Just went to Paris bakery to purchase a birthday cake. Waited in line and when it was my turn the counter worker skipped my to help the next person. The man she skipped me for said she was here first but she continued to help him. I will never patronize paris bakery again. I am a restaurant manager and we handle weddings frequently and I will not recommend Paris bakery again. i will pay my $40.00 for a birthday cake elsewhere. read more

Have you heard? Cakes and pies are the real deal! Yep, it's been years since my last review of this dough joint but here I am and sister I ain't missed a step. Now these cakes and cookies and the like just get better over time and I'm here to tell you these dough punchers ain't your average crew. These old silly freaks are dusting up the air pretty good at all hours just so I can stuff my cake hole to the brim. Then it's out to the sidewalk to empty my gut - but good! The outside does not look like much. The inside does not look like much either come to think of it. That is unless you are looking into their glass display cases loaded with pastries, cookies and quiches. Oh my! There are so many to choose from while a line of customers impatiently await their turn behind you. I chose a chocolate éclair and a chocolate croissant. Did I mention that I loooove chocolate? The woman waiting on me was very friendly and helpful and explained to me that their éclairs "are made a little differently". They have chocolate inside of them rather than a cream filling. Just what I have been looking for! There is not much seating in this place but I lucked out and got a table. The croissant was extremely buttery and the way it was cooked with chocolate coating the bottom, inside the layers of pastry, was exquisite to say the least. The éclair was good but the chocolate was a little too creamy and there was so much of it that it was to the point of being slightly overwhelming. I was expecting the chocolate in the eclair to be more like the croissant which is the way they had made them at the Chocolate Swan (my absolute favorite) in Las Vegas before it sadly closed its doors.. Wow. Walked by this place after breakfast. The baked goods smell (scent?) literally pulled us in. Against our will, I swear! So good. The tiramisu my husband got was thoroughly enjoyed. I got an almond croissant and a cinnamon croissant for later. Wow, long time since I enjoyed a pastry soooooooo much. We were rendered useless for a while after. We ate the cinnamon croissant in bed a few minutes ago. Wow. Even cold, having been in a box, in a hot car for hours, delicious. They need to open one of these bakeries in Ventura. read more

Holy Almond Croissant goodness! I am a sucker for a French Bakery and recently suffered the terrible disappointment of learning that my favorite San Diego Patisserie was closed. I think the Paris Bakery has healed my broken heart with it's glorious selection of breads and pastries. I would almost pay just to gaze upon the wonder that is their bakery cases! Looks aren't everything though. Thankfully, everything I tasted was as delicious as it was lovely! As you've probably already figured out I ordered the almond croissant. My intention was to save it for "later" and I really did intend for later to be more than 1 minute after I smelled it! The problem was that it was right out of the oven- who can resist? It was truly the best I've ever had. I tried a plain croissant as well and it was perfection. My husband had the ham and cheese croissant and a cinnamon roll and gave them both 2 thumbs up. Have to lower my rating on this restaurant. One of the problems that I have see the last 2 times here is Pigeons coming inside because they keep both front doors open. Not impressed at all. I picked up a bunch of stuff and only the the bread pudding and the apple strudel were pretty good but the chocolate/banana croissant and the blueberry scone were bad, we actually threw it out because it wasn't worth the calories. I also ordered a sandwich for my hubby and it was ok. Okay, what's going on here? Did I come on an off day?? Did I order the wrong thing?!? The variety of desserts and baked goods draw you in, but seriously , I wish they tasted as good as they looked! Was having a sucky day so I dragged my son with me to get some dessert, hoping it would cheer me up. I've enjoyed the almond croissants here in the past, so I decided to bring him here for a nice treat. We decided to share an apple strudel and a chocolate mousse. Both were disappointing. The chocolate mousse had a hard outside crust that was very dry. My son even asked me if the crust was edible since it was so hard. We ended up eating the chocolate mousse center that was just okay...nothing exciting. The apple strudel was dry also and comparable to the frozen apple strudels that you can buy at the grocery store....it had that weird, refrigerator taste to it. Location is great, right by downtown Monterey. There are a few tables inside to dine in. Service isn't too friendly...I noticed them chatting away with regulars but not too much interaction with anyone else. Overall, not a place I would come back to for dessert. I'll probably come back to try the sandwiches and soups but there are plenty of other bakeries in the area that are worth going to instead. read more

