CLOSED SUNDAYS!!!!! I was *devastated* to see this. Arrived on Friday and planned to get a GF cinnamon roll from here before leaving Sunday, not realizing it is only open Tuesday thru Saturday wahhhhhhhhh. But I was able to get a Nece's chocolate chip muffin at Captain & Stoker in town, and it was delish. Great texture, super big, very enjoyable. I hope I can come back for a gf cinnamon roll someday as I feel like those are hard to come by. read more

I love this place so much I could cry! Having gluten and dairy free dietary restrictions and a love for pastries does not always go hand in hand, but I genuinely could not tell the difference at Nece's GF. (My boyfriend, who is not gluten free, also agrees.) The staff was confidently able to recommend me options that were dairy free, on top of everything already being gluten free. It was such a relaxing and fun experience being able to choose from a variety of muffins, brownies, cookies, and cakes without the worry of feeling sick afterwards. My personal favorites were the maple scone and the brownie with sea salt. These were hands down the best gluten and dairy free pastries I've ever had, and I will most definitely be back. What a great place to visit regardless of if you have severe gluten allergies or are celiac. My celiac husband and I were staying in Carmel for the weekend and took the opportunity to order a bunch of sandwiches from Nece's to stock up since we were there just for the weekend and they are closed sun-mon. These were some of the best gluten-free sandwiches we've ever had. We tried literally every sandwich on their menu and they were all fantastic. Huge serving sizes (one sandwich made two meals for me) an incredible flavor and quality. It is a crime that there's not a Nece's where we live! Whether you're gluten-free or not, definitely give this place a try. You'll be glad you did! read more

If you're looking for the scone of your dreams, it lives here. Nece's is amazing! I visit Monterey maybe once a year, and I make it a point to get my gluten free baking fix at least once while I'm in town. The cheddar jalapeño scone is to die for - tender and bouncy and just the right amount of cheese and peppers. How do they even do this?? I guess lots of people are in the know, though, because they mostly sell out before 10am. So get there early! The muffins are perfectly textured too- none of the gritty or mushy feel you get with so many gluten free baked goods - just tender crumb in lots of flavors. I tried the sugar cookie and the salt pretzel this time around too. The cookie had a delicious buttery flavor and was soft but not overly crumbly- the closest I've seen to what I remember of a traditional sugar cookie. The salt pretzel was really hard until I microwaved it for 30 seconds, then it softened up really nicely. Listen, if you're gluten free, just go there. You will not be sorry. read more

I didn't think gluten-free baked goods can be this good. Usually the thought of a gluten-free pastry is so offputting that I don't even try it. We just so happen to be staying at a hotel one street over from this place on our trip to Big Sur so I walked in. I got a sconewich two days in a row, and to be honest it was one of the most delicious things I've ate. I also brought a blackberry scone home, which was equally delicious. Everything else looked so fluffy and amazing, I honestly don't know how they do it. I have baked gluten-free before and everything comes out like a brick. I loved this place. read more

Where to start? Nece's GF is incredible!! We have tried everything from their sandwiches, cake slices, cheesecake slices, cookies, brownies, pretzels, to their ham and cheese wheels. This is a mandatory stop for us whenever we're in Monterey. The front of house staff are lovely to interact with, so knowledgeable, and so caring for all of your baked goods. My husband has a chocolate allergy and Nece's staff was so careful to separate out all of the non-chocolate items from the chocolate items. The extra step to show this level of care did not go unnoticed and FOH staff did this without us needing to ask. As someone who was recently told they can't have gluten, this place is like finding the light at the end of a dark tunnel. I am so grateful to this little bakery for their delicious gf baked goods and wonderful humans to interact with. read more

