After I lost one, Dennis, (who did not fit the originals) took a look to see how I could get a better fit.

Dr. Beene was a great find. I had requested a hearing test and a Nexus letter for my VA disability,…read moreand she performed hearing tests and provided the letter I needed to proceed with my claim. Her demeanor was friendly and attentive. She performed the required testing and spent time discussing my hearing loss, which included my past military experiences with loud noises. The letter she wrote covered all the bases for what the VA would need. I also learned that I could achieve better performance from my hearing aids if I made a small modification to the apparatus' dome. I couldn't be more appreciative of Dr. Beene's professionalism and her personality.

An Audiologist Who Truly Listens and Understands…read more I've been struggling with hearing issues for years, and each time I brought it up, I was told my hearing was "fine" based on standard tone tests. The VA told me this. Two other audiologists told me this. But in my day to day life, I knew something wasn't right. When I met Dr. Beene, it was a completely different experience. I didn't have to explain the VA claims process or educate her about what veterans deal with, she already knew. That alone made a huge difference. More importantly, she didn't just run a standard tone test and send me on my way. The testing itself was quite long and tiring but that's what getting to the bottom of an issue looks like. She understood that there are other types of hearing loss, like processing issues that don't show up on basic audiograms. She actually listened to what I was experiencing and used specialized testing to assess the kind of difficulties I've been living with for years. And she validated that they're real. She even offered to support my VA claim without me asking and genuinely wanted to help me get the support and tools I need, including hearing aids. If you're a veteran, or anyone, who's been told your hearing is fine even though you're struggling to follow conversations, especially in noisy places, please go see her. Or for your other hearing related problems. This is what real care looks like.

I've been going to Center for Better Hearing, now Kenwood Hearing Centers, for over 10 years. Until…read morejust now; my experience was really good. That changed. On recommendation I ordered acrylic extensions to house my hearing aids. (extensions allow deeper placement of the hearing aid into the auditory canal.) The soft, plastic extensions deteriorated, peeling, then cracked in half in just a few days. The salesperson, Joanne Brenner, ordered a 2nd set of extensions, also made of soft plastic. The 2nd set failed just like the first. This time I told Joanne to order hard acrylic instead of soft plastic. During these weeks; I went without hearing aids. When I asked the receptionist at Kenwood Hearing; she told me Joanne had ordered them, that "it just takes time to make them". After 2 weeks, not hearing from Joanne, despite sending several emails and leaving messages; I chose to see an accredited audiologist at Stanford Audiology who contacted the manufacturer, Oticon. Oticon told him there weren't any hearing aid extensions on order for me. He immediately ordered hard acrylic ones, and said he only used hard acrylic for his patients because "the soft acrylic is known to deteriorate." I suggest, if you go to Kenwood Hearing in El Cerrito Plaza, that you avoid Joanne Brenner and choose someone who won't demonstrate indifference to your hearing needs, nor leave you without usable hearing aids indefinitely.
