The PHG board game store is located in the north of Sawtelle area, with metered street parking in the neighborhood. They open daily from 2pm to 10pm and it's super spacious inside, after walking through the entrance the left side arranges racks for board games, and the right side is set up for tables and chairs. The staff working here is very friendly, and you can play board games here for free, make sure to donate or make purchases. They also host board game tournaments here.

Awesome store in a great location. Came in to demo games and got a mini-masterclass in Magic the Gathering. Kind people, fun games, and big tables. Will be back! Special shout-out to the owner who was really kind.

I don't understand how there aren't more reviews of this awesome place! I personally don't play board games, so I never really checked out this place. But one of my friends loves playing board games, so when he came over to visit me one day, we walked over to check our Paper Hero's Games. When we walked in, I was soooo surprised at how big and spacious the store is: half the store has tables so people can come in and play any games with their friends and the store even has board games that people can play, if they don't bring their own. The owner was super duper friendly to both of us when we walked in, even though we were just browsing. Of course, I don't know anything about games, but as we were browsing, my friend kept mumbling to himself, "Ohmygosh, they have this??? And they have this also??? Oh woooaaahhhhh...." So even though I don't know anything about board games, from the reaction of my friend who plays board games, their board game inventories are amazing, as is the fact that they have weekly events like YuGiOg, Magic the Gathering, Pokémon, etc. :)

Ask the Community - Paper Hero's Games

Hi! How easy is it to find parking in the area? Are there any free options or is it all metered street parking?

There are a couple residential areas about a block away that are free to park. Other than that there is a pay to park lot behind the store which is a dollar and hour.

Is there a good number of people to play board games on Friday nights?

We usually have a couple groups show up, but to stay in the loop it's best to join the whatsapp group chat. Here's the link to it! https://chat.whatsapp.com/Fv5YNZHwAseGCE74KBW3J0

Do you guys host Pokémon tcg-related events?

Yes on Tuesdays at 7:30PM and Saturdays at 3PM.

Do you guys sell yu gi oh cards?

Yes we do! We are an OTS selling sealed product, singles, and Yu-Gi-Oh accessories.

I'n not entirely sure what this guys problem was that day, but boy did I have a poor experience on…read morethe phone with one of the guys that work here. I'm a private Pokémon card collector that has never ventured into the world of buy/sell/trade, so I decided I'd call a few shops in the area to see what they'd recommend, and this is exactly how this conversation went. Guy answers phone, i asked him if he had a minute to answer a couple questions i had. "i mean i have a few people I'm helping right now but yeah sure" I proceed to explain that i was looking for guidance or advice on how to offload my extensive Pokémon card collection as I'm moving out of the area, and i was wondering if they had a buyer or something of the sort that would sit down with me and run through it to see what they're willing to buy, etc. He responds, "oookay. Are you planning on paying someone for that?" Confused, i asked what he meant? "Basically what I'm getting at is no, we don't do that. I have a guy here that's really knowledgeable about that kinda stuff but i wouldn't wanna waste his time" I thanked him for his "candid" (read: completely rude) response and that i would look elsewhere. Needless to say I'll never step foot here again.

They're selling it for $2 and the prick of a staff made us feel shitty for even asking. Like you can say no straightforwardly and nicely. Went in for Pokemon singles. They have a system where you search cards on a tablet that has pricing…read moreand condition. They were adamant that you use the system to even take a look at cards. There were a couple employees available and I asked to see a couple cards but they insisted I type it into the system, select all the cards I'm interested in, then select check out, and THEN an employee would gather the cards for me to view. The first couple of cards I tried to type in were not found in the system but were in the display case. The employee suggested I type the card number (e.g. 2/108) and that did not work either. Finally I found a card I liked in the system but when I looked up that particular card, it appeared to have 2 versions, both near mint but different prices. When asked about the difference in prices, the person behind the counter took 10 minutes to research the cards and change the prices to even higher than originally listed - stating there was only 1 version of the card and they were mislabeled in the system. At this point, he finally showed me the cards and they were objectively not near mint. I wanted to get a closer look to see how played they were but they would not let me see the card outside the sleeve even when I requested that they take it out themselves if they were scared I would damage the card. He then again took the time to inspect the cards himself and correct the listed condition of the cards in their system while he had me wait. I asked if they would honor the original listed price from when I walked in but they said no. With that, and my not being able to make my own, closer inspection on the condition, I ended up not buying anything since I had no baseline to go off to see if it was worth buying for myself. Even without making a purchase, it was an awkward, uncomfortable shopping experience. The sealed product was comparatively much higher than the current market prices. There is a decent selection of singles but their tablet system was misleading and inconsistent. The selections were not good enough to entice me to come back. Be careful in your own price checking when coming to this place.

