I was visiting Houston from out of town, so barbecue was at the top of my list to get when I got here. Upon entering Pappa's my friend an I noticed some cops and we immediately knew something was up. Us reaching the counter and ordering was delayed about 30 minutes because cops were trying to get a customer out of the restaurant because he was angry they got his order wrong or something. However, the inside of Pappas is like ordering at chipotle where you can see all the foods they have to offer and then you pick from there. They also have ample seating if you want to sit down and eat. But now let's get to the food! The brisket was a good 7. Good taste and se!asoning but a little tough for my liking. THE RIBS!!!! Omg the ribs. The taste was BOMB. Sweet and savory and damn near didn't need any sauce. It was sooo good, probably like a 9.5/10. The sides were subpar, but kinda as expected with a barbecue spot. I was the last customer entering this Pappas Bar-B-Q restaurant at the corner of Pierce and San Jacinto. I was grateful that they allowed me to sit down to enjoy my meal when the dining room was closed. It was chilling because the chairs were on the tables instead of looking amongst people. I ordered whatever they had left with 2 sides. It was pulled pork, green beans and mashed potatoes. I took a bite of the pork. Yuk, so salty. I decided to eat my sides and took the pork home to make it into another dish with cabbage I would return. Especially it's conveniently located on the edge of downtown and near major thoroughfares. Solid four stars! Rudy is an absolute pro and very personable! Great guy running the spot. Food: I went with the trio and it was solid. The real winner here is the most brisket. Their more brisket is pretty amazing. The sausage was OK. Not bad, but it was pretty good. Kind of middle of the road sausage. The first rib that I got was extremely hard, it was overcooked and hard to eat, thankfully they were able to swap it out and give me a new one. It was much better. The jambalaya or Cajun rice was amazing. The potato salad was really good as well. The pecan pie was probably my favorite. Oh my god that is simply amazing.! Great overall customer service. Worked downtown for ages but never came here until now when I moved out of town. Loved the pulled pork po-boy. Had some glaze going on top of the bun. I was going to get a regular bun but when I saw someone else get this I had to. They ran out of banana parfait so we got the chocolate which was tasty. My kid hates bbq. I know. She didn't grow up here. Forgive her. So she got a kids grilled cheese which comes with fries and a drink and hit the spot for her. Urinal has a surprise on top. For Texas BBQ, this was fairly middling. I expected much more from the chain considering it comes from the same family as Papacito's and Papaduex's. Not to mention it's in TEXAS! I had the combination platter so I could try a little bit of everything (rib, sausage, and brisket). The brisket was good. The other meats were meh. My sides were the cucumber salad and yams (undercooked). Nobody wants a big crunchy yam. The restaurant seating area was dirty. There was food and trash still in the area where people had eaten. The tables had been cleared but the floors still had trash and food on them. It was not a good first impression. read more

I purchased the one meat salad which I'd don't several times throughout the years. So, I'll admit, it's been a while since I'd gotta a salad from Pappas. I don't mind pay for good food..as long as I get my money's worth. The salad was $15 and it was more like a side salad... no joke! In the past, the salad were in a regular to-go container. Does everyone here know that Pappas Bar-B-Q has breakfast tacos?! You should know and you SHOULD order them! It was my turn to pick out the breakfast tacos for the office and instead of the same (yummy Mexican) place we have had in the last few months, I picked Pappas. Called in about 7:30 AM to place the order over the phone (you can place online, but they have a limit to how many tacos you can order online). Calling in the order was easy. They told me my order should be ready in about an hour. I drove the the location and got behind three cars in the drive-thru line. When I got to the speaker, I let them know I was picking up a phone order for Allison. When I pulled up to the window, the worker informed me they were finishing my order. I waited maybe 10-15 minutes total in the line, including paying for my order. I was sad for the car behind me that tried to order bacon and egg tacos.... they had to inform them that they sold out of bacon (oops, that was me). Food: The tacos were large, delicious, and served with fresh salsa! I ordered different combinations of tacos with bacon, egg, cheese, brisket, sausage links, and potatoes. This location is always on point every time I have come. The employees have been very pleasant each time. Food is always fresh and no issues with my orders. The breakfast tacos have definitely shrinked over the years but still delicious. I think it's really nice of this location to offer customers to order online and they come out. My location does not offer this service. You can order online but you must pickup in the drive through. With this location offering this, it helps with foot traffic or those using public transportation to easily grab a healthy breakfast on the way to work or appointments or whatever. The outside patio is a plus as well. Very convenient and affordable. read more

Why is the drive-thru so damn slow, especially in the morning?! The food is great, but the wait is ridiculous.

