Came for some warm biscuits and gravy on a cold and rainy day. It came with a lot of biscuits (3 cut into half, so 6 pieces), but not the same gravy ratio to ensure I could eat each bite of biscuit with gravy. Personal preference. Server was slow, and there were two occasions when I wanted a refill on my drink but I had to wait for her to finish flirting with one of the patrons at the counter. Twice! Always a solid classic American diner style breakfast. The pancakes are large and fluffy and tasty. The coffee is decent and they keep your cup filled. My first time here since it's been rebought and of course we had to order more than we could eat to try a bite of everything and I'll have to sayyy. We have found our new little spot. It's a hole in the wall place , but a gem. The service was great, super nice and didn't judge when I ordered a whole lotta food for 2 ppl. (We didn't eat all the food. lol just a bite here and there if not more lol ) the food and service was great. I love the look of the interior. Takes you back to a place of nostalgia where gas was $1.10 and little Richie playing on a speaker. My only one lack of star is bc I couldn't relax on the booth. The person sitting behind me would lean back and the back of the chair we both sat I was just pressing against each other. It was playing tug o war towards each other with our backs. lol. Summary: Stay away from The Boys restaurant. The food is decent and came out quick. As I paid the bill, I very politely questioned my server charged me $6.50 for whip cream for my child's pancakes. She explained to me that it is "common sense that dairy-based product cost more." I paid my tab but then asked her why wouldn't she disclose that as it seems a bit excessive. She responded that it "wasn't her job plus I don't care. It's your kid's fault for not asking me what the charge was since it wasn't on the menu. It goes both ways." She also told me to teach my kids common sense. I started talking to the more mature woman working at the register expressing my frustration and the server got in my face and began berating me loudly. We did get into a an argument now because I was tired of getting screamed at. She told me that the other lady there working there doesn't know anything. The older lady apologized and said she was the managers mom and is only there once a week to help. I could tell she was embarrassed. She tried to refund me the price of the whip cream. Other patrons also stepped in to de-escalate the situation. The server made sure to let it be known to all of them that it was my fault as well. Pretty embarrassing all around to be a part of. My grandma and grandpa have been taking me to The Boys since I was a little girl. The place has not changed one bit and that's a good thing. We have taken our children there and I can't wait to take our grandchildren here. I love that you can get a breakfast that taste just as good as 40 years ago. Their biscuits are just as fluffy and their French toast taste just like my grandmothers. The chicken fried steak is some of the best around and I am a CFS snob. I was raised that chicken fried steak is hand breaded and fried in a cast-iron skillet. The gravy is spicy enough that it really doesn't need any hot sauce but it didn't stop me from putting it on. It really is a 10 star establishment. I hope it's still around 40 years from now. read more

Tasty chow, old school environs and friendly service -- enough said. We don't normally find ourselves in this part of town on a weekend morning, so that is my excuse for not getting here for, oh, 5 or 6 years. My bad. As plenty of other Yelpers have noted, this establishment is "old school". The building and "Restaurant" sign are easily 50 years old, and the inside décor matches, though the counter stools and booths are in great shape and the place is very clean. Service was very friendly from the moment we were greeted/seated, and our order was promptly noted and delivered within minutes. Waitress had a smile throughout, and we never once wanted for refills or extra napkins, as she was very attentive to all customers. Nice. Best part? When she set my toast down, she looked at it and said, "Oh, the toast looks a little well-done. Can I take it away and get you some more?" When was the last time that happened?? The chow? My wife thought her French toast (she asked for raisin bread for a slightly extra fee) was the best she had in awhile: slightly crunchy exterior, with a creamy, custard-like center. I had the chicken fried steak and eggs. Gravy was very good: not too thick, and not watered down, and not salty-- just right. Steak shared the "just right" moniker, as it was tender and juicy. I especially liked the hash browns, which I requested crispy. They were just that, and soft in the middle -- about perfect. Good chow is worth the visit; excellent service earns a 4th star . . . Based upon reviews on the husbands Samsung he picked this place.... once we sat down I began to look at Yelp, more than anything I like photos first then reviews. If it doesn't look appealing then I'm not in. Hubs ordered Bacon & Egg Combo and son ordered French Toast. After looking at photos I decided not to order.... and just go grab something later I knew I'd enjoy. Bacon & Egg combo comes with hashbrowns and toast. Hubs ordered white toast and was given 1 strawberry and 1 grape jelly. French Toast came w/bacon and eggs. Bacon was a bit crispy - plain Jane. Kid ordered scrambled eggs, said they tasted like hotel eggs. I ended up eating a piece of the hubs bacon and a piece of toast. Nothing special....but that's because he ordered white toast and I'm not a real fan of strawberry or grape in packets. Hubs and I both ordered iced tea; they brew it fresh daily. My family and I go to the boys restaurant for lunch as often as we can. I've tried the crispy chicken salad, and it is very good this time I had a bacon cheeseburger also was great. The service of the boys is always fantastic. Great young lady is on top of whatever you need. Also some young man that help out with drinks and cleaning off the table. I hadn't been here in decades so I decided to get in there and relive the old times. I ordered the special: 2 eggs scrambled, home style potatoes, 2 biscuits with sausage on top covered with gravy. The eggs were nice and yellow and tasty. The biscuits were a little dry, the sausage not bad and gravy not bad. I've had better biscuits and gravy elsewhere. Now don't let the home style potatoes fool you as regular looking but with the onions and bell peppers it had a great taste, one of the best home style potatoes I've eaten in a long time. There is a great story on how the owner acquired the business on back of the menu and it makes me think back on how The Boys restaurant had its own controversies, but nonetheless it was a great restaurant. I moved 15 miles south to Nipomo over three years ago. I heard radio spots for The Boys, but every time I drove west on Main Street to College AveI never saw the restaurant. Today I used the GPS in my iPhone and saw that its sign was hidden by a Pizza franchise facing Main St. I turned north at the light on College and pulled into The Boys parking lot. It was about 10:30 and I had been fasting for a med test since the night before. Their long counter had just one customer. i grabbed a seat and I said yes to a cup of coffee. Knowing I just wanted ham and hashbowns, I was overwhelmed by their breakfast menu. Wow, they also make my favorite bacon waffles? I'm allergic to egg. I saw on "Sides", Ham, Hashbrowns, Toast. Then looked across the page at "Ham & Eggs with hashbrowns and a selection of toasts and English muffins." I've found it's always cheaper to order the special and "hold the eggs". My oval plate arrived with one half full of golden brown hashbrowns along side a huge, 1/4" thick slice of ham. It was then that I noticed '50s and '60s rock 'n roll playing in the back ground. Has "The Boys" restaurant been in Santa Maria back since when they only had one high school? You'll have to go in and ask them. You won't be disappointed. read more

Breakfast is served all day long and the restaurant is located just a couple blocks from the freeway, bonus. Bacon is always perfect, omelets are just the right size, toast is a bit "eh" in my opinion... but overall an okay breakfast. Corned beef hash is like a slice of canned dog food plopped on your plate but does have nice flavor. You can special order any way you want, but you're not necessarily going to get it the way you asked. Iced tea is really good, but if you want any refills on it (or coffee), you're gonna have to wait on that too.... your meals and drinks are dropped off and then it's rare that the waitress comes back until you ask for your check. But the staff is definitely friendly and fun when they are around. Although this may seem like a bad review, it's really not, the place is good, it's just not out-of-this-world or anything extraordinary.
