I'm not really into ethnic food. My idea of exotic cuisine involves adding pineapple to a pepperoni pizza. However, on a picturesque summer evening earlier this week, I decided to test life on the wild side. I was rooming around Salem like I often do; thinking about everything but then again I was thinking about nothing. Then it appeared, just like an oasis, but not at all, really. A Turkish restaurant nestled among willow trees on ghost alley? My initial reaction was excitement but soon after, reluctance crept in as it so often does. Do I have what it takes (?), I thought. I decided to go for it and let me tell you: I was so glad i did! The food is great and so are the prices. My favorite part of Paprika Grill is the little patio they've set up. It's a hidden jewel for people watching and zoning out on a nice summer or fall evening. Props to Paprika Grill for having lower food prices than many other downtown Salem establishments. Went for the first time today and it was excellent! Got a Döner Kebab bowl, with tsaziki, onions, cucumber & tomatoes, which was over rice. Others in my group got the Lamb or Chicken Adana either over a salad or as part of a bowl, and enjoyed it a lot. We also got some stuffed grape leaves to split, which were lemony but not overwhelmingly so like Greek grape leaves sometime are. The food took a little while to prepare but was well worth the wait. After dropping hundreds of dollars/meal in Gloucester restaurants during a quick, two day vacation, my wife and I decided we just wanted a couple sandwiches on the way home. Stopped here largely on strength of Yelp reviews. Rarely have rave reviews been more accurate! Amazing, delicious, fast, fresh, healthy food for about what I'd expect to pay at Subway. I'm not an expert on Mediterranean/Middle Eastern food. But I do know one thing for sure: this place is tasty. My dad got the beef kebab bowl, and I got the falafel wrap, and both were delicious. The beef was juicy and flavorful. I loved the falafels; the weren't some frozen junk. They were warm and savory, crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. We also got some pita bread with baba ganoush (as recommended by the lady who was helping us order) and it was amazing. The owners are extremely friendly and helpful. It's an open kitchen and you can basically see how they prepare the food right in front of you, and you can trust that it'll be clean and hygienic. I would definitely go here again for the falafels as well as to try out for the other items on the menu (and the fact that this place is super affordable is a huge plus). Just a note for those visiting, this place is pretty small. It does have some counter space for ~5 people to sit and eat, but don't plan on big groups unless you are doing a take-out. read more

Thanks to other Yelpers who didn't miss on recommending this jewel. Convenient if you're in Gloucester and, more importantly, at the corner you take to get to Gloucester High School from Route 128, we saw the storefront driving to the school field for a game and wanted to try it. Food can be eaten on site but is primarily a "to go" venue... which when you have the waterfront, parks, and nearby beaches of Gloucester and the surrounding area is a bonus. Now to the food. Two words: yummy & fresh! Ordered the chicken shish kebab bowl (rice, meat, toppings) and a meatball (kofte) wrap. The meat is cooked fresh, with the choices of toppings including hummus, red onions, shredded carrots, lettuce, a mix of tomatoes and cucumbers, pickled red cabbage, beets, and tzatziki sauce - you can have none or as many toppings as you want. Wonderfully spiced food was tasty, plentiful, reasonable priced, and (a big plus) traveled well. So tasty. My son got a lamb kabob bowl and I got the meatball kebab bowl. We both got the "brown rice" which is actually bulgur wheat (he did tell us that) and it was excellent. Fantastic service, very understanding and helpful server. Interactive and always willing to make your dining experience better. A small place for takeout but even the waiting experience was great. Not too loud cultural music plays in the background and watching the food being made is a great thing to watch. As a tourist, he was EXTREMELY helpful and definitely made things a lot better for me. Just took another dinner home from Paprika Grill! I've had the falafel salad and the wrap before. Yum! I was determined to try something else. I got spicy chicken Adana, ground spiced chicken formed around a skewer and served over salad with yogurt sauce! Amazingly delicious with lovely warm spices of the region. And then on a whim I added the baba ganoush! Wow, maybe the best I've ever had. Smoked, creamy and not at all watery like it sometimes is when I make it. This place is a huge winner! read more

My family and I are huge lovers of Middle Eastern food and have traveled that area extensively. I have now been here four times and I think this place has the potential to be 5 stars, if the owner makes a few changes. First and foremost, the meat portions tend to be on the small side. In the sandwiches for example, if you chose to get some of the other stuff, I.e., pickled cabbage, carrots, lettuce, onions, tomato/cucumber salad, you are left with a predominantly veggie sandwich, with maybe a few bites of meat hidden in there somewhere. So why not put a veggie wrap on the menu and give those who order meat something to actually chew on? Unlike gyros all over Greece and Turkey, where the meat is the star, at Paprika Grill, the opposite is true. I'm sure some people love this but not many of the people I've spoken with do. Lack of meat is their number one complaint. Second, it would be nice if some of the items had more flavor. The falafel, which is not the traditional crumbly style, has more of a rubbery-like texture and is a little too bland for my tastes. On the other hand, the baba ganouj is probably the best I've ever had. Great seasoning and smokiness; a real winner! The yogurt sauce could use a little oomph as well. It tastes like watery yogurt and dill; unlike the traditional tatziki sauce one associates with Middle Eastern fare. Service can be slow but they are still starting out and everyone who works there is extremely pleasant; they just need to be a little faster. As I said in the beginning of my review, I have been here four times and will keep coming back for the freshness of ingredients but they really need to step it up a bit more to keep the clientele coming back. read more