I went twice in a week while on a work trip. Both times with a group of people. You order through the line, tell them what meat you want, select your sides, get your drink, then pay. So efficient overall and people are pretty nice. However, neither times were issues free, hence the 4 stars. On the first visit, I ordered two meats - brisket and sausage. Sausage was good but brisket was pretty dry. Since I was mainly there for the brisket, that should mean I wouldn't be back. HOWEVER, I saw someone in my group got brisket that looked juicy and amazing! I guess I happened to get the end pieces which were not amazing. Because I saw the potential, I had to go back! When I returned again, I just ordered the brisket and asked for the center, fatty cut. This time, it was amazing. So good! However, at the register, they asked if i would like to order a Jalapeño roll. So I did. They told me they would bring it to me at the table. At the end of my meal, someone asked me where was the roll I ordered? I was like, oh yeah, they never did bring it to me, did they? So I went to the line to ask and was told they were out. Okay...nobody thought they should communicate that to the customer that already paid for it? Thought that was kind of interesting. read more

I went to pick up some To Go bbq for lunch and Pappas Bar-B-Q was just what I needed. The ribs were excellent (tender, tasty and delicious) my flavor palette was pleased. The sides were Mac and cheese along with Texas dirty rice. Well some dirty rice I've had had been undercooked or overbooked but the rice was cooked just as it was supposed to be. The Mac and cheese was good and cheesy. The icing on the cake was the large soft chocolate chip cookie for dessert. I will most certainly be back for more especially since the service given by the cashier and the person preparing my order was just as good as my food. All of the food had a good flavor but really was not as tender as you would like good bbq to be, especially in Texas. The sauce was a little too sweet for me also. The Mac and cheese was really good. This place used to be great. Emphasis on used. Visit #1: My change was 22¢. The drive-thru employee hands me two dimes (20¢) and says, "We don't have pennies." When I asked for the remaining change, I was told they can't give a nickel either... because apparently keeping customers' money is now policy. After pointing out that pennies are still legal currency, I finally got my nickel. Visit #2 (because apparently I enjoy disappointment): I paid with a card to avoid another math lesson. Same employee. He tries to hand me two drinks I didn't order. When I said no, he asked if I wanted something else instead. No--I wanted a refund. He then sighed and said he didn't know how to refund, but asked if I still wanted one anyway. Then came the total: $49.76 for a barbecue sandwich and a brisket plate. No drinks. No dessert. Just sticker shock. After 15 minutes at the window, I was double-charged, then credited for one charge--but never refunded for the two drinks I never ordered. Three days later, it's still unresolved. If this is happening to me, it's happening to others. Rounding, overcharging, confusion, and zero accountability. Pappas is supposed to be a respected company. This location is damaging that reputation--one nickel at a time. Oh one more issue... no barbecue sauce? No ketchup and no silverware! Come on guys...$50 for a meal the least you could do is make sure the silverware and barbecue sauce is in the bag. Too expensive! read more

Was craving some southern Houston style barbecue and ordered the beef trio. I ordered to go so didn't really get to experience the service or ambience however, the food was packaged greatly. The macaroni and cheese that I ordered as a side was OK didn't really exceed my expectations. I also ordered french fries on the side and the amount was charming lol. It came in a big french fry box, but only included third of the size. Now for the beef trio, this was OK if the scale was out of 10 I would give it a five. Did not blow my mind as I was hoping but just make sure I was full enough. Not sure if I'll check out this place again. But definitely will check out if I have no other options. Definitely think sides need to be properly distributed. read more

This place is in the middle of Houston. We were a little reluctant to try it, but on a recommendation from one of our students we went there for an early dinner today. Our student was "right on" with the recommendation. This would have been a five star review, except a couple of our ribs were just a little bit overdone. When we walked in we could smell the BBQ! We had no idea as to what to order. One of the women (actually a very young woman) stepped from behind the service line to help us out. That helped make my day as I had no idea what to order! That is great customer service. Two of us shared the "Family Board." It was more food than we could eat. The bill, including the cantaloupe cooler (non-alcoholic) only came to a couple of pennes over $60 for two of us. We could only eat half of the meal. Another member of our party ordered the two meat combo with ribs and sausage. It came with a loaded baked potato. I do not know how she ordered the meal, but had enough food for two or more. I have no idea as to why this place is not rated higher than the "Pit Room," but based on the food, cleanliness of the establishment, and degree of service, it should be. We thoroughly enjoyed our early dinner, and will enjoy the leftovers shortly! read more

A fine luncheon post, directly across the street from Nicole Cathedral of Galveston in Houston on Saint Joseph Street. I tried the catfish sandwich, but forgot to ask him to hold the pickles and the tartar sauce I am thoroughly enjoying the freshness of the meal train splashed with someone overdone fries and sumptuous cocktail sauces I feel this place was reasonably priced, and I am hear of a July 3 afternoon pleasantly crowded, but you could hear yourself above the conversations. The manager noticed and stopped to make some recommendations. He was helpful and very friendly. This restaurant has a very welcoming feeling. I had the pulled pork plate. The port was tender and juicy. I was surprised to see something other than the usual fountain drinks. They had a watermelon drink as well as a cantaloupe one. Every year we order from Papa's barbecue for our Thanksgiving and Christmas company meals . They never disappoint. They're always on time and everything is ready to go, but the time I get there, they even took it to your car, which makes it super easy for me and they started doing the checkout right by the door for the to go order it so much faster than it's ever been to get it taken care of. My review get 5 stars for food AND service. I was on standby downtown and did not resist the temptation to have lunch at Pappas BBQ. A chop beef baked potato dry, xtra cheese and butter, cucumber salad, watermelon to drink and that there chunky looking jalapeño was my order. One thing I have to compliment Pappas BBQ on is TABLES are constantly being cleaned as guest leave.
