First visit to Papi's. I'm sure some among us would be triggered by the fact Papi's is owned by one of Scandinavian descent. Oh my. It's the end of the world! That said, my son and I converged on Papi's on May the Fourth. It was with us for just 24 hours. Good thing we decided on tonight being Wednesday but this week in particular was sandwiched between Taco Tuesday and Cinco de Mayo! We were seated immediately in the back of the house. Lots of space. I know it'll be packed tomorrow. Papi's has the option of ordering Tacos in a manner one would sushi at a sushi joint. You fill out a slip of paper showing want you want. Taco orders are 2 per. Interesting. Most taco emporiums offer three taco platters. So, would I order two tacos or four? Clever innovation as I believe most would gravitate to the latter. Not us. Not tonight, anyway. Lest I forget, the chips and salsa were excellent. Burritos and enchiladas were our targets. My son ordered Papi's enchiladas with tinga chicken. Yours truly ordered the burrito with chorizo. Food came out quickly. The enchilada platter had a small salad included. No black beans or refrieds on the side. Same applied to my burrito platter. I was able to consume most of the first half of the burrito, loaded with chorizo, lettuce, avocado and other tasty stuff, by hand until it fell apart due to the wonderful chorizo grease. Had to finish the second half by fork. Very tasty especially with the salsa I had. I was pretty much satisfied. My son loved his enchiladas. Maybe I'll try those next visit. Before tip, the bill was just south of $30. Not bad considering a casual meal for two runs in the $25 - $35 range, sans alcohol,in this zip code. Service was very good. My only complaint? I handed server $40 and he returned with a $10 bill. His play worked as I didn't have enough singles to tip in the 20 - 25% range. Well played, server. You got your 33%. He's pulling a double and I'm sure karma will strike on behalf of a cheapskate who doesn't support hard working servers. Well, we will return. Maybe for the tacos. read more

Finally got the chance to try Papi's Tacos out in Towson. Love that there is a lot to park in as opposed to the other two Baltimore locations. I went on a Tuesday and took advantage of the lunch special offer! The chips and salsa arrived quickly with the chips in a bag. The taco sheet (pictured) is at the table available to fill out to make your choice. I ordered the authentic style tacos (flour tortilla) with the Short Ribs. They were brought out quickly and while each order is typically two tacos, you get an additional one for FREE each Tuesday from 11am-5pm! I also opted for a side of guacamole for an additional $2. Everything was very flavorful and service was top notch! They also have a loyalty program to sign up for so take advantage of that! With the humongous amount of chips, I ended up packing the rest to take home which worked out great! I will definitely be returning to try out the other food options as well as some drinks at Papi's in Towson soon! Give them a try when you can! read more

Tried it twice - always love Mexican! Wanted to like it. Has a nice vibe, friendly staff, comfy mix of nice family place for dinner but it turns into a bar after 9 type decor. But the food- ugh, mediocre. It's like someone almost gets spicing, but loves wayyyy too much cumin and garlic powder. And loves to puree everything oddly smooth. The salsa, the beans, the guacamole- all super smooth, the guacamole was actually GLOSSY. And the meat...well, saddest part. It's high quality cuts, cooked well...but overly seasoned. Too much cumin, too much dark chocolate in mole, etc. For this type of taco-truck style Mexican, Taco Bravo better choice IMO. read more

I have been wanting to go here since they opened a few months ago and we were finally able to stop by for carry out. They offer a bunch of different taco options. We got a few different types of tacos- shrimp, carne asada, and short rib. We got the plátanos and two sides of guacamole. All of that, plus tip, was about $50. They automatically put a 15% tip on for carry out, which is no issue at all but you have to actually look at the breakdown of the bill to catch it. I'm sure quite a few people have double tipped because they didn't see it on there. Everything was really good! Of the tacos, my favorite was the carne asada and then the shrimp. I definitely want to go back and eat inside. From the outside it looks like a tiny spot but it is deceiving- the restaurant goes pretty far back. My only complaint is that we called to place the order and were put on hold for close to 5 minutes and we ended up disconnecting because no one ever came back on. We then called again to no answer. We decided to place it online on their website, which uses the toast app. The app charges a fee to use. So I tried to call the restaurant one more time and they answered. The guy was really nice and took our order. It was ready in less than 20 minutes. When we went in they weren't busy, which was surprising as I couldn't get a hold of anyone earlier. The people in front of us were told to grab a table in the bar area. Then two employees walked right by us (with take out food) as we stood waiting to be greeted or acknowledged but neither of them helped us. We've been here twice and enjoy the nachos a lot. They're very flavorful and have lots of toppings. Other food we tried during our two visits was good enough to give four stars, a recommendation, and a third chance. However, nothing was great. The soup was good, but more of stew. The corn was good, but it tasted like regular ole corn. My husband enjoyed his food, but when we ordered take out, 15% gratuity was included in our bill. Maybe we haven't evolved with the time, but we don't tend to tip that high of a percent on carry out orders. The steak tacos were very dry but the chicken tacos were decent and might even be good in the dining room so we will return to re-evaluate the rest of the menu and maybe even some of what we've had in the past, but we will not be ordering take out ever again. read more

