I'm convinced that Towson has no good taco spots or Mexican food spots. Decided to give this place a try because I hear mixed things. I got delivery and my order got to my door fairly quickly and food was still a good temp. I ordered the short rib tacos with a side of rice and chorizo pinto beans. It was bland and the two tacos for the price was not it, very small tacos with bland short rib. The salsas carried it and gave it flavor. The rice and beans: BLAND! Where is the flavor, how are chorizo pinto beans bland???? I see why the place has iffy reviews. Can't speak on the atmosphere or service because again it was delivery. Good spot for tacos and fajitas! I liked how nice the service was, they always checked up on my friends and me and asked if we wanted more water/drink refills or if we'd like to place an order for more tacos. It did take quite a while for the food to come out, even though we were one of the few customers in the restaurant at the time. However, when the food did come out, it was piping hot and steaming! I often drive by Papi's Tacos, so I decided to give them a try. They start you off with complimentary chips and salsa, but since I prefer queso, I requested that as well. For my entrée, I kept it simple and ordered a chicken quesadilla. They have taco specials on Tuesday nights, but I wasn't in the mood for tacos. The queso for the chips was pretty good, and my quesadilla was tasty. I loved that they use queso de Oaxaca, which really enhanced the flavor. Our server was attentive and accommodating. We came across Papi's Tacos on Yelp while in the Maryland area and decided to try it for a quick lunch. It is a small place in a small strip mall. It took us a while to get sat, and we almost left do to this. Service was very slow. We ordered vegetarian tacos and the gringo meat tacos. The tacos were overstuffed making them messy, but they were tasty. Serving sizes were good. They gave free chips and salsa while you waited, which reminded me of the chips and salsa you get at Chilis. I would go back as it was tasty and an inexpensive meal. Came here after work on a Friday around 5:30p with a large group. Thankfully, they were able to accommodate us since we arrived early. The restaurant is kind of small, so larger parties may have to wait a long time for a table if arriving later in the evening. Service was fast and our waiter was attentive to our party. However, no one explained the system for ordering street tacos. There are small clipboards with individual sheets of paper with all of the street tacos offered (kind of like an a la carte sushi place). The confusing and frustrating part of this was if you wanted more than one type of taco, you have to fill out a new sheet for each type. Seemed like a waste of paper and time, to be honest. We ordered the esquites, queso fundido with chorizo, and tableside guacamole for appetizer. All were delicious! The esquites was slightly too salty but still really good. For dinner I had the Baja burrito bowl with shrimp. The portion was gigantic so definitely good for leftovers. I thought the flavor was just okay and would try something else next time. For dessert I sampled the churros with cajeta sauce (caramel) on the side. It was good, not too sweet. A friend had the Mexican fried ice cream and raved about it. I love coming to Papi's Taco's to gather with friends and family. The eatery has a wide range of food accommodating for gluten free, vegan, and vegetarian diets. I like their house margarita as well their MOCKTAIL margarita, pick whatever you are looking for! I highly recommend the vegan tacos on the menu, they are sooo delicious! Another time I got chips and queso, which is great to share with your table. Parking is plentiful in the parking lot in front of the eatery. And the restrooms are clean and organized. The service is quick and the staff are so friendly and love to chat with you, giving you a cozy hometown vibe. As always the food is the only thing I base my review on. The other items are not part of the ratings consideration, but I wanted to share them as well. We were meeting another couple for dinner. They had not tried Papi's. We got there early enough for a drink order off the happy hour, before they closed it. I believe it is 4-6, but check their website. The waiter was fast and checked our drink order immediately after we sat down, so bonus. As for the location the men's bathroom was clean, the women's bathroom was clean but had a smell. (This is common for some restaurants so don't read into this.) As for the dinning room, the single metal seats need to be replaced. Three of the four of us complained the they were uncomfortable. If offered take the bench if you are a larger person. Again not part of the review, but hopefully something they will fix. For the