Located across from Kauai High School, this hole in the wall bento box place was rather surprising. I got the regular box with chili pepper chicken upgrade to share with my family. We had other food but wanted to try this place. The chicken had good flavor and was more like a Thai sweet chili fried chicken than chili peppa. The Mac spaghetti was also very good because it didn't have tuna in it. The chicken long rice was the special for the day and lacking in flavor and liquid. Also it had a fishy taste? Very off putting. The goteborg and rice wasn't popular with my kids. But my little one liked the 1/3 piece of shoyu hot dog. Wish there was more of that for her. My sister also got the kalbi plate special and smoked meat to take back home. The kalbi she said was tough. For the price and variety I would say it's reasonable unless you are like me and only enjoy a few items from the box. Service was good, the lady working the register was nice. There were 5 people that stopped by in the time we ordered and got our food. Seems like some phone their orders in. We waited maybe 10 minutes and parking was right out front. There is one large picnic table to eat there but thankfully with the 7 of us, we were able to take it back to our hotel. read more

Perfect spot to pick up bentos! I ordered on Yelp since i wanted to pick up early in the morning. It was efficient and they were ready when I pulled up. The service was friendly and I love supporting local. We ordered the regular bento it had a good variety of food, fried chicken, teri beef, hash, hot dog, Goteburg musubi, rice noodles and more. Best box lunch for flight to mainland! We stopped by here after gassing up the rental car, on the way to the airport. We arrived before they opened. The service window so there were some local high school kids already waiting on the one bench/table they have there. I got the chili peppa chicken bento and a chicken katsu plate. At the airport, TSA had to do a closer inspection - my offer to share was declined. TSA did mention that during the recent government shutdown, this spot brought them box lunch a couple times a week. That would have earned a 6th star from me if it that was possible. read more

This is the kind of offbeat food experiences that makes Yelp so fun to use! Paradise grinds is a little walk up in a residential neighborhood on a dead end street. You really get two choices: small or large. There is some room for substitutions, but it's best to order as is and enjoy the full experience! Granted I upgraded to the chili peppa chicken. The woman at the register was friendly and my food was ready in under 10 minutes. It was a quite a spread -- full of little treats and surprises (including a dessert!!). Can get busy for opening or lunch rushes, so maybe CALL AHEAD to order or expect a variable wait as your plate is put together. Credit Card surcharge *sigh*, so consider paying cash. FOOD: i usually get the Deluxe Bento which has a little bit of EVERYthing, similar to the old Po's Kitchen / DJs down on Rice Street. Deluxe has shrimp plus extra chicken or something like that. Worth it. To me the bazillion little portions are always more filling than they look. Sometimes they sub the sides like onions, but it's always good. The $2 upgrade to chili pepper chicken is worth it. Sauce makes the chicken a little soggy by lunchtime, but that's part of the charm. Deluxe Bento makes workday lunch hour feel a little bit like a beach picnic :) read more

Paradise Grinds, if you can find it, is a great spot to eat who has delicious food and friendly service. The prices are excellent for the amount of food you get as well. It's definitely located in a not so public spot so you either have to heard from someone or someone brought you here. It seems like a local spot for sure. Totally agree that Paradise Grinds & Catering got the best "Box Lunch on Kauai" as stated on the box. I really enjoyed my box lunch of okazuya on Kauai. This is my very first box lunch ever and I super loved it! How did I discover Paradise Grinds & Catering?! We were walking our way around Lihue, My other half found a short cut going to the mall which was the back way from the resort. I saw this biz right after Kauai High School on Lala Road. I saw a long line in front, looks like someone's house but it was a business. I took a pic of the menu and that night I searched Yelp for pics and reviews and was excited. I must come back the next day to try. Since we already had lunch plans at the mall. The menu is very limited PG&C, with just 2 types of boxed lunch regular and deluxe or the daily special lunch plates. Although the lunch plate sounds good too, I wanted the box lunch as I loved all the varieties the box lunch comes with. For the daily noodles sides alternates and changes daily. The noodle choices are fried saimin, chicken hekka, and chicken long rice. We had chicken long rice and was hoping for fried saimin. The difference with the regular and deluxe is shrimp tempura for $2. more. I got 3 deluxe box lunch with one upgrade for chili peppa chicken for $2. more! Its like a pre-fixed okazuya box lunch! We took our box lunch and enjoyed it at the beach, OMG so good! The other half ate his all up and enjoyed it! I loved everything on my box lunch, love the rice with Goteborg sausage, the chili peppa chicken, so much food which I couldn't finish and brought it back to Oahu since our flight was later that day! Two weeks ago I decided to come try a box lunch. No one was at the counter so I waited at the counter for a couple of minutes without anyone in line and I noticed a sign that said "Ring for service," so I rang the bell as instructed. The owner came out and took my order but seemed visibly annoyed gave me a cold look and said, "I have all these other orders in front of you, you will have to wait" in a tone that felt more like a scolding than customer service. It's understandable that the owner might be stressed or short-staffed, but taking that out on a customer who simply followed the posted instructions isn't appropriate. If you don't want people to ring a bell, then don't put a sign that says to. It's not fair to treat customers like an inconvenience when they're just doing what the signs say. The food was okay not terrible, but nothing special. Unfortunately, the attitude and service left a more lasting impression than the meal itself. read more

Got a tip to try this place from a friend at work. Honestly I wasn't looking for it, I was just doing errands in town when I spotted what looked like a regular one story, light green house... with a glowing "open" sign. The place itself has a very homey feel, with sports memorabilia of the Lakers and the Seahawks. Some local high school sports stuff as well. It honestly looks like a regular house converted to a small take out kitchen. There's a single picnic bench outside to eat, but I think it's a mostly grab n go take out box lunch type place. Looks to me like they mostly do preset bentos aka box lunches. They had two options posted over the cashier. 1) Bento and 2) Deluxe Bento! Simple. I opted for the deluxe bento with chili pepper chicken. The deluxe Bento with the chicken included: * two shrimp tempura * teriyaki beef * chicken long rice * potato hash patty * Two UFO's (Rice balls with gotoberg sausage underneath) * macaroni salad * tsukemono (pickled veggies) * a hot dog * omelette square * and a piece of chocolate cake! Everything in the bento was hot and fresh! The highlights for me was the crispy hot shrimp tempura and the zesty chili pepper chicken. I'll definitely be recommending to my friends and co workers! Great bento at a reasonable price with quality that's evident I everything they put in the bento. It's a little out of the way as far as lunch options in Lihue, but it's worth the trip. While visiting the Garden Isle we were in Poipu and feeling hungry, so drove to Lihue to check out Paradise Grinds, a little hole in the wall restaurant across from Kauai High School. Once there I myself ordered the deluxe box, oh geez you wannna talk about a lot of food and I'm talking about 11 different choices in that box, which one to start with. Da Best Box Lunch on Kauai is stamped on the box, and they might be right. Certainly won't find a better deal. Lots of good stuff for very little $. I was there a little after opening so I didn't experience any wait time. Come later in the day and I'd expect there will be.
