Worst experience in Bennington! Do not patron if you enjoy any level of hospitality & actual value. I came in cheerful & this guy ruined the day... I ended up leaving angry and literally cried.... Their online ordering has a Reuben with an option for $2 extra meat & a note box so I cld have written there asking for the extra portion on the side. EASY. Yet, I went in person to see what the specials were hoping for a great lunch, because Im here for medical procedures at the hospital and had fasted since the day before. Id never been to The Elm Street Market before, but it was close to the hospital, & love Vermont markets for all the years I have lived here. But THIS place :: T E R R I B L E mistake! The employee at the counter was as fake & uncaring as it gets, & shld definitely not be the customer guy. He would not just let the added side be $2 , but wanted to weigh it out & charge me for a deli style $6 sliced side in a package as an addition to the $14 sandwich. ($20 Reuben?!) I said I didn't need or expect a package of sliced cold meat, that I was just adding the side portion to share with my pups. For Lunch. He just becomes patronizing, dense, & fully lacking capacity or willingness to help and says he "can't bc it just doesn't work that way" unless I get it on the sandwich. I cld order it online but not with him at register. And for some reason he cant figure out a $2 portion of meat. Surreal Incompetence. The next level of downhill not-so-fun is seeing the tiny soup. A cup of soup for $8. A latte "special" that I cld not even taste the smoked maple flavor and was only 3/4 full. It's actually shocking- what happened to actually CARING about just helping ppl have a good experience if you are working in the restaurant business as a small local independent market? Hey Elm Street Market Fella, you cld do the simplest things like not try ripping ppl off & being kind! His patronizing attitude & lack of capacity really took it over the top- how am I supposed to enjoy this $36 ordeal? Supposedly he is refunding the meat, bc I explained I didn't order a package of meat. He took it out of bag & literally said "take your sandwich & drink & go". I was upset~ I said this is truly unacceptable ~ try some Kindness & Authenticity! And left. The other young lady who was working that day & witnessed this whole debacle seemed to feel bad making 'Im So Sorry' faces. She at least offered me a dollop of maple syrup & noted the drink was not filled~ but also was being oppressed by his attitude. I cld tell he was being an overbearing tyrant. Wtf - this is NOT Vermont as it should be DUDE. All it took was putting a few slices on the side for $2 & filling up a drink. Ridiculous. read more

Stopped here on our trip from NJ to NH for some lunch and a stretch - and really happy we did. I ordered an Ethan Allen wrap and my wife ordered a maplelicious. My first impression was it was a tad on the pricey side but it was worth it. They were both really generous portions, and (though it sounds silly) they were both super well constructed and wrapped with care. The curried chicken salad mixed with the goat cheese was a great combo and it filled us up really well. It was a gorgeous day and we ate outside on a picnic bench with our dog and were able to enjoy the sun, the food, and stretch our legs in a nice quiet area. We both really appreciated how clean the entire property was and how nice the employees were. We will definitely mark this spot on our list for future trips to NH! read more

We really liked our lunch here. This is not just a sandwich shop - they have plenty of drinks, market supplies, basically everything you'd need for a picnic. They have a nice covered patio area on one side of the building and plenty of tables inside, so you can eat there too if you want. You can't sit unless the weather is fair, but their sandwiches are primo! Friendly and the music is awesome.They're very accomodating concerning sandwich tweaks. Want avocado on your sandwich? You got it. Roast beef? No. For beef, they have only London broil. But, they carry only Boar's Head meats. That's good! Good stuff. The sandwiches are generous. One sub is probably enough for two, which makes a reasonably priced, healthy meal for two. But please! I wish you would stay open until about 5:30, sp folks getting off work can buy an order of the delicious goods at East Street Market. P.S. Homemade pies would be excellent. read more

A friendly, welcoming staff and delicious food in a charming atmosphere. What more could I possibly ask for?

