Ah yes, I remember when this space was a friendly neighborhood cafe, the Celtic Coffee Company. Then it changed its name to Urbean (way too coy), and I lost track since I don't walk on this block of McAllister very often. However, I was on my way to Philz when I noticed this place had traded an Irish brogue for a French accent. Actually I don't think the owner is French, but the space now has a more Gallic vibe. I decided to give it a try. It appeared the owner manages the counter with an assistant. They were quite industrious and light on small talk. I was seduced by the dessert selection in the display case, so I ordered the $4.99 Medium House Coffee and added a $7.99 slice of the Mango Mousse Cake (Photo 10). The coffee was good, not quite Philz level but fine. I liked the fresh flavor and melty texture of the mango mousse though the cake underneath was a tad refrigerated. Tables were well spaced avoiding the crowding that happens at popular spots like Philz or SPRO. I came back today and tried the $4.99 Medium Iced Coffee and a slice of the $4.99 Coconut Tart (Photo 9). Once again, the coffee satisfied, this time as a cold brew. The tart was a bit too refrigerated, but that didn't stop me from finishing it. It's nice to find an option that offers me coffee and a sweet treat. All things In moderation, right? Wonderful cafe in the Civic center area of SF. Great menu selections - I had the veggie sandwich and it was perfect. My daughter had the ham and cheese and a grasshopper cheesecake which she loved. I was walking back from Ariscault when I noticed this new cafe. It is clean and airy inside. They also have a lot of pastries. I ordered an iced mocha and chicken panini sandwich. The sandwich is good. They used real chicken breast, not processed slices. Service isn't exactly cheery but you are thanked for your business and service is prompt. Prices are reasonable. I got the egg and cheese bagel and a caramel macchiato. Both very good. The staff service was alright, not enthusiastic ppl but also not unkind. I do prefer going to places with a more enthusiastic greeting though. Very ample space, has a good amount of seating. It's quiet and I was able to get work done. They also have a bathroom but the toilet didn't seem to be working well, I thought the water was going to run over. But overall, a clean space and good place to go if you're in the area. read more

I had an unfortunate experience here. I accidentally spilled my coffee while returning the cup and plate and immediately informed the owner and apologized multiple times. As the only customer at the time, the reaction was surprising. Instead of handling the situation calmly, the owner became visibly angry and began lecturing me. He repeatedly said that this was why he had told me to order a small espresso instead of an Americano, mimicking my order choice and criticizing that I hadn't finished the coffee. I had clearly explained when ordering that espresso was too strong for me and that I preferred an Americano. After the spill, he also complained that the coffee was "wasted," even though it had already been paid for and the spill was accidental. He continued muttering angrily in French while cleaning. The interaction felt uncomfortable and unprofessional, especially given that it was an honest accident and I was trying to be considerate. I chose to leave due to the hostile tone. Accidents happen, but how staff respond to them matters. Unfortunately, this was not a welcoming or respectful experience. read more

My husband and I stopped by for a light snack and coffee one afternoon after a visit to the Legion of Honor. We shared a trio of mini beignets and a spinach pastry--both were delicious. I ordered a macchiato (the classic version--no caramel or sweeteners!), which was one of the best I've had in a while. We were the only customers in the cafe at the time. I got the caramel macchiato and the bacon egg and cheese bagel - 10/10 for both! Bagel had a nice crunch with a soft inside, egg was fluffy, bacon was perfectly cooked. And the coffee was perfectly sweet with the right amount of ice. Would absolutely recommend both items. We also used their bag checking service, and the man who helped us was very kind and helpful. I chilled at the delightful Paris Cafe around the corner from my Free Mom Hugs booth on both days of Pride. The pretty, spacious place is an absolute oasis. Yummy food beautifully displayed, lots of tables with lots of space between them, plenty of plugs to charge your phone and a clean bathroom. And the gents who run it are so sweet and charming. Great addition to the neighborhood. A clean and well lit casual space with plenty of seating, and serving a variety of pastries, sandwiches, and drinks. The owners are wonderfully warm and welcoming. Only tried a couple of the pastries. The spinach and feta was very tasty, as were the chocolate croissant and the almond. The dough was a little dense and flat though, especially on the croissants. Price wise, I would say they are a little high side, but I'm happy to pay a little extra to have such a nice experience and enjoy the space. read more

Underwhelming. Not sure if I caught them on a bad day/time. First of all, walked in a little after lunch and the energy I got from the employees was as if I caught them during a break. No genuine smiles, greeting, energy. Instead they whispered something at each other. Secondly, the pastries I ordered did not feel fresh. They tasted okay, but there is so much competition around the area and it was not satisfying. It just felt uninviting. This place is a gem tucked away in the colorful streets of the Tenderloin/Civic Center. Delight in the beautifully displayed cases of pastries, from your standard croissant varieties to Napoleons and mango éclairs. They also have a full menu of espresso and tea drinks. The sandwich menu is limited to a few paninis and croque monsieurs, including a chicken monsieur, and the sandwiches are all delicious. Wonderful new addition to the civic center area that is open late (until 7 pm)! I got a house coffee and a chocolate hazelnut cookie and they were delicious. Prices are also very reasonable here. The shop has authentic French cuisine and is a great place to check out if you're in the area. The owner is incredibly friendly and accommodating! The environment is bright and clean (main area and the bathrooms), though I would recommend a ceiling fan or some ac on the hotter days. Wonderful local business with authentic French cuisine!
