I am a very health-forward person when it comes to food, and Parakeet Café always does an amazing job at ensuring every plate is delicious without forgetting about nutritional value and macronutrient balance. Other restaurants might not mind these latter aspects and will use plenty of oil, sugars, processed ingredients, etc., to enhance flavor, but of course, at the cost of nutrition. Not the case at Parakeet! The variety of items in the menu, either of meals, beverages, snacks, and to-go goodies is unmatched, in my opinion. I could eat here every day and remain satisfied knowing the food is organic, of high quality, and prepared with care by the cooks and baristas. The customer service is lovely; the crew is very layed back, socially speaking, but very attentive when it comes to your "customer needs". A few of my girlfriends and I visited Parakeet Cafe after having seen it all over Instagram - we were in town and hungry! Upon arrival our first thought was that the place was just as cute as all the pictures we had seen. The outdoor seating, the pink front door, and the gorgeous wall paper and neon light inside were great modern and interesting features. Our second thought - omg this place is tiny. This is not a Cafe for people looking for a quiet place to read or big groups, this is more of a grab a matcha, take the picture and run kind of place. The staff is super friendly, was so helpful in picking out what we would eat/drink, and there's a lot on the menu to choose from! Just keep in mind I wouldn't exactly call it budget friendly. So I went to Parakeet this past weekend on a double date and I got the grilled vegetable bowl. The reviews seemed to rave about it, but it turned out to be basically just soba noodles, arugula, and a ton of beets that tasted raw. I was disappointed that there were no variety of vegetables and that they seemed to be barely, if at all, grilled; totally not worth the $14 bucks. However, the pink lemonade was super good! I was a bit hungry on the way out, so I snagged a cherry cranberry scone. That was honestly really good too. The best cacao waffle I have ever had in my life. It had coconut yogurt and berries on top . Didn't need the coconut syrup at all so I asked for it on the side but the fruit was sweet enough. Delish . My husband has the shakshooka and it had more of a Spanish flavor than middle eastern ( which is what it's supposed to be) but the egg dish cake in with nice think cut sourdough bread ( ask for extra piece as you will need it) but all in all, great coffee and beverage selections including their wines!!! read more

I have been reluctant to criticize any restaurant during COVID. I so appreciate the people working in restaurants for bringing some normalcy to my days. That said, I ordered a breakfast burrito(BB) with avocado. Most disgusting BB I have ever eaten in my life. It was more like BB soup. Who puts yogurt in a BB? I should have sent it back and got something else but again, didn't want to insult the hard working folks there. Found this place on Instagram and decided to come check it out. The team working there was really welcoming. I tried their turmeric latte and the chocolate chip cookie. The latte was really tasty, I loved the ginger touch. We sat outside with my husband as we had our dog with us and their patio was really pleasant. Ohh my goodness, why isn't this gem in Texas!? I came here because a little birdie told me (lol get it?) and I was so inspired! The wall paper and interior is so cute and the staff makes you feel like regulars and they make you so comfortable! I had such a hard time deciding what I wanted to order and they helped me every step of the way! I ended up getting this amazing salad and matcha lemonade! Recently started coming to the Parakeet cafe to escape UCSD's crowded libraries during finals. Suffice it to say that I have fallen head over heels with this place! Having recently sworn off gluten, usually I am unable to get any pastry at all. Not the case here! I had a Gluten Free Blueberry scone and it was superb! My almond milk matcha latte was the perfect proportion of matcha to milk and enjoyed every last drop. There are even options to add collagen-which I will get next time for sure! This is my new go-to study space because it usually isn't too crowded and I can find a comfortable place to bunker down for a few hours with plenty of outlets to plug in. The baristas are also all very friendly and promptly clear your table of any and all dishes once you've finished. I just wanted to quickly grab a coffee and something small for breakfast to-go. It was unbelievably busy for a Wednesday at 1030am. I ordered a coffee and one of their toasts. The coffee came out pretty quickly, and was good. The toast however, took a whopping 40 minutes..to mount some other uncooked items on top of lightly toasted bread. No one gave me any updates or a simple "sorry we are slammed it will be out soon". If you order to-go, you don't get a number for a table, so you have to stand way outside where you can't hear your name be called, or crammed into a corner where you're in the way of everything. No masks. Perhaps the staff is mandated vaccinated but it's a tiny tiny space inside and the honor system just isn't enough for me as far as customers go. I saw a man (customer) reach his hand into the ice bowl they had on the counter, put some ice cubes into his mouth, and put the rest back into the bowl (where there were to-go drinks being kept cool...I was there around 1030am, check the camera). Unpleasant all around except the food and coffee was fine. There are only a few tables inside, it would have been a little less chaotic if those tables could be put outside somehow. It was like being at a concert in there. Parakeet is a decently successful business, so I think they can do better; whether it's crowd control, social distancing, hiring more kitchen staff, etc. The man making coffee was sweet, the woman taking orders could improve her customer service a little. Usually, this coffee-bakery shop is top notch, but lately I have noticed the indifferent bordering arrogant DANGEROUS attitude of the wait service people. Today they made me a drink 1) incorrectly 2) that BURNT my hand badly!! And WITHOUT even noticing that the coffee was spilled everywhere!... I spilled the EXTREMELY HOT coffee onto their menus on the countertop inorder to avoid spilling the same HOT coffee on a small child standing in line with his mother-the next customer. Those waitresses were more interested in the next customer than seeing to the welfare of the previous customer STILL AT THE COUNTER WITH A SPILLED BOILING HOT COFFEE, than to say, "oh wow, we are so sorry! How can we help?!", which would have been VERY appreciated and would have stopped this Yelp review. Actually those girls had paid more attention to the application of makeup glitter to their eye orbital areas than to customer service. Shame on them!! I guess this is just the European way? Who gives a shit, and NEXT?? Recommendation: Don't order coffee here for your own safety sake... 1) It will be made incorrectly 2) no eye contact, without a smile or thank you 3) ZERO customer service follow through.