I don't know that I'll come back here after today. It was so frantic and hectic behind the counter that it was off-putting. Different people kept asking every 30 seconds, "Are you ready?!" I'm slow, I read the menu, I admit it. Also, if you're allergic to eggs or you don't like them, be warned that they apparently put them on their sandwiches. The woman behind the counter swore she told me, but I didn't hear her say eggs, and my friend didn't either. Her response was what I'm starting to except in Monterey: defensive, snotty and unapologetic. Instead of, "Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry about that! Let me make you another sandwich!" the first person I spoke to said, "Oh, well, I didn't make the sandwich..." and then the woman who took my order said, "I said eggs. I said eggs." When I told her I never heard her say eggs, she just got more defensive and said, "I SAID eggs." Fine. If you want tasty treats, I'm sure they are good in this shop. However, after several tries with different breads, I don't recommend. The crust is similar to day old and the dough is, as far as I can tell, just a plain ol' white bread. It reminds me of something my grandfather would have eaten with his iceberg lettuce and thousand island dressing salad. read more

This is a delightful bakery/cafe. I highly recommend the princess cake. The delicate sponge, raspberry jam, whipped cream all wrapped in marzipan is a fancy dessert that most any connoisseur of traditional European pastries would enjoy. The quiche comes highly recommended. The crust is flaky, buttery, yet hardy all at the same time. Whereas the filling is not short of spinach, egg, cheese, and good overall flavor. In an epic tribute to Bastille Day last Wednesday, I decided after picking up an almond croissant at Parker-Lusseau, I couldn't ignore Paris Bakery down the street. (OK, maybe a little more than "down the street".) In a true test of endurance, I ordered an almond croissant, almond meringue (did I mention I like almond?) and the cinnamon record cookie. I paced myself and decided to wait to consume my pastries at home. Well results were mixed--the croissant and the cinnamon record cookie made it home, but the almond meringue got eaten along the way. Oops. The almond meringue was good, but not the best I've had on the Monterey Peninsula--Patisserie Bechler in PG has better--but the almond croissant was very good. The croissant was nice and buttery with rich almond paste inside. It was definitely dessert--it was very sweet, but in a good way. I would have appreciated more almond slices on top, like at Parker-Lusseau. But the stand-out of this trip was the cinnamon record cookie. I've had many pastries from the Paris Bakery, but never this humble cookie. Oh man, it was delicious! It was like a palmier, but thinner and with TONS of cinnamon. I love cinnamon, and this thin, buttery cinnamon cookie might just be my new favorite cookie! I wish I'd bought a whole dozen of these! I appreciate how cheap Paris Bakery is compared to some of the other patisserie's around the Monterey Peninsula. Two croissants, two meringue cookies and a cinnamon cookie cost me $6.75, whereas a single croissant at Parker-Lusseau cost me $4. It's a great pastry shop to try when you're on a budget--you can get some great pastries for very little dough. (Yes, pun intended.) (Did anyone catch I picked up almond croissants at Parker-Lusseau AND Paris Bakery . . . on the same day. Excessive? Sure. But it was for the purposes of a scientific taste test--at least that's what I told myself. Who won? Honestly? I don't think there's anything in here that would taste bad. I had Paris Bakery for breakfast both mornings I was in Monterey this summer. I tried a variety of pastries and really, everything was excellent! Favorite: Ham and cheese croissant. So buttery. So delicious. Tied with: Chocolate croissant. Ugh. GIVE ME MORE. Almost favorite: Strawberry croissant. Two of my favorite things, can't go wrong! Not my favorite, but still darn good: Cream cheese croissant. The cream cheese is soaked up into the croissant during baking, so don't expect a ton of cream cheese. Still decadent. I happened to be driving by on my way out of Monterey and decided to stop for a quick lunch. The quiche was very good and I definitely recommend it. The Chicken Focaccia sandwich was also very good. I tried the Apple Streusel and was a bit disappointed. It wasn't very sweet and the crust was rather tough. I also got a brownie to go. The brownie was somewhat hard - didn't seem to be very fresh. It had a very rich cocoa taste. It wasn't bad, just not my favorite. If I lived in the area I would stop in often to try their many desserts. They have something for everyone. read more