Had a gluten free muffin from here. It was one of the better gluten free items I've tried but I think they use alternative sugars in their items because I had allergic reaction to something in the muffin. Don't let that stop you though! Like I said texture wise, not bad for gluten free sadness. I didn't visit the location directly but had their product from a local coffee roaster. In town for work and as a celiac, I am always on the search for gluten free food. A cute little cafe with AMAZING baked goods and very nice staff! I had a soft pretzel with cheese sauce for the first time in years!!! Literally my favorite spot. I've been gluten free for 14 years, so when Nece's popped up I was floored. Both sweet and savory, and a small coffee menu. Cookies are delicious, bread loaves freeze wonderfully, and the sandwiches?? To die for. I try to swing by for a "sconewich" whenever I'm out of the house before 11am (they run out quickly!!). The cakes are veryyyyyyyyy sweet, which isn't for me but that's personal preference. Staff is always super kind, and even given the Christian atmosphere, I've never been proselytized to, which is nice (esp as a visibly queer individual). We visited Monterey this weekend, and discovered Nece's GF bakery (thanks, Yelp!) just a few minutes from our motel. I think Nece's has nailed the art of gluten-free baking. If you've never had to search for gluten-free options, you can't fully appreciate that statement; so much is out there that just can't match the taste or texture of quality pastries and breads. Yesterday my husband and I found Nece's because we are both gluten sensitive. My husband is also dairy sensitive. We bought their gluten free dairy free brownie and it was out of this world! The most amazing tasting brownie we have had in a long time!! We also bought and everything bagel (which was delicious,) a chocolate chip cookie and a peanut butter cookie. This was good but a bit underwhelming as I felt there wasn't enough cheese nor garlic. Mostly bread. We got a small size Half Heirloom Half Heritage deep dish pizza. I love they you can do half flavors here! This deep dish was soooo saucy and cheesy with a light yet crispy crust that was easy to bite through. Each bite had a crazy cheese pull. My favorite was the Heirloom because I enjoyed the veggies in the pizza, but my boyfriend liked the heritage more (tons of meat). Keep in mind that if you don't like tomatoes, this pizza is probably not for you because the tomato sauce is much thicker than a thin crust pizza. We got here at around 7PM on a Saturday. Beware that the deep dish takes a minimum of about 30 minutes to come out. Ours took 40 minutes. I wish the server told us this to warn us, as I overheard this from nearby customers who were complaining about the wait. The place is quite casual with both indoor and outdoor seating. Both drinks were watery, bitter, and tasted more like regular drip coffee than something you'd expect from a café with such high ratings. The tiramisu was also much smaller than expected and much sweeter than a traditional tiramisu. There was also a small outdoor patio, which could be really charming, but it also looked tired. The wooden tables were weathered, dusty, and in need of some care I know this café is known as an old French café, and I really wanted to love it. What we received was a dry cake with hardly any flavor. My Mother thought it was just a yellow cake, she couldn't even taste the lemon. And she is an experienced baker. She made our lemon and raspberry wedding cake, that my husband was trying to recreate. The raspberry "preserves" were gelatinous, like pie filling from a can. Preserves should be a jam like consistency, only with larger fruit pieces. But sadly, this was goopy and artificial tasting. And the buttercream was greasy, not creamy, like it was made from Crisco shortening (not butter), sugar and water. It didn't even have any flavor (maybe they forgot to put vanilla extract in it?) Even the construction of the cake was poor. They clearly didn't put enough batter in the pans. Normally you shave the rounded top off to make it flat. This bakery just added tons of icing in an attempt to make up for the rounded edges. Which also meant there were barely any raspberry "preserves" in between the layers. And last but not least. When my husband special ordered the cake (in person) he asked for white sprinkles. When he arrived to pick up the cake, it wasn't ready. And they told him they didn't have white sprinkles. And offered to cover the entire cake in tiny rock hard pearls, that are typically only used sparingly for decorative purposes. Because they are so hard, many decorators recommend removing them before eating! My Dad bit into it and said it was like trying to eat buck shot. My Father has never met a cake or sweet he didn't like, until now. He didn't want another piece during his entire visit. My mother and I didn't even finish our first piece. To charge $70 for this 8" cake was just criminal. I would have returned it if I could.