Love it here! Everyone is super nice, their selection is awesome (no, seriously--they have a tablet…read morethat has all of their inventory so you don't have to waste your time sorting through piles of bulk), and the prices for things aren't stupid expensive like they are at some shops. I also love that they do events--can't wait to go to my first prerelease event here!

I have come to this place a good bunch of times and never really had any issues before. Cute cats,…read morehelpful staff, and I always liked the place. I just did not make the time to go back until they moved from their location on Magnolia. I am not sure what happened, but this was my most recent experience: I called because I was looking for cute sleeves for a 100 card Magic deck I am building for my girlfriend. I asked if they had sleeves with girly and cute graphics, like flowers, happy designs, cute animals, or even Bloomburrow themed sleeves. The person I spoke to was not very helpful. They kept asking what I meant by cute, giving examples like dragons and goblins, despite me trying to explain the kind of designs I was looking for. Eventually they said they had pink and yellow sleeves and told me to come in. I went in later that day but could not find any sleeves with cute graphics. There were some empty hooks that looked like they may have been intended for sleeves, so maybe they had sold out or had not restocked yet. Either way, I could not find what I was looking for. I asked the staff at the register, and they told me that everything on the floor was all they had. I looked around again, but still found nothing. After that, I asked about Magic: The Gathering Commander nights. I am fairly new to Magic and am trying to get my girlfriend into it, so I asked whether they had Commander nights and whether they teach new players or have a designated table for beginners. The person at the front desk looked confused and said, "...you want me to teach you Magic?" I clarified that I was asking whether they had Commander nights and if someone there helped new players. They simply said, "No, no we do not." I respectfully thanked them and was about to leave when I noticed their calendar said "Thursday Night Commander." There were no prices listed, so I checked the Magic website when I got home and found that they charge $8 for Commander nights. I was surprised by this, especially considering that you are essentially paying to play 1-2 games of Magic with strangers over 3-4 hours. Their prices on booster packs also seemed considerably higher than nearby stores. I strongly recommend doing some research on MSRP before buying packs or products here. I am new to Magic, but I have played Pokemon and Lorcana, so I have a general idea of what packs normally cost. This time, I saw prices that were 2 to 3 times MSRP. I do not remember seeing prices like that when I previously visited their Magnolia location, where I bought Pokemon and Lorcana packs and board games. I understand they are running a business and need to make money, and I am not asking them to give anything away for free. But 2 to 3 times MSRP seems excessive, especially for a store that has been a staple in Burbank for years and has such a supportive community. Maybe they need to find a different distributor, or maybe their own costs have increased. Magic has also become extremely popular, so perhaps that is contributing. Either way, I think customers should be aware of the prices and compare with other stores before purchasing. I am not saying nobody should shop here, and obviously nobody is forcing me to buy anything. I just enjoy collecting and playing these games and try to stay within a budget, so I would prefer to pay as close to MSRP as possible. There are plenty of other options, and I think it is worth doing some research before making a purchase. Maybe things have changed since they moved. Maybe I happened to speak with someone on their first day, or someone was simply having a bad day. I do not know. I just hope that if I come back in the future, the staff are a little more knowledgeable and patient, because I left this experience feeling pretty let down and frustrated. If I do return and have a more positive experience, I will absolutely update this review. Thank you.