This is the 2nd Papi's we have tried, the first in Hampden. This location in Towson feels bigger inside. I like the layout it doesn't feel as claustrophobic. Our server was very nice and immediately took our order. The raspberry tea I found delicious. The Birria Taco's was chock filled with tender stewed meat and lots of gooey cheese. My wife and I had lunch here last weekend and we loved it! We split the Gringo Nachos as an appetizer--and like all of our food for this meal, it was incredibly well-seasoned and well-cooked. We then split tacos, which I believe we ordered with carnitas. Again, very flavorful and delicious. Drink-wise, I had a house margarita and my wife had a sangarita. We both thought they were quite strong when we first got them, but once the ice melted a little bit they were very good! The service was very good overall. They weren't too busy, but our waitress took excellent care of us and got us our order in a timely fashion. The atmosphere is casual and fun--to order your tacos, for instance, you fill out a little slip found on your table. I've been to the two other Papis locations and this is by far my favorite location. It is so clean, esthetically pleasing, staff was incredibly friendly and efficient. I ordered the Baja burrito bowl with chicken and the portion was so huge. Everything was super fresh and flavorful. My husband ordered the birria tacos and they were so delicious. The interior is much bigger than one anticipated and I love the decor... it's absolutely adorable and really feels like Mexico. Unfortunately the food was disappointing. The Elote was standard, nothing to write home about ... the birria tacos were a disappointment; the beef was so tough , chewy and tasteless I had to dump a heap of hot sauce on it for flavor and the fajitas were just ok. The chicken and shrimp were tender and the beef was ok but it was lacking in that they give you three tiny tortillas for a huge platter of mixed meats, the lettuce and pico are boring accompaniments and the beans and rice were Taco Bell level. The food is not good at all. The prices are through the roof for the quality you receive. My boyfriend got a quesadilla and it took over 10 napkins to get the grease off the quesadilla, which he didn't eat because of all the grease. Went to Papi's for the first time with friends Say it right now who had been there before and the service was not great. However on this evening although they were very crowded Eric our waiter gave us phenomenal service street tacos were excellent the margarita selection was broad and they were fresh and well made. The al pastor and chicken pinga tacos were excellent and the short rib tacos. Both authentic and gringo styles were excellent. So good. I got the prickly pear marg, and my boyfriend and i both got the Birria tacos. They were amazing, the stew was delicious and had a great depth of flavor, and the tacos were crisp yet juicy. We also got the churros which were soooo perfect, i.e., fluffy and not too dense. The cajeta was delicious, almost tasted like goat cheese (if you didn't know, cajeta is dulce de leche made with goat's milk instead of cow). It was sweet yet tangy. The first time I went I was amazed they had a separate vegan menu. The food was amazing. The second time I went it was so much worse. The Spanish rice tasted funky like it was old, and food (all of it) was way too salty unlike the first time when the salt levels were good. Presentation was great. Servers the first time were very helpful and kind. I like this location specifically for the parking. It's nice to be able to go somewhere in Towson and not worry about street parking or parking garage near the mall. We sat at the bar because we wanted to get the happy hour specials and were told you could only get them in the bar area. The bartender gave good service and once we placed the order our food came out quickly. The queso was really good and part of their happy hour food menu. Sorry guys, I ate at Papi's in Fells Point many years ago and thought the food was ok, but I was excited to see a local place come to Towson rather than all the chains that plague this town. The setting is nice with the windows open in the bar area, and I found the wait staff to be very friendly, but the food is terrible. Sorry but there isn't a nice way to say it. The tacos (skirt steak) were tastes and bland and the ceviche I had to send back as it was old and smelled. Ceviche has to be fresh fish and seafood. The ceviche does not list fish yet it contained tilapia. I won't eat tilapia cooked let alone marinated raw in lemon juice. Is there not just one good Mexican restaurant in this town? read more
