I have to say pappys has exceeded my expectations, food is good and my family really likes it which surprises me because they can be picky. They have big portions some plates you can probably share there are a good variety of meals to choose from. I recommend the fish and chips or for breakfast their chicken fried steak and gravy. This place sucks. The lady said she was too busy to take my order. I'm by myself at the counter. She's complaining that she wants to leave and she'll all have to wait until another server starts in five minutes to take my order of bacon and eggs. She finally took the order and then never put it in and said she was just too busy. The place is dirty. It's unorganized and the other server saw what we're going on and never helped out. read more

Found Papp'ys restaurant completely by accident. Walking through the front door was like being transported back in time to the 60/70s. The food was great, the staff was friendly and the nostalgia was off the scale. Sat at the bar enjoying a hot cup of coffee watching the semi-truck rolling past the picture window. Pappys is hit and miss. It is a no frills, old-fashioned diner with true Santa Maria (cowtown) decor. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner the service is always good, and the people are friendly. Breakfast is always good, but otherwise, the food is unpredictable. Take tonight, for instance. My hubby had the sirloin steak sandwich and loved everything about it. I had the salmon dinner, and it was awful. The best thing about it was the garlic bread. The salmon was overcooked, the vegetables were hard and unseasoned, and the mashed potatoes had an off taste. Like I said, it's hit and miss. We will go back again and hope we make the right choice next time! read more

I have been going here for years. I recently went back and it was as good as ever. My go to is the Chicken Fried Steak Breakfast. Everything was perfect. They take a tenderized steak and bread it in a very thin coating. It has the gravy under the steak. Very unusual but it is now my preferred way to enjoy a Chicken Fried Steak. The eggs were done just as I ordered, over easy, and the hash browns were hot and crispy. The Sour Dough Toast was perfectly toasted and with just the right amount of butter applied. They really know what they are doing in the kitchen. And the staff are always friendly and kept my Iced Tea full. I even got smiles from those that were not serving me and asked if I wanted a Tea refilled. They really know how to take care of a patron. The Chicken Fried Steak Dinner is just as good as the breakfast. It comes with perfectly cooked veggies, Mashed Potatoes and a salad. If you are traveling through the area or if you live in the area and haven't been here, take the time and go see for yourself why this place is so popular. A friend recommended we stop at Pappy's for a meal while driving up the coast. We split a tri-tip sandwich with fries and each got a large side salad with wonderful blue cheese dressing! The tri-tip is served with salsa on the side. It was delicious on the sandwich. First time I've eaten it that way. I will definitely be back. Brought my family to Pappy's 101 Diner. The food was mediocre, the service was bad, and the cleanliness was poor. First, I order the Tri Tip Salad with Italian dressing. When the salad arrived, I poured the Italian dressing, however, there was Ranch dressing at the bottom of the salad. It turned the salad into soup. Second, the waitress seemed bothered every time we asked for napkins or silverware. Third, the place seems run down. While in the restaurant, a flee bit me. My advice, go somewhere else. read more

Came for the California Omelet, Pappy's was the first I remember ever having this dish and I remember it being out of this world! Well, it didn't come up to my expectations. First off it was not hot, more like lukewarm, I tried putting on the sour cream and salsa on tip and glad I didn't put all over because it got that section cold. On the remaining omelet I put Tabasco sauce so it would remain at least semi warm. The home fried potatoes were very oily, couldn't eat them all and the coffee was warm, I tried to down the coffee and get another refill but it too was warm, finally I had the Gentleman get me the coffee and he got me the fresh cup, I saw what the other associate was doing and what she did was get other coffees from other pots and place them all in one pot so that's why the coffee was warm. During the first order I had asked for a cup of tortilla soup and she flat out said no, not yet. While we waited I saw that another customer came in and ordered a bowl of tortilla soup, the associate looked toward the kitchen and said, yes we got some, I said "oh well" Later my wife said she wanted a cinnamon roll to take home, I told her to order it when they serve the food. The food was being served and my wife asked for the cinnamon roll, the associate said no we don't have any, mind you, there was never an apology, just no to whatever they didn't have. Then I said "could I get that cup of tortilla soup" like that other guy, she said, "oh you want to order a cup of tortilla soup?" I said please, she said ok. I never got it. When we were done we had to keep raising our hand and get her attention to get our receipt. I still left a 15% tip. Oh the best part of the meal was the biscuit. read more

