I'm crying inside because I miss their food so much! One of the best loco moco's I've ever had. And that gravy... its gold! On our last day on the island, we wanted to take some home with us. But how do we get the gravy past TSA?? The rule was no more than 3.3oz per container. Tyren to the rescue! He suggested putting the gravy in 2 small clear plastic containers that were under 3oz each! First stop after landing in Kauai was a quick lunch at Mark's Place. I *love* loco mocos, so as soon as I saw this place near the airport, I knew I had to come. We stopped by for Thursday lunch around 12:30 and it wasn't too packed. You order inside and then find a seat at one of the picnic benches outside. It was hot and humid so most people were sitting in the limited shaded spots. I got the loco moco ($18.49 for regular) and my friend got the teriyaki chicken sandwich ($9.49). Our food was ready after ~10 minutes. The loco moco was super solid. Everything tasted great and I was a big fan of both the patty and the gravy. The only thing is that the patty was a bit burnt on the underside. Also portions were a bit off, as they gave way too much rice (couldn't finish it all) and gravy wasn't enough. I could've easily used twice the amount of gravy. Interestingly, they also give some chow mein as a side in addition to the mac salad. I tried some but personally found it too sweet. My friend liked his teriyaki chicken sandwich. It's on the smaller side but makes for a great snack if you're not super hungry. read more

Now this place is on most every locals list to eat. I have to tell you as a tourist it was the hardest place I've tried to eat at ever! Beware the hours posted are NOT the hours they are open. I had to find out the hard way after three trips during the week they are open when they feel like it and closed to go fishing whenever they feel like it. I guess it's a local thing? Firstly small parking lot but you'll eventually find a spot as people coming and going. The service is pleasant nothing crazy. Took about 15mins to get our food. Couldn't take a photo of the masubis as I demolished them. We went straight here after landing and it was delicious. The mini katsu came with noodles, rice and ketchup. This is one of the "locals" places and truly it is not bad but it's just not what I have come to expect on Kauai. I finally get to try Mark's Place, been on my bookmarks for the longest time. Due to the business hours, they close on the weekends and happy to be on Kauai on a weekday. Lucky I checked the hours and I made adjustments to our eating out agenda. We didn't have a rental car yet, so we took an Uber from hotel, busy little hole in the wall with picnic tables available outside for enjoying your plate lunch. Place order at store and you will be notified via beeper. So many great choices on the menu, local kine grinds! Best to check Instagram for specials of the day, desserts and updates. I wanted the fish special of the day but also wanted to try the beef stew and the chicken. I opted for the 3 item combo. Colorful bento were also available and musubi, perfect for beach or your flight. We waited about 5 minutes for our plate, they were busy with non-stop customers coming in, popular business for sure! The plate is huge, this was more than enough for 2, for my 3 item combo I got chicken cutlet, chicken katsu and beef stew. I got salad and rice as sides. The plate also comes with fried saimin noodles. I got both gravy and katsu sauce on the side. The verdict- broke the mouth, we really enjoyed our plate lunch and the beef stew, Ono! Cooked so perfect, we never had beef stew for the longest time and that for sure hit the spot. The dessert of the day wasn't my favorite, it was an OREO one, the only available ones so we missed out on the dessert, next time as I heard my neighbor who is form Kauai mentioned that they have good desserts too! All in all, we enjoyed our first time visit to Mark's Place and I recommend. Ah yes - my final meal in my Hawaii saga. It was a grand finale indeed - got the Hamburger Steak Loco Moco and man was it wonderfully delicious. A sloppy mish mash of perfectly blended flavors - a perfectly cooked pattie topped with a runny egg that ran perfectly texture-wise with the also ever so flowy gravy atop the dish. A generous and affordable helping - friendly staff that served it that were really patient with me while I decided what to order. Wish it had more seating, but that is such a small and unimportant complaint - had a picnic table out front all to myself and got to reflect on everything I had done to that point, and it just felt like the perfect Hawaiian comfort food and finale. We heard great things about this place from some local friends and all our expectations were met. Since Mark's is really close to the airport, my SO and I stopped for lunch here before getting on a helicopter tour. We were kind of worried about getting airsick on the tour (we didn't), so we opted to share a plate- but since the food was so delicious we both wished we could have gotten our own plates! To sample a bit of everything, we went with a 3-choice combo plate with loco moco, chicken katsu, and teriyaki beef, then got mac salad and chow mein on the side. Every single item was excellent but the chicken katsu stood out the most for me. We also took a banana macadamia nut loaf to go, and it was moist and just the right amount of sweetness. We had our food outside under the watchful gaze of several chickens. I don't have a single bad thing to say about Mark's Place apart from the tight parking and how bummed I am about their limited service hours. 6/28/24 Mark's Place came highly recommended by a friend for their loco moco. It's not a restaurant, more of a cafeteria order what you want, pay and sit outside with picnic tables environment. We ordered (2) regular Loco Moco and (1) Mark's Famous Mix Plate, a Korean chicken Musubi, a large fries and 4 drinks from the fridge. My oldest son said the Loco Moco had good flavor, hubs thought it was ok. Mixed Plate was huge. Chicken Katsu was crispy on the outside and tender on inside. Mac salad was yum, had to go back for 2 more scoops for the not so little one. The beef stew was very tender, tomato base flavor. Arriving at Mark's after a long afternoon in the jungle a couple of waterfalls later. Starving as this little gem was recommended by other travelers.