food, my wife ordered the chicken tortilla soup, which turned out to be made with thigh meat, not breast. She said it was ok, but was hungry and ate it quickly before I could get a picture. I'm quoting her, "it was good but it wasn't spicy." Now to be honest, her level of spicy is higher than average so maybe ask the server before ordering. The soup was followed up by the Mission Style burrito. She said it was lacking flavor. See picture. For me, I ordered the Baja burrito bowl with shrimp. See picture. It came with your choices of beans, many options of salsa, a selection of a sour cream of sorts, and an up charge of shrimp, which was my choice. This was mediocre, to be honest I think it was sitting in the back and it cooled too much. If it held the temperature it may have been better, but small cold shrimp on a burrito bowl did not cut it. Came here with a private group reservation with my church for a groups event and we had a good time! Service was pretty good and the food was delicious! I had the flour tortillas with chicken, tortilla chips with queso and the refried beans mixed together. Everything was so flavorful, it was absolutely delicious. Sometimes when you have tortilla chips they aren't that good, but these were great! The only potential issue was that it took a while for us to get drinks. And the private dining area is right through the kitchen so servers are constantly walking through that space but they can't help their building configurations I guess. Even though the tacos are richly filled, they were only accompanied with one taco and not the custom 2 like food trucks, especially because there is so much in that one taco that you need two! I was really excited to check out Papi's. We called on a Saturday night to see how long the wait was around 8:30. No wait, so we headed over. That was def an indicator of things to come. The place was half empty. We were seated in the very back room (the space is surprisingly large, narrow but long). Complimentary chips and salsa (the casa salsa) were brought over quickly w glasses of water and we ordered our drinks. I had a skinny en Fuego margarita and it was great! One of the best I have had in a long time. The chips and salsa were good, nothing notable, and the salsa is pureed smooth. We placed our food orders, chicken street tacos for me w several add on sauces to try and chicken enchiladas w a side of beans for the DBF. This is where things went downhill. Our server didn't really engage w us, he didn't seem to want to be there. He checked on us periodically but never thought to bring drink refills. The DBF's soda sat empty for the last half of our meal. The enchiladas w the rojo sauce had a nice taste but were smothered in cheese and super mushy. You receive 4 enchiladas, but to add on the lackluster beans or the rice it is an additional cost. I liked my street tacos, and I added on sides of pico, mole, guac and rojo sauce to try them out. $.75 each, and the guac ramekin was $2.50. I hate when places nickel and dime you for everything. Keep in mind it is clearly stated on the menu the additional charges, and if the taste was great it would be worth it, but everything was simply just ok/boring. This location is open! Since the space is in a shopping center there's plenty of free parking. Although the exterior appears small, the space is quite large. There's a bar in the front room when you walk in with high top tables. Larger dining room to the back with plenty of seating. Chips and salsa were delivered almost right when we were seated. The chips were packed in an individual bag and came with a basket to pour them into. Service was right on and food came out quickly. They had a fun Halloween drink menu, but I ordered red sangria. The sangria was light and complimented the tacos. I ordered from the vegetarian menu. When we entered they asked if there were dirt restrictions and have us a standard menu as well as vegetarian. There's also the option to build your own street tacos as well! All staff were friendly and kind. The overall restraint atmosphere was uniquely decorated and clean. First time we've tried this location. Overall it's got a nice vibe, with a good bar area and plenty of seating in the back. Service was pretty good, though several workers seem to be standing around talking while two did all of the work. They were quick with chips and salsa and drinks were good as usual. They use the Oaxaca cheese in the quesadilla which makes it taste even better. The staff is super friendly, even though you can tell they are doing so so so much. Flavored margaritas are a must. My favorite is the Guava, but I ordered Coconut in this most recent visit and it was delightful. All margs are available frozen or on the rocks. We typically build our own tacos. I took away one star