there all the time and said our server just was new, but I don't think that's any excuse. Once we finally got our food, the mango shrimp roll to split and I got a "healthy salad noodle bowl" with chicken, I still wasn't that impressed. The roll tasted really fresh, but the veggies in my salad bowl, not as much. The chicken had good flavor, as did the noodle portion, but overall the dish was just mediocre. It was sizzling and making the bottom part of the rice crispy but didn't burn it which is perfect. Pork belly was so tender and melted in my mouth. Best pho' in the area. Not overly greasy like a lot of places and full of flavor. This has become a regular spot for us. The crab wontons are amazing and if you ask for extra bean sprouts they are not stingy! The boba tea is also good, the coconut milk is a little too sweet for me, but that's just personal taste. I've been ordering from Papaya for at least 8 years. Recently have noticed a few times the people who work there are just not great at customer service. A few times have gotten our orders wrong. But we love their lemongrass chicken and pho. We've ordered it for years. Tonight I ordered it again, lemongrass chicken with rice, classic beef pho, and veg spring roll. I got home and my lemongrass chicken looked a lot lighter than usual, and and not quiet the same. But I took a bite anyway. Yah no lemongrass at all no garlic, no spice. So I called, because I just tipped and paid $50 for this meal. The woman who rang me up, answered the phone. I called to see if they could make me a lemongrass chicken and I'd pick it up again. The woman at the front of the restaurant argued with me. And tried to tell me what it was. I've been ordering it for years I know what it's like. She said bring it down so she could "show me" it was lemongrass chicken. Uhhh I won't be taking a trip in my car again so you can argue with me. I know about how it looks and tastes I've been ordering it for years. How about you make it right and make me a lemongrass chicken, since I just paid you $50 for this chicken dish which is NOT lemongrass chicken. She made no attempt to make it right. I guess they just don't care about loyal customers. Super disappointed! Last few times our lemongrass chicken has been super inconsistent. This is really sad... the food here is amazing but recently coming here the service is bad and not friendly. Recently I had lunch here and found not 1 but 2 hairs in my Pho. I addressed the manager about it and he didn't say anything to me but "I will take it off the check" and grabbed it and walked off. As a very regular costumer I will no longer give them my business as someone that has been here multiple times. Ok. I actually had to create an account on Yelp just to make you all aware of the very americanized horrible food/service we got here. First, you have to order before you sit down. Not a big flaw, but...weird for a pho place. Second, a bowl of Pho is like 9.00. I can go up the street to Hot Pho (which is excellent) and get the same (but better) bowl for only 5.60. Third, my mother ordered the pho with steak and meatballs. It came with no meatballs. So they brought her some in a seperate dish with broth. Weird? Yes. Third, you have to pretty much wait on yourself. If you need water, get it yourself. If you need napkins, get it yourself. Oh and dont forget the sauce!! If you need that, get it yourself. Goodbye. they have great pho. they also have a number of other really good dishes. the salt and pepper tofu is some of the best. the bun bo huey, basically vietnamese udon, is super as it leaves out stuff like pork blood tendon and the other crap that you really can't tell comes from a hooved animal. only gripe is that parking is impossible at all times. it's right across from the theatre. My husband is a regular here, was heading there today mid day, and it was "closed for cleaning"? They had all the chairs and tables out, and they were pressure washing. The pressure washer blew up, everyone was fine. ANYWAYS, this is very suspicious. Everyone knows that Asians loooooove their money. Why would they risk sales and be closed mid day for cleaning? Why not "clean" before or after hours? This leads me to believe their was some kind of inspection OR infestation... I'm going to see if I can find out to say for sure.
