Grabbed lunch here with my new(ish) bf for a much needed break from fried food. We grabbed 2 sandwiches, a knish, and a side of stuffing, and drove them all up to a look-out point maybe 10 minutes away. When in Williamstown and in search of a lunch spot, I go to Pappa Charlie's. They have a large menu of sandwiches, all named after famous people. You can get a hot sandwich or a cold one. There's ones with turkey, roast beef, tuna fish, vegetarian and even beef gyro. Of course there are more proteins than the ones I just shared. Whatever you're in the mood for, you'll likely find it on their menu and if not, you can create your own (this option is called the Politician, haha). My favorite is the Steven Collins. It has turkey, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, sprouts and Russian dressing. It's served on rye but this time I tried the multigrain instead. The ingredients are simple and fresh. They come together to create a great sandwich. The price is right too. My lunch came out to less than $10. I wasn't so fond of the split pea soup but you might like it. The gazpacho was good and so was the sandwich. I got the Gonzo. A little short on cheese and long on bread but the bread was good and the sprouts and the avocado were fresh and good. An extremely pretentious kid lecturing his father(?) about squash rankings added a little local color. So did the rather rude bearded guy who swept up under your feet and moved you brusquely out of the way to stock the cooler. The gazpacho was fresh and spicy. Husband says good vegetable soup. Looks like your grandparents' deli - tin ceilings, tiny counter, about a thousand sandwich options all with pithy celebrity names. And! It's delicious! The horseradish on my Italian sub cleared my sinuses, the meatball sub my kids got (and I sampled) was exceptional, and the experience was topped off by the kindness of the people behind the counter, as well as their good humored chatting with us and each other. I think I worked up an appetite at the gym so me and my sister stopped by the shop for a sandwitch. I must say the choices are pretty endless, took me a solid 15minutes to decide on a sandwitch. Sometimes you just want a sandwich, right!? My husband was out on a 60 miles bike ride so I decided to scout out a good lunch option for him when he returned. This place has everything. The menu is a bit overwhelming with all of the options, but the quirky sandwiches names are all part of the charm. They're perfectly overstuffed and unique. Best. Sandwiches. Ever. Traveling through New England on an epic college road trip, cross-crossing several states and hitting small towns in each one ... By the time we got to Williamstown we were *starving* .... Pappa Charlie's doesn't look like much from the outside. A little cramped and with a handwritten chalk menu, sandwiches are identified by names of various famous folks (urban legend is that each sandwich was actually created by their namesakes) with the exception of The Politician (get anything you want on it!) The establishment opened in 1976 by "Pappa" Charlie Nikitas. Tradition apparently is for celebrities to visit a few times (not just once) to get a sandwich creation named after them, plus there are a number of pictures and autographs on the wall. Regardless, we had a "Mary Tyler Moore" - an incredibly tasty bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado sandwich. Little did we know, this is apparently one of Pappa Charlie's most popular sandwiches - and we can see why! A small handwritten note on the massive menu adds that none other than MTM herself notified Pappa Charlie's that she'd since turned vegetarian, so patrons can also order the vegetarian MTM if they're feeling inclined to pass on the perfectly crispy strips of bacon. If kiddo ends up going to Williams, I've no doubt this place will become a perennial favorite. Not just for her, but for us when we go visit! read more

I had high hopes walking into this place to grab lunch before work. I walked in and seen a huge list of sandwiches and was immediately blown away with the options. They all seemed a bit strange so I asked "can I just get a ham and cheese to go cold please". Well I guess if you order your own sandwich you should include every topping you want because they do not ask. Sadly I assumed there would be some sort of vegetable or even Mayo or oil but I showed up to work and was greeted to a dry sandwich with literally just ham and cheese on it. I choked half down to get through the rest of my shift but the other half just got trashed. I couldn't even give it away. I also got a slice of baklava as well which was honestly inedible due to the amount of spices. My final purchase was the chicken and rice soup which I have to say was actually pretty good and I have no complaints about. I've been coming