because it's a little pricey and I wish they had a little more meat, but DAMN are they tasty. You can add a little sauce cup filled with guacamole for $2. It was decently tender, not the leanest but not overly fatty either Elote: 10/10 - dare I say papis has some of best elote I've had in baltimore? I do I do I do :) the corn is cooked perfectly- it's both crunchy and sweet, and they have a great crema to cortija cheese ratio! Tamales: 8/10 I haven't had a tamale in years so I was surprised at how yummy this one was! It had perfect amount of cheese and spice- a tad bit dry but not a deterrent at all, as it comes with your choice of salsa Cremé brûlée: 7/10 - the heart dishes were so cute it wasn't bad at all, but nothing to write home about I sat at the bar, and all of the bartenders were sweet and attentive! Overall the food was good, the ambience was ok, there wasn't many people when we arrived. Nice decorating in the dining area. The service was good. Not sure If I should say this...the guy who assisted us was kind and all, but almos at the end when we where finished with our food ready to order a dessert, the guy was acting a little weird, and looked like he was drunk or drugged; the sound of his voice changed a little. First visit to Papi's. I'm sure some among us would be triggered by the fact Papi's is owned by one of Scandinavian descent. Oh my. It's the end of the world! That said, my son and I converged on Papi's on May the Fourth. It was with us for just 24 hours. Good thing we decided on tonight being Wednesday but this week in particular was sandwiched between Taco Tuesday and Cinco de Mayo! We were seated immediately in the back of the house. Lots of space. I know it'll be packed tomorrow. Papi's has the option of ordering Tacos in a manner one would sushi at a sushi joint. You fill out a slip of paper showing want you want. Taco orders are 2 per. Interesting. Most taco emporiums offer three taco platters. So, would I order two tacos or four? Clever innovation as I believe most would gravitate to the latter. Not us. Not tonight, anyway. Lest I forget, the chips and salsa were excellent. Burritos and enchiladas were our targets. My son ordered Papi's enchiladas with tinga chicken. Yours truly ordered the burrito with chorizo. Food came out quickly. The enchilada platter had a small salad included. No black beans or refrieds on the side. Same applied to my burrito platter. I was able to consume most of the first half of the burrito, loaded with chorizo, lettuce, avocado and other tasty stuff, by hand until it fell apart due to the wonderful chorizo grease. Had to finish the second half by fork. Very tasty especially with the salsa I had. I was pretty much satisfied. My son loved his enchiladas. Maybe I'll try those next visit. Before tip, the bill was just south of $30. Not bad considering a casual meal for two runs in the $25 - $35 range, sans alcohol,in this zip code. Service was very good. My only complaint? I handed server $40 and he returned with a $10 bill. His play worked as I didn't have enough singles to tip in the 20 - 25% range. Well played, server. You got your 33%. Tried it twice - always love Mexican! Wanted to like it. Has a nice vibe, friendly staff, comfy mix of nice family place for dinner but it turns into a bar after 9 type decor. But the food- ugh, mediocre. It's like someone almost gets spicing, but loves wayyyy too much cumin and garlic powder. And loves to puree everything oddly smooth. The salsa, the beans, the guacamole- all super smooth, the guacamole was actually GLOSSY. And the meat...well, saddest part. It's high quality cuts, cooked well...but overly seasoned. Too much cumin, too much dark chocolate in mole, etc. For this type of taco-truck style Mexican, Taco Bravo better choice IMO. read more

Finally got the chance to try Papi's Tacos out in Towson. Love that there is a lot to park in as opposed to the other two Baltimore locations. I went on a Tuesday and took advantage of the lunch special offer! The chips and salsa arrived quickly with the chips in a bag. The taco sheet (pictured) is at the table available to fill out to make your choice. I ordered the authentic style tacos (flour tortilla) with the Short Ribs. They were brought out quickly and while each order is typically two tacos, you get an additional one for FREE each Tuesday from 11am-5pm! I also opted for a side of guacamole for an additional $2. Everything was very flavorful and service was top notch! They also have a loyalty program to sign up for so take advantage of that! With the humongous amount of chips, I ended up packing the rest to take home which worked out great! I will definitely be returning to try out the other food options as well as some drinks at Papi's in Towson soon! Give them a try when you can! read more