Food was pretty good. We ordered The Mayor Mark and The Mad Hatter. They were out of the pretzel buns for The Mad Hatter so we got it on white bread which is more traditional anyway. The Mad Hatter was a 8/10. Perfectly cooked crispy bacon that didn't have any stringy grisly bits that can sometimes happen with bacon. Shredded lettuce is a great choice so everything just perfectly comes apart easily into a delicious bite in your mouth. The Mayor Mark was 5/10 but I didn't care for the taste of the particular avocados that were used. I'm from California and am a little picky when it comes to my avocados (Hass from Mexico are my go-to). 10/10 on the quantity of meat in both sandwiches though. The market side of the store is very niche and had a quaint feel with unique items. Definitely a great little place to stop and eat. Would like to see indoor seating as the only tables were outside and it was snowing so we took our food to go. read more

Yelp never lets me down, man. I was riding through this town on an unmapped road trip with my mom, when we decided we wanted to satiate our tummies before the long haul back to Philly. My mom and I dropped nearly $60 here, because the staff was so lovely and everything looked delicious. The Elm Street Market is located in what seems to be an old, quaint home - one you'd see in a Harry Connick Jr. movie. In my opinion, there's nothing better in this world that a well-made sandwich and ESM does it! It's every thing you could ever want in a deli - and more! I'm talking: eat-off-the-floor clean, every bottled beer, water, or soft drink you can think of, unique Vermont souvenirs, a warm, welcoming staff, and fresh ingredients. Fantastic deli. Really good quality. Great staff. Really clean and comfortable. Outdoor seating. Lots of neat specialty and for Mont items. Was picking up my partners new to her car and wanted to stop someplace for a nice lunch. Our big criteria was that we could eat outdoors. Checked out the yelp reviews and decided this was the spot. Yelp did not steer me wrong, as usual. Was greeted very cheerfully by the staff. We took a little bit of time to figure out what we wanted and they were very patient. Once we ordered they told us to go outside and they would bring us out our food. The staff was fully masked as were all the patrons when we were there. We settled at a table on the porch and had some chai and coffee while we waited. The food came out quickly and was very filling and delicious. I also purchased some Vermont made shortbread cookies and they were exquisite. Very happy! Will definitely stop again! read more

Small deli with outdoor seating only which was perfect for our visit during the late spring. We were assisted by the Owner who was welcoming fun and easy to talk with. The deli is neat, clean and well stocked with the extras which we chose to accompany our meal. The ingredients in our Ruben and Mapelicious sandwiches were fresh, the bread was not heavy and the sandwiches were both satisfying and tasty. Solid stop on the way home from Mt Snow that also gives you an opportunity to drive through this cool little town. Definitely an earthy type deli with a great beer and wine selection as well as some goods I've never set eyes on (i.e. a Denver based chocolate company, Hammond's). They are proud Boar's Head purveyors, but I ended up with curry chicken salad in a wrap topped with chevre and sprouts. For the $8-$9 it was huge and weighed what seemed to be close to 10lbs. Other sandwiches were the basics with great twists like an avocado spread and I want to say garlic aioli. The curry chicken salad itself was delicious. A nice touch of curry, a little creamy and the portion size was huge. The thick layer of chevre was overkill (I'd probably just opt for chicken salad in a container next time). I appreciate they didn't cheap out on cheese, but I mean there was a lot and I'm not quite sure it complimented the curry flavor. A clean bathroom for customers, plenty of seating outside, with a few tables in making it a perfect spot for lunch in warm or cold months. A successful roadside stop if you ask me! read more

I opted for the Mayor Mark which was delicious Boars Head turkey, lettuce, avocado, mayo, and cheese on toasted white bread. Incredible! Thank goodness I didn't opt for a salad or I would have missed out on the deliciousness of this sandwich! My husband ordered the ESM, which was roast beef, London broil caramelized onions, honey Horseradish served on a pretzel brioche bun. Excellent choice. It's also a small little grocery store with some items you might need to pick up like milk, ice cream, chips, crackers, etc. I wish they had a shop like this closer to home for us, we'd make it part of our regular rotation.