Living in the Bay Area we are spoiled with great bakery. We came here to grab a quick bite to eat before heading to My Museum across the street. We had the clam chowder soup in bread bowl supposedly all homemade was not good. There was no balance in flavor and the onion was a way to over powering. We also had herb chicken sandwitch on a french baguette. The chicken had some cartilage made me wonder the quality of food serve here. The herb use was the dry stuff, the baguette was less to be desire. Come on, how can you call yourself a Paris bakery? Come for the bread and pastries -- don't stay for the lunch and dinner offerings. Their sandwiches are an afterthought and really not that great. We were on our way to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and picked up some sandwiches for a very quick sit down lunch. I was hesitant from the beginning but in the vicinity there was nothing else in our price range, so I relented. (Mine) Ham & Brie Panini - OK, but not melty enough. When you make a panini with cheese, it gets a billion times better when you actually melt the cheese inside instead of just making grill marks on the bread and calling it ready. Additionally they use brioche bread for this panini, which is very unusual. (Not Mine) Chicken Pesto Panini with Swiss - Better, but it is hard to go wrong with pesto. The bread had the same issue of being a little too rich for the filling inside. Moreover it was very brittle and it was difficult to eat it as a sandwich. I noticed that the pesto had also surreptitiously ended up in my ham and brie panini, which actually made it tastier. New taste concept? Onion soup - Got the job done, I guess. The cheese all came out in one piece, which in theory shouldn't happen, but I guess I am just a perfectionist. However, their pastries and breads look great. This appears to be their core competency. If you are in the area, especially as a tourist, you've got to add this spot on your to-do list. They have the most delicious pastries, you can even get a mixed box for $15. These bite-size pastries are amazing. Our favorite that I share with my daughters are the mini-princess cakes, they have great sandwiches as well. I would suggest getting a sample box to take with you as parking and seating in the cafe is limited. we came here for a little le petit dejeuner. like i always say you can go to 10 "french bakeries" in america and 7 out 10 won't even be worth getting, 2 out of 10 will be close but not close enough and 1 out of 10 will have it exact that you won't have to fly across the atlantic to have one. you can guess where PBC falls in. when we walked in it was nice to see all the breads and pastries but there was one thing missing, the smell of a boulangerie. there's two places i know of in california that has it, bread and cie in hillcrest and la maison du pain in los angeles. walk in and they have a very distinct smell and just like PBC they also makes tarts and cakes so it wasn't because of that. after staring at their baguettes i should known better but i thought maybe the croissant would be different, and it wasn't. the only thing they got right was the inside. the top wasn't flaky or crusty more like day old or supermarket like croissants. where they're soft and limp, there was no structure to it. always ask yourself this when having croissants, when pressing down with your fingers on the top do you feel and hear it break and crumble into little tiny golden brown pieces. if it doesn't, its not authentic. when you break off the ends of the crescent do you hear the same breaking sounds and does it feel flaky, crusty and buttery to the touch. also, a bite should consist of a flaky crunch followed with some light buttery softness. if it doesn't, its not authentic. there are places that can get it right but you have to find them. we tried more than a few in LA and SD and the closest by far without flying is La Maison Du Pain in los angeles. their butter croissants, to the their pain au chocolat, to their jambon et fromage is the closest probably in all of california. biting into their croissants is like a time machine. bread and cie baguettes in SD is the same. unfortunately i can't say the same for Paris Bakery Cafe. *****update to owners comments***** it may have been our particular visit which can happen but one would think that at 730am the croissant wouldn't have been so soft. if your croissants softens because of the real butter and time, then you can learn a lesson from cafe de l'opera in downtown sd where they bake more when they know they need more. they probably do it to prevent their croissants from softening. i've been to france many times for business and i've only experienced croissant and baguettes in boulangerie and patisserie. a colleague even brought me to lionel poilaine original bakery in paris and their croissants were flaky with a slight crunch on the first layer with a soft airy buttery inside. read more

OMG! Once again, O.M.G! Hands down the best veggie sandwich I've ever had and I'm not a vegetarian. The veggie delight I believe its called. The vegetables were fresh and crisp and the bread it came on was amazing. Freshly baked, nice and soft. I felt like a kid in a candy store at this place. There were soooo many things to choose from. I would definitely recommend this place for their sandwiches or for there bread alone.Simply put, THEIR BREAD IS AMAZING! Since it was my first time here, the chef in me had to try a variety of different things with my p.i.c (partner in crime- my husband). Besides the amazing veggie sandwich, we had the meatloaf sandwich and a side of potato salad. The meatloaf itself was average and the potato salad needed pepper, but once added was great. What made the sandwich again was the bread. But oh that veggie sandwich! I'm going to crave one every time I come back to visit! On to the desserts(which we took to go). I got the Alizee( which was raspberry, hazelnut, white cake and cream), the Mini Napoleons, a slice of the opera cake, chocolate peanut butter cookies, and raspberry and apricot thumbprint cookies. Oh and a loaf a bread, of course. The Napoleon was great! The opera cake and the thumbprints were okay. I didn't like the chocolate peanut butter cookie or the Alizee. The cookie was soft but it had a burnt taste to it. The Alizee had potential to be great but It had the refrigerator taste to it. Personal preference, I feel they should put a little more hazelnut in it. Staff was friendly and the price is right for the quality ingredients. Next time I will try other desserts and maybe add on that extra star but I will definitely be back for that veggie sandwich! LOL. read more