to Pappa Charlie's since I was but a wee lass... As one of the only delis in Williamstown, it's kind of your only option but man, do they make it a good option. Fresh veggies, tasty meats, great breads and clever names never cease to please. I'm so old I can remember the original Pappa's, before the "fancy" renovation with new booths and pretty glass windows. WHat I love is that they kept those seedy menu boards, and they're still there to this day. Give yourself time to really look 'em over, and over, and over -- there is something for everyone and no need to make your own. My favorites? Too many to list -- I can always find something to suit my mood, if it's vegetarian, meat-heavy, hot or cold. They also have excellent house-brewed iced tea. You can grab a booth if there's one free, but it's very nice to get your sammy wrapped in paper with a pickle and head outside to picnic in the sun. Or indoors if it's nasty out. I grew up in this adorable little town, and let me tell you - as a kid - Pappa Charlies was the highlight of Spring Street. We didn't have the coffee shops, the ice cream shops, or the toy stores/galleries they have today, but this place has survived the years and is still a Williamstown Staple. The great food is keeping up with the new hoopla that has joined Spring Street. A large majority of the house specialty sandwiches are named after stars and politicians that have eaten there, and it's mostly based off of what they ordered. There is a rather impressive list of clientele - mainly due to the Williamstown Theater Festival that occurs each summer. I'm not sure if they just haven't changed the menu in a while, but it's still the same board that I recall from the 90's. Now, I suppose it's the retro "who's who of 1985 - 1995," but who cares? The sandwiches are AMAZING. Go ahead and order the Scott Wolf (Party of 5 anyone?) or the Blythe Danner. Feeling more adventurous? Get the daughter sandwich of Gwyneth Paltrow. They also have build your own options, salads, bagels, or my favorite as a kid - the foot long hot dog. Yep, they still have it. Not much has changed in those walls - and that is a good thing. The breads, meats, and cheese, are all good deli quality. You may be overwhelmed attempting to find the equivalent of ham-and-cheese, but it's there. I really want to like this place because there are not many places to eat in Williamstown, and I like sandwiches and small interdependent business like this one, BUT every single time I get a sandwich from this place it tastes like ... nothing, like water, so very bland. I try to make out the taste of the turkey or the avocado or the cheese, but they have almost zero flavor. I'm guessing this is because the quality of the ingredients is low? Almost zero flavor for $7-$9? I guess if you're really hungry it could be worth it. If someone blindfolded me and put a piece of Pappa Charlie's turkey in my mouth, I wouldn't be able to guess what it was. (And my taste buds function properly!) I think if you like this place will depend on how experienced you are with sandwiches. If you've eaten sandwiches at a variety of different places, you'll be disappointed with Pappa Charlie's. Love, love, love this place. It is a bit of a hidden gem in the area. The menu is almost endless. The food from burgers, to omelets, to sandwiches are all great. The interior of the deli is, fresh, inviting and welcoming. The staff are always so patient, helpful (as the menu is so long), and polite. This is one of my two favorite places in Williamstown to eat. The prices for their food are extremely inexpensive, especially considering it is literally next door to and surrounded by the exclusive & upscale Williams College. Given how wonderful the food is, they could easily charge a lot more, even if they were not next door to Williams. If you are passing through, back home for a visit, a Williams student or parent, this is the place to go. It is also close to many other shops & the US Post Office, all in the same block. Found this place off Yelp when we suddenly got hungry, but had just passed through Troy, NY on our way to North Adams Mass. It was one of those finds where you praise technology (and yelp). The sandwiches are excellent, all named after famous people. I got the politician, which is a "build your own", but would have liked to get the Mary Tyler Moore (but veggie). Fantastic. First of all, it's just a great place to go to... The humorous menu includes sandwiches named after the most bizzare list of actors and actresses you've ever seen... (I mean, do Eric Stoltz, Frank Langella, and Judge Reinhold really need their own sandwiches???) That said, yeah, we had the Frank Langella (Call me a hypocrite). It was unique, tasty, and cheap! They have a small sit down area inside, or you can just eat it in your car, like we did :).