There simply isn't a better breakfast available in town! Well worth it for most any breakfast you could want. Their omelets are terrific, their hash browns are terrific, your coffee never runs out, proportions fill the plate, and the service is great. With such attributes it's best to avoid peak times or come with some patience. You won't be the only one that knows they'll get a really really good breakfast! I have one negative... ALL the tables have ceiling fans over them. For those that get migraines from flickering lights, you can only avoid this by sitting at the counter instead of a table. My wife has this issue so I go without her! Yes, it's that good! read more

What's interesting when you walk into Pappys I found out if you sit on the right hand side, the service is very good. You sit on the left-hand side of the restaurant. The server was very apathetic and rude with me and my friend since the moment were sat down. And she was nice with everyone else except us. We noticed this pretty quickly. I'm not sure what we did but it was like she was trying to get us out of her face as fast as she could. I'm not going to throw around the "racism" word here, but I will tell you my friend and I were the only black people in the establishment while everyone else was white (excluding the cooks who were Mexican). So do with this information what you will. The food on the other hand was decent. Until we got to desert: I got the Bread Pudding. It tasted like onions. We were gapoy to find a restaurant that had comfortable seating and this was the place. Not only great service and food.

First off I'm beyond blown away that this restaurant doesn't have a 5 star across the board. If you like tri tip this is the spot. I have passed this place for decades and finally stopped in one day about 10 years ago. The waitress suggested the Tri Tip Torta which is not on the menu. Not the way I would think to eat tri tip having lettuce, tomatoes, onion, jalapenos and may on a roll. But holy Toledo it's AMAZING! We haven't been here in a few years and stopped Friday on a trip to go camping. Popped in to grab dinner to go because we were gonna arrive too late to cook at our campsite. We even ordered the bread pudding and the tri tip salad. WOWSERS it didn't disappoint at all. We are picky when we spend money on eating out so darn it it better be good. You better bet anytime I come through Santa Maria I will be stopping here again for a very long time. The best part too is not just the food but the feeling of an old small town cafe. Everyone is friendly and the service is great. If you are looking for true traditional Santa Maria style tri tip this is the place. I thought everything was excellent. Boyfriend had the chicken fried steak breakfast and I got the red snapper and clam chowder. The clam chowder was served a little lukewarm, but the flavor was good and it had large chunks of bacon and clam. I ordered the red snapper based on a photo I saw on yelp. As a trucker, there are very few opportunities for eating fish, so when I saw it, I was set on ordering it. It was not on the menu, but it was written on a black chalkboard hanging up, along with salmon. The fish was flaky and tasted fresh. I've never had fish cooked in pico de gallo before but it worked. The portion was very generous and it came with a huge serving of vegetables as well. I added some salt, but I basically add salt to everything. It was a very satisfying light, clean, and healthy meal. The chicken fried steak was different than what we've had. When it first arrived, we both thought it looked a little dark. I was expecting it to taste a little burnt, but it didn't! It just looks that way. It was very meaty, and the texture of the meat was also different. It wasn't that soft sort of ground meat texture, it was like a piece of carne asada meat was battered then fried. It had more of a steak-y chew and flavor. He enjoyed it very much. The gravy was delicious as well and also had large chunks of bacon in it, I like the way this place thinks ;) The hash browns were perfectly crispy! To address the comments about the air, it is pretty stuffy in there and it also did a number on my clothes and hair. After I left I smelled like I had been standing over a fryer all day. Not a big deal for most, but if you have breathing problems maybe not a good idea. Our server was friendly, warm, and genuine. All staff we interacted with were very nice! Very glad we tried this place out! Next time we're here we will definitely try the tri tip sandwich so many other reviewers mentioned! read more

This place has the best bacon. I'm from out of town and my boyfriend's parents brought us here since this is where they go every Sunday morning for breakfast. Apparently this place has been around for 50+ years. When we walked in, there were original video games and western decor. My boyfriends dad told us that the original owner sold the place to a successful franchise owner who made no changes to the place. The parking lot was completely full, but our party of four was sat right away and we received prompt friendly service. I ordered the egg and bacon combo which also came with home fries and a biscuit. I got 5 large pieces of super crispy bacon, eggs cooked perfectly, and the rest of the order was scrumptious. Everyone's order was huge and made exactly how they ordered it. Our food came within 10 minutes and coffee was strong and piping hot!! I pursued the rest of the menu which looked just as good for this type of establishment. This place gets 5 stars for being prompt, clean, friendly, having large portions, meeting expectations, and have damn good bacon. I usually cannot get bacon how I want it. read more