How do you define a 5-star rating, for me it varies. It's normally based on the product, service, atmosphere or sometimes its just how you feel when you leave a place. I always feel good when I leave Paris, I've been going to PB for 20+yrs and I've had the honor of going to coffee with my 93-year old Grandfather there for the last 3-yrs, which we've recently lost... ciao Nano, no bigatha, b'fecia. In Italy and France your either a Bread baker or a pastry chef. To me the breads at PB are superior to their pastries. I know of a place that does better croissants but I don't get the same feeling from the owner & staff. My top picks are, a turkey baguette or the ham & cheese croissant (heated) must be eaten there, followed by an espresso! Espresso: they have the best coffee BEANS in town (illy), however I do have to tell them to make it short & strong (aka strato) or else I'll end with watery espresso Conclusion, you can't go wrong, actually your winning with Paris Bakery and keep in mind you can order raw pizza dough if your putting together pizza extravaganza. read more

Wife and I stopped by here twice during our vacation in Monterey last Aug 2013. We came back because the sandwiches were pretty good and made fresh daily. The almond croissant was outstanding. We like the relaxed atmosphere. It's also a good place to talk with friends and loved ones. We noticed some old-timers who seemed to be regulars. For the days that we went there on our vacation, they hung out at the same area. Seems they agree with the place. The only gripe I have concerns this one older lady who seemed quite the fascists. She neither said thank you nor offered a greeting. She had this sour-pussed face that projected a "WTF" do you want look. She was out of place with the other staff. But I didn't let her ogre-like attitude ruin my time in Monterey. Update: Jun 2014, Came back to this place after my tour ended in Afghanistan. All I could think about while away was going back to the Naval Post Graduate school and visiting this little patisserie. I still keep it at 4 stars. This place was busy this morning. I liked all the assortment of French Bakery goods. Seating is limited but were lucky to get a table fast. We wish we had discovered this place before our last day of our trip! We stopped here before heading to the aquarium and got a ham and cheese croissant (warmed up) and a eclair. The croissant were delicious! It melted in our mouths and regretted only ordering one. The eclair was not what we were expecting. We are used to having traditionally vanilla custard filling instead it was filled with chocolate custard. Nonetheless still a very good eclair. Obviously we only tried two items on the menu but from those two items we definitely coming back next time we are in town. read more

What I mostly want to discuss is that I had a GREAT Americano here. What was so great? It wasn't watery, it had a strong, full bodied flavor and it even had crema on top. If I lived locally, I'd get all my coffee here. We also enjoyed the pain au chocolat, which was buttery, flaky and yet still substantial and filling. The egg and spinach breakfast sandwich was tasty but not as exceptional as the coffee. The ambience is low frills and the staff are friendly and accommodating. read more

The line went out the door n around the building. Once I tasted the cakes/ pastries, I understood why the line was long. Got house coffee, banana n chocolate croissant, upside down pineapple cake and croque monsieur (turkey). The sandwich was very delicious..topped with carrot n asparagus. Pineapple cake was moist n delicious. Banana n chocolate croissant was my favorite. Very fresh, flaky, buttery n delish ....Must try! Lots to choose from....you will need atleast 10 mins to decided what you want. Bakery has plenty place to sit n enjoy the food but when it gets busy then its hard to find a seat. This place is SO good. We were at the Children's Museum across the street and really needed to get a bite to eat afterwards. We walked in and they have two cases FULL of deserts. I was almost a little overwhelmed lol I ordered the turkey and Swiss panini, it comes with tomato and it was SO good. I even got my picky 3 year old to eat some of it. My husband wanted the chicken sandwich they had on special but they were all out. So he ordered the roast beef sandwich. He said it was alright (due to lack of knowledge when asking what came on this sandwich). We also ordered the their bread pudding (they make it with the left over croissants they have, super delicious), a lemon poppy seed muffin, a pumpkin muffin and a chocolate triangle. All of which were delicious, nice and moist. My only two complaints would be one the organization. We ordered our pastries then went to another side to order our sandwiches. I felt like it was a lot of back and forth and was unsure of what line to stand in. The other complaint was Kimberly. She seemed to have a slight attitude while we were there and any question we needed answered, she didn't know the answers and had to ask (not sure if she was new or not). Also someone yelled out that something with turkey was ready (a to go order, which is what we did as well) so I went to grab it thinking it was mine and Kimberly proceeded to grab it and said "No. Did you order something?" And she was the one who took our order. I felt like there was a more proper way she could of handled it. I'd definitely be back though next time we're in the area! read more
